It wont be a true successor to the Bugle until John manages to introduce a news story by quoting song lyrics. Or quoting the Iron Sheikh's twitter account.

Of course, most gas stations can't keep UN resolutions from being passed, likely arm militia groups, and in general be run by a Bond villain. One of the things I loved most was the potential implication that John is more aware of global politics because he bothers to continue watching the BBC.

It's a tragedy John didn't get this show before the end of Silvio Berlusconi's reign. Excuse me, Burlesquepony. Actually thinking about all my favorite Bugle bits (the letter from the soldier invading Iowa at The Bugle's bidding is the best one, yes even though John & Andy didn't write it) it's a real shame HBO didn't just adapt The Bugle into a TV Show. Stick a webcam in Andy's shed, the graininess will be part of the charm.

I sit here this morning watching wall-to-wall coverage of the whole Donald Sterling mess and all I can think of is, HOW DARE YOU SAY I TAKE MONEY! I can't wait for Sunday night. I honestly feel more informed from watching this Monday morning than a half-week's worth of CNN.

I don't know how much talk behind the scenes there was with regards to Letterman moving and Stephen replacing him, but right now it seems like the alternative could've been Oliver taking over TCR and we'd have him doing the same thing 4 days a week. That, to me, is sadly better than what we have now. Obviously just the first show, but I was expecting more than just a network change when you have the might of HBO behind you.

John had REALLY great energy during the TDS summer hosting.

That, to me, is sadly better than what we have now. Colbert intentionally timed his contract end dates to coincide with Letterman's. It was always known he'd make a bid for the spot the minute Letterman retired, but of course nobody knew if he'd get it. Considering how long it takes to get a new show together and the uncertainty of every factor, it was probably just too risky to make plans around IF Letterman retires this year and IF Colbert gets his spot, stick around and we'll give you 11:30. Plus Oliver honestly might not want a 4x/week show (quadweekly?). Unlike Stewart and Colbert he's still an active standup and actor, and with that schedule he doesn't have time to record a half-hour podcast regularly as it is. The weekly format also frees him from the expectation that he'll keep mentioning a single story for as long as it's in the news - I'd be surprised if LWT mentions Sterling again this Sunday even though there's still a lot of press about it. TDS and Colbert can kind of run together day-to-day because they're stuck in a more incremental news cycle, but Oliver has an entire week to pick two or three main topics from, so each episode is going to feel a lot more distinct.

I like the weekly format. It keeps the content as fresh as possible without having to pull rabbits out of hats for slow news days. It also holds my interest as a viewer in a better way; I got tired of Colbert's schtick more quickly than I thought I would, and taking it from 4x to 1x/weekly makes it a treat to watch rather than, oh look, it's The Daily Show (which I'll watch the first five minutes of if I happen to have the tv on at 11).

I think the strongest argument against him taking Colbert's spot is that he's too similar to Stewart. Inarguably he has his own thing and his stint running TDS had its own feel, but it was still essentially The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight is so very TDS-esque. Without the benefit of being on a different station (with no censor restrictions), I'm afraid a Stewart and Oliver hour would feel like incredibly same-y until they branched out. Like a condensed version of the problems of The Late Show and The Late Late Show only just closer together. Colbert's show thrives because the extreme character he has so the satire makes even repeated stories okay. I know it sounds like unfortunate timing but I think getting onto HBO is creatively a better thing. I hope it thrives because I think he might have been in trouble in Colbert's slot. Especially if Colbert's audience follows him. And at least HBO isn't as comically cancel-happy as Comedy Central. I don't have any clue what kind of show could thrive behind TDS right now. It has to appeal to the TDS people, can sit opposite Colbert and do well, and maintain enough to prop up @Midnight. Maybe they should just rerun old TDS episodes from years gone by.

I was skeptical, but I really do think that this is the best of both worlds. While I think Oliver could easily carry a full hour, the chance to only do one show a week gives them the chance to take a longer view on many issues. Whereas The Daily Show basically functions as a replacement for the nightly news, Last Week Tonight is the 60 minutes weekend breather.

As a longtime Daily Show fan, it felt weird watching LWT when there'd be the big punchline to a segment like the show was going to commercial, and then no break came and they just moved onto the next topic. Not bad, just a little jarring from the "usual format".

More to the point, John was lampooning the State at large for having commissioned that advert whilst the thing it was advertising wasn't working. Like having an ad for the new Godzilla movie still claiming its coming mid-May when its on an indefinite delay. Something which the dude running the Ad Agency somehow admits to anyway given the way he's tries to distance them from the website. Its just... weird.

I just moved to Oregon and saw those commercials and they're strange but very, very Oregon. What's amazing is that the website is as much of a disaster as it is. As far as I can glean, they contracted with a recognized company for the website (Oracle) with a reasonable development timeline and it completely poo poo the bed. His outrage would be fine if the website worked, but as mentioned it's like the band on the Titanic was playing folk music instead of classical.
