Things that Go Bump in the Night, eh? Short Story: Monsters are real. They’re not easy to track, not easy to find, but they’re real. And they’re worth money. Of course, you don’t know any of this yet. You’re just out going out to the woods to work on a project for a filmography class, at an old cabin your professor just bought. Long Story: Monsters are real. The things that go bump in the night, that stories and movies talk about? They’re out there. Vampires are sucking blood, werewolves are biting people, zombies are eating flesh and calling paramedics. There’s people out there who hunt them for a living, people who will pay for the various bits and parts off of them. Of course, they also save lives. You know none of this. You’re just out in the woods, hanging out, drinking, and shooting a horror film for your filmography class. The cabin is something your professor bought for all of a few hundred dollars. Hell, he’s only been there once. Apparently it’s still full of the old owner’s stuff. Now, Professor Jackson wants that damned horror film you owe him in by next monday! You’ve got a week to get the rough cut in. Game Info: This game is primarily my baby, but will be co-GMed by DocBubonic. I’m not very strong on GURPS rules (this’ll be my second time GMing it), so I’ll be getting his help if something’s in question. Rule of thumb is when it comes to rules, if Doc says something, then that’s the rule. As for when we’ll start, I’ll give the final pick of characters once I’m no longer hosed up from having my wisdom teeth pulled. The characters are not starting out as monster hunters, but you’ll be in the business before too long. There’s a good number of other monster hunters/monster hunting organizations out there. Okay, the elephant in the room: I’ve had to abandon games in the past due to real life. However, my life is nice and stable now. Starting school in October, I’m not half-starved, got some kind of income, all that fun stuff. What this means is I’m not going to abandon the game. If some of you players ditch, I can always reopen recruitment. One final character related note before the character creation section: your characters can start with some small level of Hidden Lore (monsters) from family stories, years of watching horror films, reading lots of old horror novels, whatever. But myself and DocBubonic have the final veto on what’s okay. Character Creation: 100 point characters, up to 50 in disadvantages. Everyone starts off with the Luck advantage for free, with a refresh every few pages (ie: whenever I decide you guys need some luck). No supernatural or exotic advantages. Aside from that, it’s pretty open. As long as you’ve got a reason to be in a filmography class, you’re good to go. More realistic, the better. The game is going to be set in Canada, so if you think you’re going to start off as a walking arsenal, I’m going to laugh at you. That said, guns are fine to start with(so long as it’s nice and legal, and you remember that monsters might not give a drat about bullets). I should note, the game is taking a LOT of inspiration from a strange mix of Supernatural, the Blair Witch Project, and Scooby-Doo. You’re probably not going to be running up and shanking vampires from the start, so much as figuring out the best way to disable them and THEN shank the gently caress out of them. Not to mention figuring out that it’s a vampire in the first place. If anyone has any questions, I can be reached on #bubonicgames on IRC most of the time, or PMs here on the forums. Submitting a kid whose dad used to take him camping a lot and tell him ghost stories. Surprise, dad was actually a monster hunter until he died in a car crash. Kid doesn't know this, his dad never went beyond stories that might be somewhat more accurate than the usual fictional dross.

Cool, as I said both shows rock, but I do have a strong love for the original series too. So quick question where is the story set? Canada based on the Edmonton mention, right? Just wondering if we can include firearm skills and a Non restricted firearm with us(tactical shooting is so wonderfully spergy), like that weirdo AR clone, VZ58, or a Boys... or things that you might eventually make...like a handgun in 45-70. I'm going with a kid who has a live long love of Bigfoot stuff from 1970s pseudocs to books by John Green and Peter Bryne.

gfanikf posted:Cool, as I said both shows rock, but I do have a strong love for the original series too. Starting in Alberta, but all of Canada depending on where you guys go to hunt nasty critters. I figure the oilfield is a damned good place for monsters to be hiding. There's plenty of accidents, lots of new people shipping in and out, and all sorts of things like that. I've got no problems with you guys starting with guns, just keep our weird rear end laws in mind. And my designs, seeing as they're not in production, aren't allowed(but you could theoretically make one with the right skills and tools). A quick breakdown for the uninformed(so basically everyone who isn't in TFR): Guns sit in three categories; non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited. All of those require licenses, either a PAL(for non-restricted firearms), RPAL(for restricted firearms), or one of the several varieties of Prohibited license. Non-restricted firearms are most shotguns and rifles. Almost anything over 26 inches overall length, almost all semi-autos with an 18 inch or longer barrel. If it's manually operated(like a pump shotgun, bolt or lever action rifle) then odds are it's non-restricted no matter the length. Restricted firearms are pistols, AR-15s, and any semi-auto with a barrel under 18 inches. You can't(legally) take these anywhere but a legal firing range or a gunsmith. Prohibited firearms are full-auto, anything with a barrel under 4.25 inches, anything in .32 or .25 calibers, or anything from a long long list. If it's on that list, and you take it, I'll tell you and suggest something else that's similar but legal. You straight up CAN NOT get a prohibited license. It's virtually impossible. Prohibs can only be grandfathered in. On top of that, you can't take them anywhere but a prohib range, and you need to get permission from the RCMP ahead of time(which they probably won't give). We've also got magazine caps here. Semi-auto rifles and shotguns are legally pinned at 5 rounds(except .22s), pistol are pinned at 10, and anything that's manually operated has no restrictions. Belts are fine if they were designed before 1945, but anything after is prohibited. Due to the dumb way our magazine laws works, it's the magazine itself that's restricted. So a 5 round magazine for .50 Beowulf, becomes an 18 round magazine for anything that takes STANAGs no problem. 10 round magazine for an AR pistol? Use it in a rifle, again, no problem. There's no upper limit on calibers. A 125mm gun on a tank? Just fine, odds are it's even non-restricted. 20mm anti-tank rifle? Just fine. Any ammo is fine, as long as it's not flechette, AP pistol ammo, or a HE round under 15mmm(yes, that means a 20mm gun can sling HE all day long). Thanks for answering the questions and apologies for having to give the whole Firearms Rulebook Replay...but I think you're forgetting the hilarity of the RCMP magazine rulings, ie .50 Beowulf. Oh one last gun question, what's the rule for a short barrel shotgun? One that was manufactured in the under 18 inch length, vs done in the field...which isn't legal iirc. Those are non restricted too, right?

If it's made with the short barrel, it's fine. If you chop it yourself, it instantly goes to Prohibited. You're able to buy a Norinco 870 clone with a 8.5 inch barrel(that's magazine fed, as a bonus) and it's just fine. I'll edit in the goofyness for the magazine laws into my post.

When Mark was young, his father was rarely around. His job always took him from one city to another, always on trips that lasted weeks or months at a time. His mother always looked worried when his father left, but would say what his father did, except that his job was important. Yet every year, there was one tradition that his father always made time for. A two week camping trip. Every August would see Mark and his father in a new area, out in the wild, living on the fish that could be caught and the wood that they could cut. Mark's father would show him how to tie knots, how to light a fire with only a string and a stick, even the basics of orienteering. And without fail, every night, his father would sit on the other side of the fire and regale him with spooky stories. His father didn't come back from a business trip when Mark was twelve years old. Seven years later, his mother happily remarried, Mark is in film school, aiming to get an apprenticeship as Scenic Artist, and is already making a name for himself as a specialist in outdoor scenes of all kinds, with his inspiration often coming from the wilderness he camped in as a child. quote:Name: Mark Morcott chin up everything sucks fucked around with this message at 20:27 on Jun 6, 2014 |

In 2012, Thomas was arrested and charged with trespassing because of his unique hobby, which he passes off as being an urban exploration enthusiast. He usually keeps his beliefs in ghosts and his goal of being a ghost hunter to himself after an incident which lead to a falling out with his father. In his ghost research, Thomas has come across some of the hidden lore involving the spirits, though whether or not he can separate the fact from the fiction remains to be seen. code:

Nicholas Currier Born and raised in rural Alberta, Nick began making movies with his friends when he was still in middle school. Though many people told tall tales about strange animals in the woods, Bigfoot and so on, Nick always scoffed at them. He was firmly rooted in the real world, working on documentaries in the summer, once going as far as Ellesmere Island to film polar bears, and taking classes a ACAD during the long winters. When his friends told him about this project, he wasn't sure if it was for him, but his friends pointed out that his experience would add an air of authenticity to the mockumentary. And it would give them a good week out in the woods, with nothing to do but film. Christopher Lewis Chris likes the truth, and he likes the truth recorded on film. Oh of course the actors are lying and the sets aren't real and quite a lot of the time quite a lot of the scenery isn't even there any more but everyday truth is constructed anyway, it's a deliberate arrangement of attitude and words to conform to the desires of the speaker and the audience. When it comes to film, that's literally the point and that makes its truth true. Presentation is important drat it. Chris' parents divorced when he was quite young, and it was a bit messy as you can probably tell. But generally he's a relaxed guy, he gets along with his family, he goes out with his friends but ultimately, he makes films. He does sets, he does lighting, he does camerawork and he does acting and scripts (but not very well). He'll toy around with filters and illumination, all to get the things he's trying to show to be shown. 55 pre:ST: 11 [10] HP: 11 DX: 11 [20] IQ: 11 [20] Will: 11 Per: 11 [5] HT: 10 FP: 10 BL: 24 Basic Speed: 5.25 Basic Move: 5 Dodge: 8 Damage: 1d-1/1d+1 Language: 8 English [Native] [0] French [Accented] [4] Hindi [Accented] [4] Advantages: 3 Absolute Timing [2] Claim to Hospitality (Mother, living in Calgary) [1] Luck [*] Perks: 1 Penetrating Voice [1] Disadvantages: Quirks: -5 Prefers to be as honest as possible [-1] Likes: Bollywood [-1] Quirk 3 [-1] Quirk 4 [-1] Quirk 5 [-1] Skills: 38 Acting IQ/A 10 [1] Area Knowledge (Edmonton) IQ/E 11 [1] Area Knowledge (Canada) IQ/E 11 [1] Area Knowledge (World) IQ/E 11 [1] Artist (Interior Decorating) IQ/H 9 [1] Artist (Scene Design) IQ/H 10 [2] Body Language Per/A 12 [1] Brawling DX/E 11 [1] Climbing DX/A 10 [1] Computer Operation IQ/E 12 [2] Connoisseur (Visual Arts) IQ/A 11 [2] Current Affairs (Pop culture) IQ/E 12 [2] Detect Lies Per/H 11 [2] Driving (Automobile) DX/A 10 [2] Electrician IQ/A 10 [1] Electronics Operation (Media) IQ/A 11 [2] Electronics Repair (Media) IQ/A 10 [1] Fast talk IQ/A 10 [1] Games (Drinking) IQ/E 11 [1] Gesture IQ/E 11 [1] Group Performance (Directing) IQ/A 11 [2] Make up IQ/E 11 [1] Observation Per/A 11 [1] Performance IQ/A 10 [1] Photography IQ/A 11 [2] Research IQ/A 10 [1] Scrounging Per/E 12 [1] Swimming HT/E 10 [1] Writing IQ/A 9 [1] Cord 3/16" (100 yards) $10 Canteen $10 Blankets $20 Small backpack $60 Boots $80 Normal clothes (costed at home) Winter clothes (costed at home) Hatchet $40 Cosmetics (movie) $120 Heavy flashlight x4 $80 Pole (10') $8 Headphones $50 Microphone x2 $200 Digital media player $100 Wristwatch $20 Personal basics $- Sleeping bag $100 Medium computer $1000 Complexity 1 visual editor program $100 Portable gas generator $600 Gas (10 gallons) $15 5 gallon can x2 $30 Wire cutters $30 Utility knife $2 Duct tape $1 Pocket knife $5 Can opener $5 Dehydrated food (20 meals) $100 Fresh food (steaks and a ham hock) $12 Snacks (10) $20 Cell phone $100 Small batteries (20) $20 Medium batteries (20) $100 Camera bag $25 Mini-DV camera $500 Mini DV cassettes x5 $10 Polaroid instant camera$180 Film x10 $20 Infrared film x2 $60 Digitial camera $75 At home: Complete wardrobe $600 DVR $300 TV set $1500 DVD player $200 VHS recorder $50 namesake fucked around with this message at 23:27 on Jun 9, 2014 |

All right, here's my guy. Aspects have been taken from Pulp Guns (almost all stats for the Guide Gun), Tactical Shooting (some of his gear), and High-Tech (the knife, mainly). I'm also applying my own research on things like accessories and items for what doesn't exist in the books, like the hunting vest. Let me know if he needs non-winter clothing as well; I didn't know what season this would be taking place in, so I just assumed "Canada" and gave him something for the cold. Also, do I have the points and/or money left over to add a Glock 20 to his setup? Stanley Zubizaretta A young man from a wealthy family in Guelph. Stanley took up film as a hobby in high school, and took it as his major in college for lack of any other desirable options. While he's not a bad guy himself, he comes from a blatantly privileged lifestyle and has never actually held a proper job in his life, and rarely faced hardship of any kind. This makes him more isolated from the average and lower-class students in his classes. He also has a bit of a weakness for women... He has a little firearms knowledge and skill from shooting with his dad, but is by no means an expert. Using his parents money, he bought a Marlin Guide Gun before the trip and has only fired enough rounds to be familiar with it. He stays in good shape and exercises often, and has some experience hiking out in the woods. code:

Looks pretty good chitoryu12. I've got no problem with you having the Glock, just keep in mind getting caught with a restricted somewhere that isn't at home, a legal range, a gunsmith, or going between those is a fairly serious crime. You might want to grab more than winter clothes as well. Canada is cold during the winter, yes, but good chunks of the country can also hit +40 Celsius in the summer. My home town had an annual temperature swing of around 75 to 80 degrees(one extreme year was a 90 degree swing, from +45 to -45). Would it be a safe guess to say you're going to spend those remaining 25 points on skills?

I just wanted to point out that every character should have at least 1 point in Electronics Operation (media). This is the basic skill for operating all forms of audio, film and video equipment. If you're in the film class, then you should have this from what you learned. Also since every character is a college student they should have a point in Research too (which means they need a point in computer operation).

Well, this initial inventory is only for the expedition out to the camp site. I'm assuming he has at least more clothing back home. I just didn't know what time of year it was going to start in. And I'm deciding whether or not I want to use them or just let them sit for later usage. I'm having trouble thinking of useful skills or advantages that would fit the character. Edit: All right, I've edited the changes in. He's down to 13 spare points after adding the requisite skills (I assume being in the film class means no points are spent for the single point I put into Electronics Operation?). I also added in the Glock 20 with a box of ammo and two magazines, plus a set of ordinary clothing, and separated my inventory to list that they're at home. I think for anything extra beyond that, I'll just figure out the purchases with a GM when it comes up or figuring out whether or not he could conceivably have had the stuff. chitoryu12 fucked around with this message at 04:07 on Jun 4, 2014 |

You're still spending the point if you want the skill. But 12 spare points is still a nice pool to lean on in case you forgot a few things you might have needed.

All right, change made. I made it 2 points so I could do it at my IQ level. That leaves me with 11 points free to save.

I just completely forgot that I wanted him to own one in the first place, so I grabbed an inexpensive used model after scanning the current classifieds up in Canada and used it as the basis.

This is what I have so far. I have some more stuff to play around with, I just want to make sure everything is fine so far and confirm how much money I have to buy equipment with. I'm thinking around 200K, based on the TL. Open to any types of comments on it. I'm going to eventually change the name and picture to John Millius well a film student who loves the work of Milius and is heavily inspired by his love of the outdoors and the PC's own love of the outdoors, guns, and stories of Sasquatch. He is also a lot older then most students, being around 28 and previously being a member of the Canadian Forces serving a tour in Afghanistan. Alright, Doc and I have looked over a few things and we have some small concerns. Nothing serious, just questions and suggestions. gfanikf: You're mostly fine, just some skill related stuff. What was your dude's MOC? If you were a combat engineer, you might want to throw a point or two into Engineering(combat) to reflect that. You might want some points into Brawling, Soldier, and some sort of film related skills as well. We're also wondering where your dude learned Counterfeiting and Forensics. Also, with Wealthy, you've got 100K not 200. Also, just so you know, Weirdness Magnet is pretty much giving me permission to have all the strange things in the world happen to you. When something strange goes down, it's probably going to be effecting you first. I'm fine with the you having it, just warning you. Beardless: Looks good. Doc and I just want to see what you pick up for gear. EVERYONE: Ya'll might want some social skills, eh? A point or two here and there will go a long way to making sure you can actually talk to people without needing to default on everything. Also, if you've got some of your starting cash laying around, then grab some stuff you might want to take out camping. Drinks, some sort of food, a source of music, etc.
