There is a link to a years-old thread. If you don't have an SC account, you'll want to sign up and email the OP. It is under the 9-3SS subforum, afair.

What's up with the parking break pads on 95's? Both mine (both 2000's, one aero one not) will lock up / engage when driving if you've even looked at the parking break-leaver while it's cold outside.

Girlfriend just called me and said she couldn't drive faster than 40km/h because something sounded weird from the rear of the car. She said she stopped the car and couldn't find anything strange (tires/engine etc).

I know it did the same for me when i drove to work sometime in December, i, like the idiot i am, pulled the parking break when i stopped for gas and when i drove out of there it sounded/felt like i had a flat / something clunking from the rear. I stopped and started again and everything was fine until i reached 50-60km/h when it started again.

I told her to just back up a few meters and then drive on again, that helped. I know she hasn't dared to use the parking break since I've told her not to do it when it's freezing outside..

I have one complete set to restore them for one of the cars but the guys at the shop told me the ones on the Aero was just fine, so i bet they both are.

And you thought they were cute and cuddly.

Took apart the hood cowling again to try and solve the rattle coming from my new blower motor and to replace the 3 broken windshield clips. The wipers were still a pain to get off, even with the anti seize, however it required much less effort than before.

I shop vac'd the area and got a bunch of debris out. However the rattle is worse now so I need to pull the drat motor out again and clean/inspect the area. I'm guessing there is some sort of debris contacting the fan cage.

Also pumped out my old PS fluid and replaced it. I'm hoping to do an oil change and ATF drain\change this week pending the weather. In addition I'm hoping to replace my thermostat, coolant bypass valve, and drain/flush the coolant.

It sounds like you're having all the fun. It is below freezing here - and has been for at least the last three days. I am really missing my heated seats right now.

I'm must bringing back abused SIDs from the dead. Well - mostly.

I brought back all of them pixels, but can't fix the cracked up LCD that wasn't mentioned, nor noticeable before arrival. It throws the 'low washer fluid' code every time so I have a trace to check. What the hell - it gives me something to do.

There is one hell of a markup if you can find a cheap vendor for it. They're going for :10bux: on eBay.. a piece. Best I've found with a bulk volume is still just shy of half that. It is one of those 'oh hey no problem I can do this, I'm a man...wait gently caress I gotta solder to glass? Uh, shi.. *clicks buy refurb unit for over :10bux:2*, never mentions it again. If you can actually see the traces for the LCD, it's no big deal.

There's even a niche BETWEEN those two markets, where you can buy the LCD with cable attached for about :10bux: x 7. That way the real "nasty" work is already done for you.

SID1 issues are now two decades old, and SID2 issues existed right up through 2005. Its not quite as niche when its basically every drat car for 20 years. :v:

Changed the oil and ATF today. Also tore apart the hood cowling and discovered the source of my rattle. I apparently hadn't secured the cabin fan cover completely, this in turn caused the fan assembly to be somewhat loose in the housing. Derp.

Tried to drop my sump again but I'm still stuck with that stupid seized turbo stud. I might just take it to a specialist to either A) drop the sump/replace oil pickup or just B) replace the turbo studs so I can drop the sump myself.

If they'll let you mess around in the garage at all, I say 'B'. I don't trust many people to tell me "yeah its not really clogged at all". Uh huh.

Getting progressively better at SID fixin'. Got it down to about an hour total, because my 40w iron gets that bar warm just about as fast as an incandescent would. I am OCD as hell at getting that ribbon aligned perfectly, and adding additional weight to the PCB and LCD beyond that dumb rubber band idea.

The side rearview mirrors are starting to turn gray/purple at the bottom of the glass, about the bottom 1" is affected so far.
I assume this is corrosion or something.
How hard is it to switch out mirrors, in the event I can find a set that is not affected by this corrosion/contamination?

Anyone interested in SID clocks?

I'm considering figuring out the temp and setting that so you can get date/time/temp. Not sure about activating/setting up anything else, but if there is sufficient desire.

Right now, they'd probably cost about $50/ea for source, pixel fixin' and a 12v wall-wart. Would likely setup a 12v rechargeable supply as backup/unswitched battery. :v:

Welp, I guess just me. v:q:v

Update:

The SAAB gods took pity on me tonight. We've had 80+mph gusts for several hours. I went out and saw the project cars' cover shredded. I was rather annoyed, but then when I went to disconnect what was left, I happened to notice some rather odd movement. Wait, did I just do acid or is the fence wobbling? Well, it wasn't the former.

Begrudgingly moved the car and put up some boards to brace the fence until I could work on it - hopefully with the aid of sunlight. No dice. Within the last couple hours there was enough force from the opposing side to throw it about 20' NW from where it was attached.

The whole front end would have been totaled. :ohdear:

I'm going to look at a 2003 9-3 with 120k on it this evening. Dude wants 3,900 for it, looks good, hopefully it doesn't drive like every other craigslist vehicle I've driven. I've not had to do a sludge fix on an engine yet, are they pretty straight forward? I'm anticipating it's sludged, because.. Craigslist.. I'm replacing my TDI commute box and since descent TDI's with low miles are 7,500 in these parts, I'll just drive a 9-3 for a few years to offset fuel cost from 40mpg down to 31mpg which is still pretty drat good.

Is it the 9-3SS? If so, I'd avoid it even if it wasn't sludgy, because they're notorious for electrical issues. Never dealt with a B205 with sludge issues, despite having owned several "sludgers". The B235E was pretty straightforward to degunk.

How are the post 2004 Saabs? I understand they're a frankenstein of GM things but the Ecotec seems like a good engine and the Epsilon a good platform. Are they good handlers? Reliable? I'm cross shopping E46 BMWs, GTI's and some others.

That looks nice, but I'm burnt out on looking at private party vehicles. I drove nothing but turds the last few weeks from private parties. In CA, all cars sold at a dealership come with a 1 month 1000 mile warranty from date of purchase in case anything goes wrong that didn't happen on the test drive.

They're pretty drat reliable, the only issue is the sludging issue associated with the 2.0t's from 1999-2004 which was handled as a factory recall. All Saab's are pretty much GM frankenstein's from 99 forward. That said, parts are generally easy to find and cheap as well. After owning a BMW then a Saab, I'd take a Saab all day long. Reliable, cheap, easy to work on and I would say year for year even better features on the higher end models.

They're actually quite nice, despite squeaky loving plastic interiors. The 2.8T is a bitchwhore to work on, I think they physically built the car around it. The 4 bangers are allright. I'd go for a 9-5 over a 9-3 because I love the B235.

You're looking for a cheap(ish) SAAB in 2014. Keep that in mind. If you didn't have CARB to deal with, I'd scout you one here, but if it wasn't CARB emissions already - fergeddit.

This is quite true, but I'll have an additional tool this afternoon. I'll be able to live view and bid here: http://www.adesa.com/GoldenGate

I'll probably be able to find and buy the same thing that would be 4k for $1,500. Dealers typically shy away from Saab's these days.

I've been shopping the 04+ 4 bangers mainly because I know the Ecotec is actually a very good engine. The idea of a quirky 2.8 V6 GM engine with a turbo is scary so I've stayed away.

The GM Epsilon platform is the question mark for me. I know the previous generation Saab 9-3's suffered from being based on a rubbery platform that resulted in some lovely handling. Are the Epsilon based Saab's good in the handling department? What goes wrong typically?

I dunno, really. Its kind of hard to be objective when the only one I've stuck with for more than a rental/loaner is a lower-than-usual XWD.

I still prefer the B2xx series over the GM - there isn't a lot of rhyme or reason beyond "its what I know". :v:

I have a 2010 9-3 (auto) and it’s been fun to drive, nice handling, no issues so far. I got it in 2012 with 14k miles or so, have since added about 20k. I’m not sure what typically goes wrong with this generation…what I’ve noticed is mostly random electrical quirks. The front windows like to go down when they should go up, unless the car is moving over 30 mph or so. Also had a few random sensor warnings that appeared once and then never resurfaced.

Overall, I’m very happy with the car considering the price and the fun I have driving it. My main complaint is that some of the interior components, including stereo, etc., are dated and plastic-y. It’d be nice to have an iPod connector or something that doesn’t remind me of a mid-2000s GM rental car.

Also have a 2000 9-3 (manual) that’s had its fair share of quirks. I always feel like the 2000 handles “heavier” than the 2010, if that makes any sense. Feels big and bulky while the 2010 is smooth. I enjoy the shifting and zooming around, though, so I love both of my Saabs equally. :)

I just thought I might also interject since we're in platform chat: From '98 to '10, the 9-5 was on the same GM2900 platform. There was a hell of a lot of difference in feel from first gen to the (second half-assed) facelift in '06. You lose quite a bit of room with all of the new additions, and you lose weather band, which is UNACCEPTABLE. <>

Let me put it this way: The 3.0t is highly regarded as an answer to a question only GM asked. Yeah, god forbid you SHOW someone a 4 banger is good enough to the not-your-audience. Look, we have a V6, just like Toyota! Just like Nissan. Just like.. nevermind. Nah, lets do an OK V6 with a turbo hung off one side. You'll eventually have to replace the oil cooler. The owner will usually go to a poo poo mechanic and end up replacing their radiator. It won't loving help. Last I recall it was about 12 hours bookable for that job.

Don't feel too bad. I ran into saw a 2001 3.0t in pristine condition that I still regret not sticking a business card on, in.. 2008ish.
