They only have two albums, and only Onset of Putrefaction approaches being worthwhile. There you go.

Yeah Necrophagist are sort of a one-trick pony in that they are all about the solos. Every song is just there as an excuse to have a long neoclassical solo. And the solos are cool, but it's just really dumb after a while. Definitely an approach to "tech death" that I can't get behind.

Woolie Wool posted:A bunch of arpeggiated jerking off with no riffs or hooks or anything beyond "hey this is fast" impresses you? Hey man, not everyone can speed up their sweep picking in ProTools. Speaking of fast stuff, Unspeakable Axe has put out some good thrash stuff recently. The Omnivore album is really solid, it's half an hour of Sepultura-worshipping death/thrash with enough mid-paced groovy parts and interludes to contrast it and make it feel really ripping fast, sorta like Merciless' "The Awakening" contrasts the fast sections, though Omnivore don't have the same reckless looseness when they play really fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsM7N2GbUSA Besieged are good too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRBD5_PkZvE

Modern thrash needs fewer tired Exodus/Slayer/Kreator/Sepultura knockoffs and more power-thrash--bands like Artillery, Toxik, Realm, Forbidden, etc. But then that would require them to actually know how to write songs and hire a real singer so why bother with that when you can just take the path of least resistance, right?

The clean vocals are tolerable by the melodeath barker needs cement poured into his mouth. EDIT: The more I hear of this the worse it gets. It's not power/thrash, it's Gothenburg/thrash and it sucks. Woolie Wool fucked around with this message at 03:35 on Mar 12, 2014 |

The best thrash band today is Vektor, whose most obvious influence is Voivod and who have a really weird vocalist. Speaking of which, any newer thrash bands that nail the tech-thrash sound? I really dig bands like Watchtower, Realm, Believer, Coroner, etc.

Henchman of Santa posted:The best thrash band today is Vektor, whose most obvious influence is Voivod and who have a really weird vocalist. Hexen are neat. Then there's Algebra and Exmortus (who have a neoclassical/power angle on their most recent album). A lot of people might also suggest Revocation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZryjGi9KLE Mekong Delta are still active, too. As for older stuff (which I'd suggest over the very small amount of modern tech-thrash), look into Deathrow - Deception Ignored, the sole Imperium, Calhoun Conquer, and Aspid albums, the first Sieges Even album, and the Hellwitch compilation, if you haven't. So I raided my local HMV's clearence section yesterday and it actually went pretty well. I picked up: Nevermore - Enemies of Reality Woods of Ypres - Woods 5 Moonsorrow - Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa Vektor - Outer Isolation Total sticker price 57 quid (no wonder I hardly shop there anymore) but after the clearence discount and some other random ones that applied for some reason, I paid 5.70. 90% off is not a bad deal at all. The Vektor album was my main target but hey cheap stuff is good. DroneRiff fucked around with this message at 20:48 on Mar 13, 2014 |

Trying to develop my death metal tastes some, so I come to you guys for recommendations. I enjoyed the new Artificial Brain record, but what I really like is Disma's album Towards the Megalith. I didn't go for Gorguts' latest too much, though it had some good songs. I'd like something not super technical, but still varied in tempos and stuff. Generally I'd prefer to listen to more recent stuff, but if there are some essential classics I'd be fine with that.

Disma is basically Incantation (with that band's vocalist, too!). So listen to anything Incantation's put out, as well as Funebrarum's two albums. I'd also highly suggest The Chasm - anything they've done from Deathcult for Eternity on is pretty fantastic, gloomy stuff. Also worth looking into anything on this RYM list (The Wakedead Gathering, Stargazer, Bolzer and Mitochondrion are especially neat) Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 22:03 on Mar 13, 2014 |

Bolzer is top tier poo poo, grave miasma, teitanblood, beyond (germany), obviously Incantation, obliteration, morbus chron, pseudogod, stargazer, and sacriphyx all come to mind as top notch death metal acts around right now I prefer my death on the old school and blackened side, the more technical and cleaner poo poo just doesn't do it for me. if you liked disma, all these should be good for you. edit: also i dunno if this is too entry level but autopsy are masters of that sound. kirkjames fucked around with this message at 01:42 on Mar 14, 2014 |
