WTF am I reading?
One of my favorites from the last thread, the Japanese Aum Shinrikyo cult:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aum_Shinrikyo

Specifically, their time spent in the Australian outback:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjawarn_station
The mysterious seismic event makes this page really unnerving.

The cult used their time in Western Australia to plan the 1995 sarin gas attack in Tokyo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_subway_gas_attack

Something about this desolate area being so remote that nobody notices what a bunch of cultist terrorists are up to. The seismic event was probably a natural phenomenon like an asteroid that disintegrated before impact, but the nobody knows aspect just gets to me. Like, the fact that it's even possible that a cult could be working on WMDs is pretty bizarre to consider.

I read a pretty great article on how the cult thrived due to the culture in Japan following WW II, I wish I could remember who wrote it.

Speaking of potential nuclear tests conducted in secret in remote areas, I've always found this article interesting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vela_Incident

quote:

The Vela Incident — sometimes referred to as the South Atlantic Flash — was an unidentified "double flash" of light detected by an American Vela Hotel satellite on September 22, 1979, near the Prince Edward Islands off Antarctica, which many believe was of nuclear origin. The most widespread theory among those who believe the flash was of nuclear origin is that it resulted from a joint South African and Israeli nuclear test.[1][2][3] The topic remains highly disputed today.

Because it's "post your favorite" not "post your brand new, never before seen" and the old thread is long and the best can be curated and distilled in the first couple pages of this thread to get the ball rolling on articles that may not have been posted before.

Meet Leopold and Loeb

WIkipeda posted:

Nathan Freudenthal Leopold, Jr. (November 19, 1904 – August 29, 1971)[1] and Richard Albert Loeb (June 11, 1905 – January 28, 1936), more commonly known as "Leopold and Loeb", were two wealthy University of Chicago law students who kidnapped and murdered 13-year-old Robert "Bobby" Franks in 1924 in Chicago.[2]

The duo was motivated to murder Franks by their desire to commit a perfect crime.

A letter from Leopold posted:

"A superman ... is, on account of certain superior qualities inherent in him, exempted from the ordinary laws which govern men. He is not liable for anything he may do."

Leopold was a huge fan of Nietzsche, and the concept of the Ubermensch, which easily rubbed off on Loeb. They wanted to kidnap and murder a random boy while also collecting ransom from that boy's family. And naturally, they wanted to not get caught which shouldn't be a problem since they were supermen, right?

The horrific details of Bobby Franks' murder I will leave to the article, but spoilers: they hosed up royally. The key factor of their downfall was... Leopold himself:

quote:

Though Leopold went about his day to day routine quietly, Loeb involved himself in the police investigations as much as possible. He offered theories to reporters and whoever else would listen. He even went as far as to say "If I were to murder anybody, it would be such a cocky little son of a bitch as Bobby Franks".[citation needed]

For a while, the hunt for clues seemed hopeless. However, Detective Hugh Patrick Byrne, while searching for evidence, discovered a pair of eyeglasses near the body. Though common in prescription and frame, these glasses were equipped with an unusual hinge mechanism (patent 1,342,973[19]). In Chicago, only three people had purchased glasses with such a mechanism, one of whom was Nathan Leopold.[20] (Leopold's glasses are now in the Chicago History Museum.[21])

(A citation of him stealth-boasting was in mentioned in the crime encyclopedia I had when I was younger, and a lot of my links will be what I remember of that book)
The cops also found the destroyed typewriter L&L used to type up the ransom note; they had neglected to fully destroy the parts that easily matched it to the note.

The crime was sensational of its time, given the age, wealth, and motives of the two boys. Read the full article for the sordid details.

Leopold repented somewhat after Loeb died in a prison fight. He was paroled for good behavior and for volunteering to test malaria treatments and lived the remaineder of his life trying to clear Loeb's name (again, see article)

Ironically, upon his death, Leopold's corneas were donated. They never gave him luck, anyway. :haw:

During the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet the Colonia Dignidad served as a special torture center. In 1991, Chile’s National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation concluded “that a certain number of people apprehended by the DINA were really taken to Colonia Dignidad, held prisoner there for some time, and that some of them were subjected to torture, and that besides DINA agents, some of the residents there were involved in these actions.”[6]

This was reported in the March 1977 Amnesty International report, "disappeared prisoners in Chile".[7]

This is a picture of the S-IVB stage of Apollo 17, identical to the orbiting J002E3. Barring the unforeseen, it'll continue that semi-stable orbit that it began before many of us were born, and long after we're all dead.

Also, it'll show up twice as much as Halley's Comet. I was six when it last passed by earth, and I have a clear memory of watching it. This same comet has buzzed us every 74- 79 years, and boy did it ever gently caress with our ancestor's heads.

Occasionally, it may have also hosed with their lively-hoods:

That is, a fragment came down, blew up enough dust in the atmosphere to effect harvests, and led to a demand for imported food from far away places, such as Egypt and China. This helped spread disease-carrying rats and caused the first known outbreak of the bubonic plague. Evidence of it being from the comet comes from samples from Greenland, which shows the dust that settled around that time contained traces of stuff usually found in comets.

Halley's Comet will return in 2061, heralding another scary and unnerving thing - Claymation Mark Twain. The real Mark Twain was born on a year the comet was near earth, and died in 1910, the next time Halley's Comet visited. He saw it out. :unsmith:

Just to be clear, the plague wasn't riding through space on the comet right? It's just that it kicked up enough dust to make humans change how far they would travel, and some far off place had a disease that propagated. Am I paraphrasing that correctly?

This is just referring to the dust and not embedded fossilized plague stuff that originated from the comet, right?

Yes; the temporary climate changes affected migration patterns and the alimentary supply chain, which caused plague-carrying parasites to be carried into previously unaffected area.

Yeah. The comet fragment just hosed with growing crops and hunting game, which caused a demand for food from far away, which caused the already existing plague to find new places to infect.

The presence of comet dust just served to identify why so much dust was settling at that period, and the rest is connecting the dots. If it had been volcanic dust found in those layers, we'd look to possible links to volcano eruptions around that timeframe.

The unnerving part is that many ancient cultures considered a comet an omen, and in this one case it did bring woe. Also, that nifty comet I saw as a kid has the potential to gently caress up the environment far more efficiently and faster than we can (and Lord knows, we try).

Luke Magnotta. One of the grisliest killers in a long time, kills Chinese student, dismembers the corpse and sends out the limbs to various Canadian political parties. Guys like this, at least in the past, tend to escalate so it was amazing, and fortunate, that he was caught relatively soon after his first murder.

I think someone mentioned in the previous thread that he was a goon. True or not, it lead me to wonder if there were any other killers who frequented the forums.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cunanan
Andrew Cunanan seemed like a fairly successful and well adjusted gay man until he started to prostitute himself and appear in increasingly sadomasochistic pornography. The especially creepy touch about this guy isn't in mentioned in the article, but in a chilling piece of foreshadowing, he filled the space of his high school year book typically reserved for comments, memories and song lyrics with the quote from the court of Louis XV.

quote:

“…Apres Moi, Le Deluge…”
or
“…After Me, The Storm (or Flood)…”

He would go on a little killing spree, ultimately ending with the death of Fashion designer Gianni Versace (followed by suicide).

The level of crimes that both of these guys committed, with seemingly little hesitation, premeditation or real motive (well one of Cunanan's seemed to have a motive), really creeped me out. I'm a true crime buff but I legitimately found these guys to be chilling.

As for a creepy, recently captured, Serial Killer, we have Israel Keyes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Keyes

Israel is unique in having killed over a long span (starting in the Early 90s and only ending around two years ago) with little to no victim profile and almost no media attention. This is largely due to the fact that there weren't many connections made early on between his crimes, both due to the differing profiles of the victims and their distance geographically.

He also left behind a long and rambling suicide note.

To be a bit more accurate, that quote uses the word déluge, which is the French word for the biblical flood Noah built a boat for. So it's basically "After me, the end."

It's mentioned in the article, but it's doubly hosed up because you can find the video of him killing the guy, having sex with the body, and dismembering it. All to the tune of New Order's "True Faith".

On September 12, 1996, López mailed the device to Björk's residence in London, and filmed the final entry in his video diary, entitled "Last Day - Ricardo López". In the video, López paints his head in red, black and green greasepaint, shaves his head, and kills himself with a gun in his mouth next to a hand painted sign that reads "The best of me" (it is assumed that López intended on covering the sign with his blood and brain matter as a result of the gunshot) while Björk's song, "I Remember You", plays in the background. The videotape, which was still in López's camera as police discovered the body, continued to roll as López lay motionless in his apartment. Björk's relationship with Goldie ended a week before López mailed the device and killed himself.

Since August 20, 2007, several detached human feet have been discovered on the coasts of the Salish Sea in British Columbia (Canada) and Washington (United States). The feet belonged to five men, one woman, and three other people of unknown sex, the two left feet having been matched with two of the right feet. As of February 2012, only five feet of four people have been identified; it is not known to whom the rest of the feet belong. In addition, a hoax "foot" was planted on Vancouver Island.

I thought this had been solved. If memory serves, it was deduced that the feet came from suicides. Someone would take the plunge off a bridge somewhere, and get washed out to sea. The ankle joint would break away from the leg after a few days in the water, and then the ocean currents would take the feet back to shore.

The Isdal woman is the subject of an unsolved case involving an unidentified woman found dead at Isdalen Valley in Bergen, Norway on 29 November 1970. Public interest in the case remains significant.[1]
The woman was found in a part of Isdalen popularly known as "Death Valley", which lies in the direction towards Mount Ulriken. Next to the scene police found a burned-out passport. The autopsy showed that the woman had suffered blunt force trauma to the neck and had taken several sleeping pills before she died. The official police report concluded suicide, but this conclusion is highly controversial.

Basically, when a big enough star goes supernova, or hypernova, even, it will release a pulse of extremely energetic particles along its primary axis. We can see gamma ray bursts from other galaxies safely - hell, it's how we actually figure out how far away they are. But, if we had a star with the right orientation, pointing right at us, produce a gamma ray burst, we'd all be dead quick enough we couldn't literally see it coming until it was too late, not that we could actually DO anything about it, either. One of the big mass extinctions before the dinosaurs (The ordovician-silurian extinction event) could have been caused by a gamma ray burst.

Remember when you made bubbles as a kid there was always one that lasted way longer than the others? Now imagine that one bubble is the universe:

quote:

For decades, scientific models of our universe have included the possibility that it exists as a long-lived, but not completely stable, sector of space, which could potentially at some time be destroyed upon 'toppling' into a more stable vacuum state. The Standard Model of particle physics opens the possibility of calculating whether the universe's present state is likely to be stable or merely long-lived. A catastrophic bubble of "true vacuum" could theoretically occur at any time or place in the universe, which means (because the bubble of "true vacuum" will expand at the speed of light) the end of our false vacuum could occur at any time.

If the Standard Model is correct, the particles and forces we observe in our universe exist as they do because of underlying quantum fields. Quantum fields can have states of differing stability, including 'stable', 'unstable', or 'metastable' (meaning, long-lived but capable of being "toppled" in the right circumstances). If a more stable vacuum state were able to arise, then existing particles and forces would no longer arise as they presently do. Different particles or forces would arise from (and be shaped by) whatever new quantum states arose. The world we know depends upon these particles and forces, so if this happened, everything around us, from subatomic particles to galaxies, and all fundamental forces, would be reconstituted into new fundamental particles and forces and structures.

A hypothetical 'vacuum metastability' event would be theoretically possible if our universe was in fact part of a metastable (false) vacuum in the first place. A false vacuum is one that appears stable, and is stable within certain limits and conditions, but is capable of being disrupted and entering a different state which is more stable. If this were the case, a bubble of lower-energy vacuum could come to exist by chance or otherwise in our universe, and catalyze the conversion of our universe to a lower energy state in a volume expanding at nearly the speed of light, destroying all that we know without forewarning.

Remember when you made bubbles as a kid there was always one that lasted way longer than the others? Now imagine that one bubble is the universe:

On working on the theory:

quote:

The possibility that we are living in a false vacuum has never been a cheering one to contemplate. Vacuum decay is the ultimate ecological catastrophe; in the new vacuum there are new constants of nature; after vacuum decay, not only is life as we know it impossible, so is chemistry as we know it. However, one could always draw stoic comfort from the possibility that perhaps in the course of time the new vacuum would sustain, if not life as we know it, at least some structures capable of knowing joy. This possibility has now been eliminated.

I don't know, with the universe being as huge as it is, the sun turning into a red giant seems like a more immediate threat than this bubble ever reaching Earth. Hope this cheers you up :)

But we know the sun won't do that for like a billion years. Vacuum decay could happen at any moment, anywhere!

As could gamma ray bursts, asteroid impacts, supervolcanoes, etc. :(

I remember reading a sci fi story once, I can't remember the name offhand, where the world was spinning along just doing its thing when all of the sudden combustion just stopped working. The False Vacuum idea reminds me of that.

Yeah, my point is the anywhere part. If the observable universe is about 100 billion ly across, then the likelihood of it happening anywhere near us is pretty low. It would have to start within something like 10 000 ly radius for us to give a crap.

And posted a video of himself dismembering the poor dude and buttfucking what remained of the corpse.

Yeah. For all we know, it could be happening right now very, very far away.
