I appreciate shorter releases as much as the next guy but Reign in Blood is boring as poo poo aside from the bookending tracks

I've been going through black metal releases from the past few years. Here are some of my favorites that I don't think a lot of people have heard:

Gallowbraid – Ashen Eidolon (2010)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XVATLAuYWU
Atmospheric folk metal. By far my favorite black metal release since The Mantle.
Amazon, Import ($11.28 USD)I looked everywhere for a digital release, and it doesn't look like the artist is active anymore :(

Aquilus – Griseus (2011)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmDizAtF8gQ
Symphonic black metal with serious neo-classical elements. I normally prefer my black metal to be on the minimalist side, but I think they do a great job incorporating all the elements together. Kind of feels like if a modern film composer tried his hand at black metal.
Bandcamp ($8 USD)

Midnight Odyssey – Funerals from the Astral Sphere (2011)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7sRdrAGGqs
An incredible mixture of ambient and black metal. At over two hours long, this is what I want to fall asleep to.
Bandcamp (€13 EUR)

Petrychor – Effigies and Epitaphs (2011)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHuU-mmmBic
Folksy post-black metal. The musicianship, especially during the cleaner instrumental passages, is really impressive. The artist also released a companion ambient album under a different name, Carbonscape.
Bandcamp (Name Your Price)

Waning – The Human Condition (2012)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX7NoyorigQ
Progressive metal with a black foundation. Reminds me a lot of mid-to-late Enslaved. Love the shrill vocals during the bridge.
iTunes ($7.92 USD)

Wildernessking – The Writing of Gods in the Sand (2012)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9VObZxgJpY
Atmospheric black metal from South Africa, of all places. The opener really sunk its teeth into me.
Bandcamp ($5 USD)

Kvlt! posted:

Anyone have reccomendations for that really heavy depressive black metal sound? Along the lines of Leviathan, Nortt or Xasthur, thanks!

Elysian Blaze – Blood Geometry (2012)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clPNTEdO1hA
Atmospheric and depressive black metal with hearty helping of ambient. It's very slow moving and takes a while to get into the heavier parts. Not to be consumed in the presence of sunlight.
Amazon MP3 ($8.99 USD)

Not pure Black Metal but similar "driving melodic" metal would be Rapture's album Futile and Autumnblaze's Perdition Diaries as both have that "Brave Murder Day" worship down to a science.

As do The Morningside and especially Toorn -- and here's the latter driving home the point by single-handedly nailing "Brave" and "Murder."

I don't know if I would call it the best Mayhem album since the sound is awful and it's full of fuckups, but I definitely like it a lot better than any of their studio albums, and Dead is a big part of why.

If you like that sort of pastoral, moody, doom-tinged stuff, and you have hours if not days to kill, dive into Hypnotic Dirge Records. The way the webstore is divided up between labels and/or genres is kind of annoying but there's so much amazing and obscure stuff in there. I think they have a bandcamp, but again, it's divided among several bandcamp pages depending on which label the music is from.

Not only do they have a ton of doomish stuff I'd never heard of, their black metal department is even more of a treasure trove.

Also, "LEIPZIG. ARE YOU DEAD?!"

Leipzig is my favorite Mayhem album (as you can tell by my various Ohlin inspired avatars). It really is the most punishing sound, and drat those vocals really do just kinda tear through as well as the instruments. It just kinda tears right through your soul. Very well made. Grand Declaration is my second favorite though...gotta love those spoken word monologues.

Panzerfaust was recorded in february/april 1994, while Nordavind was recorded in november 1994. Other than "Noregsgard", the songs on Nordavind are just metal adaptations of traditional Norwegian folk songs. Most likely Fenriz just liked the main riff of "Quintessence" enough to warrant a second take.

Fenriz has later expressed regret at ever recording Nordavind, and has shown strong distaste for the viking/folk trend that followed Storm and Isengard. Personally I don't mind the albums, but Storm at least feels like a novelty project.

What? That album is terrible, sloppy and drunken. The last track is the only one where the band doesn't sound lethargic. It has none of the atmosphere of DMDS and none of the feeling of good earlier black metal like Bathory. It just sounds like a band that was tired, lethargic, and hadn't fully worked out what they were trying to do yet.

I just listened to it again, and sorry, but you're totally wrong. I'm now of the opinion that it's actually the only Mayhem worth listening to (maybe Deathcrush too). Also, don't bring the greatest black metal ever made into this, of course it's not as good as Bathory. Quorthon is untouchable.

Bathory is important and influential, sure, but fairly boring in my opinion, and I'd say there are many black metal albums far surpassing anything Quorthon released. Kvist's For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike immediately comes to mind, as does Tsjuder's Desert Northern Hell. I know, Bathory boring, them's fightin' words, but that's just how I feel.

I, as I'm sure many people have, got into black metal through Agalloch. As such, I've only really listened to atmospheric stuff from this century (read: fvlse kvlt), that is, until now. I'm going through the classics.

So far, I've listened to:

Burzum – Det Som Engang Var Let's not talk about Varg, please. Just the music. It's good, but I feel like this maybe wasn't the best Burzum album to start with. It's interesting enough, but it seems to be lacking something I can't quite describe.

Darkthrone – Under A Funeral Moon I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The minimalist aesthetic is really appealing, and I like the vocals.

Immortal – Pure Holocaust Holy poo poo yes yes yes. I've heard At The Heart of Winter before, but this is decidedly more raw but still blisteringly fast and catchy as hell. Immortal will probably end up being my favorite BM band ever.

Emperor – In the Nightside Eclipse Having heard one of Ihsahn's recent offerings, I was pretty amazed that this came from the same guy, although I guess Samoth contributes a lot to the songwriting. I can appreciate the sound, but it isn't really doing a lot for me. Maybe because it's too busy?

If anyone has any recommendations from these or similar artists, much thanks! :black101:

EDIT: Speaking of Agalloch, I listened to their latest and I am sadly disappointed. :(

Conqueror played war metal which is a retarded mix of black metal, death metal and grindcore with horrid production values and you'll either love it or hate it. It's fun in short bursts

Wulkanaz sing about dark germanic heathenism or some poo poo in ancient language. The songs are raw, primitive and weirdly catchy
