BonoMan posted:Just discovered Volcano Choir. Bon Iver/Vernon's sorta pre-Bon Iver still kinda side project. Gonna have to say it's straight up better than most Bon Iver stuff. Really good. I think it's better, but I'm slightly biased because of the following reason wherein I not-quite-namedrop like mad: I'm acquainted with the Collections of Colonies of Bees dudes (and once played a 24-hour-long web-streamed experimental music jam thing with one of them, pretty sure I shortened my life by several years that day), and I'm acquainted with a woman who was (is?) dating Justin Vernon for a while.

I don't know what their plans are release-wise since I only heard of them a couple days ago but I hope they release at least an EP or some more singles soon... I don't know why I don't get more recommendations from musicians I like! Sea Oleena also posted this on her tumblr: Yumi Zouma's debut EP on Cascine. It's apparently on iTunes and you can buy the 10" vinyl from the label directly if you live in the US or Canada but unfortunately international orders outside of Canada are sold out. Sinewy, sultry pop music is the best.

I went to a little local show last week featuring Emilie Mover and Megan Bonnell, and I really liked Megan Bonnell. She just released her first album Hunt and Chase. The title track has been stuck in my head since the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEdVLf6OkIY

As much as I loved Broken Social Scene, Kevin Drew's songwriting was never one of its strong suits; that song is ... yeesh.

Yeah I'm not feeling that song too much but not all of Kevin Drew's solo material is bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okRiv-RvSPs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtdnaDwEKSs It's kind of samey, but if you're a fan of BSS then he definitely has at least a few tracks you're bound to like.

So the new St. Vincent album is floating around out there, and holy gently caress is it good. Pretty much every song is brilliant, and so completely unique. Will definitely be blasting this on repeat for a while. It gets better every time. drat.

The song "50 Words for Snow" by Kate Bush is so weird. It's not bad, but it's weird and not as good as the previous two songs on the album, "Wild Man" and "Snowed in At Wheeler Street". Yes I'm late on just about everything. Except the new St. Vincent...

Her voice is so expressive.

Yeah, I totally have a crush on her voice that I've been nursing for months since I found out about her while high one night browsing Bandcamp tags, haha... I'd love to find more music that sounds like hers but I've not been very successful in this way. Considering her love of Drake, it'd be interesting to hear her attempt some hip-hop features as well, which I think she would be more than fit to do and would probably enjoy as well!

echoing the St. Vincent sentiments. first album of hers (theirs?) that i've listened to despite having read about them for a long time, i really love it! fantastic album, immediately catchy and every song is a hit for me. i'm currently working my way backwards through their discography and have been pleasantly surprised by how different every album is

Yep, I also really dig the new St. Vincent. I still kinda prefer her older style (like Marry Me and Actor), but this album is pretty great nonetheless.

I really enjoy this recorded performance by Julia Holter, who I didn't know anything about before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWRsC8FMULM It seems quirky but somehow weirdly catchy at the same time. I also think she might be high... That aside, I really like her voice and the slightly odd combination of instruments works for me. Now to figure out whether I have time (and money) to go see her in July...

They somehow seem more coherent that way. Not that it takes anything away from them!

Duck Rodgers posted:Does anyone know Royal Canoe? They're a relatively new band from Winnipeg that's been touring a ton the last couple years. They released they're first full length "Today We're Believers" last year and they're going to be doing a North American tour with Bombay bicycle Club this spring. Hard to describe their sound but its a lot of fun. I'm over a month late, but thanks for posting this. Today We're Believers is one of my new favorite albums now...so many solid tracks. A good friend of mine named Johnny Delaware released an album last year and he's been working on music videos for a few of the tracks. Here's the most recent video for one of his best songs, Saralinah. I'm very partial because I like Johnny and used to live with him, but I'm about 99% sure I'd like his album even if I didn't know him personally. If you dig it, you can find his first album Secret Wave on Spotify or, even better, you can buy it from his website, https://www.johnnydelaware.com. There are also videos to a few more of his songs on Youtube.

We have a National thread, a Radiohead thread and a classical thread, but for the sake of visibility: Stream of "St. Carolyn by the Sea / Suite from 'There Will Be Blood'" by Bryce Dessner/Jonny Greenwood quote:In addition to working with their respective bands, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and the National's Bryce Dessner both compose classical music. On March 3, a split release from Dessner and Greenwood will be out through Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Classics. It compiles three orchestral works by Dessner with a suite from Greenwood's soundtrack for There Will Be Blood. That's the art, above. Watch the trailer below. It's kind of wonderful.
