Jonny Fritz (formerly Jonny Corndawg) is fantastic. Saw him open for Langhorne Slim (not a fan at all) back in October and he was terrific. Most fun I've had during an opening act possibly ever. Live it was him on acoustic guitar and another guy switching between fiddle, electric and stand up bass, and acoustic guitar. Studio has a much fuller sound, and it is just as great. Really nice dude, like really nice and really happy to be there opening for, I think, Lucero. He was really excited about his merch which included homemade leather belts and t-shirts that he screen printed himself with random images. He also gave a coworker his business card which I believe listed his talents as "Leatherworking, Pet Portraits, Country Music" in that order.

I've never really been much into this type of music but I saw a local guy named Tyler Childers play at a bar in Lexington this weekend. His voice just blew me away...so smokey and soulful. For anyone with a Showtime subscription, they are playing a concert film called Another Day, Another Time, with a bunch of folk artists from the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack (the Coen Brothers' new movie about the early '60s New York folk scene). I tuned in for Jack White and Colin Meloy from the Decemberists, but the concert has introduced me to the Punch Brothers and Rhiannon Giddens, who were incredible, as well as several other modern folk artists I was unfamiliar with. T-Bone Burnett produced the soundtrack and this concert documentary, and Gillian Welch shows up too -- she worked with him on the Coen Brothers' earlier soundtrack for the wonderful O Brother, Where Art Thou?. I started watching it on Showtime OnDemand so I haven't made it to the end, but Joan Baez and Elvis Costello are supposed to show up as well. It's just an awesome group of artists having a great time, and if you like guitars and mandolins and banjos and stuff, you need to check it out.

Most of this stuff is available now via large compilations, but Mississippi Records puts out a few very nice smaller comps on vinyl. Earl Scruggs was amazing. I know a guy who played with him once and he described him as incredibly generous, musically. He said "He never stepped on anybody, he'd just watch someone else lay down an incredible line and get this sly smile on his face. Then he'd lay down his own incredible line and get the same smile." Here he is on Letterman a few years ago, an old man in his 80s doing Foggy Mountain Breakdown in a 55-degree television studio. Been meaning to post this for a while. Each Sunday night from 5pm-8pm eastern WFPK hosts a program called Roots and Boots and it features quite a bit of new material. If you are a fan of old Bluegrass and Country, Sunday night is a pretty good time to listen online to WSM as they play old shows from the Opry.

You're nuts, "Go Go Boots" is a great album. "I Do Believe" is one of those songs that is guaranteed to put a smile on my face every time I hear it. "Cartoon Gold" single-handedly justifies the entire existence of DBT just by virtue of Cooley's line about the dog poo poo. Both of the Eddie Hinton covers are spot on. "The Weakest Man" slays me with that little accordion tag at the end. "Used To Be a Cop" fuses Hood's patented seedy underbelly storytelling with a sweet dance beat. I may be the only person in the world who really likes "The Fireplace Poker." I mean really, really likes it. Some might (and have) said that it's a little ridiculous to have two songs about the same thing on the same album, but the contrast between "Go Go Boots" and "The Fireplace Poker" is an endlessly fascinating one to me. The former has that incredible, nasty, evil sneer to it. The latter replaces it with mournful humanity. This juxtaposition gets me every time: "The Bible said that Jesus bled for the sins of the rest of us / The reverend had his wife done in for fifteen hundred bucks." Moving on, "The Thanksgiving Filter" is the quintessential Thanksgiving song, "Pulaski" is solid classic Cooley, and "Mercy Buckets" is the love song that "Back of a Bible" should have been. "Dancin' Ricky" is, of course, thoroughly awful; "Assholes" should have been written and then burned. "Ray's Automatic Weapon" I could take or leave. It's not a perfect album by any means, but I think it's pretty far from sucking. I sometimes think they should have taken the best songs from "The Big To-Do" and "Go Go Boots" and fused them into one great album instead of two good albums but I honestly think there's too many good songs between the two of them for that. (And still a song as fantastic as "Girls Who Smoke" manages to only be a bonus track?!) Anyway. I'm a superfan, I admit it, they could put out 80 minutes of aimlessly noodling in the studio and I'd probably defend it. Needless to say I'm excited as hell for "English Oceans." (There is a God, He does love us, and "more Cooley" is how we know.) We didn't get a chance to go see the rock show in 2013. This year we're planning on taking the kids to Disneyland on vacation but I'm not booking a thing until I see a tour schedule because I'll be damned if I go another year without it.

I stumbled on The Parlor Soldiers a while back, I believe through ninebullets. The best description I've got is stolen from there, that they're a more interesting version of the Civil Wars. Shallow Grave & Sinner are a couple of great murder ballads, Long Gone is a lo-fi rockabilly tune reminiscent of Johnny & June's Jackson. I saw Blackberry Smoke for the first time and holy poo poo what a great band live. Awesome guitar sound and really good harmonies. In two weeks I'm seeing Jason Isbell in a tiny little club here in St. Louis (he sold it out and actually is now doing two shows to meet demand) and I'm pretty pumped. This is followed up by the Truckers heading here in March. What a great 3 month run. EDIT - hearing that there is "more Cooley" on English Oceans has me excited. I do love me some Hood at times, but all my favorite DBT tunes are Cooley ones.

I'm very bummed about Seeger. He was one of the true folk / traditional music masters still around. Seeing him participate in protests while in his fuckin' 90s is still one the coolest things I've see seen. I've got his rendition of "Deep Blue Sea" running all through my brain right now. R.I.P

I streamed it the other day and was fairly impressed by that second disc. Certainly worth picking up. Also, I still have my original Uncle Tupelo CDs and had never heard the remastered stuff from 2003. They did a great job punching up their sound.

RIP Pete! I have this Amnesty International 4 CD set full of Dylan covers and the only song I regularly listen to is Pete's cover of "Forever Young" which is crazy awesome. His voice shows all his age but is still so full of optimism and love. The childrens' choir should be kitschy as all gently caress but somehow it just sounds like the world's coolest grandpa singing with his family. I saw Jason Isbell last night at the first of two sold out shows in St. Louis. loving amazing live. He and his wife Amanda have such a great chemistry together on stage and when doing duets remind me so much of Johnny Cash and June Carter with that vibe (their cover of Warren Zevon's Mutineer was one of the highlights of the night). He played almost all of Southeastern and included a few of his better older songs (including some Trucker classics). Sobriety has been so good to him and it's wonderful to see him start shooting up the ladder. If you get a chance to him and the 400 unit on this tour you really should. The guy is in his prime. Conor Oberst released a song from his Nashville recorded album a few days ago. I guess it's pretty okay but for someone who says "I don't relate to a lot of my earlier songs," and "I don't know if it makes me an rear end in a top hat to not want to talk to my fans. But I'm not going to sit on a loving computer and try to talk to some loving 16-year-old in wherever-the-gently caress." I feel a tad skeptical.
