So this band Noire, sorta sounds like Orchid/Morningrise era Opeth mixed with hints of Storm of the Light's Bane era Dissection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTBevwgJnFU I'm impressed. I always wanted someone make some new music with that same sort of Morningrise vibe.

If you like them you'd probably like Miasthenia. There are a lot (and I mean a lot) of bands still going for that style, see also: Divine Symphony, Atra Vetosus. You should also really look into the Chinese/Mongolian/Non-Japanese Asian black metal scene right now. There are a lot of bands doing cool stuff in a melodic black metal with guitars and folk instruments style right now. Tengger Cavalry is the one that's big in the west right now (because they are loving rad). El Estrago Bonito fucked around with this message at 01:42 on Mar 9, 2014 |

http://warpstone.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-phantasmancer-celestial-castle Warpstone is a French band that sometimes sounds eerily like Spiral Generator/Focusing Blur-era Vintersorg. There's an occasional moment that'll bring to mind Dissection or even Opeth (90s era in both cases), or, in more modern terms, Black Dahlia Murder. Mostly though it's Vintersorg worship. I have no idea, however, why they front loaded the album with the two worst (and least Vintersorgy) songs. Things really pick up with the title track. I get the feeling this is one of those bands with two competing songwriters; their sound is really back and forth. Also seems they're trying to crowdfund a physical disc. http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/en/projects/warpstone-new-album-into-the-phantasmancer-celestial-castle I imagine a good deal of that is going to Paulo Girardi for this wicked thing: I have no affiliation with this band, I should add. I saw them mentioned somewhere online and now I can't remember where. It'll be funny if it was in this very thread. (I did a forum search, though, and nothing came up.)

HJB posted:I'm a little late on this, but any thoughts on Dream Theater's latest offering? Gave it a couple of spins this week and I feel like I'm missing something. It seems so bland and formulaic to the point where the band couldn't even be bothered to come up with a name for it. Mangini's drumming will take some getting used to as well - it sounds like he's hitting bags of flour. Their previous album grew on me so maybe this will too, but other than the first couple of tracks and the string & piano sections of the closer there doesn't seem like a lot to latch on to. I don't mind the new album, but the tone of the drums is absolute garbage. Quite possibly one of the worst sounding snares in DT history outside of Change of Seasons. On an unrelated topic, I just discovered Pagan's Mind and... I think they're amazing. Amazon MP3 had 4 of their albums combined for 8.99, couldn't pass it up. Sadly, I'm so out of the loop on music that stuff like this, that's been around forever, goes completely unnoticed until I stumble across it. What else am I missing out on?

You forgot Images and Words, which was produced by David Prater, the same guy who produced A Change of Seasons. Mike Portnoy claimed Prater liked really terrible drum triggers, and liked to force them on him. Images and Words is an amazing classic album but that balloon popping snare trigger... The production of Images and Words is really lovely in general and it's a shame they didn't put all the songs from that album on Live at the Marquee. Anyone who gives a poo poo about Dream Theater at all should listen to that live album, it's the best six tracks they ever recorded. E: There are so many things bad about that production. I have the "official bootleg" demos for I&W and in the rehearsal tracks (which admittedly are rough-sounding enough to be worthy of a black metal demo) there are a lot of details you can hear that got buried in the final studio mix. John Myung's bass does a lot of cool poo poo and in "Learning to Live" James does this harmony with the clean guitars in the middle that sounds really neat. You can hear the harmony in the final album if you listen very carefully, but it's all but buried.
