Mostly the latter, but I guess a little of the former when you realize that poo poo like that actually made it into tie-in fiction targeted at teens. Wasn't just some author projecting their fetishes, an editor had to look at that and give it the okay too.

Episode 3 was on the telly again on Saturday, and I have to say it's a much more enjoyable watch after having read SMG's variety of points raised with regards to the myriad of symbolic elements and other nuances. One element I'd never considered before was Obi-Wan's story, and the battles he finds himself in.

We start off with him and Anakin blasting shooting robots in space in futuristic battleships, surrounded by a support crew of clone warriors, and eventually battling their way through a much larger spaceship to rescue the Emperor. For the first half of the film, we get the supposedly cautious-but-wise master role as seen in the previous two films, but this is conflicted by his repeatedly smug and cocky attitudes towards his enemies, almost entirely consisting of robots. Without being able to articulate fully, the element of enemy robots is fairly important, as they act as some sort of iffy loophole for the Jedi to practice swinging their lightsabres as happily as Larry, without the consequences of having to worry about being reckless towards others, all the while in the name of preaching peace. Kind of like how early 1990s cartoon shows did the same thing, or how enemies in video games aren't real people, which may also be coupled with aforementioned space battles or that enormous wailing lizard chase sequence that precedes Obi-Wan killing General Grevious in the middle of the film.

Then there's General Grevious himself, who's self is deliberately vague, with a robot shell coupled with lizard-like eyes and active organs under the shell; SMG suggested that the Emperor teases Anakin about the live-giving possibilities of the dark side, possibly explaining Grevious' deformed state (and definitely defining Darth Vader's black outer shell). As Obi-Wan's ridiculous fight comes to a close, he is left with no other option than to shoot Grevious in the exposed heart to kill him, wherein we see him shoot the stage boss in the big glowing weak point, from which he explodes into flames and ends with Obi-Wan making a casual quip like loving James Bond.

Short version: much of Obi-Wan's plot and actions are like that of a video game in Episode 3, coupled with Jedi loopholes.

In Episode IV, Obi-Wan should've just tried flicking some of the switches on Vader's chest. One of them was surely an "OFF" switch.

Eh, the new version is poo poo for the reason kiimo mentioned - in the original, it seems that the sandpeople are scared of the robed figure - because you do not gently caress with creepy old Jedi hermits who live in the desert.

Now it seems they are only scared of him because of his bitchin' James Brown impression. Owwwww!

The point was always that Obiwan uses his voice as a weapon. ("I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.")

The joke in the SE is that it changes from Obiwan using his knowledge of the local people (note his observations about how sandpeople walk single file, and so-forth) to Obiwan using some kind of ridiculous Force Shout™ superpower.

The worst thing about the special editions is that for every stupid change they make, they miss out ten continuity errors or screw up special effects.

In the "despecialized" version the scene has way too much contrast and looks over saturated.

Star Wars to me is an ancient VHS recording with Dutch subtitles on a single Sony tape - non-native widescreen, but probably 16:9. I should check whether that tape still works (it did 6-7 years ago, when it was about 20 years old). Probably watched it (the trilogy on that tape) more than a dozen times as small kid. Sony made some good VHS tapes.

He's not been roaming the desert swinging a lightsaber about and building his rep as a certified badass. The sand people have nothing to fear from him by his own design.

That was straight from the heart. I always wondered why my dad didn't like me changing and choosing the tapes myself - I was 3 or 4 when I started using the VCR on my own - I figured he was a control freak (he is). One night as a teenager I randomly decided to go through the tapes labeled as "Entertainment". Nothing but early 90s MTV music videos, oh and a few with porno on their tail ends, as they apparently weren't properly overwritten.

I think you're letting cynicism guide this interpretation. Why can't the roar of an alien desert monster be a strange rising whoop? Why can't Obiwan have learned to mimick that? It doesn't have to be a Force power. There is nothing in the film to indicate that it is.

E: Not directed to you, obviously, but I find the argument that the change is bad because it corrects one's initial misinterpretation of the scene incredibly poor. The scene is not built on ambiguity, so there's nothing wrong with clarifying the action.
