I bought and watched the first DVD of that set, where they interview Yuji Naka at the end. Apparently, he was big into PC games when he was younger, and the concept of a holiday-themed demo like "Christmas Lemmings" left a huge impression on him. And now you know the rest of the story.

I've heard that the MSX version of Woody Poko is better than the Famicom version, but I haven't played either one so I wouldn't know. Hopefully it's either good enough or bad enough that we'll want to see Arino stick it out all the way to the end.

Yo thread, I been meaning to get my girlfriend into Game Center CX as well. She really likes Japanese culture and video games and anime and is a huge greasy nerd like me so I think she'd like it. Problem is, what episode do I use to introduce her to it? While I love the show I feel like some episodes are a bit hit and miss and they run quite long so I don't want to risk scaring her off from it. My favorite episodes are all two-parters but because they run a bit long I was thinking of showing her a single one part episode instead. I'd like it to have one of those segments where he goes to visit an arcade because those are my favorite and I think she would like that a lot. I'd also want it to be an episode with AD Nakayama because he's loving adorable I can't stand it. Any suggestions for good episodes for a first timer?

I can't remember if Nakayama is in it, but Go by Train. Just don't be upset if she leaves you because she falls in love with Abe.

I'd say try the earlier travel specials. I thought the one up north was great, where he's playing Super Mario Bros 3 (I think) and going to a spa.

A friend asked me for episodes to introduce a bunch of people to the show. I came up with Go By Train, Takeshi's Castle, Paris Dakar Rally Special, PaRappa, Pilotwings. I figured that was a good mix of stuff we never saw in the west, kusoge, a couple you're likely to be familiar with, staff interaction, and some good old Arino suffering. Maybe throw in a trip episode (Northern trip is my favorite) and another familiar game (Battletoads? I just looked again and its a two-parter, so maybe hold onto that a bit).

I always say Adventure Island is the best episode to start with. Features a well-known difficult and unfair game, it's an early episode so you don't miss any in-jokes, and it gives a good example of what the ADs do (explains how to do things, buys food for Arino on a whim, slaves over a Famicom for 28 hours just to clear it for him). Kan posted pics from the GCCX Cafe that just opened: Abe and his ramen pizza. Reminder: he turns 50 years old this year. The drink concocted by Arino and pork cutlet rice bowl by Watanabe. Some art by some nerd.
