Game is fun but laser turrets really did seem to trivialize things to an amazing degree and once you have them biters can't do poo poo. Slap down power, a few turrets and some walls and you can resist basically infinite biters. If you stick to guns and stuff instead you really do have to be careful and can easily get murdered. It also applies significantly more resource pressure and makes you have to do cool things like having to include an ammo car on your train that restocks outposts with things like bullets and land mines. With laser turrets it was literally slap down 5, wall them and their power pole in a box and ignore until you no longer need them there. At most you will need to set up some drones with repair thingies to keep the walls patched up. Also solar is for wimps . Let them come. Also dear god I should not be allowed to operate motor vehicles.

I hope they add vehicle modding in the future like with the power armor, like a cowcatcher that reduces damage taken from running things over.

Pornographic Memory posted:I've lost more cars than I care to admit to running into trees. Many, many trees. This game really needs roads that 'grip' the car's steering. You can steer off a road, but driving along it will autosteer for you so you don't swerve all over the gently caress and knock all your power pylons over each way, like I do. I wonder if that can be modded in?

I've found that rather than having a single bus, it's better to have two: one with basic material inputs (iron/copper plates, stone, bricks, plastic, steel) and one parallel to it carrying processed goods. Put room for about twelve factories between each bus, and it's much simpler to route in general.

That would certainly be good at making it more square shaped. I think that as you get better at layouts, you tend to move away from bussing products, and instead producing them where they are needed. Take plastic for example. The only thing you are likely to automate with it is advanced circuits. It doesn't make much sense to centrally bus plastic, expanding the width of your bus. Iron and copper plates are basically a lock for your bus, and should be on your fastest available belt. I would probably also bus the basic electronic circuit using a fast belt, since you use so god damned many of them once you get to tier 3 and beyond. I think that beyond those three a just-in-time production philosophy is very viable, where you put the needed factory on the spot. And who busses stone? Seriously.

Note to self: Do not run after your train excitedly because you might have set it up correctly, especially if it might swing around and splatter you.

Trying a game right now where there is zero easy access to coal. Figured it might be a fun challenge. There is coal on the map, but it requires me to go through a nest. What I do however have is a number of trees to chop down, and easy access to numerous oil wells. My goal has been to make a minimalist wood-powered setup as I rush to oil processing, so I can power everything via solid fuel. My tech list is going automation->steel processing->oil processing. I just handcrafted 50 green flasks, while I set my factory to make red flasks. Keeping things really small until I can get solid fuel coming, as handfeeding wood sucks.

A pretty cool way to do multiplayer in this would be to have players on separate maps, competing to fill an order of a certain number of components first, and only able to attack each other indirectly (launching asteroids at each other, or making the wildlife more aggressive, or stuff like that.)

Do my zoomed in screen shots from http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3629545&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=11#post429838812 help? The basic principle is mats move left to right in a tight main buss of belts. When you want to make something new you spit the mats belts you need for it and have the new branches move perpendicular to the main bus until you get above or below the main bus. The belts your branch cross get sent underground. Then you pull mats off this branch below or above the main bus and process them and add the result to the main bus in a new belt. *edit: if you use the one belt per mat and one lain left empty for merging like I do. It helps if you make sure that the lain that has the mat is always the same one, and that it is the side that your processing will happen on. So all my main bus travels left to right and has the mats on the bottom of each belt. So all my processing is done below the main bus. Hagop fucked around with this message at 15:13 on May 21, 2014 |

If you mean the iron belt in screen shot two, its two different underground sections. belt enter under under exit belt enter under exit. edit: Wrong!!!! Yes that is a mod To do it with out mods just push the steel belt one more over to the right and have it loop back into place after the circuit boards do. I admit I prefer to have my clusterfuck bases rather than clean efficiency driven ones. Makes the game more difficult for me. In other mew I finally have a train loop working to bring plastics from one side of my base to the other and return with circuit boards!

Is there a way to easily clearcut a forest early on? I got a map with iron, copper, and coal all right next to each other but they're all right in the middle of a jungle, so getting infrastructure around them is a pain in the rear end.

Shoot it up with your weapon of choice. Hover over a potential target (trees, in this case) and hold down C. In the case of shotguns and flamethrowers, just press space. They aren't too concerned about having targets.

Accumulators. They can seem pretty expensive at first, since getting battery production going takes quite a bit of effort, but after that you'll be laughing.
