I've been going through black metal releases from the past few years. Here are some of my favorites that I don't think a lot of people have heard: Gallowbraid – Ashen Eidolon (2010) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XVATLAuYWU Atmospheric folk metal. By far my favorite black metal release since The Mantle. Amazon, Import ($11.28 USD) — I looked everywhere for a digital release, and it doesn't look like the artist is active anymore  Aquilus – Griseus (2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmDizAtF8gQ Symphonic black metal with serious neo-classical elements. I normally prefer my black metal to be on the minimalist side, but I think they do a great job incorporating all the elements together. Kind of feels like if a modern film composer tried his hand at black metal. Bandcamp ($8 USD) Midnight Odyssey – Funerals from the Astral Sphere (2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7sRdrAGGqs An incredible mixture of ambient and black metal. Can we all agree that the best Mayhem album is the "Live in Leipzig" LP with Dead singing? That recording is heavier and more insane than anything Mayhem ever recorded. I still like DMDS and Deathcrush but that live album is PUNISHING.

Leipzig is my favorite Mayhem album (as you can tell by my various Ohlin inspired avatars). It really is the most punishing sound, and drat those vocals really do just kinda tear through as well as the instruments. It just kinda tears right through your soul. Very well made. Grand Declaration is my second favorite though...gotta love those spoken word monologues. "WHEN IT'S COOOOOOOLLLLLLLLDDDDDD...AND WHEN IT'S DARK............THE FREEZING MOON CAN OBSESS YOU!"

Other than "Noregsgard", the songs on Nordavind are just metal adaptations of traditional Norwegian folk songs. Most likely Fenriz just liked the main riff of "Quintessence" enough to warrant a second take. Fenriz has later expressed regret at ever recording Nordavind, and has shown strong distaste for the viking/folk trend that followed Storm and Isengard. Personally I don't mind the albums, but Storm at least feels like a novelty project.

I'm now of the opinion that it's actually the only Mayhem worth listening to (maybe Deathcrush too). Also, don't bring the greatest black metal ever made into this, of course it's not as good as Bathory. Quorthon is untouchable.

I, as I'm sure many people have, got into black metal through Agalloch. As such, I've only really listened to atmospheric stuff from this century (read: fvlse kvlt), that is, until now. I'm going through the classics. So far, I've listened to: Burzum – Det Som Engang Var Let's not talk about Varg, please. Just the music. It's good, but I feel like this maybe wasn't the best Burzum album to start with. It's interesting enough, but it seems to be lacking something I can't quite describe. Darkthrone – Under A Funeral Moon I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The minimalist aesthetic is really appealing, and I like the vocals. Immortal – Pure Holocaust Holy poo poo yes yes yes. I've heard At The Heart of Winter before, but this is decidedly more raw but still blisteringly fast and catchy as hell. Immortal will probably end up being my favorite BM band ever. Emperor – In the Nightside Eclipse Having heard one of Ihsahn's recent offerings, I was pretty amazed that this came from the same guy, although I guess Samoth contributes a lot to the songwriting. I can appreciate the sound, but it isn't really doing a lot for me. Maybe because it's too busy? If anyone has any recommendations from these or similar artists, much thanks!  EDIT: Speaking of Agalloch, I listened to their latest and I am sadly disappointed.
