It is pretty different from their previous material as you can tell by the sample. Album stays that slow to mid-tempo pace throughout. Seems to be a bit polarizing at the moment, with people either loving it, or disliking it specifically because it isn't fast, and doesn't contain a single blastbeat at all. On the other hand, I can't think of much else like this, so I feel like they finally found a good niche for the Kriegsmaschine sound, to really differentiate it from Mgla.

Yeah I am well up for something slow and midtempo. The sample still sounded pretty much like a war machine, so it's all good with me. I'm listening to Haxan by CdG, never really got into Henbane like everyone else seemed to, but this is pretty great.

And yeah, CoF were on before Behemoth.

HOW does The Satanist have so many good, catchy songs on it? The album sounds vital, their live show at the moment feels vital, it's brilliant to see them on such good form. I don't think I've seen a big metal album get such deserved universal acclaim for a while.

So 1349 and Behemoth are playing in Worcester, MA in April, I'm really excited to see them. Does anyone know if Goatwhore will be playing with them? I've heard Cradle of Filth is playing but I'm not sure if Goatwhore is either.

Also how are 1349 live? They're probably my favorite black metal band so I'm wicked excited to see them. Behemoth will be amazing too.

Says they still are, but it's part of NEMHF which frankly is utter garbage. Kind of would of liked to see Behemoth after this new album.

Something I've noticed in interviews and public appearances is that Nergal seems really happy. It's the kiss of death for comedians and some songwriters, but his embrace of life after beating cancer really seems to have made his creative side come alive. There are a lot more overt "rock" influences evident as well which makes this probably the hookiest album they've ever done.

In possibly (un)related news, Nergal is a judge on Poland's The Voice. I don't know what's weirder: Nergal appearing on The Voice or the creators of The Voice (and, by extension, the Polish public at large) finding it totally normal for a black metal musician to be a voice judge.

Nergal hasn't been on the show since being removed in 2011 (Season 1). More time to worship Satan and perform REAL music I suppose.

“Polands’s State TV has announced that they have removed Behemoth frontman Nergal, aka Adam Darski, from it’s talent show, The Voice Of Poland, after much pressure from the Catholic Church, claining that they will not replace him with another ‘death metal rock star.’

UPDATE: This Kriegsmaschine album rules. Other opinions are wrong. Absolutely crushing. It's nice to have more black metal that is actually heavy, not just raw. And if this is the niche they're going for to distinguish themselves from Mgła, I'm all for it. Really impressed with this, but I always like the slower bits in albums best anyway. Also, I've seen this said elsewhere a lot, but I'm just going to repeat it here: Oh my god the drumming on this record. War drums. This totally makes up for the disappointment I felt with the Avichi record (not that they're that similar, but I reckon this is the first great BM album of the year, at least in the "orthodox" style.)

The Avichi record I'm pretty mixed on right now. Some of it sounds great, but some of it seems off. The synth in Lightweaver for instance comes across so forced. I get he was going for something different, but I think he went a little too far. Also good lord the album cover art is atrocious. The Devil's Fractal had such great cover art too.

Amazing what taking a band for their music can do, and not some misguided sense of kvltness. Then again your response is how I viewed all the earlier Amon Amarth discussion in the main thread.

Behemoth is one of the most produced, plastic sounding black metal bands I've ever heard and the new album doesn't break that trend with me. I truly don't get the circle jerk over this new album at all.

What blackened death metal was clearly missing was tons of vocal overdubs, riffs stolen from Nile, and using "ov" instead of "of" because it's more brutal

Honestly, they've been repeating themselves since Thelema.6 or even earlier, and if anything the new album just has more catchy choruses and marketing going on. I thought the No Clean Singing editorial where the guy essentially whined about "elitist kvltists" calling Behemoth pop-metal was pretty telling. NCS is normally one of the better big metal blogs but that was a really silly article.

Yeah seriously, who cares how kvlt it is - if you like the music, cool, if you don't, go listen to something you do like.

I mean, unless we're talking about Merzbow or some Japanese shitnoise band like The Gerogerigegege, it's hard to call an album like The Satanist objectively bad.

Edit-- Most people are just expressing their opinion, yes, but who cares what Nergal does in his free time or if the band is promoted in Hot Topic or whatever.

Excuse me, I regularly listen to Merzbow and the Gerogerigegege for pleasure. Don't talk poo poo.

I couldn't care less about cvlt status or whatever (I enjoy Boris and Isis, which would get me kicked off NWN and ANUS, and that's to say nothing of all the metalcore and slam death I listen to), I just think Behemoth releases are pretty redundant and don't really do anything with the combination of black and death metal that other bands (Imprecation, for instance) don't do better. This latest one is their best in a long time, though. I think we all agree on that.

I wouldn't really classify Behemoth as a "black metal" for the last 15+ years. The new album kicks much rear end and isn't nearly as over produced as the majority of poo poo out today.

Billy Gould from Faith No More having thrown in with these guys at some point was amusing to learn too.
