Finding that just putting down random splotches of colour and making stuff is way more fun than planning what i'm going to do.

oh man I love the color on this; the sharp borders of opacity look like the model was carved from wood or something.

I'm 100% sure there's a passionate, articulate discussion to be had about commercial objects as art, but I doubt that discussion involves weirdly vicious ad hominem attacks.

For me, I almost never like using soft brushes (I can't tell if you have or not) and instead, I set pen pressure to adjust opacity/flow rate (photoshop here, but you should be able to apply the idea to almost any program) and then color pick like crazy (alt+click). Color pick from dark, paint a little lightly onto light, color pick from the color you made, paint a little lightly onto dark, repeat until it blends in the way you want it to. It also has the advantage of mixing colors for you naturally (though throwing in a little extra color before you start to blend can help make it pop).

Edit: vvv That's if you're color picking from a photo. Yeah, that'd work, but then again maybe color picking from a photo isn't a great idea in the first place. Can be good to try and hone your color matching skills by just practicing trying to get the same color as a photo (and I can see now from the thumbnail of Hog's picture, but your version seems to be lighter highlights on the leg and lighter shadows).

In terms of colour picking, a trick I learned somewhere was to use the Filter > Pixelate > Crystalize to get bigger areas to pick colours from so you don't end up having to pixel-hunt the shade you're looking for.

Just change the sample size of the Eyedropper tool to average out the color

loving BABIES jesus christ. I'm going to be drawing a lot of babies because they're impossible and I want to understand them. I'll also be drawing a lot of skulls for the same reason.

:3:
I'm aiming at getting into storyboarding as a career, so I'm working on this pseudo-comicky style with heavy linework and flat colours that can be churned out quickly (I'm interning at an illustration studio and learning a whole lot of useful stuff about storyboarding at the moment!) but realistic digital painting is still my main priority because I'm awful at it. Speaking of which:

Also, I cannot express how much I appreciate all the feedback that people have given me so far! :h: I'm sorry for not responding individually to comments but I've been flat-out for time, but I read every one and it's all been incredibly useful. I apologise for progressing so slowly / not at all and making so many mistakes; I promise that I'm taking all your critique into account, I'm a very slow learner, but your time and effort isn't going to waste. :shobon: I love you, Creative Convention!

I'm trying to get into editorial illustration, here's a piece I did based on this NYT article talking about how rich people wish they were richer.

Any feedback would be much appreciated, also, I wonder if there are any other illustrators here that would be into doing a thread where there's an article & people try to create a finished piece for it by the end of every week, and during the process they can get feedback to weed out the weaker ideas and such.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER EYES? :psypop:

:D From this angle it's basically supposed to be a triangle, with the iris a part of a circle in most cases, because you have a straight profile. Unless you don't have a straight profile, in which case you've messed up in a different place, but I'm pretty sure it's a straight profile, because I used to make the same mistake with eyes, until I had it pointed out to me.

I always have such a hard time drawing (and coloring!) hair, but after checking these entries by James Gurney I think I'm slooowly starting to get the hang of it.

Now if only there was also a tutorial for learning how to draw hairstyles that aren't solely for HUGE NERDS

I still need to narrow the whole thing down to a point where I can also apply it to more cartoony, simpler drawings.

I wanted to challenge myself so I picked a picture with weird lighting and posing. I also took Jewel's suggestions for blending (thanks for those).

I do have a more general question, though. I feel like I'm pretty good at reproducing photos or what's in front of me, but whenever I try to draw from imagination it turns out really bad. What's the best way to start drawing without reference? Is there any tutorial series or exercises that help or give some good basic principles?

edit: uncanny how I notice a bunch of things wrong with the picture AFTER I post it

Loomis is great for that, and his books are available free on the net. Though if you draw from reference enough you'll eventually get a good knowledge of anatomy.

If you mean drawing in general here's a nifty page (think it was linked in an earlier thread) with all kinds of tutorials for digital art http://www.floobynooby.com/ICG/artvalues.html

On the other hand, the fiery jizz monster is too trasparent, and the lines behind it are too well defined, but I guess you haven't gotten to it yet. That's all I have.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I don't have any "paint" laid down for the mist stuff yet. Right now all you see is the warm base that's under the entire image. The misty tendrils will be glowing green at some point.
