In my experience, mosh pits at hardcore shows are terrible. Hardcore dancers throwing punches and spin-kicks everywhere are just embarrassing and they really don't give a poo poo if you don't want to participate. Most metal crowds are chiller about it.

Working on the venue security side of things, I have to say that this is pretty much spot on. Hardcore pits are the absolute worst to deal with, mainly because of the pathetic spectacle it all becomes.

Nice air kick, bro.

edit: stoner metal shows have always been a treat to work.

Quoted for truth. The last time I saw Yob, Mike hopped down into the crowd after the show and bullshitted with everyone for an hour or so. I would go to doom shows just to hang out with people because everyone is unusually friendly and laid back.

Any goons going to desertfest in London? I've been considering it ever since kvelertak were announced but Boris were just announced as the Sunday headliners so I sort of feel like it has to happen...

EDIT - I already know about the Lion's Daughter Indian Blanket album

If you like that stuff you'd probably like Rome. They're not exactly doomy, but they are miserable as all hell, and one of my favourites in that style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyZhcvvcXFU

Boris is an awesome headliner for Desertfest, I should really go one year. It sucks that Kvelertak are in the Ballroom, they come across a lot better in smaller venues, without a barrier.

Current 93's Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain is doomy, but it also doesn't sound like neofolk at all.

I think they're commonly considered alt-country but they're always worth recommendation, as is DEE's current project Woven Hand in which he has explored more folky sounds

I'm glad someone's bringing up neofolk. Been getting really into that genre lately. I'm not entirely sure I would list Comus as neofolk, though.

The new Current 93 album, I Am The Last of All The Field That Fell, is surprisingly doomy for an album that boasts Nick Cave and John Zorn among its ranks. Also, one of the guys from Comus.

Thanks for this thread. I haven't kept up with this stuff in a few years, even though it is my favorite genre(s), so it is cool to find out what is new with some bands I like (Toner Low and Truckfighters) and find some new ones to enjoy like Windhand and Sandrider.

16 horsepower is not neo-folk, as neofolk has a pretty well established sound and aesthetic. neofolk is, like most genres, completely arbitrary.

I like this description from an article I just came across googling Monolord.
"Remember that time you drove your battered old VW out into the woods, took an unfeasible amount of peyote and listened to nothing but Sleep, Ufomammut and YOB for four days straight? No? Well, this record is going to trigger one hell of a flashback, in that case…"

Though I don't know if I'd go that far yet, but I really dig the sound they have. I'm going to have to get that album when it releases.

Edit: You can download the mp3 from the Easy Rider website http://www.easyriderrecords.com/2013/12/08/monolord-signs-easyrider-records/

Some friends and I started a band not too long ago and we record all of our jams, if anyone wants to give a listen to this and give feedback that'd be rad. No vocals at the moment, writing the music first. This is one of the first songs we've got under our belts so it might be a bit rough around the edges, but I'm thinking I oughtta post it anyway because someone might get a kick out of it.

Influences: Black Debbath, Black Mastiff, Atomic Bitchwax, Monster Magnet, Church of Misery, Fu Manchu, Clutch, etc. :buddy:

I just discovered Candlemass - I've always avoided them, since I don't remember any of their music from the 80s, but I remember their videos being terrible. I finally actually listened to "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", and I can't stop listening to it. "Solitude" is exactly what I've always imagined doom metal to be. I found it on Youtube, and don't want to be a mooch, so I'm going to probably buy it at some point, but what is the general consensus on Candlemass? Are their other albums this good?

"Solitude" also seems easy to play along with on a bass tuned to D... or maybe I'm so awful I just *think* I sound good. :backtowork:

I haven't been able to keep this song out of my head since it's been posted. I like the atmosphere and the lyrics seem really weird but strangely poetic. Problem is, I understand only like half of it, which really bugs me in such a minimalist song. Could a native speaker help me figure out the lyrics? Here's what I got:

I want to puke a pitch black rainbow of bile and ???
up to the sun to put it out
93 billion miles
???
will vomit forth, spilling out, spewing out
to black the sun
come from me, come from me
bitter black and ???
rise to the ???
give to us, give to us
darkened days and ???
down the heat, down the heat
???
