And anyway, the idea of actually having someone properly dressed for a desert apocalyptic hellscape is amusing. Do the party members do more in this game than the SNES one? I remember getting fairly far into that one before giving up and as far as I remember they basically did zip.

The main character and mechanic are pretty appropriately dressed? It helps that it is generally more of a wasteland than a desert.

"phphphphphphpht"? this is what you're going with?

The main character is always appropriately dressed. He even wears a tie in case he has to do business.

And brother, business is gonna be booming. :madmax:

Okay, calling the vote. Update...probably today or tomorrow, but I can't promise anything earlier than Saturday because of school stuff.

Rashid pulls out a victory, 37-32.

You say that like it was ever not booming. I don't know what Nina was worried about as far as income goes; the work is dangerous, but you'll never go hungry.

Well, in fairness, the best way to make money that I know of has nothing to do with shooting people. We'll see it in the next update but it involves gambling.

Kind of.

Update Eight: The Time Has Come, The Walrus Said, To Speak Of Many Things

Buckle in, folks. We've got a lot to do today. First up...

Outlaw

Hammer Hydra! Now that that's done, we stop by the Skill Master in East Zero.

For Iggy, we grab Unearth, which - well, does what it says, it brings underground foes into range, Regeneration, which heals 15 HP every turn for the cost of 10G each battle, Animal Instinct, which prevents battles with low-level foes, and Hyper Sniffer, which functions like a metal detector. Max gets Seek, which causes battles. Misha learns Short Circuit, which deals electric damage to machine enemies, Moonshine Bomb, which deals explosive damage to one enemy, and Immobilize, which inflicts shutdown on a machine or vehicle enemy, keeping them from acting. We could but don't pick up Decoy, which makes enemy target the user, or Screen, which makes enemies target Max no matter who uses it. Then, it's time for one last look around East Zero for anything interesting that I missed.

Man: Well, I'm not much of a shot. I'd probably miss every single target. This doesn't have any bullets in it, either.
: ...?
Man: I mean, they look so cool. C'mon, it's so boring to wear the same clothes as everyone else in town. You need to enjoy life to the fullest, you know what I'm saying? Spend some of that cash you got in the bank. You can't take it with you.

This guy will also tell us about his buddy who went to Beldaire to get a tank, and how he wished he was making hunter-level bank.

Man: I see... Y'know, I get more orders for coffins than beds, these days. Business is booming thanks to all the rookies who go west hoping to get rich. Well, I guess I'll have to customize a miniature coffin for you... Don't worry, I'll have it ready by the time they bring your body back.

The West really is way out of our league right now. We're only going for one thing.

There is never a reason to get First or Second Class - it just changes where you start in the train. No area in the train is sealed to Third Class passengers.

Rail Maid: Thank you very much! Your vehicle will be transported on the freight car. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Welcome to third class! At any point, we can find a conductor and talk to them.

Choosing the top option gets the ride to end. The bottom ends the conversation. The middle...

Attendant: Are you enjoying your ride on the Continental Railroad? I hope we can expand soon so we can offer travel to new destinations.

We make our way to the front of Third Class.

: ...?
: Oh, I'm sorry. My name is Catherine. Gluttony is my most favorite teddy bear. After I got on the train, I noticed he was missing. Gluttony... Oh Gluttony... Where are you, Gluttony...?

A woman comes running up.

: Mommy! Gluttony's gone!
Lady: Gluttony? ...Oh, your teddy bear? That's alright, dear. Mommy will just buy you a new one.
: No! I don't want a new one! I want my Gluttony!
Lady: Now that's enough, Catherine... Come now. We're going back to our sleeping compartment.
: No! Let me go! I have to find my Gluttony!

They walk off. We find McKinley in one of the seats.

: The idea of putting an entire town on a train is really something, but what's even more amazing is that they actually did it! The thought to connect the East and West via railroad goes way back. Supposedly, a young tunnel differ first proposed it. Some say the president of the Continental Railroad is his descendant. Right now, the system only has two stations, but they're extending the rails as we speak. In fact, they're in the middle of tunneling through a mountain. The problem is, there's only monsters and desert on the other side. I heard once the tunnel is done, they plan to hire hunters to get rid of all the monsters. But... I guess we'll have to wait and see. Well, that's about it, so I'll let you go. See ya around!

Once we're done there, we can head upstairs, where we find a bar.

I think it's time for a drink.

We can find a woman eating at one of the tables.

Probably not important. Instead of a jukebox, this bar has live music.

So instead of illegally downloading MP3s, we have perfectly legal live recordings! If we keep going, we can find the train's Hunter Office.

They're a bit out of our league, though, these outlaws. We can loot the conductors' compartments for some War-Torn Boots and Brass Knuckles, but there's not much of interest there. Nearby, however, we can find a very nice place.

The casino.

Blackjack is simple.

You place your bet, and if you win, you get double your money. The dealer will always stay on 17 or higher and will always hit until they hit 16 or higher.

I'm pretty sure the odds favor the house.

Though the game isn't rigged too much. And if you draw two aces in your starting hand...

You can split them and play two hands. I got really lucky here, so I went for the Double - you double your bet and draw one card.

It paid off, and I made quite a cool 200-odd G off a 30G bet. It helps that, as the board says, Blackjack pays 3 to 2.

See?

We move on to video poker.

Again, simple, and again, I feel the odds aren't in your favor. I ended up with three of a kind, so I got to play the bonus game! In the bonus game, you are presented with one card and four face-down cards. You want to pick a card that is higher than the visible one.

Win, and you double your winnings and get to play the game again if you want to try to keep doubling.

Lose and you lose all your winnings. This game is not a good moneymaker. Blackjack's probably better.

Slots aren't too hard. Bets are locked in - 10g per row, you can buy up to three rows for 30g, but your payout is always based on 10g.

The odds of making a profit are pretty good - even at 30G per spin, you still get 50G from cherries, and you have all rows and diagonals to score on. However, that's really slow, so it's still not a great moneymaker.

Roulette, well, it can make great cash, or not so great.

I don't feel the payout is worth the risk in roulette, but that's a personal decision. You can talk to the patrons and staff, by the way, they just don't have anything interesting to say. So let's go look at the last game.

Number Hunter is the best moneymaking tool in the entire game.

You can bet up to 999G, and when you're making money, you never want to bet anything less. You can select one of three difficulty levels. I am honestly not sure how the difficulty works - the rules of the game seem to mean that any variation in difficulty is actually not real but just a tendency towards numbers lower in the chain.

See, Number Hunter is a logic game. You input a series of numbers - never any repeats, ever - and it tells you how many are correct. a Hit means the number is in the right column. A Blow means that the number is in the wrong column but is in the final solution.

At level one, the payout isn't very good unless you win early, like this. You have five chances to get an answer.

Level 2 has better payout. I probably could have solved this one if I were thinking clearly about it, but I wasn't.

The real money, though, is in level 3. It still only costs your base bet to play, but any payout at all is massive profits. Even one win is enough to make up for a number of losses, and winning is not pure luck. So this is the game you want if you want to make some money. You'll see my funds when I started playing seriously.

And when I finished. I didn't savescum at all - Number Hunter just relies on some thought and skill most of the time. Luck plays a factor - you don't get enough guesses to always win. But you should win more often than you lose if you're any good at logic games. Now that I am rolling in cash for this part of the game, we head on to First Class.

: My mommy won't listen to me. I told her I need to look for Gluttony, but she just keeps saying that she'll buy me a new teddy bear... But I don't want another teddy bear; I want my Gluttony! Gluttony... Oh Gluttony... Where are you...? *sob* *sob*

Lady: Did you do something to my daughter!?
: No, Mommy! I was just telling him what happened!
Lady: Very well, dear. Now just calm down. It's not proper for a young lady to raise her voice like that. Come now. Let's be on our way.

They leave. We can scavenge a pair of Shock Absorbers from the First Class rooms. There's nothing worthwhile in Second Class, so it's time to end the ride.

Intercom: "Ladies and gentlemen, we will be arriving in Alice One in just a few moments. Please make sure you have all of your belongings before departing. Thank you for choosing the Continental Railroad. Have a nice day."

Hunter: Well, here's some advice from a fellow hunter... Beware of Crazy Wayne. Wayne is a drat good hunter, but he thinks he's the law. He mercilessly kills and hangs outlaws on street corners. Then he takes all their money and belongings for himself. His heinous acts have warranted him the name "Crazy" Wayne. But even though he's crazy, he's not to be taken lightly. He uses his rope as if it's alive, and he's good with his gun, too. If you find yourself going after the same target as him, it's best to just let it go, kid. I heard he's been chasing the same outlaw for the last couple of years. Keep that in mind while you're hunting here in the West.

Hunter: Well, have you heard about the outlaw known as Derringer Jack? As his name suggests, he packs a derringer, which is a very small handgun. He was once considered the strongest soldier in the West. I haven't heard anything about him in a long, long time. In fact, it wasn't until just recently that I found out he was an outlaw. It's strange, though. Why would someone want to put a bounty on his head...?

: ......
Homeless Guy: Before the Great Destruction, people lived in cardboard box houses. They were called CB houses for short. CB houses were easy to put up and take down. They were extremely light, and highly transportable. And, most importantly, they could withstand very strong winds.
: ......
Homeless Guy: Well, most CB houses were destroyed during the Great Destruction, only a handful still exist. I heard the military has been performing top secret experiments with CB house technology. If that technology were to fall into the wrong hands... *gulp*
: ......
Homeless Guy: Who am I? Oh, no one. Don't mind me.

: ......
Rich Old Man: I wanted to drive, but my family wouldn't let me. They say I'm getting too old, and I'm becoming a dangerous driver. But, if they don't like how I drive, they should stay off the sidewalk!
Rich Old Woman: Tch! He keeps rushing ahead. I just want to take my time and look around. Oh, bother! I wish he would slow down!

All we're here for, besides those folks in the terminal, is the bar. Everything else will wait until we're actually prepared for the West.

: That's not the point. Jus' think about it fer a minute... It don't matter how great yer sword is if ya can't get in range!
: Hmph. Bullets mean nothing if they miss their mark.
: What's that s'posed to mean?

Now we get to talk to both of them.

: Why can't you jest give me a straight answer?

: I see. Allow me to say that you have excellent taste in weaponry.

If we talk to him again...

: Monsieur, you are a hunter, I presume.

: Then, my sword shall protect you, young hunter.

We can then talk to Charlene.

: You're a hunter, ain't ya?

: Fine! Be that way! My gun puts his sword to shame. ...It's yer loss.
: Hm hm hm. Don't be so hard on him, mademoiselle.

Now we can talk to the other barflies. One of them tells us that the northern desert, the Sea of Sands, is full of wild busses. They used to be automated public transports, operated before the central computer system was damaged by the Great Destruction. Now, they're out of control. Sometimes, though, hunters can catch them.

: Unlike the East, there are still many areas that have yet to be explored. In fact, it's quite possible that technology from before the Great Destruction is just waiting to be found. ...Speaking of which, have you met Leon? He's a scientist who's researching the Great Destruction. He lives here, in Alice One. I recommend you talk to him. Now, I must be on my way. I wish you the best.

: ......?
Worker: Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about my buddy. He went missing around this same time last year. He came out here with me to make some money. He was always bragging to everyone he met about how much he had saved up.
: ......
Worker: Well, eventually he told the wrong people, and they stole it all. He was so embarrassed, he left town without saying goodbye to his friends. I guess he didn't even have enough money to take the train home, because the last time anyone saw him, he was walking toward the tunnel.
: ......
Worker: Well, I had to go to his house and tell his wife and kids what happened. I'll never forget the looks on their faces...

The lady at the bar hits on Max and warns us that we won't be able to handle the area unless we can beat the ghosts in Morgue Town. That's a pretty good judge of if you're ready for the West, really. She's also got advice on good hunting spots in the area, but we don't need that now.

Man: Well, I can tell you how! But, it'll cost ya... Say 5000G?

We pay the man.

Man: Now that's what I like to hear! Good hunters acquire as many vehicles as they can. That's why they make so much money! Now, listen closely... West of here is a trader camp. Go there and buy a Bus Stop Sign from the junk shop. The shopkeeper will tell you what to do after that. Good luck, kid!

Handy. Now, let's wet our whistles.

(Click here to watch the dancing.)

Another useless item! We head upstairs and stay in the Economy Room to get some Ice Armor, a protector that blocks cold damage. Then we use the Deluxe Suite to get a Safety Helmet for Rashid, plus some Royal Slippers, Royal Soap, a Royal Robe and a Royal Towel. Then, we teleport back to East Zero. As we enter, however...

Update Eight, Part 2: Of Shoes And Ships And Sealing Wax

Oops! Just a bit too long for one post.

(Click here to watch the cutscene!)

: Yes. I'm sure they're looking forward to our arrival.
: You mean our little present, right?
: Hahaha! That's right. We'll bring back some cold, hard cash this time.
: But, is there really that much cash in the casino?
: Hahaha! Of course. It's a long train ride... so that place will be filled with rich folks bored out of their minds. Besides, casinos are always rigged to rake in the dough. And, if there's nothing the safe, then we'll just rip off the passengers.
: ...Si.

We won't be taking the train again for a bit - we can't handle the Daltons right now. We head to the bar instead.

: I'm glad to see that you're in good health.
: Murasame... Am I the reason you're here?
: Perhaps... Perhaps not.
: Is it revenge you seek?
: Alas, my sword is still broken from our last duel. Now is not the time to settle the score.
: So, you've kept it...
: Yes. It serves as a reminder.
: ......
: Our duel will be postponed until I find a sword worthy of the challenge. Please wait until then.

Murasame leaves.

: ......

Turns out this was hiding behind the stairs! We head over to MC Hamir.

: Then, come to the right place, you did. But, it will be costing you. How much of the money can you be paying me?

And not 1G more or less. Don't let him swindle you!

: Woh, that is low price! Very low! I am being full of surprise! That is not enough. But me, I am the nice guy. I cannot say no. So, I will be accepting of your offer! But, I keep the money that you pay to me at advance.

We hand over the cash.

: OK, the be leaving the rest up on me. You have a Satcom, yes? Give to me your address. I contact you when I find the tank. I will see you when later comes!

We leave, and as I head to get gear for Rashid, I notice a BB Trooper hanging out. They're around now that we've taken out Mad Maxwell.

BB Trooper: of the towns we visit, but that is simply not true! We never pressure anyone into purchasing our protective services!

Rashid's geared up, so we take one final stop - the train terminal.

Rich Old Woman: I wonder where she went. The poor dear is probably looking for it right now.
: ......
Rich Old Woman: Oh my, you know the owner of this bear? Then, can you please return it to her? I hate for a little girl to be unhappy.

We get the Teddy Bear item. Be careful not to sell or destroy this! But now, it's off to Beldaire.

Beldaire is northeast, past this bridge where we get a new attack-all gun. This area can be annoying because its enemies include a few that are out of range of attacks, which we can't do anything about yet. You can't hurt them, so run from any enemies that can't be hit.

These can be found on foot near Beldaire. They're a female-only headgear, but pretty good.

Enemies near Beldaire

These guys are essentially harmless. You can find them in the upcoming dungeon, too.

Our first vehicle-type foe. Other than that, they're only notable for being a source of dogfood.

These guys are harmless, really.

These guys love to hang out of range. It's a huge pain in the rear end.

: Beldaire's big! That much is obvious. It was a small town back in the day, and it had a different name. Arthur Beldaire, the head of the city, grew up here. He used the fortune he made as a hunter to expand this place, and he renamed it with his surname. That's why money-grubbers are clamoring to be his apprentice. Anyway, I've gotta run. See ya around!

We poke around a bit.

Rich Daughter: Father should have gone with them.
Rich Son: Yeah, and I wish he just stayed over there and never came back.
Rich Daughter: Hey, get me the Continental Railroad for my next birthday!

Then it's off to the Hunter Office to check out the latest bounties. I'm kind of shocked that we haven't had a change in the target of the day yet, though.

While there, I notice my title's changed to Rich Kid. We steal some Earplugs from a nearby house and find the local Skill Master. I grab Foxhunt for Iggy, which lets him draw out-of-range foes into range, as well as Fire Breath. Max gets Disarm, which lets him prevent foes from blowing themselves up, and /RUN, which has an 80% chance when used of preventing a foe from fleeing. Misha gets Quick Fix I, to allow her to repair tanks in battle, and swaps Immobilize for Lockdown, which does the same thing except against all vehicle or machine targets. She also loses Cheer. I decide not to grab Scrape, which removes mushrooms from tanks, and can't get Shooting Star, Barrier or Headbutt for Iggy. I could grab Crack Shot or Bulldoze on Max, but don't. Crack Shot improves accuracy against certain foes and Bulldoze allows you to charge with your tank if a Spiked Fender is equipped. We can't get those quite yet. Then it's more exploring.

Man: Oh, that's good. I need to borrow a garden. My field has gotten so large that I can't handle the workload anymore. My relatives used to help me out, but now they all have their own fields.
: ...?
Man: Oh, "garden" is short for garden tractor. Every farmer has at least one garden. It isn't a difficult machine to use, but it can be dangerous. One time, I cut my hand replacing the blades. And up north, a garden flipped over and sliced open a young boy's leg. I think he's OK now, though.

We can head down that ramp to find the Beldaires' tank garage.

Mechanic: They aren't just for show; they're fully functional. But I'll tell ya, it's a pain having to take care of so many tanks!
: ......
Mechanic: Yeah, maintenance is OK, I guess. What I really want to do is work on engines. My buddy's lucky; he gets to work on C Units.

The others in the hangar are: O Toi la Vie, an IS-3, Tournesol, an M24 Chaffee, L'Ame des Poetes, a Crusader, Alleluia, a buggy like Sam, Chante le Vent, a Wirbelwind, Le Temps des Cerieses, a Firefly, Mourir d'Aimer, a KV-2, and three empty spaces. One of these has no sign, while the other two are Carl and Rosa's personal tanks - a Koenigestiger named La Vie en Rose and a Panther named La Fete des Fleurs. We leave and headi nto the mansion proper.

Most of the loot we get from the many guest rooms is useless - the Cat Tail and Rabbit Tail, some Big Medals and the Rabbit Ears (notable largely for belonging to someone named Pamela). We also get some Safety Boots, a Shock Absorber and a Bow Gun - a good weapon for Max - plus 3000G hidden behind paintings. I run out of space, so make a quick run back to Junkyard. On the way, I spot Hare Head.

I will, Hare Head! I also grab some food while in Junkyard.

Then it's back to Beldaire, where we get a Tile Pack M and chat with Sebastian.

: Ah, I apologize for not introducing myself sooner. My name is Sebastian. I am the butler here at the house of Beldaire. I am pleased to make your acquaintance.

Upstairs, we can find Carl's room.

: I'm Carl Beldaire, a mechanic. Have you talked to my sister? She's probably in her room.

If we talk to him again while Misha's with us...

: Hi, Max! Um, Misha is your mechanic, right?
: Right.
: Misha, I'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind. Is there something you think about when working on a vehicle?
: What, like something I focus on?
: Yeah.
: No, I don't really focus on anything in particular. I just try to be as careful as possible when I'm working on a vehicle.
: Yeah, me too! I'm pretty clumsy, so I tell myself not to screw up... I don't want anything to happen while my sister is driving her tank.
: Oh, I know. Totally! It's like, for a mechanic, tanks are...
The two are completely absorbed in conversation.
: ...Oops. I didn't realize it was so late. I'm sorry, Carl, but I have to go...
: Don't worry about it! I'm glad we had a chance to talk!
: Thanks, Carl. It was nice talking with you, too!

We can head next door to see Rosa.

: Max, right? Welcome to the city of Beldaire. Allow me to reintroduce myself. I'm Rosa Beldaire, a hunter. I simply adore tanks. That's why I chose this line of work. I'm not into hunting down monsters and criminals; I'd rather add to my tank collection, so try not to get in my way. I already owned the model you acquired last time we met, so I let you have it, but... When I see something I really want, I make no compromises. Well, I sincerely hope we never find ourselves in competition for a tank. *chuckle* Why am I getting worked up over something that won't happen? Anyway, it was nice seeing you again. Let's stay in touch.

If we talk to her again, we can talk about tanks. I am just going to collect these as best I can.

: Oh, hello, Max.

: "La Fete des Fleurs," a Panther. Carl operates this one. It's not quite as good as my "La Vie en Rose," but it is an elegant and reliable vehicle. "La Vie en Rose," a Koenigstiger. It's my tank of choice. It embodies both beauty and strength, as if it was made for me. "Chante le Vent," a Wirbelwind. In case you didn't know, its model name means "whirlwind". This tank is a must-have against airborne enemies. My adorable little "Tournesol," an M24 Chaffee. It's a light tank used mainly for reconnaissance. My beloved "Seul Sur Son Etoile," a Tiger. There are so many things I could say about it. Yes, it truly is my favorite model.

: Sam, huh? The Buggy has a light chassis, so ig you give it a powerful engine, you should be able to load it up with armor tiles. Demag, huh? The Demag resembles a truck and is used primarily for reconnaissance. Its novel design is more intriguing than its performance. Mosquito, huh? The Mosquito is small enough that it can be transported by air. It's more of an armored vehicle than a tank, really. I heard it was designed by a famous auto maker before the Great Destruction.

Some time in all this tank talk, we become friendly enough with Rosa that we can send her gifts. We also steal half a map from her - not a useful half, though. All it says is that the combination is 2...something. We grab a Remote Grenade from the guest room and go visit her father, the one and only Arthur Beldaire.

: Hmm... Are you by chance Eddy's son? If my memory serves me correctly, your name is... Max.

: Ah, just as I thought... What a pleasant surprise! I have known your father for a long time, and he's told memuch about you over the years. As a matter of fact, the last time we spoke, he was boasting that you were becoming quite a hunter. It seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. My daughter als odecided to follow in my footsteps and become a hunter. Perhaps the two of you will run into each other someday.

If we talk to him again...

: Hello, Max. I was just thinking of your father... Nowadays, he's considered an explorer, but it was not so long ago that his entire life revolved around hunting. He and his partner, Jack, were quite famous, you know. However, he retired soon after he married your mother. His decision surprised a good many people, but I'm sure he put a lot of thought into it. You see, every hunter must decide for himself the path he will follow. Your future is solely up to you, Max. I wish you success on your journey.

We steal his Cache Map, which tells us what we already knew - he keeps money behind his pictures. We also grab the Bomb Claw Memo, which tells us how to make one, along with the Toy Sword Memo (for the Evil Toy Sword) and the Beam Claw Memo. Back outside, Hare Head's back!

: If the fields won't produce any crops, then what will we eat?

We grab a Gas Mask from someone's fridge, then talk to them.

: ......
Old Woman: Oh, I don't mind at all. I haven't had much company since my idiot son left.
: ......
Old Woman: That idiot left for the West and hasn't been home in over 10 years. He said he was going to strike it rich making solar-powered vehicles. I have absolutely no idea where he's been all these years. He's probably dead, lying in a gutter somewhere. Idiot.

Then we finally reach it.

Maid: I mean... Welcome to the Renaming Service!

For a fee, they will rename tanks and party members.

Then it's off to the bar. We learn that the area's been hit hard by acid rain, grab the local music and spot Murasame.

: apparently I was wrong. They are far too occupied with their tanks. Nevertheless, there IS a monster here. I can barely contain myself. Hmhmhm... I should leave before I end up making trouble.

He does, but someone else appears.

: Oh, good day, sir.

: Hm... I don't recognize the name... That's strange. Very strange, indeed. Well, sir, I thank you for your help. Please excuse me.

He leaves. I'm good on food and drink, so we leave, too. The Economy Room at the local inn has a Healing Capsule, and I decide not to raid the towels of the Deluxe Room...this time. We ignore the Gift Shop - that'll be for later, this is getting long already and we have a dungeon left to do. The local equipment shop is a good stop for upgrades, though - especially for Iggy, who gets a sniper rifle strapped to his back to hit out-of-reach foes and some dog armor. We raid the tents for a Shock Absorber and Tile Pack, and to meet...this guy.

: You are interested in buying a map, yes? Ah! You are showing the spirit of a true hunter! Here is the map... The rest is up to you! I am wishing you luck!

He sells three maps - the Treasure Map for 500G, the Secret Map for 5000G and the Pirate Map for 8000G. We buy all of them. The Treasure Map directus to "behind the structure housing a mysterious device." The Secret Map points to "nestled between the tall peaks." The Pirate map says treasure "lies where the old shelter meets the two ports." If we talk to him again...

It doesn't have to be true.

: ...Oh, really? You are having much talent for hunting treasure, yes? Maybe you are a being the one who is worthy...
: To be telling the truth, I have the special map. Very rare it is! But, I will be selling it to you for a right price.

He will sell us the Dubious Map for 1000G.

: Wonderful! I am seeing the inspiration on you! Here you go. Be using it well!

It tells us to find treasure "in the northern corridor of the maze beneath the town of sinners." If we come back to his tent after this, Sodam has vanished. We head to the garage, where we meet Carl again.

: Shopping for parts? I needed to get some things, too. I prefer to see the parts first before I buy them. You know how it is! Thanks to my father, you can find lots of vehicle parts here in Beldaire. Anyway, I hope you find what you're looking for. Take care!

We upgrade the guns and C-Units on our tanks - now we're using the 90mm Long T, the 12.7mm Vulcan and the Legendary 99. Then it's time to leave!

We shove this on Sam and keep going to our new dungeon...

Enemies near the Ruins of a Fort

Not a problem at all.

These things can be a pain early, but once oyu get some anti-air, not so much. The Dog Gun is anti-air.

As we enter, we find Connie and Clyde talking, as usual.

(Click here to watch the cutscene.)

: Well, we did pick up some heat readings from it. But, I don't think anybody up there could handle that thing...

: True, true... But, do you think that hunter kid will be alright?

We head inwards and find a tank. With a guard.

BB Trooper: It's property of the Blueberry Army, and that means not you! ...Whoa whoa... I'M not going to fight you... We're pacifists. I mean, if we fought you and lost, you'd be able to take the tank. If we don't fight, we can't lose--and then you can't take the tank! See? There's no way around our brilliant strategy.

Dammit, he's right! We head back to some stairs and go in on foot.

Sadly, not a joke. These idiots are pushovers, and they lie in ambush on every floor. They can take a hit, but not deal one.

The elevator's broken right now. We start hunting, finding some Growgaine 3, a Tile Pack M, a Healing Drink, some Juice, Photo 3 (a picture of a woman with a message asking someone to return safely), a Miracle Key, a Big Medal, Photo 8 (a picture of a woman, addressed to someone named Isaac) and, finally...

However, that switch only gets the elevator to go up one floor. We can do that ourselves, and do.

After taking out these idiots, we grab a Biker Suit for Max, then find another switch.

Now we can reach the fourth floor.

I felt bad for them.

Really, guys?

Enemies of the Ruins of a Fort

Pushovers thanks to Iggy.

I never had any trouble. The Luxury Item is a good loot drop - it sells well.

They can take a hit. That's all.

As above.

Nice drops on this one though.

Floor five is pretty swank. We make our way inwards...and find our goal.

(Click here for the boss fight.)

: *sigh* How annoying... Soldiers don't come cheap nowadays, you know. I had to pay for them with cold, hard cash! ...What a waste that was. Hmph, all this thinking is giving me a headache. There will be time to worry about cost after I take care of you!
Bluebearer: ......

The Bluebearer wanders over, and Blueberry gets onto his back.

This outlaw is a pushover. The goons are meant to be the threat, but I got lucky - they never did anything. Blueberry himself...well, he can't hurt you.

He just yawns or drinks wine. I ended up wasting some cash throwing Disarm at him because I forgot what it did. Oops.

And the Bluebearer falls on him.

Colonel Blueberry's Crew

Our reward is the useless Fancy Map from his treasure room. It tells us that treasure awaits where we least expect it. We head back downstairs and grab the tank.

The Gepard is our first anti-air tank, able to equip SE weapons but only antiair main guns. Fortunately, we have one. It can hold two SE weapons and two Main Guns but that's a bit heavy right now. We head back to Beldaire to arm it, but...

: Mmmm... Smells good... Smells like... vehicles... lots and lots of vehicles...

: This is gonna be fun... Mwahahahaha!

We are not prepared to fight the Disassembler at all, so now we will not be entering Rosa's tank hangar for a while. We do, however, kit out the Gepard at the normal garage.

We have to upgrade the engine and it still ends up with only 300-odd SP, but it is very powerful. Max takes it, leaving Elie for Rashid. Back to the ruins.

The basement isn't much different, really.

Be sure to grab this before going in any side rooms. Otherwise, a bug activates that removes this item. In the side rooms, we get a 105mm Rifle which gets shoved on Sam, a Stirm Frame, a Stirm Slide and a Strange Blade. Heading further in, we get an Assault Frame, an Ingram Barrel, an Ingram Slide and a Dog Harness. All of these are for assembly.

Enemies in the Basement

They're basically just the same as any other turret.

We can sneak around the back of this room to get this!

But then we have to go approach the monster in the middle of the room.

(Click here for the boss fight.)

Tankasaurus, depending on who he targets, can be tough or easy. I got 'tough.' The strategy is simple - shoot him with Main Guns or SE weapons. He can fire his Sub Gun at the entire party for low damage.

He can bite a target for high damage and sometimes part damage.

But Iggy can shoot fire for...minor damage.

Oh, and Tankasaurus can trample for high damgae.

Last, he can shoot his tail missiles for even higher damage.

Once beaten, though, we can just head back via Teleport.

Tankasaurus

I actually got the drop here - the video is a rerecording on another save file, since the audio on the original got corrupted. We can turn this and Colonel Blueberry in now for a total of 25000G, dropping us back up at the 50000 level or so.

Update Nine: Back to the Grind

Today's a small update, largely because I spent most of my playtime grinding for Junk and XP.

That is the truth, Hare Head. There was only one name suggestion for the Gepard, and no paint votes, so...it keeps its normal paint job for now. The Gepard, as a note, is the Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard, a West German self-propelled anti-air platform of the 60s.

During the grind, which is all offscreen, I went back to Junkyard to sell some stuff and do inventory management, and I found that Rachel had left her room, as she sometimes does, to help tend bar.

: ......?
: *giggle* I always wanted to try that at least once!
: (Where's she learning these things?)

If we talk to her again...

: Welcome, Max. How can I help you today?
: Watch it, Rachel. That's my job.
: Er... Sorry, Dad. My mistake, Max. You should go talk to Dad, too.
: ......

And one last time...

: Have a seat! I'll be right with-- Oh, it's you, Max. Are you trying to look like a hunter by drinking at the bar?
: Rachel! Max is still a customer. Treat him with respect.
: S-Sorry, Dad...
: Have a seat, Mr. Max.
: *sigh*... No, that doesn't sound right at all.

I also decide, now that the Disassembler's appeared, that we need to switch mechanics. Kiriya's needed to get the full Disassembler event, so I might as well grind him up to speed now, so I don't have to when I'm ready to face that guy.

: Sweet, I knew you'd say that! I can finally kiss this boring life goodbye! It's my turn now, Misha.
: OK. Well, it was fun while it lasted, Max.

We'll get Misha back later. Now, one round of grinding later and we have the Junk we need.

The Stirm Pistol is a very good gun, and Max uses it immediately.

The Jamadhar is a dual-wield weapon for Rashid.

The G3A3 is an all-targeting gun. Still pretty weak - I don't really like the all-target hand weapons.

The Bomb Claw is about on par with our current weapons, but deals explosive damage.

The Ingram is a Charlene-exclusive gun that is otherwise identical to the G3A3. That done, I need a drink after all that grind.

It'll do. I head back to Beldaire, where I find that Hare Head is starting to repeat himself now, so we'll probably be seeing less of him. We head out from Beldaire, heading across the two bridges to the north and then turning west, to find a Trader Camp.

All but the gun are zero-weight items that can be attached to our tanks to spruce them up. Only the Spiked Fender has a real purpose - if it's on Max's tank, he can use one of the skills from Beldaire to ram foes for extra damage. I haven't bothered with that skill, however, so it's pure decoration.

Inside one of the tents, we can also find a Trader with information for us.

Trader: It had a yellow head, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. ...Anyway, it ran off before I could get ahold of myself. I haven't seen it since, but I can't help but wonder...

The Bomber Prince! He wanders the area nearby, so we need to find a good place to catch him.

That'll do. We use our Seek skill to just spam fights - it's faster than going in circles, and the 30G of Seek is worth the time.

(Click here to watch the boss fight.)

The Bomber Prince will run away if he gets a chance, so the first thing you want to do is stop that.

Perfect. All he does now is...well, I think he tries to explode.

But it has a failure chance, and I used Disarm on him to keep him from doing it a second time. Since his second use did absolutely nothing, I am pretty sure that it's a self-destruct. Anyway, this fight is absolutely laughable once you've locked him into it - he goes down very, very fast.

We head back to Beldaire to get our reward. While there, I learn that we have a new target of the week, finally!

Not that we're going to run into it, sadly. We get 9900G for taking out the Bomber Prince.

Outlaw

Now, we head back to where we fought him, but head further west.

We can find this near the Trader Camp by mashing X - it's found at random, and is a battle item. I haven't used it yet - I vaguely recall it having other uses.

The Crimson Shirt is a great armor upgrade for Max. Now, we head through the clear areas of the forest to find our next town: Torikami.

Monsters near Torikami

Not much to say about these guys.

These guys can be annoyingly dodgy, though.

Same with these. Anyway, we find McKinley right inside the gates.

: OK. Well, if you haven't noticed, Torikami's different from other towns. Supposedly, the people who built it wanted to replicate the lifestyle prior to the Great Destruction. But, um, I think they may have gotten a little carried away! The villagers are pretty good people, but outsiders aren't always welcomed. I'm not trying to be mean, but a lot of people talk about how weird they are. I guess in a way, they asked for it. But, who am I to judge? Well, I've gotta be going now. See you around!

The Hunter's Office is is one of the two garages outside the city proper, and it's already got a new target for us.

We also have four new Outlaws to go after.

We've also gotten the title Bio Trader thanks to my hunting and selling lots of vendor trash. We leave our tanks, since they can't enter Torikami - there's a fence that's too narrow for them to pass. Just outside the other local garage, we find an old man who tells us about the troubles of Torikami.

Old Man: We should hire a hunter to defeat Orochi!

Inside the town proper, we can learn more.

Woman: only daughter as a sacrifice... If we don't obey it, it threatened to place a terrible curse on us. What did we do to deserve this?

We can grab a Big Medal at the local equipment shop, but its gear is more important.

Mostly standard upgrades, but the Crimson Manzier returns to the 'block X damage before breaking' style of protector, rather than damage-type immunity, and the Dog Mortar can hit aerial foes, though not out-of-range land enemies like the Dog Gun that Iggy currently has. Still, there's a lot of aerial foes around here.

Plus, it's adorably tiny! We head to the local bar, which is...not the same style as any other bar we've seen, to say the least.

Now, let's talk to the (very few) patrons!

Old Man: Well, back then, the Earth's environment was getting worse and worse. In order to try and solve the problem, they created a super computer called "Noah." But unfortunately, Noah's solution was to wipe out the human race, since we were the cause of the problem. That event became known as the Great Destruction. Supposedly, Noah was destroyed by one of the survivors, a hunter. Regardless, the world that was lost can never be regained...
Bartender: That old man is senile! Don't listen to a word he says!
Old Man: *grumble grumble*

Huh! I wonder why he thinks the old guy's senile.

Let's check those pecs!

Hunter: Do my bulging pecs intimidate you? You might wanna know: there's a mountain southeast of here. Why don't you equip an AA cannon and take down some Mad Quackers?

Okay. The abs?

Hunter: My abs are as hard as steel! By the way, if you head northwest, you'll notice that the desert changes from red to yellow. Make sure you stay on the red side, because a lot of monsters are past there!

How about the thighs?

Hunter: Hahaha, like a cannon, huh? I'll let you in on a little secret... The best hunting spot is the mountain easy of here. Good luck, and have fun blasting your AA cannon!

Back outside, we can find an old man who has more info for us.

Old Man: There was a great battle there sometime in the past, and the soldiers who died are said to still roam the area because they can't rest in peace! How terrible!

A nearby old woman can tell us more about Orochi.

Old Woman: The stories say he can swallow a human whole!

We head up north, up a huge staircase of stones, to find a mansion.

Inside the shrine...

We can head inside the mansion itself to find more stuff.

It reads, "Treasure lies to the northwest of the tower veiled by sandstorms." In one of the rooms, we can find another map! Well, part of one.

"...at Junk Mountain..."

: To tell you the truth, we're in a difficult situation right now...
As Gorou explains, there is a cave called the "Snake's Den." Legend has it that a monster named "Orochi" is sleeping there, but supposedly that beast has awakened and is demanding a sacrifice.
: I never imagined an old tale like that would come true... One of our young men went to the Snake's Den to try and defeat it, but he returned in terrible condition... I can't allow anyone else to get hurt. I've even considered sacrificing my daughter Kaede as a last resort, but... Well, you understand.

: There IS a Hunter Office in our village, and I've offered as large a bounty as I can afford, but the problem is, because Orochi lives in an unexplored cave, it's difficult to confirm its existence.

If we talk to Gorou and Suzu again...

: We're hoping that a hunter will come along and defeat Orochi... We don't know what else to do.

We can also head to the next room to meet their daughter.

: I'm very sorry... As the village head's daughter, it's my responsibility to entertain visitors, but...
: ......
: I apologize for not introducing myself. My name is Kaede.
: ...I'm sorry. I don't feel like talking to anyone right now...

And we end our update with a pair of Big Medals stolen from the garden and the steps back to the village.

Update Ten: Snakes

We're starting today off by heading to the Snake's Den, north of Torikami.

There's a big lake in the first room, but nothing we need to worry about yet. Heading past it, we can get the Throwing Knife from the next room, a good anti-air ranged weapon. Max gets it, and Kiriya inherits the Stirm Pistol.

Heading deeper in, we can take a southern path to get this tank gun, which goes on Sam for now. He's a great mule, that buggy. Otherwise, it's a dead end. We head back and continue deeper into the cave.

This bridge is too narrow for us to cross in tanks, so we have to continue on foot.

We could go up here, right across the bridge, and fight Orochi immediately. This would be a very bad idea - he's a very damaging boss on foot, and most of the party would die. But how can we get our tanks across the bridge? While we ponder this, I will present the Bugle and the Old Coin - when used in battle, they have unique effects and are not used up.

(Click here for the full sound and fury of the bugle!)

Anyway...there's a ramp south of the Orochi hallway. If we head down that, we end up in a maze of cave tunnels. There's other ramps leading up and down, but there's only one we want, northwest of where we start.

Heading up that ramp leads to...

This Mr. TNT!

Mr. TNT: You a hunter...? You musta' stayed in school... I'd wanted... to go out ...with a bang.

There's only one option here. I mean, he's dying. Once we say yes, he gets up.

Mr. TNT: I pity da fool who stays in dis room. Get out fo' you get burned!

He explodes. If we go back in, after that...

We have a tunnel that leads right back to where we found the tank gun earlier! Now we can get in our tanks again.

Monsters of Snake's Den

These guys are pushovers, though it can be wise to leave them alive just to save some time, since they can wake up buried snakes.

These guys can in theory summon more ants, but it rarely works. Otherwise, quite simple.

These guys can be trouble. They hit hard - enough to hurt tanks! - and they cause Acid, which is like tank poison.

These guys hang around the Snake Charmers and are otherwise non-notable, save for the fact that they start out unharmable until they pop out, which they are more likely to do if the Snake Charmer is still alive.

We got acidified in the cave, so I took a brief trip back. Torikami, it turns out, has no repair shops or anything like that. It does, however, have a part shop I'd forgotten about.

These make for great upgrades, especially the engine. The Kuhli, without any modding, is even better than what we had. To get the acid fixed, though, we're going to have to head back to Junkyard. While there, we stop in to talk to Nina. We haven't said hello to our mom in a while, and it's nearly Mother's Day!

: It's a pleasure to see you again, ma'am.
: Nikolai's been saying you abandoned them to go waste your life.
: Uh... Well, my dad and sister are doing just fine. Why should I stay at home if there's nothing for me to do there?
: Well, I'm sure that Max can use your help. Being a hunter takes skill that you don't get working in a garage. I think this is a good experience for both of you.
: ...We won't let you down.
: Good luck.

Now, there's really only one way to get rid of acid.

A good, old-fashioned tank wash! And our dog will love it, even if the water might be a bit cold.

See? He and the tanks come out sparkling! Now, we're ready to head back to the cave!

(Click here for the boss fight!)

Orochi: No matter... I shall find a way to satisfy my hunger with you!

Orochi is a pretty tough fight. He's really simple, but he hits hard and more importantly, he can damage your parts through your SP.

He has to use Inhale, which does nothing, before he can use his nastiest attack. Each Inhale seems to give him two shots of that attack: Ice Breath.

Ice Breath hits everyone, and it has a good chance of damaging your parts. Occasionally, he will choose his single-target bite instead.

This does good damage and can also damage parts. Starting from here, durability modding may actually be worthwhile. I got a few parts damaged enough that I had to hop Kiriya out of his tank to fix things.

Quick Fix can't fully fix a part in one shot, but it gets things running again. It is pretty expensive, however! Fortunately, Kiriya was dodgy enough to avoid Orochi's ice breath while fixing stuff.

Orochi: I need more power... I will devour more from the village!

He dives into the water and flees.

: ...It ran away?

Now that we've beaten Orochi, we need repairs. Be sure, however, not to go out through the cave if you need this. You'll trigger an event that you're not ready for if you need repairs.

That's what teleporters are for! Once fixed up, we head back into the cave. All we need to do is go to the lake in the first room, and Orochi will pop up again. This is the event - you don't want to do this if you've got damaged parts, and it triggers no matter which direction you enter the room from.

(Click here to watch the boss fight.)

Orochi: I have no choice but to eradicate you here and now!

The fight is exactly the same as last time, but I do a bit better.

Orochi: ...Truly terrifying that now they are able to conquer even me.

Outlaw

He sinks into the lake, now truly dead. We head back to Torikami, but the news precedes us.

Man: Well, as a result of your actions, the village has been thrown into turmoil. But, to tell you the truth, I'm glad we're rid of that nuisance. Now, no one from the village will have to be sacrificed anymore. As long as we can still sell rice to the West, we'll be alright.

We get 10000G from taking out Orochi, and now there's a bunch of treasure lying around town that we couldn't get before. Most of it is stuff they sell in the shops, but hey, extras are cash money in sales. We get a Tiger Claw fro mthe weapon shop and Cowboy Boots from the item shop.

Old Man: Long ago, this land suffered a terrible drought, and the fields were in desperate need of water. So one day, the wealthiest farmer in the village, a man named Yaheiji, went to the lake and begged the water spirits to make the rain fall. He said he would give anything if they would end the dry spell. Soon after, the rain began to fall, filling the fields with water. The townspeople rejoiced. But Yaheiji did not. Because, you see, it was not the water spirits that answered his prayers, but Orochi, the dragon god that dwelled beneath the surface of the lake. And in return for the rain, Orochi demanded that Yaheiji sacrifice his only child. Orochi declared that if Yaheiji did not offer his daughter, the village would suffer an even greater drought than before. So, for the good of the village, and to honor her father, Yaheiji's daughter complied with the dragon god's demand. She entered the lake, never to be seen or heard from again/ And since then, every hundred years, Orochi has demanded a human sacrifice as payment for the rains. But, now that Orochi is dead, I guess we no longer have to worry about that. Hey, that reminds me, if you're going to be here for a while, you should stay at the Dragon Inn. It's a four-star hotel known for its customer service. There are four V.I.P. parking spots saved for guests such as yourself. I think you'll be quite pleased with the rooms and the amenities.

Well, the inn is half-decent, anyway. We can get a Crimson Manzier and and a Tile Pack M from the regular rooms, plus a Healing Drink from the kitchen.

I'm pretty sure there is, anyway!

Man: So, it is true... I was right! I'm going there to find this pot!

We loot a Tile Pack M and a Healing Drink from the gift shop, and a Ten-Gallon Hat from some house.

: ...?
Boy: You don't know what a TV is!? It's a box that shows people running around and fighting! If we had one in our house, I'd watch it all day long! Well, I'm off tothe fields to make some cash!

Man: It saddens me to think about all those who will starve to death in the coming year from the poisonous rain that now falls. As awful as it sounds, it would've been better if Kaede had been sacrificed.

You're an rear end in a top hat, dude.

Boy: Yeah, that's what I thought! I need money! I know, I'll sell my mountain. That should make me enough money. Well, if you'll excuse me, I have a mountain to sell.

He runs off. I have no idea what mountain he might want to sell, but...sure, kid, sure. We can grab some Battle Knuckles from the mansion before talking to Gorou and his family.

: Have you met our daughter yet? She's been waiting to thank you!

And, of course, we can head to the next room to talk to Kaede.

: I don't know how to thank you... If you don't mind, may I ask your name?

: Max... I'll never forget your kindness... Oh yes, my father asked me to give this to you...

We get the Evil Sword, a great upgrade for Rashid. Its description says it's cursed, but hey! There's no such thing as curses. Just monsters.

: If you're ever in the area again, please stop by and visit.

Now, if we head back to the Snake's Nest, we can find a guy waiting in the first room for us.

Hunter: Want to purchase some of the trinkets I found in the underground lake?

Hunter: Tee hee... Thanks! Come back soon, OK?

There are 16 items to buy, all for later assembly. The Handle, the Body Part, the Iguana Tooth, the Cement Slide, the Cement Barrel, the Large Jawbone, the Left Hand, the Right Hand, the Talon, the Small Hand, the Cylinder Piece, the Body Tube, the Large Backbone, the Cement Frame, the Fang and the Horn. We head back to Torikami so I can save, and I notice that Kaede is out raking leaves now.

: We collect the fallen leaves and burn them.

If we talk to her again...

: Hello, Max. Isn't it mesmerizing to watch leaves be consumed by a fire?

That is entirely possible!

Sadly, that isn't, but rest assured they will be put to good use.
