I bought the game yesterday, which caused yesterday to quickly disappear. Definitely fun, and I can see burning a lot of time on this. It is easily better than most greenlight games, and should be a lock for getting on steam. This game has to eventually make it big.

I spent a lot of time fumbling with figuring out how to effectively use both sides of conveyer belts. I've occasionally built a small extra extra section so that my belts can meet at a right angle rather than a curve, so that my resource is moved from the outside to the inside of the belt.

I've been good at automating red research, but have been lazy with green research so far, stocking the factories by hand. I think I need to spread my factories out more, and not be worried about keeping things compact.

Try this:

All splitters do is equally divide items between two belts, keeping them in the same lane. This trick just splits the belt into 2 and immediately merges the two so they are running on only one belt. Great way early on to increase capacity without circuits or chests/etc.

Without logistics robots, you can use Smart Inserters to only take certain things, so a chest with three outputs and one input can work. I've been pondering a setup with 'branches' to different mini factories, which then branch off to final products.

The tricky part is, without robots the only way to make the inserters stop is to have no more room. so you still have a big line of stuff.

You can actually do this very easily with every chest type.

Press the big red X on a chest, and you can close some of the slots. Doing this allows you to restrict how many stacks get added to a chest.

This game is absolutely blowing up... at least on the people I have subscribed to on Youtube. At least 4 people have posted videos in the last week or two playing the game. Hopefully this turns into a Banished-like event when it gets on Steam and it stays stuck at #1 for multiple weeks.

I restarted after someone posted a really amazing island start (one path off the island).

I finally managed to finish my first T3 automated science pack factory:

It is a huge mess, and my biggest problem right now is that i have iron plates being split off into multiple side paths. However splitters split 50% of the amount between each of the belts, which starves the much later belts that need iron plates.

What i really want is to be able to produce all the intermediatery products in a single area and have those items shipped to place where all those materials are put together.

This game brings out the absolute worst OCD in me.

Neat. Appreciate the tip. I definitely think it is something I will use. I got as as far as the mission where you get to the destroyed base and have to research train technology. Hoping to progress more tonight.

This game has real potential to go big for an indie title. I do feel like one they get it on steam it is going to explode. I already think this is a better game than banished.

I'd say yes.

I don't like how every game of this type has to have combat. I know you can turn it of but some of the later research apparently needs you to kill alien, so you can't just remove it completely. though I guess I could turn the enemy evolution off via the console to make it simpler.

They aggro when you attack them, but only the ones attached to that "complex". Go out in your jeep and find a singleton nest, ram it over and gun down the survivors. The nest is where the artifacts are, anyway.

I'm just starting out with this so I could be totally off, but couldn't you use a series of splitters to get more granular proportions?

So split the stream into A and B, each of which has 50%. Then split B into B1 and B2, each with 25% of the original. Then feed B1 back into A and you're at 75/25%. With a couple more stages you could control this down to single digit percentages.

Anyway, just wondering if something like that would work. Your idea of centralized distribution would probably be much cleaner though.

Only catch is that some of the most popular channels do the zero-editing, from the beginning Let's Play thing, and that is really not the way to showcase this game in a reasonable length video. Sips just released a video on the Yogscast channel that illustrates the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBh3Fn_25OQ

I know we're all conditioned to ignore youtube comments, but it's still kind of disheartening. It's not even "poo poo sucks, kill yourself" type comments, just "I do not like this game, please play something else", which actually feels more damning somehow. The guy did a bunch of videos of some "prison architect" game I'm not familiar with, so it's not like he's never shown building/management based games before. I just hope he does a little research before the next video and shows some reasonable small-scale automation of red/green vial production, so at least the set of his subscribers that would like this can see how it really works.

Funny how this game is way more effective at making me feel like a moron than any Braid/Portal/Swapper type of game. Mostly because I see some of the more elaborate setups people put together and think "why can't I figure that out". Sometimes I copy other people's effective designs in other "building" games, but something about Factorio makes me feel like I'd be regressing to my middle school cheat-code-using days if I did that here. The whole point seems to be, what can *I* figure out.

Does more labs increase the research speed?

And I did my first silly mistake, I figured each color of beakers went to different labs so I made an intricate network to feed to 2 sets of labs. It did not work that way :eng99:

As far as I can tell yes more labs do increase research speed, but only labs with all the necessary types of science packs will conduct research. So if you're researching something that needs red and green science packs, 6 labs will research faster than 4 if you have enough green and red packs for both, but if you only have enough green packs to keep 4 labs going then 2 of your labs aren't doing poo poo (and probably causing a backlog of red packs to build up because they won't use more red packs without some green packs too, in the same way a furnaces will not smelt and take in more metal if it doesn't have coal to go with it).

edit: unrelated but restarting for the millionth time, I've realized you can make mining drills output directly into furnaces which makes the early game a lot less of a pain in the rear end when you're waiting for burner drills to slowly mine everything and you have no conveyor belts

Just be aware that one burner miner can supply two furnaces, so you're only at half speed while direct connecting them.

You are a smart goon. That works, sadly it is ugly as hell. What i would really like is a tier 4 splitter, that lets you set a percentage.

I am debating if it is worth it to continue this game, the nearest iron ore aside from the little i have left on my island area is really really far away. Even then it is a tiny little patch, i haven't found anymore the further i go.

I saw a post about this on the forum the other day and the dev posted this:

"If you have the save, you can take the level-init.dat out of the savegame, rename it to blueprint.dat and put it under some name (directory) into the scenarios directory. You should be able than to play that as scenario."

I haven't tried it personally. I'm glad to see this game is still attracting new people because it's probably the best sandbox game I've ever played and it's come a long way since I got it ages ago. Should make the devs rich.

I'm probably guilty of this as well. I considered jumping straight into a save with a large base already humming along, and in retrospect I sort of wish I had. I think for future videos I'm going to keep recording paused the majority of the time, and only resume when I've reached a milestone or need to talk about what I'm working towards. As a viewer, is that something like what you're looking for?

Heavy oil is needed for lubricant but I think the only use for that is electric motors and since you can't make electric trains I've found no use for it in huge quantities. Solid fuel is actually pretty good since it's worth 3 times as much as coal in fuel value. Or you can just us the heavy and light oil instead of water in your steam engines.
