well it actually ended in 2012.

anyway the way it worked is that you could get additional online storage accessible anywhere by giving up your existing storage. further, your online storage given would be modified by how foten your computer was connected - give 10 gb of your drive over but only have your computer connected 12 hours a day, and you'd only get 5 gb of online service

these days its a simple free storage up to 5 gb and paid storage over that service.

Say what you want about BitCoin in general but the technology behind it is pretty amazing. It has all the indicators - it empowers people, it endangers the status quo, it is distributed and decentralized and it cannot be stopped by "traditional means", hackers and geeks love it, youngsters understand it while old people don't... Bitcoin is not just a currency...it's proof of ownership. This will forever change the way the world operates and currency is a subset. This has opened a limitless number of other applications. Bitcoin is programmable money, and there are things you can do with it that you simply cannot do with fiat or gold.

amateurs selling to the pros. And then the pros will own the market.

If I was conspiracy minded I'd think they were driving the market down by selling on the exchanges as they make deals off exchanges to buy from private parties with big amounts of bitcoin that are panicking. It's not like it's difficult to manipulate bitcoin as it's a small market.

[–]jron 1 point 1 minute ago

Every BTC sold is a BTC bought. The weak are getting fleeced.

[–]wtjones 0 points 2 hours ago

Without amateurs there isn't an reason for bitcoin to exist.

[–]ExtraMegaDoge 14 points 4 hours ago

This is why I'm bullish. While the Bitcoin neckbeards were freaking out, these guys bought up 12% of all Bitcoins mined last month. And this is just a single fund. And that was at a rate of 25 coins per block.

[–]zjbird 4 points 2 hours ago

And they've only lost about $5 million of value in the last few hours!

[–]Tester24834 1 point 2 hours ago

The British had to lose money buying cannons and guns before they made money invading lands with those cannons and guns.

[–]ExtraMegaDoge 0 points 1 hour ago

Not a lot of money to professional investors. You have to have at least 25K to even sit at this particular table. I don't think you appreciate what kind of buying pressure there is going to be once Joe Schmo can get bitcoin into his 401k. Give it time.

[–]Markateer 24 points 5 hours ago

This is what I'm talking about, look at what the smart money is doing.

[–]jtsnau 12 points 3 hours ago

Exactly. The amateur investors freaking out, and the people who do this for a living are calm.

[–]duduqa 5 points 3 hours ago

Barry Silbert seem to be a great salesman. I can´t imagine how many investors will chime in once the price starts to skyrocket again.

[–]Prominence19 13 points 4 hours ago

I said it before and I'll say it again: There's some careful manipulation going on. A logical explanation would be spreading Fear Uncertainty and Doubt to lower the prices before buying that amount of Bitcoin.

Detroit needs to be OVERHAULED onto the blockchain (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 25 minutes ago by ameanbitcoiner

If there is one American city that needs to be put on the blockchain it would be the D. What a great opportunity this is for the bitcoin community to show a struggling city that has faced many hardships from closing schools, threats to closing the zoo, and arts and music institutes, to deny retiree their pensions, and state take overs of services. I have heard speakers say that bitcoin will be adapted in other countries far sooner than us. But why? We have 3rd world status cities right here in the U.S. This isn't a knock on Detroit. People who know there REAL story know why the decline happend. But I digress. Detroit's main issues are finance and crime. We have the finance answer. Bitcoin. And the new technologies that come along with it, open transactions, zero trust, proof of work, and proof of stake, and on and on. All this will help Detroit get away from the need to rely on its corrupt politicians. Once finance stability is achieved and jobs are created crime WILL go down. Folks here need to know about bitcoin and what it can offer.

“If it becomes only 10 percent as popular as gold, then it’s an $800 billion market value. You can lose 100 percent of your money, or you can make 120 times your money. I think the risk reward is OK.” With these odds it doesn't make sense not to be in. (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 1 hour ago by ConditionDelta

The title is a quote from Bill Miller. He is the chairman of the $702 Billion fund, Legg Mason.

Bitcoin is viewed with a binary outcome, which it should be. If it succeeds, which he and many prominent investors, Tech pioneers, and r/bitcoin subscribers believe it will then the return is gigantic. 120x your money from his quote which was taken at a higher level then we are right now, and potentially more so by my own projections.

It's a standard +E/V play.

Wikipedia has this to say about expected value: "In probability theory the expected value of a random variable is the sum of the probability of each possible outcome of the experiment multiplied by the outcome value (or payoff).

"Thus, it represents the average amount one 'expects' as the outcome of the random trial when identical odds are repeated many times."

The odds are unknown in Bitcoin but we can take best guesses on the impact that it will potentially have. It makes sense to be in Bitcoin right now. China is irrelevant to the future outcome.

Bitcoin Tourism Made Easy (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 2 hours ago by CoinFest

Are there any Bitcoin tourists out there? People have long since been talking about the benefits of Bitcoin for tourism, but somebody in British Columbia seems to have made some actual headway. The idea was, we want people from other countries to be able to visit us without having to interact with overpriced currency exchanges or banking institutions. The plan is to start by hitting resorts, where tourists are plentiful per capita, and the expenses more justified.

So far, the guy in Whistler is doing this by having set up a company called ClickJett, which lets you book travel and accommodations (among other things) using Bitcoin. Once you get there, he has another company called Logicoins that operates an ATM specialized for crypto selling, so that you can convert to local currency for use at places not accepting crypto, yet. The best Bitcoin movie is Ghostbusters (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 1 hour ago by erikwithaknotac

It's about a group of like minded people who find a solution to a problem (Fiat money system). The thing is, most people don't believe that problem exists, even when they experience the problem first-hand (inflation, QE, etc), they dismiss it as something else. The group is seen as a joke until they start capturing more and more ghosts (gaining value and acceptance). Then this gets the attention of government regulators who listen to critics that say they are making the whole thing up(Claims Bitcoin is a Ponzi). The regulator (governments like China and US) has no experience dealing with ghosts (Bitcoin) or busineses that deal with capturing and storing ghosts (BTC Exchanges) so he shuts them down. This causes not only the business to go under, but releases all sorts of bad poo poo (FUD, price crash). Then they go to jail for breaking rules that shouldn't apply to them (Charlie Shrem, Local bitcoin exchangers) Luckily in the movie, the mayor sees the shitstorm that is coming (fiat collapse) and gets the government to support the Ghostbusters. The Ghostbusters climb a skyscraper (to the moon) and save the day by blowing up the marshmallow man (Federal Reserve) by crossing/combining the streams (altcoin-unification) Then they all get laid.

[–]Kinny-James 1 point 14 minutes ago

"A Prophet" is a 2009 French prison/crime film.

Its my perfect analogy film for btc.

Main character (bitcoin) is a half French half Arab street punk who goes to prison and learns the ins and outs of all the gangster sub-groups (finance systems) to eventually become the top Player because he outsmarts them all.

Are you a business "accepting" bitcoin? That's not good enough - here is how you can help if you REALLY wanted to support it. (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 3 hours ago by veroxii

There are lots of theories on the latest price drops. China is obvious for the current extreme correction, but I've seen quite a few things blamed for the slower slide of the last couple of months, such as the alt-coin dilution effect (and I think sidechains could be a great solution for that).

One of the other factors being blamed is the huge influx of businesses "accepting" bitcoin, but selling the coins immediately for fiat via Bitpay, Coinbase, Gyft or other similar services.

The theory goes that this constant selling is putting a steady downward pressure on the markets, especially if early adopters use "old coins" to buy things and don't refill.

What is the solution? Well, I understand that inventory has to bought in fiat, employees need to be paid, bills, etc. But if you as a business truly want to support bitcoin, you have to keep a percentage of your revenue as bitcoin.

It does not have to be a large amount. It could be a fraction of the amount you would've paid to a credit card processor. But over time it strengthens the bitcoin economy by ensuring fiat is flowing into the ecosystem continuously. Yes, there will still be a lot of churning of instant fiat conversion, but just keeping that 1% or a fraction of a percent, will ensure a steady increase in the "market cap".

So, if you truly believe in bitcoin, don't just worry about the P&L, but move some bitcoins onto your balance sheet. In fact, you'll be deferring some revenue which could be beneficial at tax time. And who knows, in a few years that half a percent you've kept from every transaction might be worth exponentially more.

[–]ezen 2 points 2 hours ago

It's temporary. Once these businesses start accepting bitcoin they should then buy their supplies not with fiat but with bitcoin they received. That business then does the same and on and on it goes.

Alright, I'm getting tired of people holding btc and seeing btc go down. While they invested their college funds/90% of their money/money of their parents etc.

Yes, the price is going down atm, we're bearish. Don't bring that poo poo.. No were bullish compared to 2 years ago.

People are thinking about suicide right now because they bought btc at a high price and we're just hoping the price would go up. It's just downtrending and just don't fight the trend.

Yes we all know, buy at dips etc, but what if you wait some more and do some technical analysis.

Some people here are just to arrogant to admit were going down. Wolong, the great pump and dumper of dogecoin was laughing at people with arrogance. They didn't sell when the time was right.

Alright maybe some of you don't have the knowledge to short btc and get money while the price is going down.

But what you can do, is sell your btc, and buy it back lower. And repeat. Instead of holding and hoping the price will go up.

Some people bought at 800 oor higher and still didn't sell. If they just sold, and bought back, they doubled their btc.

Is it so hard for people to understand. Everyone on twitter and IRC is laughing about the arrogant people on reddit. And calling /r/bitcoin a cult. And saying things like, bitcoin goes down but hey atleast I'm not someone of reddit and lying btc will reach 10000$.

Who are facing loses and loses. But join twitter if you guys want to trade instead of investing and hoping that the price will go up.

I wrote a bitcoin trading guide. Instasaver.net/m/tradingguide Here is Wolong his pdf http://youtu.be/JHi-wmRZzvs And google for trading techniques and tips to Investopedia and look things up like Dead cat bounce, bull trap, bear trap, RSI, MACD, moving average, crossovers etc.

On twitter.. You can follow @ActualAdviceBTC @MegaCoinTrader @simply_stig @CryptoCobain @jebus911 @altcoinguides

Stop making hosed up loses and being scared to sell your btc and buy back lower or to short/short sell

Feel free to Hate me if you want. I'm just being honest. If you guys want my mail to send me hate mails or my Twitter to send me hate tweets, please do it.. I love to have a laugh.
