I thought you folks in here might appreciate my band. We're a Scottish Electro-Indie 4-piece called 'The Duke, Detroit'. We're signed to a local indie label and put a single out in September. Playing more shows now and gonna put some tracks out later in the year including this one: 'Dangerous'. There's a few other tracks on the Soundcloud - would love to hear what you guys think. Going for that dancey live band sound.

Lots of hype surrounding the release of this new Monogrenade album in Montréal. Check them out if you enjoy impressionistic synth pop, the cello, the French horn or the French language. http://monogrenade.bandcamp.com/album/composite

Nicole Atkins released her new album today. She released it on her own label via Pledgemusic. I think it's better than her first. Pastemagazine put up a soundcloud stream of it. Rock, Country, Disco, Folk, a little organ here and there, and she has an amazing voice. My favorites are What Do You Know and Gasoline Bride. http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/av/2014/01/album-stream-nicole-atkins---slow-phaser.html Also here she is performing 'Girl You Look Amazing' live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvvtWp38RS0

A third song from St Vincent's upcoming album, "Prince Johnny", is now available for download (if you've preordered on iTunes). Also, while the other songs are greyed out, you actually can sample them (again, on itunes).

Here it is, for anyone to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idllxjHbX7w drat am I excited for this album. In the meantime, Sun Kil Moon's new album Benji has been getting mass hype, and it is well-deserved. Never heard an album that was so brutally honest, it sacrifices nothing and instead depicts the reality of life and death in all its forms. This is a less depressing song from it, "Ben's My Friend": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHH-pAYaMEI

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks released their new album Wig Out at Jagbags recently and this song is great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYC5JASqWnI ceo came out with Wonderland this month. It's really trippy electronic pop music and honestly I get a little creeped out listening to this song Mirage. Something about the looping voice sample makes me uncomfortable, but the song itself is good? I don't know it's weird. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnPxOUjmhyM Gardens & Villa first album was a really great piece. Some of the songs from the 1st: Black Hills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcNUFOlynPI Thorn Castles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c08shGEv8Kk. I haven't gotten a chance yet to listen to the entirety of the new album but Colony Glen feels a lot more upfront and energetic compared to their previous work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNfERGRTw8c A friend gave me a heads up on Bibio. This song from his The Green EP is beautiful. It's got this distant melancholy that reminds me a lot of Low Roar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTjlmzbGcXU I heard Drowners on Sirius XMU's Download 15. Great upbeat rock. I feel like they're a better The So So Glos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuFYXj5k8ug Here's an electronic track to mix it up a bit called Mr. Wonderful from Saint Pepsi. Terrible name, great song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh6tw8i8k2I. I've been listening to this almost non-stop.

Shriek, Wye Oak's follow-up to to 2011's Civilian (AV Club's #1 album that year; one of my favorite LPs in recent history) is out April 29. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1UUqrGn2B0 — "The Tower" A departure from their earlier work – Jenn Wasner has said in interviews that she's largely traded in her guitar for keys. A bit St. Vincent-y, but I like it a lot. They're out touring this spring, too.

Sorry to quote from two weeks ago but I was gonna say if you like half of Making Mirrors, you'll like half of Like Drawing Blood. My favorite song of his is The Only Thing I Know from that album. I hate everything I've heard from his side project The Basics, but I get the feeling that it's intended to be very different from his solo work. Keep in mind that his entire catalog is up on youtube, and some of his videos are really impressive.

It's incredible and also features what I'm sure is a David Byrne inspired dance from Annie at the beginning. It's going to be hard waiting on this album for the next two weeks.

Jesus Christ. I'm listening to Sun Kil Moon's Benji for the first time and it's so depressing Previously my only SKM experience was his Modest Mouse cover album Tiny Cities, which made a lot of the songs it contained sound a lot more bleak and brooding than the originals did. And I never had any experience with Red House Painters, so this is the first time I'm hearing any of his original material, and it seems like the same applies to his originals. This album is full of truth and vivid imagery but most of it just feels so unforgiving. Those living, those dying, having sex, developing friendships, relationships with family members...it covers a lot of bases and even some minutiae about those themes, but most of them seem to end so horribly. Like there's barely any happiness anywhere to be found in anything. If I ever feel like killing myself, this is probably the album I'll put on. I want to say it's a good album. It's well done for sure. I just don't think I'll be able to listen to it very often at all because of the subject matter.

When I listened to it in the store, I found it incredibly touching immediately, though I do think he sounds simply incredibly broken. They are still beautiful songs, and who knows, it might add up to a whole suicide playlist. It's hauntingly beautiful, but nothing I'd just randomly listen to. Still worth it though if you like (for lack of a better word here) Sun Kil Moon's songs (their "Carry Me Ohio" kind of kills me a little bit each time). It seems like his last few albums are just a couple cool riffs with him basically doing a spoken word number over it. Fortunately his lyrics are interesting enough that he can pull it off, but the days of him writing songs like the first two tracks on Ghosts of the Great Highway seem long gone. Also... even by Kozelek's standards, the lyrics to Dogs are a bit too goddamn much. I don't see that one getting a great deal of replay. jeffLebowski fucked around with this message at 17:50 on Feb 11, 2014 |
