Since classes level up instead of characters, you can always switch Denam to something beefier. Warrior is a great choice if you have some points to spare for the auto-crit attack I can't remember the name of. The AI's aversion to Barricades is also useful. Back yourself up to a wall or corner, then place a barricade to force the enemy to attack you from the front. If nothing else, make sure Denam has the Field Alchemy skill.

Remember that not only do actions have a WT penalty, but moving has one too! This is why letting Canopus use all of his awesome vartan movement followed by a crossbow attack makes his next turn take ages. This is all on top of your class's base WT plus the character's equipment. My point is don't let the other guy get double turns on you too often in duel situations.

People keep saying that tech is underpowered, but I played through with a mostly-tech (all-tech, once I realized how completely goddamn useless Virgil is) party, and by the end the party was basically a Brotherhood of Steel cosplay event escorted by an army of killer robots and with ball lightning guns for everyone. And even before the endgame I was curbstomping most things pretty reliably.

Magic may be overpowered in Arcanum but tech is pretty :krad:

Try the Stringy Pete fight. Instead of going to complete the quest to lift his curse, attack Stringy Pete. He and his pirate skellies are level 50. If you win, you get your own pirate ship.

Tech is the best way to play. Magic is too easy, just choose the fireflash spell and everything dies.

Honestly I always found tech to be the way easier path to playing arcanum.

Early version of arcanum had what I assume was a bug that made throwing an explosive cost no action points. I recall clearing out the slum near the entrance to Tarant by gathering the ingredients to make enough molotovs to kill everything that aggro'd in a single turn.

My favourite is a bug that essentially got you infinite money by turning in a quest as many times as you want. Then I bought all the bullets and bullet ingredients I could, maxed out my firearms, and rapid-fired everything to death. Seriously, you are mad deadly with a pistol at the max level, firing like five times a second if not more.

When is a good time to start backtracking in Dust? I have the slide kick upgrade but not whatever one that lets you climb up the slimy vine looking things. Ideally I would like to have all the "exploration" abilities available to me before backtracking.

I think the Boost Jump is the last ability you get, from Everdawn Basin, but I think that's only used for a few upgrades - pretty sure once you get the double jump you're good for most things.

At a certain point the game will tell you that this is the final push and you might want to save before going on. At this point you have all the upgrades, so do it then.

Considering there isn't a movement upgrade in that area, don't even really bother waiting that long. Do the backtracking after chapter 4.

Been a while since I loaded it, but here's what I remember, some of it might be obvious:

Remember that uncovering tiles restores health and mana, so don't go nuts when exploring; try and conserve them. The reveal random tiles spell can be useful for this because it will get tiles you can't physically reach.

Don't kill level 1 poo poo needlessly; the petrify spell gives you bonus experience for your next kill, so you end up petrifying a level 1 guy then killing a monster the repeat.

Pay very, very close attention to the type of character you pick because (obviously) their strategies vary wildly. You want to choose your race accordingly for their benefits. For example, when using mages, I usually picked the race that would give you free mana potions when trashing stuff so I could spell spam tough enemies.

Trash stuff! Items are a resource you should use fully, so don't be afraid to trash stuff! You can do it during a fight to try and squeeze out an extra potion that can save your rear end since you'd probably die anyway, so TRASH IT ALL.

Avoid getting hit. Take advantage of the hit priority spell to finish off a monster without taking damage.(not always possible though) Use spells to get free hits in no matter what class you are.

Avoid healing if you can make it to the next level.

Get to know the different monsters; some are trash, some always have hit priority, some are really weak to physical/magic and some are really tough against physical/magic. Approach accordingly. Also, gently caress poison.

Singleplayer or Multiplayer?

Either way, the campaign is decent fun. It's an Age game, so economy is king. But there's way less micro managing stuff because workers don't have to make the entire trip back to a Town Center to drop resources.

I recommend starting with the Spanish or the British if you like European Civs, the Aztecs or Sioux if you like Native Americans, or the Japanese if you like Asians. Avoid Ottomans and Germans, they are Hard Mode. I was looking for a post I made in the Steam thread that went into detail re: every civ, but I can't find it. I can give you more specific info if you want.

Once you hit 20, 40, 60, etc. in Multiplayer Home Cities, every other Home City you create will start at that level.

Also, a lot of stuff from II doesn't apply to III. For example, Explorers are important because treasures boost your early game.

Risk of Rain:

- Start on Drizzle. When it says that it "doesn't save your progress", all it means is that you can't get high scores or unlock monster/item logs - you can still unlock the actual items and new characters. Kick it up to Storm once you've gotten some practice and unlocked some more items.

Don't bother going for the neutral ending on your first playthrough.

Feel free to skip any sidequests that sound boring or give you lovely rewards unless you're going for the neutral ending.

Str only gives a small damage boost to skills and mainly boosts phys attacks, even if you're going for a phys build on your MC you should prioritize Dex. Basically, if you're going phys or guns go with Dex, if you're going magic go Mag.

Prioritize getting the apps that let you and your demons have more skills, but feel free to play around. They're a fun system.

This is especially key if you're going for a Magic build. Being able to have one of each element AND some other cool moves made the game way more enjoyable for me. I kind of regret investing in the Compendium (that might be the Persona name for the thing that lets you recall demons) discount so early in the game. Everything is still so very expensive.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

I've just started to play this game but it feels that I missing something regarding how to build your character. I feel way too squishy when I'm in melee but if I focus on guns it seems that I'm simply plinking away on endless hordes of monsters. Am I missing something regarding what skills and/or attributes I should go for? I'm hardly a newcomer to the ARPG genre but it seems that I can't get a grip on the character building for this game.

Yeah, I didn't start springing for it until just before the ending split and that felt like about the right time. You definitely want the 50% discount to do endgame fusion if you don't buy the money DLC, though, it makes your life so much easier.

Oh, while I'm thinking about it, bought Wasteland 1 off of Gog during the sale. Anyone got anything?

Your companion Katarina can be used as a primary tank or as an off tank. Also you will spend quite a bit of time kiting to regen health, waiting for her to revive, or for cooldowns; especially in the beginning of the game, and on harder difficulties. If you haven't already, you should also grab the Blue Blood DLC (it's like $2) which will greatly improve Katarina's options for combat -- it makes life easier if you're soloing.

Make sure you learn how the rage system works; those little bubbles next to your skills on the skill tree don't do poo poo unless you press some key to expend rage to power up your skill to level 1/2/3, which goes off the next time you use that skill. I didn't figure that out for a while and was running around squishy, essentially crippling myself until I figured it out, and you become way more survivable after that when your life steal actually works finally.

e: thanks for the SMT4 stuff, gonna start it as soon as I can tear myself away from layton

There are a few new mechanics and they streamlined the resource gathering. You no longer mine stone. Depending on your civilization, you may have an extra resource called export. Basically, you build an embassy, choose an ally, and you set the export %, up to 10%. This makes your gathering take a slight hit but accumulates export faster. With export you can buy some upgrades and unit groups. Some civs have different mechanics. If you play a colonial civilization you may choose to secede from your parent country instead of upgrading to Age V. This will transform all your settlers into riflemen and add the ability to build Gatling guns. Choosing this option disables the ability to build settlers, so you better have 20K resources in store.

Military wise: walls and towers are worth bupkis. A group of about 20 units can and will get beyond those walls. Walls are only for delaying the enemy. My defense consists of a reasonable cavalry (about 20) formation that engages siege/artillery units and flanks the rest. You can buy mercenaries which are slightly stronger units from saloons/command posts. They cost cold and extra population and may/may not be worth it. Each civ has different mercs available. Damaged building are repaired by pressing the little hammer button on the UI once you select the damaged structure. You may want to bring along a priest or surgeon (if you got the cards) to heal between skirmishes and a settler to building closer to the enemy base.

The card system: this is a very important part of the game. As you win matches, you'll get points to purchase cards so you can build decks. These cards can be deployed once you earn enough experience by fighting, exploring, building, capturing trade posts, etc. I normally prefer upgrade cards rather than unit cards as units get killed but upgrades affect your units for the rest of the game. I don't know if there are any official servers still working but you might want to upgrade your city to lvl 50 as leveling normally would take a shitload of time. AI will adjust to your level anyway.

Exploring: the relic system of Age of Mythology has been expanded. You no longer get relics but instead will find treasures guarded by neutral enemies. These can range from extra resources, extra units (settlers, healers, explorers and animals) and major HP or speed upgrades. The most beneficial ones can be dangerous to get (8 pistoleros and such), your explorer or hero will keel over once he is reduced to 0 HPs and you'll have to rescue him or ransom him from your town center.

Trade posts: you can find neutral factions that will allow you to build trading posts on their territory. This will give you access to native units that do not count against the pop limit. They also provide special upgrades. There are other trading posts along a central route which will give you experience (or whichever resource you choose) every time the coach arrives (you can upgrade to a stagecoach and then to a train which speeds up the travel speed, they also provide LoS). If you build on all possible slots of that building type (all posts on the route or every native post), you can trigger a countdown for a trade monopoly victory.

AI: the computer is pretty retarded when they are your allies, they tend to require rescuing VERY often. They perform very ineffective attacks and then send them to the least ideal place. Against you however, they tend to fight to the bitter end. Even when you have razed half their base, they'll still build a crapload of artillery units and slowly whittle down your attacking force. Attrition is very high. If they start attacking your base, you better take them out quickly or they'll smother you with their corpses. I have lost many skirmishes simply because I'm being attacked at the same time I'm attacking.

As long as you set your first educated junior noble to work as a priest (who educates future junior nobles) you cant really mess up so much that you cant demolish everything and start again. Sad dudes generally go back to being mud hut tribals instead of leaving the map completely and will eventually rejoin you.
Start by building 4-5 noble houses and the maximum farmers they can support. It feels odd going straight into 5 palaces at the start but that how it do.
You can never have enough brickmakers. You think you have enough brickmakers? Build more.
Local boats across the river sometimes refuse to work. Destroy and rebuild the docks, cancel the statue/temple/etc they want to build with the giant rock and rebuild it until they suddenly realise what you meant and use the god drat boat already jesus it only took you idiots two hours.
Each level has a region map with export goods/send troops objectives on it, these are the secondary objectives of the level and not as optional as the game would suggest.
Some levels you can NOT see all the objectives at the start, don't do what I did and fulfill all the military objectives then delete all your military stuff assuming you can cruise through the remaining building objectives and win the game, chances are another military one will pop up five minutes after you demolished.
Food storage is good, excess food is good, don't trade it all away assuming its just excess. The Nile is fickle and some years you will come under expectations on food and if you don't have stores it could slow you down and make a boring hour waiting for next harvest.

I just got War of the Human Tanks, and this third level is destroying me. I have to basically do the Battleship thing on a combination tank/train, but my ranged guys' turns take a long time to come up. I keep on hitting the time limit, though I'm not certain if it's a real one or moves taken one. Would it be worth starting the campaign over to try different upgrades, and is there any general advice for the game?

I picked up Diablo 3 and the ROS expanion pack. There's nothing on the wiki. So far I figured out that there's little treasure sack carrying dudes that need to die before they escape with your free prizes. I bet there's more than that.

Be sure to turn on Elective Mode, in options. Lets you choose spells from every category, instead of being restricted to one group per slot.

You should also turn on advanced tooltips. The default ones tell next to nothing. Beyond that it's a very easy game to pick up. They've redone the difficulty so that you don't need to replay the story 3 times to hit the level cap. You can now freely swap between difficulty before any game and the last ones, torment 1-6, will unlock at level 60. Once you've cleared the plot you'll get access to adventure mode which is where you'll want to stay. You'll also be able to level any future characters from the get-go in adventure mode, so unlock that sucker. Normal is piss easy so I'd advise turning it up a few notches unless you want to sleep walk through the game. The Blizzard subforum on these very boards has a lot of info concerning deeper mechanics and individual classes, but feel free to post here as well if you want any specific advice.

Crafting things isn't really all that great until you get to Inferno Mode and you start crafting all of the endgame stuff, but take the time to level your blacksmith since you're gonna need him at level 10 by the end anyway.

For the Templar i always focused on giving him straight up Health,Armor and maybe some attack from his weapon since i usually have him set to tank everything.

Before the level cap you're probably better off selling than salvaging, once you hit L70 you'll want to build up some crafting materials though so you can fill in your shittiest slots with some better gear and use the Enchantress to re-roll stats on your gear.

For your companions they get extra benefit from their main stat and vitality, most other stats won't affect them too much (except the obvious like attack speed etc.)

So Templar just stack as much STR and VIT as possible and you should be fine, throw a ruby in a weapon you give him to improve the base damage as that's what the strength multiplier works off.

Also: If you salvage equipment with gems in it they're returned to your inventory (cheaper than using the Jewelcrafter's remove option if you don't want to use that piece of equipment again), this also applies if you remove the socket from the item with the Enchantress.

Crafted items, rares in particular, are actually pretty great now since they have useful stats 90% of the time. Very handy if you're not finding upgrades consistently.

Question about The Banner Saga: I read the wiki, and it says to only bother leveling your "main" party, since renown gets scarce, and your "side" characters tend to die and run off without warning.

Is there some way for me to know who my "main" party is? I thought I had it figured out, but they keep dying and disappearing. Gunnulf and Yrsa, for example.

I'm playing on easy, so it probably doesn't matter, but still, it's annoying to get a guy up to level 3, only to have him fall of a cliff while marching :(

Yeah, it's kind of a pointless tip because there really aren't any sacred characters. Rook, Alette, and Oddleif are about the only characters that are "sacred." I'd say there's no point in leveling anyone above 3. The higher tier gear is stupidly expensive and you need that money for food.
