I think Ru called it best when LaGanga was saying that she speaks like that all the time and everybody loves her, to which Ru said, "Girl, that's the night club." I'm sure on stage that worked great, especially with people knowing that she is Alyssa's daughter and Shangela's sister. Having to listen to somebody speak that way 24/7 isn't even the problem. It's just the way that LaGanga did it, it sounded so forced and fake. She just didn't seem like a genuine person, even to Adore who has known her for years.

Haven't read the thread, maybe it's been pointed out, but I am confused by Laganga--Bianca says she's only been doing this for 2 years, and Laganga seemed to admit that this was correct. And previously, Laganga had stated that her family was fairly supportive of her. And that after breaking into the drag world, she'd been taken under the wing of Alyssa and had become good friends with Shangela.

So when Laganga tearfully claims on the runway that she's "sacrificed everything" to get there, what is she referring to?

I had no idea of her relationship with Alyssa "Annoying As gently caress" Edwards, so this all makes sense to me now. :byewhore:

I am up for as much Latrice as the world sees fit to show me. True story: the other day I was feeling kind of cranky and stressed out from work. On the walk to my car I suddenly remembered the existence of Latrice for some random reason, and then I heard his laugh in my head and I just started smiling really big and immediately felt better. Latrice is like the Great Barrier Reef: even if you never see it in person, it makes the world feel like a better place just knowing it's there.

I was rewatching the lip-sync and I like how Courtney still refuses to give credit where credit is due. She says that both the girls just happened to do the splits at the same time without looking at each other, but if you watch you can see Joslyn look over at Laganja who's stretching out her leg in preparation and completely telegraphing her move. The way I saw it, Josyln knew what Laganja was going to do and decided to beat her to the punch. The fact that they both hit at the same time right on beat was just icing on the cake.

I'm honestly surprised Latrice hasn't been doing web shows of some sort. Whether it's the Dear Abby/Q&A stylings of Misty Eyez's youtube channel, or logo/WoW made a web series where Latrice plays Oprah to down-and-out reality TV stars, there's a goddamn audience for it. Wow presents gave Santino a web show (the thumbnail shows him topless with some kind of juicer :barf:) so I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a matter of giving Latrice the idea and having them roll with it (not a fat joke). On the other hand they turned down Willam's Beatdown and let Phi Phi guest in everything they can shoehorn her into so maybe they prefer terrible things.

He's soooo dreamy...

Saw Ben last night, and Bianca, Adore, Laganja and Courtney tonight at the Parliament House in Orlando. Ben's sets were hilarious and very technically well done... her lip-syncing was easily the best of all of them. Bianca was hilarious as always, and her second set was lip-syncing Sissy That Walk, which was fantastic and actually included the most stone-faced death drop I've ever seen. Adore owned the crowd during her first lip sync, her personality is completely captivating, and her second set was singing "I Love Rock and Roll", which was okay... until she did some fire-breathing over the audience, crowd surfed, and then dove in the pool. Polish schmolish, she's a born entertainer and the only thing separating her and Bianca for me at this point is an extra 15 years of experience. They both had the audience in the palm of their hand the entire time. Courtney sung a few songs, was generally pleasant and charming, and when one woman down in front yelled something lovely about Joslyn, Courtney shut her right up and defended Joslyn, to the cheers of the audience.

Laganja fell over a lot.

Can't wait for tonight's episode, especially since I get to appreciate the "You've got She-Mail!" line for one of the last times. :sigh:

From the RuPaul's Drag Race Facebook:

quote:

We wanted to thank the community for sharing their concerns around a recent segment and the use of the term 'she-mail' on Drag Race.

Logo has pulled the episode from all of our platforms and that challenge will not appear again.

Furthermore, we are removing the 'You've Got She-Mail' intro from new episodes of the series.

We did not intend to cause any offense, but in retrospect we realize that it was insensitive. We sincerely apologize.

Oh joy, the show that taught me the most about the idiocy of the gender binary is deciding that now is not the time to be irreverent of...the gender binary. Great job everyone, we cured RuPaul's blatant transphobia. :downs:

EDIT: Just to be clear, using "she-male" in a derogatory fashion against transfolks is awful, no question about that. Drag queens using a pun to talk about themselves, though, doesn't exactly come across as an anti-trans slur.

This is definitely connected to the recent Twitterstorm a few weeks ago about the whole "Female or She-Male" mini-challenge that did get a lot of people who had never watched the show jumping down LOGO's throat. They then migrated to the "You've Got She-Mail" thing as further evidence of LOGO/RuPaul being anti-LGBT. The actual mini-challenge, as people failed to realize, just made the very drat big point that gender is incredibly malleable, but someone used one of the no-no words, so it's off to the races.

If you really, really want to read more about it, trans activist Andrea James wrote a piece on the controversy and the basic fact that Twitter is probably awful for cogently and calmly discussing just about anything.

On topic, looks like Chaz Bono and friends are going to be doing the talk show challenge on tonight's episode! Based on the trailer, one of the queens really screws up. Can't wait!

My problem was that it (once again) conflated trans people with a form of cross-dressing. Drag queens are generally not (in the show's language) "psychological women" and "biological women" is a loaded term for many trans and intersex people. Add in the additional bit that "shemale" is a derogatory term used in porn, and the whole segment gets too close to what many non-cis women have to face.

To add to the thread discussion, who else is going to miss it tonight because of their seder? I'm hoping that Darienne gets kicked off tonight.

Article that popped up on my FB feed about the 'She-Mail' segment.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/our-lady-j/rupauls-drag-race_b_5148719.html?utm_hp_ref=tw

My take on it:

People do have the right to be upset, but what is a drag queen?

If you take away the insult-comic side of Bianca, what do you have? :( Drag Queens are so much more than dressing up as a female. (Que Milk)

All together, I didn't find the 'She-Mail' side of Drag Race offensive (I find that it was always a jab at Tyra Banks). However, calling Carmen Carerra a She Male is offensive. It's how you apply it.

The challenge of Female or She-Male was offensive. Using the words She-Mail as to parody She-Male imo isn't offensive.

It's not the Trans community's job to harass Ru Paul's show. Everyone watches the show, and up until NOW, they complain about it? Or is there a long line of complaints that the show has received, and Ru Paul has ignored it, because he believes in having no boundaries?

Either Way, they just have to change it to Ru-Mail, or something else that won't get Ru harassed for trying to make people laugh.

what a humorous anecdote.
Editing the "she-mail" thing is less about that being offensive by itself and more about the fact that removing the segment that used it to refer to "women who aren't really women" (which is what most people got upset about) and not editing that as well would be hypocritical.

Bina posted:

Carmen Carrera gave the suggestion of "Fe-mail" which keeps the intended pun without being derived from a slur. May be less funny but it will appease the people who are pissed about it.

It should have been Joslyn in the bottom with Adore, I think. I can't believe Joslyn was safe after asking Cher's mom about almost getting an abortion. :wtc:, girl? She did seem genuinely apologetic, and I guess it's not something worth her eliminated over since she did apologize. I just think that slip up was worse than Adore being nervous, though. I just wanted to see more of Trinity, and I feel like Joslyn's not long for this competition anyway. She and Darienne better be the next to go, I'll be happy no matter what if that's the case. I think Ben, Courtney, Bianca, or Adore could honestly take it now.

That lip sync was everything, though. Goddamn. Why is it the Paula Abdul songs that seem to bring out the best in these queens? Coco and Alyssa destroyed each other to "Cold Hearted" last season, too.

Trinity has grown a loving lot over the competition, she's really humble and took her elimination like a champ. I hope to see more of her.

For those that don't watch after the show (why don't you watch Untucked), Magnolia said that she thinks celebrity impersonations are stupid, and also said "gently caress Cher." Adore's reaction was hysterical. "Who the gently caress is that?!? I've never met it."

I love that Magnolia keeps putting her foot in the mouth from the grave.

Joslyn really should have been in the bottom with Adore between her runway and her interview, but oh well. What can you do :smith:. I wish Ben would have won this one, too. Her interview felt really genuine and her runway was great; quirky and weird and still amazingly stylish. Plus, she had her face painted like an evil Disney queen.

Joslyn's time was up, and I'm ready to see her go. Black horse or not, she's seriously outmatched on the runway at this stage of the game. And they tell Adore she's coasting on charisma.

My faith in Courtney is restored because she was a manipulative little minx this episode! As soon as Ben told her to be sensitive, she started pulling out all the stops — right before that smug little "Won another challenge" :smuggo:confessional. Clever girl. Would be a lock for top three in any other season but in a crowd like Adore, Ben, and Bianca, there's no guarantees.

Ben still gets the best line of the episode though: "My exoskeleton is in disarray!" Dela for Queen of the Nerds! :toot: Queen Bee Bianca isn't always going to be there to read a bitch, though, should have told Darienne to put a sock in it. :colbert:
