The real problem is that gameplay wise the game is basically X2: Frontier all over again. The older X series games had a lot of crucial stuff missing on both the gameplay and functionality end of things. Each release made the game more user friendly and added more stuff that people like the series for in.

I just want to go ahead and say that X2 was my favorite, and I was immensely disappointed by the design designs in the X3 series, so X Rebirth being a smouldering turd is very disappointing.

I'm giving AP a go with only the bonus pack to see if I can get some of the achivements and it occurs to me that I don't really know how to pilot anything larger than an M3. I steer corvettes like they're big fighters and I don't think that works so well. Well, I suppose it does for the Springblossom, my favourite ship from Terran Conflict, but I took the Argon start and the Terrans hate me so I don't know how I'll ever get one.

M6es (at least some of them) can be flown straight up like an M3++, it's only when you start veering into M7/M1/M2 territory that you need to do things differently and learn to broadside.

A common trap for M6s is to load them up with the best weaponry possible for their class, but unless you've got one of the supercorvettes like the Springblossom, their reactor generally won't be able to handle it. I find that the best way to use an M6 as your personal ship is to load it with light weapons like PACs and use it as an anti-fighter gunboat, with some AI wingmen as escort. Again, unless you're in a Springblossom, you're rarely going to be able to punch above your weight in a corvette.

This is good advice. When I'm loading up a non-Terran M6, the heavy guns go up front and I just slap PACs in the turrets for M4/M5 harrassment and missile defence. Loading up on HEPTs in all turrets is a good way to wind up barely able to fire.

I just found a thing on X Rebirth.

I come out of one of the highways near Wrecksville to find:

Just a huge loving fleet of Raiders. I decided to tag along behind them because they were leaving Wrecksville, so I slipped in behind them and just followed. Then I was pressing buttons because I'd forgotten the hotkeys and lobbed a set of missiles at them, so they promptly turned on me, chased me back into the stations and destroyed me. :stare:

Note that Plasma Burst Generators are ridiculously strong in AP for some reason, having lower energy drainage than even PACs and dealing off-the-wall broken damage at the right range. Go for an M6 that can load like 8 of those in the front and you will demolish anything that isn't an M1/M2. Just be extremely careful with them in populated sectors. They're pretty much the reason pirates are such a sizable threat in AP.

I was flying a Centaur loaded with 8 PBGs before I got my terran rep up enough to buy/equip a Springblossom. The centaur actually killed things way faster than my 8 M/AM launcher springblossom (although at 300% the speed I decided to stick with the springy)

Yeah, same reason Paranid shockwave guns were terrifyingly overpowered in X2 (before they were made capital-only guns in X3+). Because it's not a regular projectile, every moment the flame/shockwave is passing through the target, it's doing damage. PSGs scale dramatically in power when used against larger ships for this reason, though PBGs have a short enough range to mitigate that effect somewhat. It's also really easy to accidentally hack off system security if you use either in a crowded sector :supaburn:

x rebirth's stations would look more impressive if they had gone back to the same docking animations (and thus station interiors) from x:btf. I have no idea why that was removed, but I really miss it. The argnu and wheat farms were pretty cool to visit.

I really miss the original X:BTF docking stuff too, it added another layer of immersion although the station interiors often seemed larger from within than they were without. They were also often a source of hidden crates if you poked around a bit.

X2 was my favorite for sure, I've had some real trouble getting in to X3 for some reason. Mostly I can't stand the cockpit being gone and I miss the little things like actually flying inside a station to dock. I know there are cockpit mods for x3 but all the ones I have tried seem really poor quality (hud elements not lining up or being squashed), is there one for AP that is good?

I guess I really just need to get used to the way X3 if I want to enjoy it.

X3:AP is my favorite. Yeah, it misses some of the flavor stuff (cockpits you could get from mods if you really want) from X and X2, but I feel it's the most polished and content-rich game in the series by far.

Maybe I just never really adjusted to the controls, but fiddling with the mouse in X3 irritates the living poo poo out of me. I feel like the lack of cockpits also dampens the sense of ship progression as well. Climbing into a battleship for the first time and seeing this giant bridge in front of you was pretty awesome. In X3 it's just "ok I move slower now, awesome"

I have got to say, I have been messing around with the voice commands and they are really awesome. Just being able to say what I want instead of remembering a hotkey is really nice and it's really simple to add new macros.

I went ahead and grabbed the cockpit mod in the OP and it seems like they fixed it, it looks pretty nice now. Honestly I'm just having a blast setting up all these voice macros I haven't even really started playing the game yet.

On reflection, sod playing without mods. It's been something like a year since I last played so I'm not sure what's still good and what's not being updated any more, but I'll find a way I suppose. XRM looks neat but I'm not sure if it's one of those "rebalance" mods that's more of a "make everything a pain in the rear end" mod.

But for some reason when i'm trying this now i automatically go into the bridge of the carrier instead. I have no idea how i managed staying in the fighter back in the day. Any ideas?

Are you looking for links to the actual mods or mod suggestions? I just reinstalled AP recently and downloaded like two dozen mods/scripts that I always use and I think the links in the Egosoft scripts/mods thread still worked for almost everything, with the exception of like one or two scripts/libraries. It's actually pretty impressive given that some of them haven't been updated in like 4-5 years.

Suggestions mainly, though links to for any obscure ones wouldn't hurt. Last playthrough I used most of the main ones (EST, CAG, CODEA, MARS, etc.) but that was before Rebirth came out. I've seen a bunch of mods mentioned since then so I'm wondering what mods people like to play with that aren't in the OP. I ask about a list mostly because I am lazy.

Honestly between the main list and the additional posts with suggestions underneath it, they pretty much cover all the "good" ones. The only major one that's not on there is XRM, but since that's an overhaul mod it's kind of hard to give a blanket recommendation on it. Also 'OK Traders' has taken over for EST for me as my go-to trading script. It's way more efficient/effective than EST seems to be, to the point where it almost feels like cheating because my traders simply go and start constantly trading rather than sitting around on Standby... and taking a dozen hours to level up.

Other than that the same saying holds true for AP now as it did years ago: Play the game and then when something bothers you, get a mod/script to fix it. I can upload my folder of 30+ scripts/mods that I use if people don't feel like tracking everything down.

I do like what to see what the best mods are for just fixing the base game since there's no unofficial compilation patch like the Bethesda games. Ex. The Bounce mod for reducing ship collisions.

Some memorial day stuff got in the way, but here's my collection of stuff:

X3 AP Scripts

I think most of it is already in the OP, but together I consider this a pretty solid X3 AP+ experience that you can probably use to figure out what other mods/scripts you want. Almost everything in here either works in the background or is optional and has to be "turned on" in one way or another so a new player isn't suddenly bombarded by a dozen new mechanics. For example both OK Traders and EST is included, so it's up to you to try and see which one you like better. The stuff with asterisks next to it are libraries that at least one mod/script needs in order to work, so just install all of those no matter which mods you're picking just to be safe. Full list and brief description of the stuff inside:

  • 500km_Comm_Range_AP - Pretty self-explanatory. QoL script so you don't have to fly across giant sectors just to talk to a station.
  • AP.Libraries_r2.2*** - AP Libraries. Needed for some scripts.
  • Basic_Salary_X3TC_V3103 - Will show you how much money you've spent on pilots. Part of CODEA, and probably a good idea to turn it off until you're actually using CODEA since its set to send you a message every hour by default.
  • Befehlsbibliothek_X3TC_V3804*** - Libraries needed for Lucike's scripts.
  • BounceV1.7-modded-AP-vanilla - Makes your ships less stupid about simply smashing into poo poo. You have to manually enable this in the game. Options -> Control -> Interface. Set a hotkey for 'Enable Bounce' and press it once to activate. It'll stay on from then on.
  • CAG_X3TC_V3406 - The popular station management script. Lets you assign a ship to transport resources/products from a station so you don't have to deal with it.
  • CheatCollectionPackageAP-V1.62-18.12.2011 - Cheat menu. Lets you do all kinds of stuff and will be useful to you at some point whether you actually cheat or not.
  • CLS_X3TC_V3405 - Commodity Logistics Software. Similar to CAG, helps you coordinate your stations' wares so that your ships are going about supplying them efficiently.
  • Complex_Cleaner_4.09 - Building complexes is a huge pain in the rear end in the vanilla game. There are many mods/scripts that make it easier and this is the one I use. Crunches everything into a huge Borg-like cube. Get something else if you want pretty looking super complexes, but I've found this is by far the quickest/easiest if you don't mind there being a huge Borg-like cube in the sector instead.
  • Detector_v1.17 - Gives a little ping whenever you're in a sector with an abandoned ship and lets you find it by playing a simple hot-or-cold game (you point your ship in a direction and it'll periodically tell you) instead of having to either look abandoned ships up online or accidentally stumbling into one and not realizing it.
  • Dockwarenmanager_X3TC_V3107 - Add or remove wares to Docks and PHQ. I think this actually comes pre-installed with Plugin Manager.
  • EST_X3TC_V3404 - EST, the popular Trader script. Assign ships to trade for you and they'll slowly level up as they go. Alternative to OK Traders.
  • Gal_ex_1.9.8.12 and Gal_ex_spawn_mod0 - Assign a ship to go explore the galaxy for you. Alternative to the popular Universe Explorers mod. The spawn_mod portion lets your explorer ships simply spawn advanced satellites for themselves instead of having to go out of their way to buy them, although you still get charged. Universe Explorers is a bit more robust IIRC, but this gets the job done.
  • ImprovedRaces2.0-V1.08-6.5.2012 - Makes the galaxy feel more alive as races will have active invasions into border sectors rather than just kind of putt-putting around. Starts off by default and I recommend getting a feel for the game before turning some/most of it on.
  • JSONparserlibrary-V1.1-05.09.2010*** - Another library, required, etc etc.
  • Marine_Repairs-V2.05a-2013-04-24 - Marines in a ship/station will automatically repair that ship/station's hull. Marines' mechanical and engineering skill improves repair speed.
  • mars-tc-ap_v5.26 - MARS. Turrets used to be awful and miss every shot. AP has more or less fixed them being completely awful, but MARS still has its uses, and can also let you use Fighter Drones to automatically sweep up a battlefield and collect all the leftover loot.
  • Militaertransport_X3TC_V3302 - Military transport to transfer pilots. Mostly used for CODEA.
  • Moskito_X3TC_V3202 - Mosquito missile defense. Will try to shoot down incoming missiles with cheap, fast mosquito missiles as long as you have some in your hold and have the system turned on in your ship's command console.
  • NPCBailingAddon-V1.7.8-21.09.2010 - Ships in AI fights (as opposed to only ships that you're engaging) will sometimes bail. Can be configured to allow bailing of any class of ship. Takes some configuring so that there aren't just dozens of abandoned ships in every sector. I believe this gives an error that it's for TC only, but you can ignore that. Just install it anyway and it'll work fine.
  • numeric_ranks_tc - Each relation rank will have a number next to it now so you can see exactly what it means to be an Argon Federation Helper/Knight/Whatever.
  • OKTraders1_6_2 - Alternative to EST. Much simpler to set up and use, and seems to be much more active than EST traders. Can tell traders to buy/upgrade equipment as they go and to prioritize stalled stations to help out the game's economy get going.
  • Personaltransporter_X3TC_V3401 - Personnel transport. Used by CODEA.
  • ring_of_fire-tc - Lets you deploy laser towers in a circle anywhere you want to act as defense. Automatically orients around gates, and turns lasertowers into stealth lasertowers if you have the microchips for it.
  • SalvageClaimSoftware-V1.21-20.01.2010 - Adds a piece of equipment that lets you salvage abandoned ships without having to jump out of yours and press your face to it. I believe this gives an error that it's for TC only, but you can ignore that. Just install it anyway and it'll work fine.
  • SEWN+TurboBooster - Configurable turbo booster that lets you use energy cells, spaceflies, shields, or laser energy to give yourself a temporary boost. Great for quickly catching up to fleeing ships or getting the hell out of a bad fight.
  • StockExchangeHotkey1.1 - Self-explanatory. Vanilla game doesn't let you open the stock exchange without going through the menus for some reason.
  • TISv7.5 - Teladi Information Service. Lets you find weapons/shields/equipment without having to manually check every station around you.
  • tradeoverview-2.053 - Trade Overview. Lets you add ships/stations to a list which then keeps track of how much money they've made you.
  • Waffensystem_CODEA_X3TC_V3311 - CODEA carrier/fleet management. Create complex, self-sustaining/supplying fleets centered around carriers. You won't be using this until you're in the endgame. There are other, less complicated alternatives.
  • X3AP-Apricot-Dillpickle-TC-Plots-Complete-for-AP-v1-0 - Any game start automatically gives you all the rewards for every plot as well as the option to take the money (something like 50 mil IIRC). DO NOT use/enable if you're a new player. Strictly to be used as a quickstart button when you're on your 10th campaign.

To install everything here, simply use Plugin Manager. 'Install Package' will install anything ending in .spk while 'Install Archive' will automatically install any zip files for you. When you start the game for the first time it'll hang for a bit while everything loads/activates. Once you're actually playing, change your pilot's name (P->M) to 'Thereshallbewings' without the quotes. The game should hang for a second again as the script editor turns on. Once that's done fly to the closest station, save your game, and then load it right back up. This should load the delayed install mods like Complex Cleaner and MARS. MARS also has a timer built in before it installs, so if it doesn't pop wait about 5 minutes and then try saving/loading again.

There are two main ways that you activate/enable/use mods/scripts in the game. Go into Options->Control->Interface and at the very bottom you'll see a bunch of your mods and the various options that you can assign a hotkey to. Make sure you set something up for Plugin Configuration (I use Shift+*), as that lets you config a lot of the more complex mods. For more detailed info on the scripts, to get more, or to look up instructions on how to actually use some of them just search for the script/mod in the Egosoft Script/Mod Megathread.

I included a copy of X3 Editor just for my own convenience sake. You shouldn't really need to use it for anything but it's nice to have in case you decide to change something in a mod.

I have done nothing really so far beyond the game start, ship name change to Therewillbewings (almost missed that, thank goodness for reading comprehension :downs:), dock and save. I've since quit and restarted (to change video settings). So far the only "errors" are messages that pop up on game load- (had to reference screenshots, since the messages do not stay in the message log it seems).

"For this version of the Pilot Union Libraries version 3.9.00 or higher has to be installed!"

And I do not think THIS is a bug, just it letting me know MARS is turned on. "MARS fire control system. Script updating to version 525 . Game / Mod installation detected : Vanilla. Reading Laser Data File : 7040"

Got the plugin manager light set to Modified mode, not vanilla. I have not attempted to use MARS stuff or set any new hotkeys except to set Bounce, turn on bounce, then put Shift+T back to nearest enemt because looking at the controls reminded me that either there is no way to put controls back to Defaults if I forget, or there is but it's hidden to my newbie eyes. I'm writing off the game spitting me out of the military station 90 degrees around it from the actual docking bay to just the game being weird.

Shift+F to match target speed, that sounds useful in comba-oh wait, it opens the "Press F for Freight window", every single time it matches target speed.

Shaken, not purred.
I was getting an error for 6 of the scripts saying required libraries were missing, upon closer inspection they all required the Befehlsbibliothek library. I already had it installed so I decided to reinstall it, now I am error free.

E: Is there any way to get SETA to turn itself off less? Or actually is there a way to open the steam overlay without turning SETA off?

If a menu is open with SETA on and you alt-tab or do the overlay it should stay on. I use the "r" menu or stock exchange usually.
