Infinity Gauntlet is like my favourite superhero comic ever, and I couldn't get through War/Crusade. They're just boring. The Thanos mini is decent, but not hugely memorable. It does set up some Annihilation stuff, though, so go for it if you feel like it.

I recently starting getting back into the various Marvel X-books for the first time since '97 or thereabout, and I've gotten some good pointers on some of the other titles, but was wondering specifically about where a good place to start with Excalibur might be/if there are any exceptional runs to check out. On a different note entirely, I've really been enjoying Terry Moore's Rachel Rising. Are there any other good character-driven occult/horror series out there? e: I already read Hellboy/BPRD, just to get that out of the way. There are five Excalibur Classic trades which collect the entire Claremont run but some of them (especially the second one, I think) can be hard to get hold of. I thought it was okay, but I think it was at the point where Claremont was starting to slip (if he hadn't already). Probably not essential, I guess. Alan Davis coming back on the book definitely helped to reinvigorate it.

Hey as someone who's just getting back into comics and hasn't really checked anything out since he was ten, what are the really good Marvel series that don't have too much continuity going on? I just checked out the first issue of Moon Knight and Magneto, and I'm interested in what else I might follow. Something that has relatively few issues would be good so I can start from the beginning.

A new Ghost Rider starts soon, which looks pretty boss. Jason Aaron's Thor run is a bit further in, but man, is it awesome.

I'm loving She-Hulk by my man Charles Soule. That's only two issues old. e: Ms Marvel #1 was kinda neat too. That's just about to get a second issue. This ain't Marvel, but The Wake from Vertigo is on #6 out of just 10 issues. I really dug Invincible when it first came out and went on to read through the first compendium. Now I am halfway through the second and this series seems to have lost its luster. Does it continue to go downhill? I know it is a common comic book trope but it seems like Kirkman has some favorite villains and no matter how bad they get trashed they will be back within two story arcs. What started out pretty fun and violent now just tries to be more X treme each fight.

American Vampire is really good. There are some early stories by Stephen King that are kind of weak, but it's pretty smooth sailing after that.

Having taken a short break from reality, I recently read through all of Garth Ennis' The Boys and thoroughly enjoyed it, can anyone recommend me some other comics with the same kind of dark themes without being ULTRA XTREME VIOLENCE YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHH? I read through all of Kieron Gillen's Uber , and enjoyed that is well, if that helps cement what I'm looking for? The Boys was pretty typical of Ennis' stuff, although definitely some of his best. You might want to look into stuff like Preacher and Hitman

Manhattan Projects is dark and hilarious. It gets very gory, but it's perpetrated by (real life historic) dorky mad scientists, not roided muscle dudes. First issue is free on Comixology.

Bit of an odd request here; are there any comics from and/or about life in the Middle East? I've not read Persepolis, but I think that would be on the cusp of what I'm looking for. However, I'm looking for something with a twist - an element of sci-fi or alternate history or noir, maybe. Also, on a lark I bought the comixology SXSW bundle -- any recommendations of where to start with this gargantuan collection? Just so I'm not simply asking for a reading list, here are the last few comics I've read and really liked: King City - loved the "gently caress the plot, I'm going to draw stuff I feel like drawing" sensibility and just how vibrant and alive Graham made the city. Stumptown - I thought the artwork was subtly beautiful, and found the story and characters to be compelling and real. Reminded me of Twin Peaks, in the best way. Prophet - love most of the artwork (usually the issues Graham drew), and the concept behind it. Also Graham really has a knack for making his universes feel alive. East of West - blown away by the crispness of the artwork, love the notion of Death as the main character. Hopefully that gives some ideas of what I like.

I just started with The Bunker and The Mire, which were great. Too Much Coffee Man is a collection of a classic 90s strip, as I understand. Probably worth trying. I'm gonna try and read five a day and get through all of it. I dunno about something for the Middle East, but Grant Morrison did a three issue comic Vimanarama http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vimanarama which is a 'Jack Kirby-ish' take on Indian myths, starring a UK Muslim. I remember as a kid reading some of Dad's old collections of The Phantom and I've always had a little soft spot for the character just from the half-remembered nostalgia that provides. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start/good runs to look for? I don't know if I'm willing to take a shot from the beginning, that's one hell of a lot of comics.
