Previously on RuPaul's Drag Race...

"I need to get up in this gig, girl..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7drlrSFeMs

And in the end, the winner was...

Jinkx Monsoon. :woop: Long may she reign.

Yes, the show is finally back. No All-Stars, no Drag U, and a poor excuse for a Season One replay later and we need some fabulousness to perk us up this dark February. Mama Ru is going to lead us into the light!

RuPaul's Drag Race is a competitive reality show where Drag Queen compete in a series of challenges to prove that they have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to be crowned the Next Drag Superstar and win a lot of money. The girls complete in a mini-challenge that usually gives the winner(s) some kind of advantage in the main challenge, which can be anything from building costumes to acting to putting straight men in drag, and then there is a runway show. After talking with the judges, two queens are placed in the Bottom Two and they battle it out in the Lip Sync For Your Life :nyd:. The loser of the LSFYL goes home, and the winner of the challenge may or may not have immunity.

I know that it sounds like standard fare so far, but this show is just a joy to watch. The important thing to keep in mind is that most of these people are professional Drag Queens. They know how to speak, they know how to perform, they know how to put on a show, and at this point they should know exactly what they have to gain from appearing on the program. Sure, it would be nice to win $100K (or more?) but the real benefit to being on the show is the exposure.

Each of these queens knows that simply being on RPDR is a huge career opportunity. The longer they are on the show, the more we get to know them. The more we know them, the more likely they'll get booked to do shows. If you are prepared and savvy enough (Willam, Detox, Jinkx, etc.) the sky is the limit. These aren't 18-year-olds thinking that Tyra is going to make them a supermodel or decently singing twinks who are going to get chewed up and spit out by the industry, it takes real balls to be a Drag Queen so don't cry for them Argentina and just enjoy.

We're likely to see the following:
- At least one singing challenge
- Group choreography
- Dress construction
- The Snatch Game, a take off of the classic TV show Match Game
- The Library is Open, whereupon the queens read each other to filth
- Acting challenges
- Makeup challenges
- Makeovers for non-drag queens
- Hot guys in underwear
- Etc.

NEW THIS YEAR: THEY MADE THE GIRLS PROVE THEY HAVE A SNATCH GAME CHARACTER!!! :woop: I can't tell you how much I hated those queens who had no clue. You got a pass in Season Two, hunites, but NO MORE.

RuPaul's Drag Race Untucked usually comes on after the main show to feature conversations between the Queens as they await the results of the judging. Personally, I don't care for it but I get the appeal.

The Judges

RuPaul Charles

The leader of the merry bunch, we thank Ru for coming up with this tasty weekly confection that is RuPaul's Drag Race. What else is there to say?

Okay, let's be real. The winner of the show is picked by Ru. The person who is kicked off each week is picked by Ru. This is Ru's baby. It exists to give glory to Ru and help sell her albums (now on iTunes). You thought it was bad to ignore Tim Gunn? DON'T IGNORE RU.

Michelle Visage

(That picture is everything forever.)

Every once in a while I remember that Michelle wasn't an original judge on the show and I have to pause and collect my wits.

Michelle has been friends with RuPaul forever. She co-hosted with Ru on her VH1 talkshow, has been a more than welcome addition to the judging panel since the third season, and is the one who really goes on the road with the queens to help push the brand. She's fabulous, and I can't wait to see how big her breasts are this year.

Santino Rice

Ugh. Why is he still on the show? Count on him to cut someone down in a horrible manner and for Twitter and Tumblr to get all up in a tizzy.

The Pit Crew

Eye candy, props, set movers... you call them and they'll show up in their skivvies.

There will also be a lot of special guest judges and extra special guest judges. They include Neil Patrick Harris, Paula Abdul, Heather McDonald, Bob Mackie, Adam Lambert, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. Expect the regular cast of characters (MATHU ANDERSEN!!!) to appear at some point as well.

Notable Queens from past seasons (work in progress):

Willam Belli and DWV

Willam Belli is this thread's spirit animal. She first appeared in Season Four, kicked rear end, and then got kicked off for... reasons. Right when she got kicked off, she seized the moment and released the song "Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A)" with fellow Queens Detox Icunt and Vicky Vox. Their group has eventually become known as DWV, and they travel around the world performing their songs. When Detox was released from last season, they released the sublime "Boy is a Bottom". Other songs released by DWV include (assume all of them are NSFW):

- Silicone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH0eSyII8aw
- Blurred Bynes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr51afj7eJY
- That Christmas Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aFazmEOptg

Willam has also released solo songs and collaborations with other queens, notably the fabulous "Let's Have A Kai Kai" with Rhea Litré.

Last year, one of the best things ever happened. Willam started doing a weekly The Soup-style web show called Willam's Beatdown. Something happened, the show ended, and Willam can't use the name. He's promising the return of Billam's Wheatdown (for legal reasons) this year. There have been some slice-of-life videos of DWV on the road under this label, hopefully we'll get back to her reading to filth soon.

She's also the reason we say "...goddamit" all the time. Just watch. She's amazing, and it kills me that I've never seen her live.

More to come...

In the end, this show is all about fun and acceptance. Just relax and enjoy the ride. If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love anybody else?

So you can watch most of the premiere on the logo website now.

Lost it when ViVacious made her entrance.

The split premiere is a good idea. I feel like I got a good taste of each queen (which was bland).

Everyone's runway look sucked save for Ben. Maybe this group is mostly duds? I wanted to see some fierce GoT poo poo and we got nothing. Ru should just axe all of them except for Ben and move onto the next group of 7.

I don't know if I like the two premieres.

Adore's face was good, but she looked busted as hell in that getup.

Ben is going to eventually have to show her vulnerability. That act will not last long.

April and Adam are like peas in a pod. Peas having lots of sex

Everyone else was super bland.

I hope ViVacious kicks Kelly's rear end to kingdom come. Hopefully King's Landing.

I hope we get to see Gia evolve. Girl has some geisha realness.

I think I forgot about Laganja, but i'm sure she's a contender. That girl knows how to work her bodyodyody.

Apr 28, 2009

Laganja was one of my early picks but she seems super-tense and selfconscious, not exactly a chip off the old block.

I love the contrast between Ben's drag persona and mellow, chilled-out dudeself. Also Ben is kind of freakishly smart, probably one of the smartest queens we've ever had on this show. I just love Ben.

April is already great TV, and made the most of a bad job in that main challenge. Impressive.

Please please please stick around, mama Vi.

There are a lot of really cute boys this season, kind of nice after s5's cavalcade of yikes.

Aug 24, 2009

Judging from the preview this may be the season of the annoying characters. Ben, Laganja, and Adore need to tone it way down. Ben is obviously clever but his entrance (along with just about everybody else's) was almost intolerable. I'm dreading the amount of Adore and her stupid bitchy facial expressions we're going to have to endure. Kelly Mantle was the most likable contestant to me so obviously she's probably getting kicked off pronto.

Did anybody else think Laganja's boy look was the fiercest thing in the whole episode?

I like the new pit crew members, always nice to have more eye candy even if one of them is A Bottom :allears:

Gia is so very catty. I love it but the way she talks makes her sound so dumb. Either way i love looking at her.

I have to say I was expecting a lot more polish from most of these girls. Hopefully the next episode will have more of that.
Basically all this episode did was make me wish I could see the rest of the season even more... so good job I guess :haw:

This show completely flew under my radar until a friend sat me down and forced me to marathon Season 4 and now I'm clawing at myself waiting for the full episode to air.

I hope Milk is bananas crazy in a Tammie Brown way and she's got the Ivy Winters even-prettier-out-of-drag vibe goin' on.

And I do hope Vivacious wins the Lipsync. She's dead serious about her work and I want to see more of that attitude. And that walk. More of that walk.

Too fat to wear pink.

I hope Vivacious wins too. I like her approach to drag much more than Kelly's and I will not cheer for someone who talks smack about Willam.

Other than Ben De La Creme, I didn't see anything truly impressive. Honestly, I don't like the cattiness:talent ratio in this batch of queens. The only one who was sweet was Ben and she made the best dress of the group. The other ones just seemed mean, but not witty.

Man, I kinda wish I had held out for the full episode in a few days, but dang it, I had a poo poo week, so I'm watchin' me some queens, dangit.

I actually like the split premier thing. I know I always had an issue of remembering who's who when it's all 12-14 at ones, so I think this will help get names cemented.

I REALLY like April so far. Her opening look stunned me, and she really pulled off the challenge look more than I thought she would.

Also sad it's down to Vivacious and Kelly. I like them both, but I'm rooting for Vi.

Agree with this, April was really impressive, funny, and poised, especially for a 23 year old.

and yeah, I'm rooting for Vi, too. Kelly did not impress me as much as she did in her intro video, and her looks were pretty blah. Although was that a Hedwig wig I clocked?

Also I just rewatched Paris is Burning this week since we were talking about it in the old thread, and Goddamn do I love me a ballroom queen :allears:. And that swerve to her runway walk. It's great to see a representative from the oldschool New York scene reppin' it. I thought Vi's look was fine, at least on par with Laganja's, who I agree is also trying a little too hard personality-wise.

I'm liking Gia Gunn a lot more than I thought I would, although she's still a bit annoying, especially since they seem to love her in the talking head interviews. Ben is talented, funny, intelligent, and sweet, to boot. Looking forward to her. Adore is a bit of a brat, but she's funny, so it evens out. Ben, Vi, and April are definitely my favorites of this bunch.

I can't wait to see next week's, I'm really excited about Milk, Darienne, and Courtney. I wonder if it'll be the same challenge, a similar one with different shows, or something completely different.

I had a thought about the elimination, I didn't catch the end of the critique because my wireless cut out so they might have addressed how it'll work, but what if they do a little tournament-style elimination, where the two losers of this week's and next week's have another lip sync to determine who's the first to go? I dunno if I like the idea that two queens will be eliminated before they even meet the full cast, for some reason. Plus, more LSFYL's are never a bad thing.

I do love the format of the split premier, though, seeing more of each queen is really nice.

curiousTerminal

The split premier thing was a great idea. instead of 30 seconds of runway look we got the full time spent on each one, and the episode doesn't have to be an hour and a half long to do it.

I shamelessly love Adore. I don't know what it is about her, but I cannot get mad even when she's being a brat. Ben is clearly going to go far, at least top 5 possibly top 3. Kelly didn't really impress me, Vivacious is amazing and the rest of them kinda flew under the radar for me.

My internet is being totally lovely right now, so it took me two hours to watch the episode. Ugh. This better not be a thing.

But I persevered! And it was worth it!
  • Adore is a brat, but I can't hate (yet); she's got spunk, and she's could prove to have some genuinely funny, smart-rear end moments like Willam or Detox. She does seem like someone who can suck all the air out of the room. But if she brings the drama to Untucked, that's cool too.

  • Holy poo poo, you guys, I'm crushing on Ben SO HARD! He is hot out of drag, and his voice is even hotter! From the moment he introduced himself I was drooling. And he seems like he'll be a lot of fun and a really good sport.

  • Gia can go. She is loving fierce as all get out (and wow, she can perform), but I feel like she has no skills beyond looking fierce. She also has a mannered cadence that is already wearing super thin. I'm with Adam Lambert, I just don't like her.

  • I don't have any real bead on the others yet, other than I was disappointed that Kelly didn't bring it harder and I'm really hoping for a Laganja/Gia LSFYL because that would be tremendous (Laganja was right: those legs are everything).

And a bunch of Ben DeLaCreme vids because I'm obsessed:
