that's a really dumb explanation. why wouldn't publishers want every school system in the country to be forced to buy a whole new set of texts years before their current adoption schedule is done?

So looking at all the Common Core poo poo in this thread it looks like its just doing two things:

-Teaching kids to add/subtract by breaking the numbers apart so they're easier to manage
-Introducing equations/algebra earlier

Is there something else I'm missing because if that's all this poo poo is then why didn't we do it years ago?

the problem isn't that students aren't getting it. the problem is that parents feel inadequate about having to learn a new method of doing something that is otherwise trivial, and it makes them feel dumb.

the war against common core is entirely about the egos of parents

because you get the answer wrong for not showing your work

x-y graphs are easy just keep the 3,4, 7 triangle math in your head.

you get penalized for not showing work even though the answer is right.

Because parents would rather have their kids stuck at the same level they were; if they don't understand it it must be wrong.

You also see a lot of common core opposition coming out of tea party groups who want to use it to advance the idea that there is an imminent socialist takeover of America.

It insults the idea that we are not number one and parents who don't give a poo poo about their kids' future in STEM fields would rather have them dig ditches and flip burgers or something. Ironic because at some point they will be relying on said kids for support once social security runs out and/or is eviscerated again.

Common Core standards have very little to do with this type of math curriculum but basically everyone just takes everything they're unhappy about with the current state of American education and puts it all in a box labeled "Common Core" so they can write it all off easily.

I know why FOIL works because I memorized it, and then, through the power of not being a complete idiot, I had noticed a pattern play out by the time I had been forced to use it a few times.

People have the wrong idea with math. If it's not based on proofs then the first thing to do is memorize, memorize, memorize. Even then, you want to memorize the important theorems before you understand how they work.

You're never going to understand a process if you can't even try to think about why it works without struggling to remember what the next step is.

the fact that you think this poo poo is so complicated that teachers and textbooks both never bothered to explain it only proves that you had a poo poo education
i dont even mean that as a jibe it simply is that you had a poo poo education
and now instead of simply adhering more to standards your education sadly wasnt on par with that were phased out in favor of switching everything to word problems youre doubling down and advocating this trash which takes a whole lot of time out of the school year shifts proficiency testing focus to things that are ultimately just a phase of insular terminoloogy and basically a huge fuckup

Ive been paying for my degrees at every step of the way simply by working multiple jobs and making smart use of grant writing to get funding that doesn't need to be paid back.

If you're legit having issues with college funding pm me and I can send you some grant writing stuff; honestly there is a LOT of free money laying around that doesn't get used especially by undergrads that being in grant form does not incur debt.
