I shopped though, boy did I shop before I picked up my 13. MazdaSpeed3 was too hard, Focus ST was too boy ricer, STI was too bargain-bin interior. The R is as close to the perfect car for me that I can find here in the USA. The only thing that I'd like better would be if we got a wagon variant but that won't happen.

So yeah, I'll be joining veedub and be picking up the new R when it becomes available here in the US in 2015, although I'm not a fan of the new wheels they've gone with.

I think this pretty much states better than I could have. The Focus is an economy car thats hopped up on roids. The STI is made of tin foil. If you have never actually driven a VW, there is a reason they cost more than other cars. They're loving nice inside. There is very little difference between a VW and Audi these days. As to the comparison of the R vs a BMW, I'm pretty sure the new R is going to be faster than the equally priced BMW and also a hatchback.

There are supposed to be 2 style of wheels available for the new R. I plan on using the stock wheels for winter and my Petrols for summer.

Won't you pay through the rear to upgrade though? It just seems like such a step penalty to swap after only a few years.

I'll be honest, I like AWD, I just don't think it's the end all be all. I live in MN as well. So that's saying a lot. Granted track days are quite expensive up here, so maybe I just haven't experienced all of its benefits.

You'd be surprised. VWs hold their resale pretty drat well. I'll be looking at about 2000 a year depreciation when I go to trade mine in. But then again I only put 10k a year on it and it is immaculate.

Seems like bad financial planning to me. Your talking sport bike or NA/NB Miata depreciation over two years of ownership.

If it were a huge jump I could see it, but a quick tune and you're 99% there. Difference of perspective I guess.

My wife and I change cars every 3 years on average. We lease hers, I finance mine (drive too many miles to lease). Money is cheap to borrow right now and we both enjoy driving nice new/newer vehicles. Not the smartest financial decision, but it's something we choose to spend our disposable income on. Some goons collect warhammer figurines, others anime and comic books. Everyone spends their disposable income on stuff they like, some folks choose to do it on newer cars. Vehicle depreciation can be a real bitch though. My wife's lease is pretty decent due to cheap interest rates and high residual values. My SHO though, I paid almost 20K less than sticker on a 1 year old model with 18K miles. Someone took a giant kick in the balls on that deal.

If you have another track nearby that does a good school for less than the cost of the tickets/hotel/car maybe not. Denver to Salt Lake is pretty dirt cheap.

There is something to say for driving your own model of car. It did make me want a Ford racing exhaust pretty bad though.

I was waiting on word if they were going to do it at CotA which is 25 minutes from me. The local dealer said they were trying to get it put together for this Fall. I'd rather drive CotA over MSR if given the choice. I've done CotA before and it's a hell of a nice track. If I don't get a positive word from them tomorrow I'll be headed to MSR next week with my Abarth.

I test drove a Fiesta ST over the weekend. The car was fine but the salesman was annoying as hell. Went with me for the drive that was only about five miles on 25mph roads and I made the mistake of showing that I liked the car. When we got back he tried to hard sell me on doing something that day after I told him I was only there for a test drive and I wasn't going to commit to anything. I really need to learn how to be an rear end in a top hat when necessary, should have just left after five minutes of him trying to get me to leave a down payment.

The car was great, from what I got to see, like a better version of my SES. I'll have to order one though since I want Recaros but no sunroof. Is the Navigation worth it for $795?

I ordered one with recaros and no nav or sunroof, but the order got botched and I ended up getting a loaded one with recaros, nav and sunroof.

The sunroof is really far back so it's slightly useless but kind of nice. The Nav is way worse than google maps on my iphone. Not worth it imo. Completely impossible to add a route with voice commands, so you have to type it in and even that can be a pain. Mine actually completely froze up today and left a big "cancel route" dialog on the nav and wouldnt go away even after I turned the car off/on. I had to use voice commands to fix it.

Definitely not worth $800 - just get a nice smartphone mount.

Doesn't work in the cold (reads off an SD card in the center console, mine ceases to read if it's below freezing) so if you live north of I dunno, Charlotte, you're better off without. And the voice commands are complete shite as is the touch screen interface. So basically what Voltage said.

SFH1989

Thanks for the help that's kind of what I was assuming. Even if it worked well I have a Garmin and smartphone so it would be redundant. And I live in CT so it will get cold.

The sun roof has a few things against it; it's $800, awkwardly far back, adds ~50lbs to the top of the car, and drops the ceiling. The last one will be a problem since I'm tall and want to at least auto-x it so a helmet won't fit well with a sunroof. Must drop the ceiling a good amount too since I have plenty of headroom in my SES.

Now I just need to pick a color: red, blue, or molten orange.

I haven't noticed any issues with the Nav during the polar vortex but it isn't a great interface. About half the time I just use my phone instead.

I think the blue looks a lot better in person than in pictures so try to see one if you can.

It was very difficult for me to find a blue FoST with the options I wanted, so I settled for black. I don't really care, it gets street parked in an incredibly dense urban area so the paint's gonna get hosed anyway :( This is how I rationalize.

You don't get to drive your own car during the Abarth track day. They bring a couple trailers full of their own cars for you to drive. It's great because you're tearing up someone else's car. lovely part is no pics of you being awesome in your own car.

I don't think the VIN trick would work though as they know who bought what Abarths and when. You get a whole 'Welcome to the Abarth Family' package a couple weeks after you pick up the car. The packet comes with a snazzy, and easy as hell to lose, Abarth usb/keychain.

I just said that because when I first heard about the Abarth track day thing, I was excited to sign up thinking that it would be free like the CTS-V Lab. Alas, you either have to have purchased an Abarth or fork over way more cash than a trackday would run you. (Just like the Jaguar Villain Academy.)

The main guy claiming PD was ruining his clearcoat has locked all the comments on his Youtube videos. The theory is he was using rattlecan clear, dipping it and then peeling it off to make it look like the Dip was responsible. The dude from Dip Your Car has dipped his own car like 40 times now and his clear is still intact.

Yeah I was going to say, I haven't dipped any painted body panels at all (yet) just my wheels and some trim pieces, and I can't see how Plasti Dip could hurt a clear coat at all as long as it was applied on a clean and not-rusty panel.

As for keeping it clean yes and no. There is a texture to it so it 'grabs' more loose dirt, but bugs and typical road grime seems to not stick as easily. This represents itself that you have to wipe with light pressure over more of whatever is dipped, but you don't have to do that scrub-pressure with your finger thing to get something sticky off since it doesn't seem to stick. On top of that, plasti dip is inherent protection which is nice. I think the stuff is fantastic and it allows you to get a really clean presentation doing colors you'd never do otherwise.

This is mine, the grill, front bumper lower grill and scoops are dipped in matte black as are my mirrors. The b pillar is in this picture too, but I ended up peeling it off as I didn't spray evenly enough and the shiny black looks better in between the windows anyway. The wheels are the stock wheels that came with the car, just done up yellow. Just be sure to peel up the parts you don't want painted (for me this was the VW logo on the center caps of my wheels, the lugs, the valve stem and the little 'R' on my grill. Doing things like this hides the fact that it might as well be spray paint, because overspray makes whatever you are dipping look cheap as heck.
