If you kill one of them, a timer starts. The rest will start ritually killing themselves to summon a boss. Each one you kill weakens the boss but also weakens her sweet-rear end crown that you get for killing her, plus there's an achievement for killing her at max strength.

Man, the Tannen's Tower fight is loving rough. That Drolem is a monster, and Tannen himself is just an endless goddamned barrage of damage. I lost a life to stupidity after I killed the Drolem, but it was REALLY touch and go the entire fight, and I'm surprised I didn't lose two or three lives - it is not a Cursed friendly fight, as killing either the Drolem or Tannen involves sucking down an endless machine gun of damage, and you don't have the room to actually run away and rest up properly. I wound up kiting them in circles around the arena, diving in and hitting the Drolem once or twice, then rampage + move infusioning to go kite some more.

Fights in small arenas suck horribly for Cursed :(

"I want to see what she's in love with."

On the subject of zone order that someone posted at the end of the last thread, I personally don't like to do trollmire to 3 first on a lot of characters. Bears and trolls are rather tanky, while most of the crap in norgos lair isn't. If I'm a race that starts in troll I'll do the first level, otherwise its off to norgos. The only time I won't clear norgos is if I were to have some wierd setup that couldn't kill the alt version, then I'd go back to troll 1-3, then back again to finish him off.

I also do kor pul before the heart of gloom, because the only thing hard about kor pul is the boss if you don't know how to fight him. Packing a teleport rune or movement infusion also lets you back out and reset your cooldowns, while in the heart it is a lot harder to clear the place before fighting the boss, so it can overwhelm you.

I like to do sandworm as my first t2 dungeon, unless I'm undead and then I'll do the old forest so I can get my cloak unlocked faster. A movement infusion is again great for sandworm, as it really cuts down on the chances of you getting trapped in a tunnel. Sandworm gives you a free level, old forest gives you the fortress, while the maze and daikara are just for unlocking dreadfall, so I do them in that order.

The biggest thing you can do is to lock problematic stuff and come back later. Have trouble with the wierdling beast? Pop in long enough to set him to a low level and then come back later. Same with urkis, pop into tempest peak at level 14-15 to set his level there, exit and come back around 20. In the west especially, leaving an area that is being troublesome, clearing some other content and coming back is a really good idea, but goes hard against the murderhobo instincts.

What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

A lot of it also depends on what class you are. Anything with slow missiles (very early Oozemancer, Archers, etc) is actually going to have a pretty bad time in Norgos because it has a HUGE amount of snakes, which have high movement speed and erratic pathing, meaning they evade your projectiles a LOT. Those classes are better off in Trollmire, because while bears and trolls may be big, they're not fast, and they tend to just lumber right on toward you. As long as you're not preoccupied with foxes or insects or something, kiting the big dudes around is much easier than running into snakes' faces (and fangs) in order to raise your chances of connecting with shots.

Always gotta pay it forward.
It's amazing how being a dwarf with that one beginning dungeon (and then deep below whenever you do it) puts you so far ahead of the leveling curve. Playing a dwarf berserker right now and I'm already level 8 without setting foot anywhere but the dwarf dungeon and clearing Trollmire.

Just so you know, Dreadfell is unlocked at level 1 if you feel like leaving your starter area and kicking some skeletons around. Leaving your starting area and walking into Dreadfell usually isn't a good idea, but you can do it.

The quest won't appear in your quest log until you clear the 4 Into the Darkness quest areas, but as far as the game is concerned, it's entirely up to you when you visit Dreadfell.

Hello!

So, one of the fun things in ToME is the lore Unlike most roguelikes, ToME actually has a setting and backstory and such. Now, for me, part of the fun is actually finding the lore notes and putting it all together - but you might want it all up front and easy to read. As such, I present: the history of Maj'Eyal. Note that it's definately a shallow overview; I skip over a lot and don't really go into much detail. Want to learn more? Find the lore in-game!

Note: all of this is absolutely a spoiler, but I don't want to make one giant post that's nothing but a spoiler, so take this as your warning.

Age of Haze: Sher'tul are murdering all the gods for having the audacity to be gods, then gently caress off through the farportals

Age of Allure: Halflings find Sher'tul ruins and start exploiting them for power, create their empire and begin enslaving everything they see including yeeks, orcs, and humans. They even make literal coats out of the yeek, I mean god drat.

Allure Wars: Human Conclave and Shaloren start finding ruins too, a big MAGE WAR begins, and now everything is awful for everyone. One Conclave test experiment escapes and creates Zigur, which ends the war by murdering ever single loving wizard they can find until there aren't enough to continue fighting. Meanwhile the dwarves are doing all they can to wipe out the race of dragons because goooooold.

Pre-Spellblaze: Allure Wars end, everyone's poo poo is wrecked. The dwarves start helping them rebuild because of capitalism, then just vanish right as the orcs decide now is their time to rise up. They're REALLY GOOD at this and everyone is freaked, so the Conclave and Shaloren team up to create an awesome weapon that would wipe out the orcs called the Spellblaze. It works really well! Whoops! Before this happens the orcs find a farportal to the East and set up colonies "just in case."

Spellblaze: EVERYTHING IS hosed. The Magic Ozone Layer gets a giant hole ripped into it, magic goes crazy, everything is on fire and blight starts pouring into the planet. Zigur begin their Spellhunt which involves murdering everything that could ever even be magical in any way. All remaining orcs are systematically wiped out, Shaloren hide their city, remaining orcs lick their wounds in the East.

Age of Dusk: Zigur finally stops killing all wizards, Linoniil founds Angolwen after devouring the energy of a dead god the Sher'Tul embarrassingly forgot to clean up. Necromancers start to appear en-masse, tyrant-warlocks start petty fiefdoms, new and exciting diseases begin to crop up, civilization more or less shrinks down. This goes on for awhile! Eventually, to show her good intentions, wizards leave Angolwen and begin curing the new diseases and helping out as much as they can while staying secretive, because Zigur is still watching for any magic using punks to come around. Dwarves start showing up again as people scratch their heads and wonder where the hell they went. Most people know mages helped cure the diseases, but most people figure they also made them, so it's a bit of a wash.

Cataclysm: Whoops guess the Spellblaze wasn't done, huh? Naloren become naga after their entire part of the continent decides it's better down where it's wetter and the Naloren decide gills would be really nice right about now. The whole continent is pretty much ruined; Daikara (and a bunch of other volcanos) erupt, the Nur Plains become Lake Nur, the island of Rel drifts away and the yeek create the Way because gently caress halflings. Humans sail east to find out what happened to all that land that left, spoilers: they don't find it because it's at the bottom of the ocean, but hey, they do find a whole new continent to the east! Orcs say hello, humans politely greet them back, by which I mean they immediately begin slaughtering each other. Eastern humans find native Shaloren who aren't actually connected to the western Shaloren, found the Sunwall and Gates of Morning ,they teach each other how to make the Celestial classes. Garkul the Devourer, a name you can trust, decides it's time to put his plan into motion. His plan is to murder everything in the loving universe. Orcs learn how to be Corruptors long before the Shaloren figure it out, Shaloren confirmed to be terribe at most everything.

Age of Pyre: Orcs swing on by the western continent via farportal to cook everyone dinner. Dinner is their cities. Orcs proceed to light everything on fire, name the age themselves, and Garkul himself kills probably like ten billion halflings and humans. Everyone freaks out again and the halflings and humans try to put aside their differences and fight together; it helps that the orcs are only making a few side swipes at humans and are far more concerned with their mass halfling genocide (which, mind you, the halflings did to them first). Dwarves start to get involved, which makes the orcs notice them and begin burning their cities which are made of rock; dwarves protest that cities made of rock really shouldn't be burning and swiftly stop being involved (but continue to send weapons to the non-orcs in secret). Orcs begin colonizing the land after the conquer it, leaving only a small token force in the East after pushing the eastern alliance of humans and elves all the way back into the Gates of Morning and Sunwall. Mages of Angolwen and Zigur both join the alliance against the orcs, probably knowing that the other is there, but sticking to their main goal of getting rid of the tuskies. Garkul eventually eats it after taking down Atamathon and a halfling army AND a human army, good lord, most PCs can't even handle the already damaged Atamathon. The human king and halfling queen win the war together and get married and everyone is super happy and it's really sweet and the two races are finally united together; also, mass genocide of all orcs, explicitly hunting down and killing any women and children, ensuring the "orc menace" is literally wiped clean from the planet, whoops guess who doesn't know about the East.

Age of Ascendancy: The half-halfling and half-human prince is born and the Allied Kingdoms are formed. Dwarves reopen all their trade routes but keep their cities a secret, no non-dwarves allowed. Angolwen and Zigur both quietly fade into the background and begin glaring at each other, with Zigur sending out patrols and Angolwen placing agents in some of the cities. People are still suspicious of mages but won't murder them in the street. Zigur is proven completely correct as the Shaloren figure out how to unlock the Defiler metaclass and the Rhaloren split off, preaching magical supremacy. Zigur is unknowingly proven even more correct as two Angolwen mages go exploring East and decide to bring back one of the long-dead gods that hates all creation and wishes to end all life, cool idea man. They disguise themselves as orcs, fool pretty much none of the actual orc leaders, but dangle enough power and revenge in front of them to get their attention. Orcs begin sending scouts through the Iron Throne farportal to check out the west. Adventurers start adventuring. You make your character!

You don't, unless you can get all the way to the end of that line of enemies in a controlled manner - if you've been putting points in Conveyance then you have a shot. She's going to run, and probably she will have a turn or two before she dies, so you could theoretically get between them and her if she can get a little distance and then tell her to wait so that she doesn't run forward into the inevitable Storm Giant boulderthrower/family of storm drakes/etc. that's probably further up the corridor. Also, you have Lightning, which is a beam attack - you could damage them all with one shot of that. Unfortunately, I doubt a Shadowblade has the magic to kill them in one shot - it'd be tough even for an archmage, necromancer, or anorithil to do that, but they could break out other beams/AoEs/etc. A Corruptor could just cast Pacification Hex on the guys close to her and probably have time to kill them all before it wore off. This would be a 100% fail situation for anybody but the classes that are adept at precisely targeted area attacks. Even then the orc pyromancer would mulch her instantaneously if he decided to target her instead of the player.

I ended up casting Illuminate to blind the orcs and then Shadow Stepping to the escort's side.

It would have worked, too, except that just offscreen in that screenshot there's five giants and giant thunderers.

With those odds, I think my only option would have been to hit her with Teleport and hope she landed near the portal.

quote:

But don't worry, you really don't need absolutely every possible advantage to win with a character most of the time. It sucks that you're losing an anorithil escort, but if you feel like getting back at the game for its bullshit then you can game the next escort you get. Escort class is randomly generated on the spot, so if you crash the game by ending the process you can go back to the beginning of the zone and reroll the class. Make that loremaster an anorithil! None of the loot or encounters will change, just the escort. I don't endorse doing this on a character you genuinely feel could win, since it cheapens it a little, but if you're just trying to learn the game it won't hurt anything.

Thankfully I already got Celestial/Light off another Anorithil, I was just hoping to be able to get +1 Healing Light for free.

Also, that trick won't work for me because I have it set to save every level transition rather than every zone transition, after a few crashes that cost me a bunch of progress.

I really wish someone was doing an informative video series. If not on the game as a whole then on specific characters. I know the wiki has some guides, but (last I checked, anyway) they were all short and not great and just sort of go "Put points here, not here. Now do this" without getting into the why of it. I want to see someone play, see why things work and why others don't, and how you should tackle things so you don't get overwhelmed.

For instance, no matter what race I use, I can't get a Cursed character above level 10. They're so incredibly weak! They die if a stiff wind kicks up, their attacks do absolutely nothing, their Sustained skills seem to Sustain off of thin air, and I have no idea which generics I need to focus on. Do I put points into Armor Training until I get to Plate? Do I work on maxing Unnatural Body first? Is Thick Skin completely useless or is it worth pumping the points into? 15% is not a large number. What about Combat Accuracy? I don't think I've seen any other class miss hits more than a Cursed character does. But does that matter when their hits are all so flimsy?

Dying constantly as a class leads to getting frustrated, getting frustrated leads to not wanting to play. Mirthless started out explaining things pretty well, but then it devolved into long periods of silence and him getting huffy after dying to stuff he shouldn't have been dying to. Plus he fell off the face of the earth and didn't do very many classes!

You're dumb and wrong sorry. Cursed have a really bad start, unless they're Cornac, so play a Cornac Cursed. Unlock Rampage and max the first three skills like, immediately. Like put one point in Gloom and one point in whatever else at the start and just every other point is RAMPAGE RAMPAGE RAMPAGE until it's 5/5/5/0 (the last skill is garbage, don't take it). Neglect Will to pile up Strength and Con at the start. You are doing this because Strength lets you Rampage Better and get more points in Armour Training and Weapon Mastery, which makes you not die and make things die better, respectively. Con makes you not die better. Rampage is loving busted good and will turn you into a screaming wall of dismemberment.

Once all of your rampage stuff is maxed, go for Preternatural Senses and Blindside because they rule, and build towards Surge. Put points in Gloom occasionally to keep all your enemies making GBS threads themselves all the time. These skills will let you go super loving fast and see poo poo through walls and then stab them through the walls because gently caress walls. The hardest pride boss for me when I play Cursed is the Geomancer in Vor Pride, because Cursed (at least, when I play them) have a diminished healing factor and I don't ever have enough resists to keep the nukes and field effects from bringing me down before I inflict an appreciable amount of damage. That guy is second hardest because he's tanky as hell and will hit you while you're running away if you aren't careful.

Third win, Dwarf Wyrmic This was my first time getting far with a Shield character, and while I think shields have kind of a slow early game due to weak bump damage and only one attack button you want to use, that late game assault for 2k damage every few turns is awesome, and I was swapping out shields to max resist on whatever bullshit was in each pride. This was probably my most fun character to play thus far because you've got great ranged/casting options but you're also a juggernaut in melee.

I think I'll try Arcane Blade next. Or, with all this talk about Corruptors and Cursed, does anyone like Reavers?

If you are new at Cursed, you want to be a Cornac and unlock the Rampage tree ASAP. The first skill lets you move and attack fast, the second skill makes you hit hard, and the third skill lets you always be ignoring damage. Non-Cornac Cursed have something of a slow start, but at level 8, you can rejiggle your points so you get one in Blindside and one in Reckless Charge and run around the battlefield. I actually defeated the Orc Ambush with my Cursed by Murdertraining/Deathwarping into wherever the weakest enemies were and having them explode incidentally until it was a one on one showdown between THE ANGRIEST ELF and BIG ORC DOUCHE. Level 8 is like, two baby dungeons. I used to think Cursed were bad, and usually when people think a good class is bad it's a matter of not knowing what talents help you survive the early game (and to a lesser extent, which are important in the midgame and endgame).

For generics, I raise Armor/Accuracy/Weapon Mastery pretty evenly at first, with a rough priority being Accuracy->Weapon Mastery->Armor. Unnatural Body won't do poo poo for you after, like, level 4, but the skill after it is amazing.

Non-Cornac Cursed is terrible. Put your first cat point in Rampage, max the Rampage skill then put one point in pretty much every other class skill til you get Surge unlocked and max that. Then go back and max the Rampage passives and start putting points in murdervision, blindside, sanctuary, and predator to taste. Generics go in the second skill on Cursed Form and various Combat Training skills (max thick skin, combat accuracy and weapon mastery, get armor mastery to level 3) and put the rest in antimagic and fungus skills once you get those unlocked.

Honestly, I actually prefer non-Cornac Cursed because once you're good enough at the game you don't really need early Rampage and it means you get racials that matter instead of a category point that in the long run becomes a waste. This of course depends on if you're absolutely set on doing something like going both AM and taking cursed items though cause then obviously that's not gonna work too well, but just the fact that you have a choice is cool.

Of course I'd still say Cornac is better by a loooong shot for anyone not familiar with the class.

Also note that "resist all" is apparently applied separately from any actual elemental resist you have (source: discussion on aether permeation prodigy), so if your character sheet lists resist all 15% and resist fire 30%, you're actually resisting fire by 41.5%. I think. Someone please correct me if I'm misreading that.

This is true, but I am fairly certain the resist char sheet show the correct final number. My resist tend to be higher than what my equipment says I have.

But thick skin is still worth 5/5. A passive that makes you less likely to die is a very good thing. I tend to get it to 1/5 by like level 12ish, 2/5 by 20ish, 3/5 by 30ish, and 5/5 by 35ish.

Yeah, at this point I think it's possible I could do a non-Cornac cursed, but on the other hand, going heavily into AM eats up points fine, and I don't feel like any of them are wasted. Level 5 AM Shield knocks 58 off everything that hits me, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Unless stuff is hitting me for at least like 300 a hit, that's almost 20% resist all magic - 5/1/5/1 fungus means that my AM shield almost never goes down, because I have to be getting hit by at least two spells every round to overwhelm the 3 equilibrium/round I get.

On the other hand, dorf racials :swoon:

DORF! Gotta be solid, stout, and have lots of core strength for butcherin!

More gameplay questions: So I just hit 8k gold, I'm planning to go get some crazy merchant gloves. What should I get for my second piece? I'm kinda thinking amulet, since I have the Feathersteel and it's not really doing me any good anymore - I have plenty of passive movespeed between 80% surge and 20% from the acorn. Are there any other slots that are bonkers good the way gloves seem to be?

The hardest pride boss for me when I play Cursed is the Geomancer in Vor Pride, because Cursed (at least, when I play them) have a diminished healing factor and I don't ever have enough resists to keep the nukes and field effects from bringing me down before I inflict an appreciable amount of damage. That guy is second hardest because he's tanky as hell and will hit you while you're running away if you aren't careful.

Do you go Antimagic on Cursed? I just fought the Vor dude - I figured out where he was with a scouting item I have, cleared the rest of the level, then blindsided him, ate ~400 damage in a Meteor Crash nuke, threw Silence of Aura at him, and pounded him into the dirt while he was silenced and flailing on me with his staff. Aura of Silence, if it sticks, completely shuts him down (and you can just sprint away if it doesn't stick). Hopefully that helps if you do another Cursed :)

The strongest! The smartest!

You can buy lore in some towns!

In the Shalore town you can buy the diary of the current Shaloren king and former Arcane Blade regarding the time right before and during the Spellblaze, which also includes the founding of Angolwen. See, the Sher'tul were nothing if not efficient and made sure there were no gods left on the planet. They just forgot to throw one of the dead ones away, which she found and used to hypercharge herself to build Angolwen. It's kinda fun to see the lore characters reacting to various Horror monsters exactly as PCs do ("WHAT IS THAT, OH GOD I CAN'T HURT THE SHINY ONES")

In Last Hope you can buy the former king's writings on the end of the Age of Pyre and the war against the orcs, and a few unrelated stories that aren't connected to, well, anything.

Angolwen and Zigur both have vague propaganda and mission statements, if I recall.

The general best 'I dunno what the gently caress I want' slots are amulet, ring, and light source. So, whichever you feel you're weakest in, those are all good bets.

I think I'll try Arcane Blade next. Or, with all this talk about Corruptors and Cursed, does anyone like Reavers?

Reavers have absurd damage in melee range (their burst is ridiculous), decent survivability with vimsense+leech and bone shield and horrible mobility/status removal. I really like ghoul reavers especially since ghoul leap helps your mobility and rot synergises with vimsense (and ghoul bite disease can be spread by epidemic for lategame ghoul armies).

If you want to do ridiculous damage, reavers are the class for you. Worm that walks showcase how scary a reaver can be.

God drat, finally I beat a roguelike! Albeit not on roguelike difficulty!

http://te4.org/characters/95164/tome/6ae0c6a7-0c52-42ea-8d36-829dabb2c220

The beginning was rather rough, encountered that named troll in level two of Trollmire and he done kilt me good.

I had been incredibly lucky with my weapon. A disrupting maul that just beat the brains out of mages. Other lucky and irreplaceable drops being ring of growth, girdle of calm waters, a friggin tree of life and withering orbs. I never did get anything with blindness resist so those orbs were a mainstay for most of my gameplay.

During this playthrough, using tips from this thread, I got a brand new appreciation for the strife tree and Endless Hunt's stalk. Cursed, where you're so pissed off, you'll teleport through solid rock to hit that god drat blinking mage. :fuckoff:

The problem with Reavers is that they give up the Corruptor's best trees for the privilege of getting up in people's faces with no added survivability. You have no crowd control to speak of, you hit for 3-4 different elements on a regular basis and you still have all the Corruptor's cooldown issues because everything in Corruption/Scourge takes forever to cooldown.

You CAN get a goofy build going with staff combat and a pair of short staves so that you might actually have the stats to make the actual spells worth casting but you're probably not going to have the money or the equipment til Dreadfell or so.

Rest In Hate, sweet KILLDOZER. I did dumb things with you one too many times. Biggest mistake was taking the 'shrug off mental stuff' prodigy - Confusion really isn't that bad when moving in the wrong direction only eats a sixth of a turn.

Level 49, too - was doing farportals to hit 50 before I went to the slime tunnel when I got roasted by a Summoner rare bloated horror. I see what people mean about the East though - it turns into a complete slog in places, imo because you wind up fighting like 25 enemies at a time and it just takes forever to chew through that much goddamned HP.

I think it's time for a Wildfire Archmage, they look very fun. Burny Claus is coming to to town to give everyone coal. Flaming coal.

Oh, actually the dual shortstaff build isn't that goofy because you have no use for mana otherwise and channel staff shoots both staves if you have 2 and doesn't have a cooldown. And then you get your free bonks from corrupted strength. So I'd just about call staff combat a requirement now.

Oh, it doesn't actually shoot both, I just lost track in the rain of numbers. You do still get the blight damage, spellpower and spell crit bonuses from both of them cranking up your damage to stupid levels, at least.

Blunt Thrust, however, does bonk with both staves before getting the free bonks from corrupted strength. Now if only I had a GWF ring.
