I always figured QuickTime for Windows was Apple's revenge for PC software with poor or absent Mac ports. It just was always that bad.

Plus the "pro" features (like movie saving) it begged you to shill for were included for free on a mac.

Speaking of that, anyone else glad that most CPU coolers don't have to be mounted with screwdriver pressure any more? These big fuckers were a pain and I was always afraid of gouging my board if I slipped:

Yeah, I killed a motherboard that way once. I have put hundreds of heatsinks on, and a huge number of them were that style clamp, so I guess I should count my self lucky that I only did it once.

Hi, it's time to update Quicktime, and while you're at it, why don't you install iTunes and Safari and MobileMe? Oh, did I steal focus while you're in the middle of a presentation? well you should have killed the processes and scheduled tasks because the checkbox in options to disable this popup sure as hell doesn't do anything. What's that? you clicked minimize? gently caress you, I'm not minimizing, have fun getting back to whatever slide your PowerPoint presentation was on.

They were free with the version that came with your OS when you bought a mac, however, you'd have to buy a license if you later upgraded the OS version. And they were totally free in the early days (pre-8.6 or so I think).

My parents had a 150Mhz 1st Gen Pentium Compaq with this piece of poo poo on it. Tried it a few times, never touched it again.

I remember this loathsome pile of hate computer taking ~45 seconds at a minimum to start AOL version 3.0 too.

That and the 'Compaq Diagnostics' which would freeze at the opening progress bar and never finish opening.

No wonder Compaq got eaten by HP.

That was just 10.4 retail copies. I spent a full 8-hour shift live-resizing a window in a QuickTime demo during the Tiger release and saying "it comes with the pro features!" to people even geekier than myself. Then 10.5 didn't come with it and people went apeshit, as though I could change that.

Eugh. I remember a website offering some videos from a Dreamcast game that I wanted to see, but they were Realmedia. I probably gave my computer a dozen STDs installing Realplayer, and then when it would finally launch, the videos were basically animated thumbnails. Quicktime had an ungodly startup time too. On one hand it's crazy how much things have changed, on the other hand, that's like 12 years ago. My life...

Counter‐counter‐counter‐point: Comic Sans MS is bad for comics. It was better than Arial or Times New Roman for a one‐off talking dog at extremely low pixel density, but you can do better if you’re making a comic today.

The letterforms are bad, the default kerning is bad, and it lacks glyphs for things like breath marks or double letters (so they don’t look repetitive).

Oh the phone calls to Macromedia trying to work out their new fangled video tools in the days when half of it was undocumented.

Quicktime got it's kicks from The Phantom Menace (of all things) when Apple noticed no one really had the ability to stream decent quality video, so put a proposal to LucasFilm and subsequently Apple.com/trailers was born.

My company switched from Netscape Mail to Lotus Domino back a little over 10 years ago. The reason we went with Lotus instead of Exchange at the time was that Exchange didn't support single mailbox restores at the time (Lotus did) and that there were still a number of viruses that targeted Exchange/Outlook.

We are currently in the process of migrating to Office 365 and while the conversion is a pain, the system is so much better.

As I've understood it, the main reason to use Lotus Notes is as a development platform, where email is just one of the features; it's supposedly a reasonable way to make enterprise-wide database/messaging things.

To my knowledge I've never been in the same building as an open Notes client, so I have no idea how true that is.

Back when I worked at Bang & Olufsen, we used Lotus Notes as a pretty decent all-round tool. Our entire IT knowledgebase, planned changes, known errors just about everything was implemented as a Notes database, even our weekly pizza run had a list. Most of the company kept their various data i Notes apps and databases.

It worked pretty well and must have been a breeze to manage, considering we only had two full-time Lotus Notes admins for ~5000 employees.

Pretty much this. Most of the reasons people hate Lotus Domino is because of Lotus Notes. The server piece is actually pretty robust and not too hard to work with if you have it set up correctly. And you can do a lot with it if you have a Domino apps development team.

But the Notes client is doesn't look or act much like a standard Windows app, more so on older version (older being 4+ years old). I know a number of our users unofficially used Outlook instead.

Since it seems like fondness for obsolete tech has been a running theme in this thread, I figured I'd post the video for "100 Days, 100 Nights" by Sharon Jones. The video's from 2007, but it was all shot on old TV cameras and has that great old strobey look from shows like "Top of the Pops."

I actually do notes-to-exchange migrations professionally, and it is incredibly common to hear a client say the reason they're moving away from notes is because a new executive arrived, was utterly horrified by the notes interface, and basically mandated that they're making the leap.

90% of the time the IT department is glad to go along with it, even if the prime motivator is an exec who hates strange things.
