The Decemberists are playing their first live show since 2011 at Boston Calling in May and I'm surprisingly excited about it.

I have always loved the Decemberists (by always I mean up to and including the crane wife) but I have never seen them outside of a festival setting. Also 2 out of the 3 times they were at bonnaroo they conflicted with Wilco, and Wilco always won, so if they make it to Toronto I will probably try to make it to that because they are one band I have listened to way to much to have never seen a full length proper set from.

The Angry Mariners Revenge will forever be my favorite song to obnoxiously sing along to at work.

Also, speaking of uncool bands that we unapologetically love, did anyone else listen to the new Tokyo Police Club album?

It was a let down for me, the best 8 and a half minutes of it are at the start and were released 3-4 months ago. (in there defense though its a drat good 8 1/2 minutes)

Having said that the rest of the album feels like they were toning down that childish stupidily happy sound that endeared me the first 2 full lengths.

Yeah this was more or less my exact take on it as well. Bar was set pretty high and I set myself up to be let down a bit. The third part of Argentina has been stuck in my head more consistently than anything else for a while now.

I think Hot Tonight is alright though.

It was a bad sign when that song was made the opener and not the closer. I think Miserable (even though it sounds like Relient K) and Tunnel Vision are good cuts too.

Well they have kind of disappeared for a while and their sound isn't very current anymore, I don't think it's wrong to call them passe.

I really enjoyed the decemberists years ago but if somebody brought them up now I'd just kind of shrug and say whatever. They haven't been relevant in years and that has nothing to do with them being a fashion accessory or what have you.

I've been really into the Torn Hawk album recently, don't exactly know if it falls into this thread or not. Instrumental guitar and synth poo poo worked through 80s fuzz (I hate describing music and I'm terrible at it). Reminds me a bit of emeralds, a bit of oneohtrix point never. I just like the production and his general sound aesthetic.

Withered Hand put out his second album yesterday and it's pretty nice. He's an English/Scottish solo artist with some Belle & Sebastian and Los Campesinos! similarities.

Also, what are folks thoughts on the new Liars record? I like it a lot more than their last. Kinda reminds me of a more polished version of their early stuff. This is my current jam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf1fbu7zLII‎

The new album from Split Single, which is another project featuring Britt Daniel of Spoon, comes out April 1. You can stream some tracks from it here. This increases the number of indie bands that are tangentially related to Wolf Parade to all of them.

Just finished my first listen of The Pixies' first album in 20+ years, Indie Cindy (:ughh:), and man, they really should've just stayed dead. I love all their old albums but this is not a welcome addition to their discography. No Kim Deal really blows. That wouldn't have been a dealbreaker (:mmmhmm:) for me if the music had still been memorable, but it's not. I didn't get the sense that I'd get any of these songs stuck in my head at random times as I have (and still do regularly) with a bunch of their older tunes.

Some bands from the 80s/90s reuniting recently have produced amazing results (example: Dinosaur Jr.), but that's not the case here.

These guys are great. I saw them opening for Patrick Watson around 2010 and I didn't quite get them at the time. Then I bought Creep On Creepin' On a year later and fell in love with their sound.

A while ago, I had posted about the Colourist. They've recently released their first full-length, self-titled album. I think most, if not all, of their tracks are super catchy and fun to listen to. Mostly upbeat stuff; good to get a positive, energetic mood going. I particularly like some of the new tracks that were not present on their previous EPs, like "Say You Need Me":

Hello friends!

I came upon this split EP with contributions by Yohuna, Emily Reo, MoonLasso, and Brown Bread last night. I had not previously heard of any of these artists but it's an excellent slice of ambient pop music. The music is largely insular, dreamy and synth-based with fleeting, nearly indecipherable female vocals laid over it. Why don't more musicians put out EPs again? There isn't a weak track on here...

Sorry if this is a repeat, couldn't find any mention of them quite a few pages back or search, but Sylvan Esso is absolutely amazing. They have only had a handful of songs for the past year and a half or so, but I just discovered they are releasing a full ten song album in May. The lead singer looks and dresses like some middle aged mom, but her voice is such beautiful ear candy. Posting some live performances to show they sound just as amazing without much digital clean up.

If y'all will allow my indulgence, let this Australian sing his love of Canadian label Arts and Craft. I hate it when a record label or artist advertises that I can buy their record direct from them plus $X in shipping which is usually more than half of the amount of the CD itself, but for downloading they just have an iTunes link. I hate iTunes, going direct to the label is supposed to halt my money going to their margins. This is especially the case for Australian labels, and in the odd occasion where I decide okay you're a small indie I'll buy the CD, twice now they've come weeks late and any follow up emails is met with passive aggressive "I'm only one guy, jerk" type responses. I don't give a crap that it takes you effort to write on an envelope when you could have set up a bandcamp page and taken my money in exchange for music now.

Arts and Craft though I can listen to the entire album on Soundcloud first to make sure I like them, then go and pay an easy $9 and get a direct download instantly. Apart from Timber Timbre, they're now distributing for hosed Up which means as I've now pre-ordered their new album I can morally download it when it gets leaked 2 weeks earlier than the release date. The only thing I don't like is setting up an account for just buying an album - again why I love bandcamp over all - but oh well nothings perfect.

After those two releases, I've been going through their back catalogue and finding some great stuff:

NO - El Prado
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvXs3m2mn3g
https://soundcloud.com/artsandcrafts/sets/no-el-prado-arts-crafts-2014
In the age of google searches, calling your band 'NO' is brave/stupid. First listen is an instant 'Yeah okay a band aping the National' but like the National the songs take a while to sink in and show their own individual character, and once you get to that point you'll hear that every track is crafted so drat well. One of my favorite parts of the National is the drumming which is what I think alot of the similar sounding bands forget about, NO definitely lets their drummer take control and do what needs to be done (see There's a Glow)

Lowell

This song is very Sky Ferriera, the rest on the EP are a bit more subdued MS MR vibe. I'm a sucker for well made female vox synth pop.

Apparently this song is from his 7th album, so maybe he's more popular than I know of. I've tried listening to the full album but nothings grabbing me yet, but this song is just such a perfect pop duet about drunken regrets. To me there's something magical (for lack of a less wanky word) about the way the chorus is structured and sung that has caused me to replay this video for far too long over the last couple of days trying to sing it right myself.

I don't know how to do this
But will you leave with me right now
Nothing good can ever come from this in the long run

Apparently this album came out like 2 weeks ago but I just got an email about it today. Jimi Goodwin, frontman for Doves, released his first solo album, Odludek, on March 21st. And here's the first single from it, entitled Oh! Whiskey.

As a huge fan of Doves, I really dig it. I was upset that they'd taken a break a few years ago because I wanted to hear new music from them. This definitely satisfies me, though.

Yeah he's been around forever. My favourite part of his new stuff is he seems to be going the same direction as Mark Kozelek where as he ages he gets more introspective and personal with his lyrics, resulting in recording songs about recording songs (with his kid sleeping in the next room). He's been one of my favourite Canadian artists since I heard Bass Song on Much Music as a teenager.

There was so much energy following the Webster Hall show last June that spontaneous dance circles broke out once house lights came up.

I've caught them twice in NYC in smaller venues than they seem to be playing this tour. The music is great and fun to dance to, though, so I hope you have a blast.
