My dad was in a band 30 some years ago. They had big things in NME, John Peel sessions, and a pretty intense following. They reformed a few years back and have been gigging around Europe and Japan. The band is The Pop Group: Mark Stewart, Gareth Sager, Bruce Smith and my dad, Dan Catsis. The music falls into the category of "Post Punk" but I figured it belonged here more than anywhere else. With fellas like Nick Cave and Keith Levene as fans, and some glowing reviews recently, I thought I'd share (and I wasn't in the mood to create a "My Dad's band is better than your dad's band" thread). http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jan/19/the-pop-group-sexual-objects-review http://www.scotsman.com/what-s-on/music/celtic-connections-review-the-pop-group-glasgow-1-3274398 http://glasswerk.co.uk/magazine/review/10695/The+Pop+Group/ i am harry fucked around with this message at 17:03 on Feb 14, 2014 |

I was at a Defeater show the other day that featured the following: -a post-rock support band -no stagediving -folk songs -the singer walking with a cane wearing a flatcap -an encore What a bizarre experience, basically the complete opposite to when I last saw them a few years ago, ha.

They've been touring with Caspian, right? I imagine that's a great double bill either way. And Derek has some hip problem.

Ya I know, that's why stagediving wasn't allowed. He's in dire need of a hip operation and they were worried somebody might accidentally knock him over. It just contributed to the rather un-hardcore feel of the show.

Iselia (screamo band from North Carolina) put their new album up on Bandcamp for streaming and they have improved a bunch. Some of the vocals are super heavy, like they belong in a post-metal/atmospheric sludge band. http://iselia.bandcamp.com/album/ii-dawn Also have any Michigoons/Midwesterners been paying attention to the BLED Fest line-up? They've been announcing one band per day as part of a free ticket contest all month, and it's really promising so far. I'm sold just on Bane, Old Gray, The Saddest Landscape and the Menzingers. I'm sure a bunch of you would be into seeing Title Fight and Self Defense Family as well. http://bledfest.tumblr.com/lineup EDIT: They just announced Hawthorne Heights as headliners playing their debut all the way through. I like it but that's because I'm the hugest fanboy ever in the world. Their first track they released was definitely better but I'm so pumped for this new album I'll take whatever I can get.

It sounds alright, but I want to see live performances before I make a judgment. I saw them four times since On the Impossible Past came out, and they got progressively worse each time. And that was a span of April 2012 to January 2013.

Really? That sucks. I'm seeing them in Melbourne with the Smith Street Band next month. Really looking forward to it. I saw them support Bad Religion a couple of years ago and I enjoyed them a lot, but I was drunk enough that I wouldn't have even noticed if they were terrible.

I saw them 2 nights in a row and I asked them to play Sun Hotel on the second night because they didn't on the first, which they did. I think the new single is great. Also have a new Jungbluth track to make your day better: http://jungbluth.bandcamp.com/album/split-w-callow If you're not listening to Jungbluth you definitely should be because Part Ache was one of the best albums of last year. Heavy and aggressive but with massive melodic moments too.

The Menzingers are still well worth seeing, don't get me wrong. I just felt they lost a little going to a bigger label and were focusing mostly on that. OTIP is still a solid album, but it was frustrating having some dude just yell "play obituaries god dammit" after every song. I'm spoiled from seeking them a bunch of times when they were first starting, but there seemed like too many times they would have tempo issues or just being off in recent shows. They also completely ignored their first album and a good chunk of their second, so hopefully they give a wide performance for you.

I saw Deafheaven play with Between the Buried and Me the other night. I love Deafheaven's "Sunbather" album and have listened to that album dozens of times since it first came out, and I thought their set was really great. In the intervening days, something's kind of dawned by me- I was kind of creeped out by the singer. Dude was dressed all in black and wore black leather fetish gloves, and at one point, after giving at least 10 people in the clamoring crowd high fives, he licked his loving fingers. As their set was ending, he dove off the stage and let the crowd carry him around on his back, at one point stretching his arms out in a kind of "Jesus on the cross" pose. Don't get me wrong- I still love their music and will definitely see them again the next time they come to town, but I feel like I saw a hardcore show choreographed by Leni Riefenstahl. Between the Buried and Me was great, though. I had to duck out before their encore, but the crowd went absolutely nuts when they played "Selkies" and the vibe just continued to build as they hit the final breakdown.
