As you can see, we get some pretty severe gridlock around here.

I might hate you just because of that commute.

I did this with my commute home yesterday in response to your post (8gb card, so only enough storage for 1 way), but it turns out that watching an hour of driving into the sun in fairly light rush hour traffic really isn't very interesting.

I am pretty sure VirtualDub can't edit out the overlapped bits automatically. If you know how to make it do that, I'd be pleasantly surprised though?

Here are the instructions to use vdub to do this manually, but since this is a process that would need to be repeated many times it would bet much faster if it could be automated.

I was about to ask the same thing. I've got a few good clips since installing the g1w, but uploading full 10 minute clips for a few seconds of action each seems dumb.

Very cool, definitely more traffic than I'm used to having to deal with, at least it cleared up there towards the end.

I just use Windows Movie Maker to throw together all the three minute clips into one big one, and you can edit out sections. Apparently I sit in my car for a minute or more sometimes when I start it before moving. Probably messing with my cellphone during that time, but makes for a boring video. WMM makes it easy to cut sections out, edit the start/end time, etc. I don't believe it would edit out the overlap sections automatically, but really having a second or so of overlap every three minutes isn't that bad. Plus it's free.

WMM also makes it really easy to strip the sound and speed things up 16x, which is my new favorite thing to do. Here is one another one of those, little bit better scenery this time.

A 1-1.5 hour commute? I'll stop complaining about my 12-15 minutes. And to think, I bitched pretty loudly when they moved the office and took my 8-9 minutes of back road driving to those unreasonable heights. I'm starting to look for a new position and remote positions are in the lead for me right now. No commute, no pants? Perfect.

As I noted, this was a fairly light traffic day. Party because I left the office later than normal, and partly because of random stars being properly aligned or something, who knows.

It gets lighter at the end because I live way the gently caress too far from town (thanks to the crash a few years back, I'm horribly upside down in my mortgage so I'm kind of stuck for now) and I simply drive out past where the traffic is typically.

It's 52 miles one way. Sucks, but that's life. My commute is why I drive a base model Fiesta to work instead of the M3 parked in the garage (or something else). 40mpg is a good thing.

On the other hand, starting a few months back, the company started helping me out quite a bit, and I now work from home 2 days per week. That saves me 220'ish miles on the car (including lunch drives, since I almost never take my lunch and eat in the office) and gives me 4-6 hours of time back per week.

One of these day's I'll get the house in a 'not' upside down condition, and start shopping for a place much closer to work.

On a good day 225 traffic takes me 30 minutes. And starting Monday I get to start working (read:have to) 9-6 instead of my current 7-4. I'm less that thrilled.

My first video compilation. I sound like a tool, have a laugh.

I shouldn't let these incidents get me angry, but they do.

In the first clip, a GMC Terrain cuts into my lane for no reason. Both the lane I am in and the lane the GMC can be used to travel straight across the intersection. After clearing the intersection while going straight there is not another turn for 1/4 of a mile. They could have easily changed lanes safely outside of the controlled area. Hell, after I made my right turn at the intersection, they would have had plenty of space. I noticed the GMC intruding just after I shifted to second gear and rolling into the accelerator. Perhaps I could not accelerate as fast as I do normally?

In the second clip, I make a bit of a mistake. After assessing the car that failed to signal as a car driving straight across the intersection, I began watching the car in the post office drop-off lane and the car in the rightmost opposing lane to determine if the intersection was safe to enter. With both those cars remaining stationary, I began my entry into the intersection just after the non-signaling car began a left turn. Had that car signaled their intent, I would have yielded to them initially before assessing the other two cars and making my entry. Still, my mistake for entering the intersection after their attempted turn.

The last clip was just infuriating. I usually don't bother yelling at other drivers, although I do sometimes yell to myself in the car. Bicyclists in Webster Groves are loving terrible. One minute they're vehicles, next they're pedestrians on the sidewalk, then back to being vehicles, stop signs don't apply to them, motorists should always yield to them. That's the mentality of far too many bicyclists in Webster Groves. I was watching the back of the bus to make my turn and barely caught sight of guy barreling through the intersection as I let out the clutch. He was a split second from becoming an unhappy hood ornament. Any, enjoy my weak and ineffectual "you too" comment.

Since I already have a cellphone mounted and pointed in the correct direction I tried out filming my daily commute. Of course, because of this it took twice as long. Enjoy French Canadian radio.

For whatever reason YouTube decided to crush my 6.5GB 1080p video into a 360p one, but I'm guessing they take specific formats for the higher resolution, I'll have to look into it.

Yeah, Youtube tends to make the lowest resolutions available immediately, followed by HD formats. It may take an hour or more for HD stuff to show up if it's a particularly large file.

It goes much, much quicker if you upload a low-profile mpeg 4 video at 30fps, that way it doesn't have to do any conversion.

Seconding this. If you're using WMM output to 1080p in movie quality. Do NOT use the stock YouTube converter as the quality is absolute poo poo. You still get a nice compact file for quick uploading.

Oh, I've done Boston downtown at 5:30pm on a weekday. I know what real poo poo is like. I just minutes ago talked to a recruiter about a job that was on the other side of town here and would have required a 45 minute commute. I didn't let her finish her pitch after that. I don't 'do' traffic.
I took my current job based on its location <5 miles from my house on a country road. Three months after I started they moved into town and doubled my commute to 15 minutes. I was not pleased.

So in a fit of boredom I watched a bunch of Russian dash-cam crash compilations.

I'm fairly sure that the Red - Red/Yellow - Green sequence was put into some document as a huge joke by a traffic engineer, and management accepted it as is and then wouldn't reverse the decision when the engineer came clean about the joke.

Every single video has at least one, and often multiple, crashes caused because every driver in Russia seems to think it's a pretty good idea to jump the light based on that yellow, while every driver in Russia also think's that it's a pretty good idea to blast through an intersection at full speed just as the light is turning red from green (or even within a few seconds after it turns red). Many collisions ensue as these two mindsets meet in the intersection.

Not quite, but I had to disassemble the car plug/step down converter the camera came with in order to wire my dashcam into a 12v source from the fuse box. I have the doors off the Jeep now and didn't want cables and other shiny things to attract the magpies.

Been meaning to upload an example of the SJ1000 action camera footage, this was from my commute home last month and is pretty representational of drivers around here. 90% of the footage I have is people failing to yield or failing to hold a lane.

In 1080p the quality is good enough that you can read numberplates, you should be able to see that at the end of the clip. I've got it hardwired to the bikes battery since the battery that came with the camera stopped holding a charge after about 3 months. You can probably hear the rattling, the hard case is not as snug as it could be so it lets the camera move around a bit.

My partner is now looking for a dash cam for her car but she really wants a rear facing camera as well, has anyone had any experience with dash cams with multiple cameras? All else fails we'll just get two G1W's and mount one facing out the rear window but it'd be nice to be able to just use a single unit.
