Gutted that I seem to have missed the Malefices tapes, as well as the Cosmic Church/CoO split.

My 2013 AOTY (in case anyone is curious): Wędrujący Wiatr - Tam, Gdzie Miesiąc Opłakuje Świt Honorable mentions: Fanisk, Paysage d'Hiver, Battle Dagorath, Galaktik Cancer Squad, Vattnet Viskar, the most recent When Woods Make Graves release, and a few others. I'll edit this post with some demos/EPs to recommend to whoever asked when I'm done with PYX.

Surprisingly, my top 20 AOTY for 2013 only features 3 black metal bands. Namely Peste Noire, Cult Of Fire, and The Ruins Of Beverast, and at least two of those are pushing outwards to the periphery of the genre.

Yeah Woods of Desolation and Waldgefluster sure is a fine way to kick off 2014 for black metal. On a first listen I don't like the new WoD as much as Torn Beyond Reason, but I've only listened to it once, so I shouldn't judge too hastily. I think the only BM albums in my top 20 from last year were Fyrnask and Rotting Christ. I enjoyed plenty of BM albums though, still need to hear Peste Noire actually.

Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, In Solitude, Svarttjern and Inquisition. How's that for a line up? I'll be going for Inquisition and hopefully I won't have to endure CoF in order to see Behemoth. Anyway, have a band a polish co-worker of mine introduced me to, Arkona. Not to be confused with the two pagan Russian bands of the same name. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKPmBF9wYP0

Is there a good place to sell older BM vinyl online (besides ebay, I mean)? I've got a buddy that ended up with a mutual friend's record collection and the dude had a ton of Deathlike Silence 1st pressings. Naturally I want them for myself, but no way am I dropping that kind of $$.

Discogs is reasonably active, and stuff will sell there. Other than that, trade forums on the bigger label's websites. But really, Discogs is the best bet.

For rare old stuff like DSP first presses, the NWN forum is probably the best place to find a lot of potential buyers.

Vanitas and Constellation of the Black Widow are probably the best metal albums I've ever heard by comparison. Nails posted:My favorite has always been The Codex Necro. I've never really heard anything quite like it since. It's possibly the heaviest record ever made. Dragging all this forward from June, because I finally got around to obtaining a few of AN's albums off the google play music store (thanks Morbid Florist also for the recommendations when I asked about reasonable online purchase options around then too). Codex Necro is just loving great. 'When Humanity is a Cancer' is absolutely unrelenting, and probably going to be my 'new favorite song' for a while now. I even like the stuff some people are stating are their 'weakest' offerings. I still like Passion for that matter. I really hope these guys tour the U.S. some day.

For me they're one of those bands where none of their stuff is bad, I just prefer The Codex Necro and In the Constellation of the Black Widow to their other stuff. Eschaton has grown on me a lot as well. When Humanity is Cancer is one of my favourite songs by them too, I'd love it if they played it live.

When the Lion Devours both Dragon and Child is probably my favorite Anaal Nathrakh song, which always keeps Eschaton in the running for best AN album for me. That said, In the Constellation of the Black Widow is probably the strongest overall. Passion and Vanitas bum me out because, while pretty good albums, they just don't live up to In the Constellation and I'm afraid they'll never release something that good again. deadking fucked around with this message at 04:13 on Jan 25, 2014 |

So they played at Scion Rockfest in 2011 when it was out here in Pomona, California. I never imagined they could have pulled off any of their material live, but it was spot on and turned out to be one of the best sets I've ever seen. They were touring with some of the guys from Fukpig and Mistress to fill out the ranks ad they all loving slayed. Dave was actually really funny on stage in between songs and really seemed to feed off of the energy of the audience so it was a just a drat good experience. So yes, go see them if you ever have the chance.

Any thoughts on Murmur's new self-titled? I know it's in that weird crossover grey area of "Black metal AND _____" that's been all the rage lately, but I'm not quite sure what to think about it yet. They're doing a BM/70s Prog Rock type of thing and I'm not sure if it works for me. Not in the Enslaved way either where they've been decidedly BM-influenced Progressive Metal for years now, but in an actual Nachtmystium-meets-King Crimson sort of thing, blending equal elements of each. It's really kind of bizarre and I think I need a couple more listens to figure it out.

New Kriegsmaschine is drat solid. If you like your black metal slow and heavy, this is well worth a listen. But really it is well worth a listen cause, hey, new Kriegsmaschine album. I remember seeing the announcement and sample, but forgetting about the actual release. I saw Behemoth/Cradle of Filth/Inquisition/In Solitude earlier this week. In Solitude looked and sounded like they couldn't be bothered, and left after 4 songs. I reckon their singer was on something. Inquisition crushed despite playing in a big venue that is notorious for bad sound. Cradle of Filth... laughable. I can't believe I ever used to be scared of this band. Even though they played mostly old stuff, I was sick of them after about 20 minutes. Not really sure how they've had any enduring popularity, but plenty of other people seemed into it. Behemoth were brilliant even though the venue banned their pyro show, which sucked. Nergal was on top form and the new stuff sounds great live.

nomapple posted:Thanks for the heads up. I remember seeing the announcement and sample, but forgetting about the actual release. It is pretty different from their previous material as you can tell by the sample. Album stays that slow to mid-tempo pace throughout. Seems to be a bit polarizing at the moment, with people either loving it, or disliking it specifically because it isn't fast, and doesn't contain a single blastbeat at all. On the other hand, I can't think of much else like this, so I feel like they finally found a good niche for the Kriegsmaschine sound, to really differentiate it from Mgla.
