When it comes to Louise and Saji, first time I saw them throughout the show, I asked, "What's the point of focusing on these two?" Then Team Trinity happened as well as the rest of S2 in Gundam 00.

Actually, Lordgenome and Gaioh are quite cordial - the Spiral King tells Gaioh he can "consider me a comrade of sorts." You see, Lordgenome knows of Gaioh, or at least, has heard of him. However, Gaioh turns down his offer to just explain everything directly. His memories are his own, and he'd really like to get them back himself. He just came to see if talking to Lordgenome could unlock some.

And he is beginning to remember, dimly, but he just can't reach them. Lordgenome gives him a clue: to go to the Moon. Gaioh says he's already spoken to the WILL up there (whoops, that's the other route), but no, says Lordgenome. "The other moon. There, you'll find the key to your past... though to be honest, I hope you never remember."

Gaioh growls, but he's not prepared to get his answers from Lordgenome by force. He wants to see Lordgenome fight first. Lordgenome warns him that if he wins, Gaioh will never get his memories back. "If you do, then we can have a round," chuckles Gaioh. "Nothing about my memories. Just for me."

But for Lordgenome, Gaioh's thirst for battle is the biggest sign of all that his memories are in his grasp. "Then I must destroy the spiral man. To defend this world... and this universe."

Chapter 44: The Spiral King, Enraged
(Dark Continent route)

Oh, just who I wanted to see.

Simon is still leading the charge; the capitol, Teppelin, is literally in sight. They just have to get through the final line of defense, but this is going to be the hardest part. Especially with not only Timp, claiming he always sees his contracts through to the end...

But Viral, who has been given a new, more powerful body that needs no rest. "I am more than beastman! And I'll take you to your grave, Simon!"

We've certainly got all the actors here for a good final battle...

The pattern here is the usual boss pattern: defeat Enkidudu (really?) to win, defeat him last for the SR Point. Or so it seems - I'm going to knock down Enkidudu pretty quickly, because despite what Viral may think, he doesn't end the map.

Making the charge - Simon and the Getter team taking the lead, of course.

Timp is kind of pathetic!

Simon! You will face me!
Step aside, Viral! I'm here for the Spiral King!
I will not! You will fall to the new power I was granted by the Spiral King, and to this Enkidudu!
Then I'll make you get out of my way...
By drilling straight through you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3zUSeVU5SU

Viral actually puts up a fight! He's the rival and it's his best attack so here's a video.

I swear I upgraded these guys. Dammit, Timp.

Just gonna finish him. And no, Jiron literally has nothing to say to him before he beats the hell out of him.

He generously drops a Cartridge (?) and a lump of 30,000 Gs. Timp flees - "I'm used to it at this point," grumbles Jiron. Wonder what douchebags he'll hook up with by the next time we see him!

Viral is still a bit more of a challenge.

Banjou joins the ranks of pilots who can throw Valor around. I think we already had Simon, Kouji, Ryoma, Crowe, and Akagi (Soul).

Oh, wait, I can look it up. Yeah, we have five people capable of using Valor. It's an important Spirit!

Wow, Viral was pretty annoying.

He drops a Muscle Cylinder though. Wonder where he got that.

Oh, and Rossiu learns Valor.

This is not going to be healthy.

Why? Why can't I defeat them?
Please, Spiral King, tell me! Why... why can't I...
Viral... poor Viral.
!
Father...
Then that's...
That's the Spiral King...
Lordgenome!
Viral. The power I granted you was not to defeat the humans.
Then...?
You were never to be a match for the humans wielding the Power of Spiral.
What?
Viral, I granted you an immortal, deathless body. But not for battle.
You are to become a storyteller, and tell the tale of the Spiral King's victory for eternity.
A storyteller?!
Stand and watch the end of foolish humanity.
Tell the tale forever... the tale of the foolishness of rebelling against the Spiral King!

Well, that looks like what Gurren-Lagann does! Kinon says the same thing: Lordgenome is emitting exactly the same readings the Gurren-Lagann does!

There's another Gurren-Lagann over there!

Unfazed, Nia demands to know why Lordgenome kills all humans on the surface. Lordgenome just laughs: "The danger of ignorance!"

He's laughing at us as well, he says. "You may believe you are on the side of right, but I am defending this planet. I, Lordgenome, am the true protector of humanity."

It sounds like bullshit, but Roger says he's completely convinced of what he's saying. Lordgenome continues: the only hope for humanity's survival is to live under his guidance. If our aim is to break down that structure, then for him to kill the GOONZ would be a mercy to humanity.

No one cares. We'll stop him by force! Again Lordgenome looks grim: we don't even know that the Spiral Power welling up within us will lead to the world's destruction. "But you are not the only ones who wield the Power of Spiral. I will show you its true might... through the Rasengann!"

It looks like Gaioh sent him a parting gift, too - though one he didn't ask for, by the sounds of it. Lordgenome refuses to tell us what he knows about Gaioh, but murmurs: "There was once a man who fought as you fight. He, too, didn't realize that his actions were dooming humanity."

Lordgenome is the actual endpoint of this chapter, so in this case, we are going to have to take out every enemy and then finish off the Rasengann. And that does include the Dinodamons.

I hate Dinodamons.

And because this is a very special arc boss...

Rasengann (Lordgenome)

Ultimate Art: Clear Mind Spiral Spin (10 EN, 110 Will, Barrier, size)
Ace Bonus: Will limit +30.

Hoo loving boy.

He has pretty much every awful boss skill except Prevail, his 20% HP regen is really 30% once his Spiral Drive kicks in, he can drain Will, and he has an Ace Bonus. Late game bosses gain Ace Bonuses on Hard - on lower difficulties, they begin with just a few kills shy. Lordgenome dares to have exactly the same bonus as Kamina did!

Plus he has nearly 100,000 HP, so the regeneration is measured in twenty or thirty thousands.

Oh, and of course, the S-Adapter gives him S ranks in all terrains with all weapons.

It's gonna be a bit of a fight.

At this stage, it might be a bit of a fight taking down all those Ganmen in time to crush those Dinodamons and Lordgenome, but it's only turn 2. I've got time.

Zero just learned another incredibly important late game Spirit: Panic, which cuts the accuracy of all enemies in half for the entire round. I might have to start using it right away.

Anyway, that's two Cannon Gannons down to Photon Beam. Mazin go!

How good is Lordgenome? He can't miss Gurren-Lagann when it's evading.

Lordgenome!
Spiral man, you will regret your actions if you continue.
You will lead this planet to an inescapable fate.
An inescapable...
Don't listen to him, Rossiu! We'll figure it out after we take him down!
Even now, you insist on fighting...
Very well! The time for words is over! I will use my full power!
Bring it ooooooooooon!
Your Spiral Power and mine! I will show you which is stronger!

...that was defending.

And then he does it again.

I really hate Dinodamons.

All of GOONZ spends all of turn 3 dealing with them. Forget it.

Rossiu can help by using Alert, which combined with his Ace Bonus free Invincible, buffers Gurren-Lagann against two attacks. Which is good. Because Lordgenome has two attacks.

Should probably heal up to be safe though.

And draw Lordgenome back into GOONZ' formation (this will open me up to his MAP attack, but it'll help with the pile-on).

Or I guess he could just go after Crowe!

Jerk.

Bearer of a fragment.
A fragment? What are you talking about?
It was shattered into twelve souls and countless revelations and fell across the cosmos.
And those twelve souls are...!
I am one of those who has seen the end! I cannot overlook your power!
So you know something about the Spheres...
Then we've got something to talk about! I can't let you break this machine!

Oh, come on.

drat it! Now I'll never pay off my debt...

gently caress.

gently caress, gently caress, gently caress.

Okay, fine. Let's do this thing.

Panic is, of course, expensive, but now's as good a time as any to use it.

You have the power of the King.
You know about the Geass?
He is a King himself, is he not?
The Power of the King isolates men. What do you hope to gain?
What a foolish question. I intend to gain the world!
I see. You are just like me.
I'll make you take back those words. I refuse to be anything like you!
Lordgenome, Spiral King! You have no place in the world I will create!

Wielder of the power of God. Why don't you realize that your war will lead humanity to its ruin?
You mean Photon Power?
The God who sided with humans long ago... your power is too great for them.
It gave them something they did not deserve... hope!
I don't have to take this! How can there ever be anything wrong with having hope?
If you wanna deny us our hope, you're our... all humanity's enemy! And Mazinger Z and I will be there to stop you!

This might be easier than previously thought. Not less dangerous, but not as long.

Okay, Your Royal Beastiness! We're gonna beat you up and put an end to this war!
A child? Striking blindly at the darkness, ignorant of the law of the universe.
I am a kid! But you may be a thousand years older than me, but you're still way more stupid!
Oh?
'cause you think you can protect the world by making innocent, hard-working people suffer!
You wanna save the world? Then butt out!
Purity of heart born of ignorance. Indeed, something I have long lost...
But that means it is all the more crucial that I destroy you!

Come on, king! You gotta deal with me and Zambot!
Foolish infant. You do not realize the difference in our power.
Kappei! We have to admit, he's crazy strong!
I don't know if Zambot can handle it...
Shaddup! You gotta have faith or we'll never win!
I don't know about you, but I'm fighting! We can't back down no matter how strong he is!
I misjudged you, child. You are a true warrior.
So face my true might! I will duel you with my full strength!
Get me if you can! But I'm not gonna lose!

Thank god for Alert.

Lordgenome, the Spiral King. Once we defeat you, we'll get all our answers!
I respect your spirit... but are you capable of defeating me?
I have no fear at all of a man who kills and excuses it saying he is defending humanity!
You're just avoiding your problems! I won't let a man like you best me!
He's... like the Sun... powerful... blazing hot... and high, higher than any other!
I see your true danger! Humanity has no need of the sunlight!
Spiral King, the great shadow over the world! I will take the sunlight back for this world's people!

Under the rule of a king who doesn't love his own daughter? Sucks to be the beastmen, huh?
Love? Do you know how perilous it is to let it lead you astray?
Couldn't tell you. I can't think of anything more important than love.
The love between people is the strongest force in the world!
I refuse to accept that power! Or respect any who let it blind them!
Yeah? Then we'll prove that power humans have by defeating you!

Lordgenome, Spiral King. I'm afraid you're immune to the effect of my most potent weapon.
Declaring defeat before the battle begins?
Not quite. I only meant that you're not one to sit at the negotiating table.
You don't understand me? I suppose one who does not know the truth wouldn't.
That arrogance, to not even treat your peers as human, is the greatest of your crimes.
I can't allow such a man to rule over and oppress humanity!
Then face me with force! If you are capable of defeating me with force rather than words!

The strands of fate twist around you. Are you...?
...
Interesting. To find one of the humans he desires here.
But if you dare face me in battle, your life is forfeit... my powers far exceed yours!
I cannot afford to die. I have goals beyond this battle.

Locked on. Target: Spiral King.
Not wasting energy on needless words. You are a true warrior.
But know that this war will bring you only sorrow.
I don't know or care for the future. Just that my mission is your death.
Very well! Then I will visit your sorrow upon you now!

We just have to defeat him and we can end the fighting between the humans and the beastmen!
And begin a new war, a bitter war without end.
Though it won't happen, since you will not defeat me.
People refusing to understand each other like that that starts wars in the first place! Don't you get it?
Wars begin because people won't understand each other? I know that quite well.
How dare you presume to lecture the Spiral King!
You don't get it, do you? Looks like you don't get how hard we're willing to fight, either!
Come on, King Gainer! He may be the Spiral King, but we're the King too!

That's the Spiral King...
That energy... it's heavier than the King of Destruction's!
Foolish humans. I will send you to your peace.
I've had just about enough of your selfishness!
What?
All of us want peace and happiness and liberty! We're not just going to give it up with a smile because you demand it!
Smile? I can't remember the last time I truly smiled...
We'll fight you for a future where all of us can live with smiles on our faces!

I can feel the presence of something inhuman.
...
That's enough! Eureka's a person with a heart!
A heart? And what use do you think that is?
Are you serious? You don't know it gives you power when you think of somebody?
I'll fight anyone and anything to protect Eureka!
And when a foe comes which even that power cannot stand against, humanity will meet its end.
A heart won't help you then! Allow me to demonstrate!

I sense it... the power of evolution.
Evolution?!
!
What's the matter, Hayato?
The Invaders... the Getter radiation... Professor Saotome... evolution... the threat that connects them all...
Is none of your concern. Humanity will stop in time.
Sorry, Spiral King. We don't let anyone tell us how to live our lives.
We'll deal with old man Saotome later! If you want to hold humanity down, we've gotta throw you off our backs!
Evolution, a force that drives creatures forward... it has you in its grasp!
That's enough blabbering! My blood's running hotter and hotter, Spiral King!
Let's find out who's stronger - you or me!

Lordgenome's not quite dead yet, which is fine. Honestly, I could have taken him down easily (with different ordering of attacks, to surround him faster, and use of Analyze, that's several thousand extra damage right there). There's a turn left, I have to knock out some Ganmen first anyway, and there are a few more conversations to have, too.

The downside, of course, is that he's likely to use is MAP attack, and it's likely to take down a few units. Also, he'll gain back another 30k or so HP, but that's actually fairly easy to deal with if I can keep a few super robots on their feet.

Yeah, stuff like this.

Eureka! Eurekaaaa!
C-Continue... that's not going to work, is it?
No... I can't fall now...
Whoops! I'm gonna have to pay for this!
It may be a new world, but it's still tough to be popular...
Cannot continue mission. Retreating.
...!

At least Roger's alive.

(And that was with Panic on him, of course. His accuracy was halved and he hit every target.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG_tx4s8zoA

G-good enemy turn?

You'll pay for everyone the beastmen killed - for Kamina!
Revenge, then? You cannot defeat me over something so petty.
And you can't beat me if you think peoples' lives are petty!
You know what a life is worth?
Then I will take your life - to protect this world!
That doesn't make any sense! But we'll keep going! Right through you!

There you are, Nia.
Father... no, I cannot consider you my father any more!
Did the spiral wielder give you that strength?
Not Simon alone! The Great Gurren Gang and all of GOONZ taught me to be strong!
Tell him, Nia! You're not alone!
Everyone, charge! We'll take down the Spiral King with the Great Gurren Kamina won for us!
So you dare stand against me, humans... and Nia!
Then I will take your hope before you have a chance to know true despair!

Okay, so, time for some housekeeping.

Finish those Ganmen...

Refill the boat...

Weaken the Spiral King a bit, of course.

And set up Courage for the finish!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjIGV2E5dpU

WHEW. He drops his S-Adapter and a mountain of experience. (Yes, I had to post that move again.)

As, you know, always, Lordgenome has a bit of fight left him him. He declares that he is invincible and immortal and thus cannot be defeated! Simon refuses to give up, but the Spiral King is stronger, and Gurren-Lagann is drained just withstanding the assault...

Simon! If believing in you gives you power, then I will believe with all my heart!
Us too!
You can do it, Simon! Spin that drill!
Just do it, Simon!
You gotta do better than your bro!
You're the one holding that drill!
Wherever you go, you leave a tunnel behind!
Simon! This is on you!
You must win, Simon!
!
It was my first challenge in a long time, boy, but it's time for you to return to the earth!
Not yet!

What?
I'm Simon! Simon the Digger, chief of the Great Gurren Gang! If you're going to be a wall in my way...
Then I'll put a big hole right through you!

Whooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaahhh!

This ends here!

Giga!

Drill!

BREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!

Gahahahahahahahahahaha!

Simon!
This is my drill!
So I was defeated... by a Spiral Power greater than my own...
Hah hah hah hah! You will come to regret this!
Lordgenome?
Hey, we're not done with you yet!
Simon beat you, and now you're going to give us some answers!
I'll tell you just one thing.
When ten billion monkeys crawl upon the earth, the Moon will become the envoy of Hell and bring the world of spiral to ruin.
What?
What does that mean?
You'll find out for yourself! You who now bear the burden of defending humanity!

Goodbye, Lordgenome. And with all the beastmen commanders dead, the war is over. Nia allows herself a moment of grieving, but she knows that all of us have to look to humanity's future. The world isn't safe yet, but we can continue to fight.

And the Nirvash is expensive. Or would be, but for Negotiator.

First up on the list, the Frontier's discovered another Vajra hive. A hive sounds like serious trouble - mere clusters of them were bad enough - so Ohtsuka would like us to rendezvous with the Quarter and the Ptolemaios up in space. We'll get there through the base in Japan, he says, but Leeron figures s/he (?) can fix up the Great Gurren and its complement to be spaceworthy with a little time. They'll still have to do it at the Japan base, so that's where we're headed for now. The Great Gurren Gang can't believe they're really going past the sky, but hey, says Dayakka, Simon's drill really is going to take them straight through the heavens. Leeron is the only one worried about Lordgenome's last words, though. Once it's all over, s/he'll have to go through the ruins of Teppelin in search of a clue.

Ranka's paying a visit to Sheryl in San Fran, but her time off is getting increasingly precious; Eida's taking a break, and she, Ranka, is getting flooded with offers as a result. She asks how Sheryl's feeling, and Sheryl's sure she can make it to the show by next week.

Ranka's been invited to the show as wel, by Grace, who also asked her to see her personally for something important. Sheryl guesses that Grace is trying to take her for herself. See, Grace and Sheryl came to the Frontier on tour from the Galaxy, but since it was just the two of them that got warped, Grace may well intend to start up her own operation. Ranka's free to refuse the offer, of course, but Sheryl doesn't want to talk about that right now. She'd be glad if Ranka could come to the show, though!

Then Ribbons walks in and knocks out Ranka. He quickly does the same to Sheryl, quipping that he hates stubborn women.

He accuses Grace of having been able to carry this out herself. She doesn't deny it, but says she needed this to look like a break-in. That doesn't tell him why she asked for Ribbons by name.

Grace says she can't believe a cute, smart boy like Ribbons is working for a man like Alejandro; Ribbons says he owes the other man. Grace knows what a man he is; it was her who introduced him to the President's aide. She's been a big help to his master, and that's why he's helping her in return.

His next task is to get the girl to point XY 2039 - near that Vajra hive. Not to kill them, oh no - "they're my precious princesses." Quite the opposite - she's sending them with a guard. Though if she's right, the Vajra won't kill them - "one of them, at least. The other is an imitation."

It's not time for her to reveal what that means - not to him or us. "When the world is in your grasp," though, she smirks.

Gaioh doesn't seem to be coming back, and Carlos is curious about Cheval's burning loyalty to a man who destroyed his world. And the Archsabres, too, for all they're worth, given Margie's current state.

"Dame Marguerite," Cheval growls. Ooh, Carlos didn't expect him to take her side. Quite a change from his ruthless lectures, isn't it?

Shioni sends him away, still growling like a dog, on her authority as the acting commander of the Imperium in Gaioh's and Ime's absence. Then she rounds on Carlos and orders him to loving bow in penance or she'll execute him. "The Imperium no longer needs you."

That was the Dark Continent! Next, we'll double back and spend a few chapters in space, fighting Zuul - and the dark WILL on the Moon.

I sure hope I can finish this before Z3 comes out!

Z2.1 in general is pretty punishing if you don't upgrade your units and spend your PP, but it is not until Lord Genome that it really hurts. The same attacks that deal about 5k damage to Lord Genome at the beginning will deal under 1k once his Will goes up. Nia and the Nirvash are extremely useful here, because they have huge SP banks and can cast Daunt to keep Lord Genome's Will down.

This is a really fun stage, much like the last one, and even though I generally like the space routes more this time it just pales in comparison to what we just saw. The only important crossover action we got was between Lord Genome and Gaioh and it was more on the nuanced side of exposition, but it is still pretty neat stuff.

Now for the last route split of the game!

Rather unfortunate that the game couldn't render how that fight actually ends, wherein Simon stabs him to death with what are effectively his car keys. Also Lazengann basically eats a Giga Drill Break. Simon only gets to blame himself for not saying "Finishing Move!" when he does it, though.

It is not exactly the same. In the show the number is far, far, far lower than ten billion to compensate for the fact that it takes place in an apocalyptic hellhole instead of a thriving modern world sealed off by bullshit.

Yeah, I'm kinda disappointed that you didn't get to fight Teppelin itself. Oh well... Also yeah, while SRW makes a lot of things in a lot of shows cooler/better, I definitely think that you can't beat the knock-down drag-out brawl of Lagann v. There's a lot up in space for Crowe to be worried about : those moon creatures, the Gishin, and the Vajra. We can't exactly deal with the Imperium with all of that, as Traia says, literally hanging over our heads. Refer to the other Chapter 42 for Traia's and Esther's business.

Team D and the CBF are back to Dragon's Hive, and blow past Tanaka to get some answers out of F. S. About those creatures from the moon, and why F. S. once said they're among the enemies Dancouga Nova exists to fight. F. S. says he won't tell them, though.

Kurara points a gun at his head.

The more experienced CBF tell her to back off. She'll never crack F. S. that way, and Ryo can tell that Tanaka will get to her faster than she can pull the trigger. (Tanaka gives his usual grin and says it's just his job as team manager.)

Johnny asks if he can at least tell them about the R-Daigun. F. S. just says that they'll find out eventually, and not too long from now, at that. "That moment will mark the beginning of a great trial for this planet."

This game finally recognizes a good exit line when it writes one!

Anyway, F. S. certainly made it clear he doesn't intend to tell us anything whether we threaten or beg. If we want to know, we'll just have to wait for the time he vaguely hinted at - the beginning of the "great trial." Shinobu's not too worried for the planet, though. "This rock's already in the middle of a hell of a trial." Aoi agrees - "Honestly, what's left for us to be scared of?"

Johnny's still determined to find out the truth about the Daigun - about Eida Rossa - and if F. S. won't tell him, he'll just ask Eida himself the next time they meet. Ru promises she'll look into it as well.

Loran and Harry also have something to ask of Ru and Seimi: whatever information they can dig out of Dragon's Hive on an individual, a woman - someone important to ZEUTH, and also very much to them personally. Their world's Moon Queen, Diana Soleil. They believe she may have been warped to this universe at the same time they did. Kira asks the same about a woman named Lacus Clyne. "Was she your lover, Kira?" asks Ru tactlessly. "She's close to me," replies Kira, smiling beatifically.

Seimi asks ZEUTH to just put together a list of all the people they want them to go looking for.

The Gran Knights aren't too worried about Sandman, though, nor the Elements about Fudo Gen. Wherever they are, they are without a doubt taking care of themselves. Anyway, any member of ZEUTH who hasn't been found after all this time probably hasn't come over at all. For now, they'd rather focus on what they know they have to do: take care of this universe's bad guys.

The bogey alarm sounds - a Gishin strike squad is approaching Dragon's Hive!

Chapter 42: To Space, Together
(Space route)

Despite it being the Gishin, it's Aoi who's first out the hatch - she says she's too curious about Dragon's Hive to let it get wrecked.

...
This is no time to be depressed, Takeru.
Marin, do you think I can put aside my hatred while I fight?
Takeru...
I promised my mom I would fight for peace.
But if I see Rose's face, I think I'll lose myself in hatred.
...there's only one thing I can tell you.
If we can't put aside our hatred and sorrow, we as a world have no future.
Marin...
I learned that in my own bitter battles. I don't want you to make the same mistake.
Thank you, Marin. I'll... I'll try.
But if I do get consumed by my own hatred...
Then...
Then I'll exile myself from this planet... since I won't have the right to defend it.
...fine. But don't jump the gun.
He's right. If that happens, we'll be here to pull you back.
Yeah! Even if we have to do it by force!
That's enough briefing! Here they come!

Looks like Rose herself is in charge of the squadron - and she says she'll get revenge on Mars for Marg! The other GOONZ aren't buying that as anything but denial, though.

Well, we only have to beat the map in five turns, and the only current goal is to shoot down Rose. (Aoi is listed as a key unit, but Takeru isn't, because if Takeru ever gets shot down, of course, the game is over regardless of whether it's his chapter or not.)

F. S. and Tanaka are watching the skirmishes. "A battle between humans born on different worlds," mutters F. S. "A battle born of hatred... It's likely to arrive."

WILL is silent. "Yes," says F. S., "humans are foolish. But humans can overcome their own foolishness."

Meanwhile, something new is approaching at high speed.

Eida is no longer hiding her identity, but it's not going to stop her from carrying out "her duty as pilot of the R-Daigun." At least this time, that means she's on our side.

Anyway, it's turn 2, Rose refuses to move, and she's all the way over here. Blech.

The R-Daigun is meant to defend the Earth!
Now that Dancouga Nova has fulfilled its purpose, I can fight with Johnny!

First shot against Rose comes from an Infinity Punch. Let's see if that's enough to get her off her seat.

Finally.

Rose! You don't have to obey Zuul to save Rui!
This is not about my sister!
Why can't you see there are people who care about you?
I left my home behind! Along with my heart!

What are you fighting for? What kind of life is it to just do what Zuul commands?
What would a mere Earthling know?
I... am not from Earth!
What?!
I'm from a planet called S-1 in an entirely different universe from this one!
Then why are you fighting to defend this planet?
I'm not fighting for this planet! I'm fighting because I believe it's the right thing to do!
The right...
If you truly believe with all your heart that Zuul is right, I won't argue... but if you don't, then stop this fight!
Silence! I... I...!

Okay, let's skip to the end for serious.

I'm here for one reason: to destroy you, Mars!
(Rose is fighting out of hatred. If I respond in kind, I'll lose myself...)
(No... the anger... the hatred in me is growing...)
Prepare yourself, Mars!
This... this is for Marg!

Rose drops a Propellant Tank (strangely anticlimactic at this stage), but refuses to yield. She's prepared to give up her own life to avenge Marg! She owes him her life!

Takeru is still willing to fight if Rose is, but Marin asks if that'll make Marg happy - and that stops both of them. Takeru himself said that his brother's fight was one of peace, and even after Zuul took Marg's heart, he remembered his love for his brother. Zuul's the one that made the brothers fight. This is all his fault.

Rose says she won't hear them speak ill of the Emperor, but it's obvious she's not doing a good job of suppressing her emotions. Suddenly, she deflates and asks Mars to finish her off.

Go away...
What?
I don't care where you go. Just go before I change my mind!
Mars...

Rose takes her men and leaves, and GOONZ knows what Takeru felt from Rose all along: that what she really wanted was death. What frightens Takeru was that he was really about to kill her. But he didn't. He stopped himself and broke the cycle of revenge. That's what really counts.

For just a moment, Crowe wonders if he'll regret that decision. But that's not for him to decide unless she really does come back.

Oh, and we have more bogeys incoming from above - and their trajectory puts them as coming from the moon.

Dragon's Hive is surrounded and taking fire. Suddenly, a voice (Norio Wakamoto's voice, to be precise) resounds from somewhere far far away.

Earth WILLllll! Can you hear me, Earth WILLllll?
Earth WILLllllll! There's still time! Do as I saaaaay!
Moon WILL. My apologies, but I will never erase this planet's life.
This world has potential.
Very well. Then I will erase you and execute in your place! Farewell, Earth WILLllllll!
You...
Won't get away with that!

Team D and Eida dive for the base, but they can't make it through the wall of fire. Those moon robots are trying to destroy us this time! Team D is heavily damaged, but they refuse to back down.

Very good, Aoi.
F. S.! You're alive!
We're here too, you know.
You think a little thing like this would kill us?
I didn't think this would be enough to rattle you.
Now stand, Dancouga Nova! And R-Daigun!
Show us your power!

(And does Aoi seriously still have Prevail level 3? Whoops.)

We are, nonetheless, thoroughly surrounded.

Oh. That one's actually just the same. And these Regulus Alphas are going to be a huge pain.

Strategy: pull everyone together, let the Regulus chase us. Also, plant Dancouga Nova (with Guard) to bait enemies for counterattacks. It still has all the attacks it used to and then some.

For some reason, after the first turn, Allelujah's getting a headache. Wait...

Tieria recognizes the GN particles those machines are emitting immediately. Looks like we've met the UNF's new mecha. Soma says they must have found Celestial Being's base, but Sergei reminds her that now is not the time. "These soldiers are of GOONZ, the special aid forces of the World Peacekeeping Council. They are our comrades."

Quattro and Amuro can feel the pressure between Soma and Allelujah - it reminds them of the Psycommu. Either way, we'll take the help if they're offering it.

This is their new solar furnace prototype, the GN-X (pronounced "jinx," because what else). It's outfitted with GN weaponry.

I don't like these enemies one bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWGben2f63Y

Assholes.

Let's go from the left and cut that down to a more manageable...

Ten.

And stop ignoring Nova, you jerks.

The GN-X. It is a finer machine than I could have imagined.
If the elites of all nations could use this mech, we may find world peace yet.
GOONZ. And Celestial Being! Behold our power and burn it into your minds!

It clearly isn't that good...

Nova is ripping up moonbots, but not hard enough and it's a serious drain on the energy.

Luckily, it's easier for the entire rest of the team to take on their pack. Even the Ptolemaios lands some kills, with Lichty learning Panic. (The more of those we have around, the better.)

So it's the last turn, and we're down to a third of the original Regulus strike force.

Nova's positioned to get backup from the rest of GOONZ. The GN-Xs aren't so lucky.

Luckily, the GOONZ manage to free Dancouga without it having to do anything at all.

(One of Celestial Being's soldiers is reacting to my brain waves.)
(Who is he? And why does my chest hurt?)

Of course the super soldier can outfight Sergei.

There's one more thing of Max God's I should show, courtesy of Assail.

And some serious energy guzzling. Jeez. I swear I was just using the Sword and ammo attacks except that one time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlNyNUkbjl0

Yep. That was it. At least now we know those moon machines and the Dragon's Hive are connected somehow, and even F. S. can't keep stonewalling us.

Sergei leaves, his job done, but Allelujah can't get Soma Pieris out of his mind - nor Tieria the UN's solar furnace mechs.

To a man, GOONZ confronts F. S. for answers. F. S. admits the time has come. First, there's someone he'd like us to meet:

Vladimir?! F. S. introduces her as an ally of his, Eida adds that she's the one who gave her the R-Daigun and her orders, and Tanaka reveals that they were married.

What was that second thing? Vladimir says she only built the R-Daigun as her sponsor ordered it, and had it work with the Trinities at that sponsor's request. That means she knows who was behind the Trinities: Laguna Harvey, chariman of the Linear Train Corporation. Was being the key word: we already know Harvey passed away not long ago, and Vladimir informs GOONZ that he was assassinated at the behest of the Trinities' true master. Of course, she never bothered to find out who that was. All she ever needed from Harvey was his funding and intel.

But Tieria glares. She did work with the Trinities, didn't she? Vladimir accepts full and total responsibility for Eida's actions, but Lockon says the R-Daigun is none of their business. But if it goes together with Dancouga Nova, what for? Why are the two designed to be more than their sum? Is it the enemy - and is that enemy "Moon WILL"?

F. S. says that the answers will come from someone else: the one who snatched the CBF from their "red universe," developed Dancouga Nova and the R-Daigun from Final Dancouga's technology, and handed the plans to F. S. and Vladimir: another WILL, "Earth WILL." (The CBF didn't realize WILL brought them here, but apparently, it was a series of fortunate coincidences.)

We know WILL, though - once introduced to us as the computer system of the Dragon's Hive. That's not entirely wrong. WILL is a sentient machine intelligence, a being of pure mind which merely inhabits a machine. This is what he calls his true form, projected to us through his limited dimensional powers. He is, of course, the one who hacked Veda, though it's now locked so tight even he can't get to it.

WILL says that he was previously captured by the super-dimensional being Muge Zolbatos; once the CBF defeated Muge, he was free. He did warp them from that dimension, though it was beyond his powers to choose where they would go. There are many others of his kind in many other parallel universes. In fact, that's an entirely other story.

In planet far from Earth, in another plane of existence, and far in the distant past, a battle took place between two civilizations. The battle destroyed both, as well as their entire star system, countless other civilizations, and ultimately, space itself. (Dimensional collapse is not an unknown phenomenon to ZEUTH.) The intelligences that survived appointed themselves guardians of the universe and left their ruined dimension to spread across the existences. WILL was one of those, and Muge Zolbatos, another entity with power over the dimensions, captured him hoping to learn of his home universe's fate.

What does he mean by "guardians of the universe," though? WILL says that it's the nature of organisms to try to survive regardless of the fate of other creatures, and this becomes a threat to the universe when those instincts are armed with weaponry. The WILLs exist to prevent this from happening. They protect worlds as they are born, as they evolve, and finally as they go extinct.

It was this WILL that found its way to Earth and found creatures who reproduce rapidly, try to rein energy beyond their ken, and above all, war. Their war will reach out into space, inevitably. Now, this doesn't mean WILL wants humanity extinct. He believes in us. Or rather, he has come to believe in us. In fact, Takeru embodies one of the reasons he changed his mind: a man from another world who learned the meaning of love, enough to forget his hatred and forgive. "That is what will bring harmony to the universe."

Enter Nova and Daigun: a chance given by WILL for humanity to fight against its own extinction. When WILL first came, he felt the danger of humanity, but also a glimmer of hope in Dancouga, the machine that struck down Muge Zolbatos. That's when he met F. S., and they struck a wager over whether or not humans could draw out the power of Dancouga, wild power, the power of the base instinct to survive. If they couldn't, Dancouga would carry out its duty as an ark, preserving the life of Earth through its destruction. But if they could, Dancouga would carry out its duty as a sword to protect the Earth from its destruction.

In all those words, there's one answer that hasn't come out: protect it from what? As you've probably guessed, there's another WILL on Earth, or more precisely, on the Moon - another one that was once in Muge Zolbatos' clutches. Like him, the Moon WILL chose to give humanity a chance, but it seems he's run out of patience - because of the Imperium. Humans have again arrogantly tried to seize power beyond their ability, and it crushed the other WILL's hope. He is sending his forces, the white robots from the moon, to end humanity.

However, F. S. won the bet with our WILL. Humans have drawn out Dancouga's full power, and now is their chance to fight for their survival.

That's it. F. S. says that's the whole truth. It boils down to this for Team D: humanity is up to a trial, all right, and it's up to them to take it on. They're headed to the moon! To a hellish moon, probably, but it'll be worth it to keep Hell from reaching Earth. No worries - worries just suppress the wild instincts that they'll need, and they brushed them aside long ago. Jeffrey and Sumeragi agree, and call on GOONZ to prepare for space operations within twelve hours.

Just one thing about that, though: the owner of the S. M. S., Richard Birler, has sent over space combat equipment for the VF-25s. It must be the new Super Packs. The squad's been waiting for them, and Alto's pretty sure he can handle his.

That's the humanity that everyone on the Dragon's Hive has faith in.

Also, once again SRW manages to do what the proper series didn't: actually connect Dancouga with Dancouga Nova. While they had done so before by saying that Nova was based on the original Dancouga, there was no actual plot connection. Now there is. Good job, Banpresto.

On the other hand, MAXGOD is still as stupid here as it was in Nova. If they had that powerful of a mode avaliable since the beginning of the series, what was the point of awakening God Beast? It's not even usable in MAXGOD!

Hmm, well...this IS the sequel thread so I can't really argument against posting details of Z1's plot; still, Z2.1 barely went into details regarding the previous plot so, if anything, I'd request that you refrain from going too deeply into the original story.

I said before that Dancouga Nova made more sense with Caphi's translation than with the show's actual subs. Now that they've crossed it over with the original (and with a little bit of Godmars and Gundam 00 in there) it is pretty much superior to the show itself. This is cool.

Mind you, using your 'ark' as a 'sword' is still a really stupid idea, but it does work kinda sorta under anime logic.

The only SRW I've played that isn't OG related is J. Dancougar is kinda hilarious there, even if its plot importance is non-existant. By the end of the game you can use its finisher at like 17-18 range through the use of spirits (accael, assail and snipe), it has Three pilots with Valour, two of whom also have sprirt (the +10 will one), plus it has a skill that gives it +25% damage at 120 will or more, which stacks with valour.

Sure its defence isn't the greatest, but its offence really redeems it for me, unlike Combattler and Voltes, for whom I can't get over the issue of 'super type mobility, real type armour'.

e: this actually bugs me about Dancouga Nova. There's nothing in the plot or writing or anything suggesting Aoi is special among the team, and if anything they try to play it as a balanced ensemble piece (certainly in the game), but Aoi still gets weird, out-of-place snatches of spotlight because she's the head.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.
Eh, I always thought it just meant she was more hot-blooded than the others.

I liked her yell, too. :(
