That would be completely useless. If you actually needed to use footage to determine fault in most accidents chances are you would be stuck without the few seconds leading up to impact.

The clever ones always record, and when the accelerometer trips it flags some chunk of the history for permanent storage.

Obviously the problem at that point is keeping it powered, but I have seen solutions of that sort. I just can't name any right now. :v:

I think Pfox is more interested in it starting up to record if the car is struck while parked, in addition to typical dashcam functions.

This is exactly right. Both times I've been hit in a lot, my car was parked and unattended. What I'm looking for is a camera that would sense the shock of an impact, turn on, and hopefully catch the perpetrator's vehicle still touching mine, which ought to be enough to get insurance involved in a constructive manner.

You could get one of the ones with a g-sensor and leave them on all the time.

They would be recording all the time and looping over the old recordings, but when the g-sensor is triggered, that section of recording is marked and never deleted.

Not quite what you want, but would should work.

Some of the models have a motion detector in parking mode and only activate if it sees someone moving or the g sensor goes. Obviously it'd need to be a non-switched power outlet and maybe with rundown prevention to keep from killing the battery.

Seeing that car sitting at the lights with the reverse lights still on. you know exactly what's going to happen when the lights change.

And then it doesn't, but the driver still fucks up royally.

A few days ago, I picked up my Mobius Actioncam. My first noteworth video would have been recorded a few days ago, when I caught the fireworks of a branch getting too close to a power line. Would have been, anyway, because I had failed to properly insert my memory card.

But today, I got opportunity number two, shown below. It's worth noting that when my light turns green, the oncoming turning lane light is already red.

The Mobius is a fine camera, but it looks farther away than it actually was. But for that, you get a wider view of the world. If you're looking for a dash cam, consider this a recommendation for the mobius.

You shared it with a dick.

I know it's a dick move but I like to floor it and make those people jam on the brakes and block traffic, so they have to sit there in the intersection wallowing in their bad decision.

It's really bad in Colorado because there's like a half second delay between red and green, so if an rear end in a top hat comes through on a green you know their light was yellow before they even thought about approaching the line, and was red for long enough to justify whatever you can do.

In Illinois, if it causes an accident you can be cited for not letting them through. Basically if someone is in the intersection before you, they always have right of way, no matter what kind of stupidity brought them there.

(They'll probably get a ticket for running a red light too, so there's that.)

I thought the vid was gonna be about the first two cars through, which were pushing it obviously but eh... then the RAV4 came and yeah... that guy was just an rear end in a top hat.

Same thing, but only with cars that I'm not super protective of because they'd be totaled immediately if I scratched the paint. There's plenty of satisfaction to be had from a casual glance at their reaction after being stuck in the middle of an intersection and having no clear way out while everyone is staring at them in disbelief.

Picked up a G1W like in the first post off Amazon for $55/shipped. It arrived Friday. I was on my rear end in bed all Saturday birthing another loving kidney stone so I finally got to test it out for real today. On the way home from the LEGO store I encountered an E39 that decided my shiny white Abarth was invisible. He looked me right in the loving eye then tried to pull out in front of me. As for the video quality, I'm fairly impressed for a $50 camera. And I no longer need to remember to turn it on/off, it does its thing when I start/stop the car. I was previously using a GoPro Hero3 Black which is a drat fine camera but is really obvious thief bait hanging in the window. I wanted something more inconspicuous.

Good reflexes on you and your co-pilot there. You both saw it before I did.

And 50 bucks for the camera? Good deal. I'm curious though, how fast were you going there? Not that the BMW was in the right, but it looks like you were really moving. It's probably just because your camera is mounted lower to the ground.

Good luck with your piss rock.

Either the car in front of him was also hauling rear end, or he's just following traffic.

I have a dashcam and I'm in China. I can't really be bothered to post anything because it's all just so mundane at this point I barely notice. Imagine the above video happening approximately every 1/4 mile and at every single intersection.

My wife is also a 'spirited' driver in her R on occasion so we're always both paying pretty good attention to our surroundings. Especially on this fun and winding road. That intersection always seems to be an issue so we both kind of expected it. We really weren't going too fast. Limit there is 35, I was doing under 40. The wide angle always makes things look faster than they are. Kinda why they use wide angles for extreme sports. Gives a feeling of speed.

I was gaining on the slow car in front so I assume the BMW thought I was going the same speed and misjudged. Also, the Fiat is a small car. He could have just misjudged how far away we were by going off our size out of the corner of his eye. About half the cars turn up that street so he might have thought we were. My lack of expletives kind of supports that I believe it was an honest mistake. I always slow down for the hundred yards through there for this very reason. No harm, no foul.

Edit: here's the cam for $52 on Amazon. Free two day shipping with Prime. Its a more recent chipseted G1W. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GIDXG86/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for the updated testimonial about this particular G1W. I just picked it up along with a 32GB SD card (which was recommended upthread). After looking at the inner workings of the cam, there's almost no doubt in my mind it's running Linux, and probably a 3.0+ Kernel version. The base MMC stack of 2.6.32 has support for up to 64Gb.

128Gb cards are wired the same way, but the default filing system is exFat from the factory. FAT32 will work though just fine on them if you manually format it as FAT32. If the firmware isn't explicatly checking to make sure the card isn't over 64Gb (I am not sure why they would ever do this, that would be stupid), then use whatever card you want.

There is no wiring difference between SDHC and SDXC.

As such, use whatever card you drat well please is what I am saying, they *should* all work unless the firmware engineers are being stupid.

I listen to terrible music and talk to myself a lot, but I decided it is much easier to mute a video before uploading it or risk embarrassment than to get in a situation where I wish I had the audio recorded. There are a number of scenarios with people approaching your car I could imagine where it would be helpful, but that recent Canadian t-bone video has reason enough: you can hear the guy who pulled out say "sorry, that was my fault" at the end of the video. The video has already been used to charge him for the accident (though admittedly his case wouldn't be looking too good with a silent video either).

That's what I figured. I had a half dozen 64gb cards lying around from a trip last year. I don't know why they claim 32gb. You'd think they'd wanna claim support for as big as they can. Probably just old manuals from when 32gb was the biggest available.

That and block sizes have a lot to do with it. If they aren't checking what block sizes the cards have before formatting you may be losing some speed when recording. No that it would matter in the slightest, but you may get a few frame drops at the end of the card.

Loop Recording

does off means it'll fill up the card and then it's done or will it over write the oldest part of the video?

10 minute loop recording mean it records 10 minutes, saves it, moves on and then deletes the oldest 10 minute chunk when the card is full?
