They were alright, but I think KEN mode stole the show despite being out of place. And Russian Circles' drummer live is jaw-dropping.

KEN mode's sets are usually really good too. Their new bassist is from my town, so that's cool.

They had a few technical problems (lovely patch cable when Jesse switched to bass for "No; I'm in Control," pedal issues), so it was amusing that even after some violently angry songs, they were Canadian enough for him to go "I'm sorry my pedals are poo poo tonight" at the end of the set.

Here are the setlists if anyone is curious or thinking of seeing this tour.

Russian Circles
309
Harper Lewis
1777
Geneva
Schiphol
Deficit
Carpe
Burial
Mladek
Youngblood

KEN mode
The Terror Pulse
Obeying the Iron Will
No; I'm in Control
The Romanticist
Counter Culture Complex
The Irate Jumbuck
Romeo Must Never Know

Inter Arma
Love Absolute
2000 Years
'sblood
Westward

I could've sworn they opened with the Survival Fires but I don't know them very well and I doubt they changed their set between the weekend and last night.

They opened with the Survival Fires when I saw them a couple weeks ago in Orlando, so it's probably on their setlist. They do have a tendency to tinker around with their songs in a live setting, so maybe it's a different version of Survival Fires?

Fine and dandy.

Heavily digging this, definitely going to buy the record once it's out. Was going to see them in April anyways since they're touring Europe, hope they're playing stuff from this album too.

Yeah the album is brilliant. Hopefully going to pick up a copy of the vinyl on tour because they have a very nice bright green tour exclusive. I enjoyed this album a whole lot more than Monnos, which I felt lost it's way after the 3rd or 4th track. They seem to have stuck to what they're good at here and it's really paid off. Impressed.

Can I get recs for more doom with really good rhythm sections (besides Sabbath and Sleep of course)? I've been listening to Reverend Bizarre all day and I want more songs like "The Wandering Jew" in my life (though not necessarily so long).

Good rhythm sections? I gotta give a shout-out to my boys in Haggatha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEZbO9Klu0M

Matt is one of the best drummers I've ever seen, in any genre. He also plays in Bison, and formerly Goatsblood and Pride Tiger.

Not doom bit Melvins and Kylesa are both bands with multiple drummers that make great use of rhythm sections.

Also agree with the person who said Russian Circles drummer is good live, saw them last year, incredible live show

Oh right, I forgot about Bongzilla. Magma is an incredibly talented drummer- his beats and fills are way, way beyond most of what you hear in the stoner/doom oeuvre.

I listened to it again just to be sure, and I still feel like it needs some vocals.

Plus, we're talking about rhythm sections here, and Bongzilla's drummer is a lot better than Bongripper's. The power and crispness of his tom rolls astonishes me every time.

This is truth. I don't think I've ever run into a better example of "this'd be great if they got a vocalist". I listened through it waaay back because of the low F tuning spectacle, and I don't think I've listened to it since. It just feels so empty. The music doesn't feel intricate enough to work as instrumental stuff.

It is the more difficult version of debating the best Goblin between Orange Goblin and Goblin Cock.

In this analogy, Nekrogoblikon plays the role of Cannabis Corpse by being out of genre.

Uh oh...

While I like both I'd have to agree with Bongzilla over Bongripper, but Bong is a definite contender also, Mana-Yood-Sushai is some great stuff in a more droney vein.

e: Just checked out Bong Goblin and while not my thing they actually aren't terrible. Despite the name and theme they aren't really typical stoner doom though, maybe a sort of thrashy sludge? http://bonggoblin420.bandcamp.com/

Well, Minotauro seems to have re-released a bunch of Paul Chain albums, so I went to their website and ordered a couple, and threw a couple other things into my basket - "The Last Neanderthal" bu Ogre, and "Time in Stone" by Sunrunner. I don't really want to listen to them before they get here, so they'll be totally new to me, but has anyone ever heard these two albums? How are they?

I recently started a Stoner Rock band with some buddies, been playing a ton all over my city and having a lot of fun. Trying to save money to record a big boy demo, but you all know how that goes.

Till then, I've recorded a pretty competent demo in our practice space. Would like feedback (positive or negative welcomed-- I'm not sensitive) from some goons.
