The Germans issued the challenge with their fart-sucking, perfume-dispensing S-class seats; Americans answered it with the motorized cup holder.

I just don't get that motorised cupholder lid at all. The amount of effort it takes to get the thing moving looks to be the same as what it would take to just open it normally in the first place. Not to mention I just wouldn't trust it. What if you went to close it with a coffee in there? Would the lid stop or would it crush the lovely cardboard cup and you'd end up with coffee everywhere?

I imagine it's got some sort of auto-stop mechanism like windows do, where it stops if the computer senses resistance.

Yeah, I don't think resistance is what stops them, they only stop once it recognizes that upward movement is prevented. By then, serious pain has occurred.

Yeah, I've seen fingers broken by those. Even as an EE (hell, especially as an EE) I'd never want a motorized center console lid. That's a solution looking for a problem, and it's not even a good solution.

Which encapsulates Cadillac / GM thinking right now. Like the STS I had -- main outside door handles have no mechanical linkage to the doors, instead, you pull the handle which triggers a microswitch. Microswitch triggers a popper that opens the door... which sucks for 2 reasons a) when you pull the door handle, there's an annoying delay between when you pull the handle and the door opening and b) the microswitches fail and you're hosed.

The upside to this is it would be easy as hell to shave the door handles and get remote poppers. e: Content...turn up your speakers and enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu3S_huKihY angryhampster fucked around with this message at 22:27 on Mar 30, 2014 |

Leno finally finished his hot rod Lotus Elan Nothing like putting an Elan on a diet and adding power There's a bunch of videos going through the restoration process at his website, too. Now that he's off of TV, I hope he goes more into the Garage stuff. It's amazing how much I hated him, until I started watching the car poo poo he does. Now I think he's one of the coolest celebrities ever. He's much, much better at hosting auto poo poo than he was as a comedian. Seizure Meat fucked around with this message at 01:59 on Apr 1, 2014 |
