I was at a beach during a red tide once. It sucked. The wind coming off the ocean makes your throat itch. Good episode, early on I thought it was too much like the one about sound-stealing mushi in winter, then it turned out it was completely different. These mushi didn't seem to do much in the way of harm, they worked as a pretty good warning system for trouble, and that trouble was still around even though people thought it was okay. Even the side effect was incidental.

I'm pretty sure "Ah, that was pleasant" is going to be my reaction to every single episode so every few pages just pretend that I have posted that. Seriously, Mushishi is like the refreshing glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day of anime. Every episode is just so palate-cleansing and refreshing.

I don't know that I'd describe every chapter as "pleasant", but they are pretty much all great.

Holy poo poo, that was so good. It started weak, but it hit its stride and the final scene was absolutely incredible. This show's greatest strength is its ability to not only place the audience in with the characters, but place the characters in with one another so to demonstrate the common humanity that links all people.Paracelsus posted:Not being malevolent doesn't make them not dangerous, though. I've read the manga so I know what to expect in terms of tone, but I mean more along the lines of it being so good and consistent that it just cleanses the palate. When I say "pleasant" I don't mean happy or anything like that, just... a completely satisfying and self contained 23 minutes.

I liked watching the snail bird wriggle backwards to hide in the shell.  That scene at the end reminds me of (Season 1)the rainbow mushi flowing away into the sky. I've never been happier for a second season of anything. Now give me a second season of Mononoke, too, and make one of the episodes crossover with Mushishi (I don't know how it would work just make it happen).

Like, in ep 2 you can tell how Ginko is holding back on suggesting that the man and his child move back in with the village. Art and music porn aside, there is something compelling about the show's willingness to forego any kind of proselytization; I love how characters might only move inches in each story but still come out feeling fully fleshed out and making life altering decisions. It's good to have this show back

I like that at least so far there seems to be a decent amount of variation in the character designs. The only complaint I ever had with the first season was how similar a lot of characters looked.

Am I imagining things, or does the new series have way more close-ups with a solid white or color gradient background? They were there in the first season, but to me they seem to be more frequent, especially in the first episode.

So I forget what the deal is with what normal people know about mushi. Ginko refers to himself as a Mushishi to villagers, so that must mean people know and respect mushishi. But at the same time most people can't see Mushi and when something happens to make them see them they think they're having hallucinations. Is it just that people have a general idea that there are Mushi around?

Chemicals are dangerous and exotic etc. And they don't even realize they're surrounded by that stuff, because everything is chemicals actually.

Good episode. I enjoy a nice tragic Mushi-shi episode  As always though, a lot of the problem here was driven by A Dumb Kid Being A Dumb Kid, really. Though the fact that its driven by the shock of his sister dying in his care is understandable. I like the detail they included about the fact that he ended up losing a bunch of fingers and toes; I was wondering with as much as they kept going on about frostbite if they'd just go "WELL THE MUSHI PROTECTED HIM and he got off scottfree for being a weirdo", but nah. Could have gone much worse for him, like the show said. It's really great how this season is basically like the original show never ended; it completely picks up the reins and keeps going with the same level of quality and writing as previous. Everything is just fantastic. Episode two in particular had some really great and good looking bits.

Mushishi's director Hiroshi Nagahama did a panel at Sakuracon a couple days ago. The majority of the panel was watching a raw copy of episode 3 he brought with him, but he was also occasionally doing commentary as the episode went through. He mentioned that to help portray the otherworldliness of the Mushi, all Mushi on screen are hand drawn and hand animated. I thought that was a great touch. Another thing that came out of the short Q/A session after, the reason for English OPs is to try and keep (native) watchers from getting in a mood or forming an impression pre-episode.
