The first Rudolf cleansing killed off like four billion people but the narrator said it was ~1% of the population. So the human population went from 400 billion to I think 39 billion at the time of the series (I just saw the episode where they give 25 and 13 billion for empire and alliance).

So it's like a 90% reduction over the course of 500 years.

I think it's said that a large chunk of the alliance's population came from people fleeing the empire. And if people were fleeing the empire then it makes sense to imagine that there were horrible famines and more terrible purges of people.

I believe one of the history eps states that most of the killing happened after Rudolf himself, especially when the nobility crushed the uprising following Rudolfs death.

The Empire was pretty much "What if people like the Nazis got their way?"

That or your average EUIV game where you go and paint the cultural map of your empire one single way and picks "put down the revolt" on every single option :v:

Always thought the dwindling of population was attributed to the war thats before and after the fall of Earth as the capital of the space republic, general stagnation of society, the purges of Rudolf and the ban on people whith disabilities like Oberstein.

Or just the numbers aren't consistent enough through the series, like in 40k.

How do you actually pronounce Kircheis? Is the pronounciation really Kir-hee-ice in German?

You can't really transliterate that into english pronounciation elegantly. Here:

Click on the speaker symbol in the German box to hear a German pronounciation of the name.

I imagine the Alliance and Empire had a fairly rough parity for a long time, but when the Alliance launches their invasion in the wake of capturing Iserlohn, it was pretty much an unmitigated disaster, and then Yang himself was forced to destroy a substantial part of the remainder to defeat the military coup d'etat. On the other hand the Empire took much lighter losses during the same time period, and during their civil war, I believe only a minority of forces went over to them, and on top of that a large part of their strength came from the nobles various private military forces. The Empire being the Empire, they probably had a significant amount of military strength simply repressing their population, which was no longer necessary following Reinhard's reforms. The only reason the Alliance could stand up to the Empire manpower-wise is because the appearance of an alternative to living in the Empire set off a tidal wave of refugees flowing into the FPA IIRC.

I think it's outright stated that the FPA's GDP and economic activity is what keeps it afloat compared to the Empire's population and space.

The novels specify in the prologue that the peak population of the Galactic Federation was 300 billion, reduced to 40 billion as the story begins.

They also explain all the technology right off the bat, which was always conspicuously absent in the anime. But then, exposition would have been incredibly out of place in the narrative.

Really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Good for you. It's the best anime. Please post your early impressions and speculations about where things might go so you can look back on them when you've finished the show.

Here's my own post from way back:

Chas McGill posted:

I'm on episode 10 and loving it, though I much prefer Yang Wen-li's character and plotline to Reinhard's. He just seems to have much better supporting characters and the political intrigue of the Free Alliance seems more realistic and relatable than the courtly stuff.

Jessica Edwards' activism, for instance, is far more interesting than the tepid Annerose.

I realise I'm only a short way in and there's plenty that could change to make me like the Imperial episodes more.

I must be watching this at the slowest pace in the world. Just now finishing up episode 21. Was really hoping that maybe someone went back to look for survivors in the stadium but then greenhill or w/e got on the phone and said they were slaughtered which killed any hope of edwards still being alive. rip

Oh wow it's been 5 months since I started and I've only seen 21 eps

The real power behind countless overlords

Thank you so much for recommending this goons. I just watched My Conquest is the Sea of Stars and I knew I was going to like it when in the first five minutes Reinhard von Lohengramm's staff actually does what a staff is supposed to do! Really looking forward to seeing what comes next, even if I'm disappointed that he let Yang Wenli escape at the end. I wish they'd commed each other and worked out a cease fire long enough for Wenli to get away instead, but really that's a minor point.

I just started watching this, too, up to around episode 15 or so. Oberstein starving the frontier worlds so that the Liberation Fleet would have to use its own resources to provide for them and the entire shitstorm that followed :suspense:

I didn't know, guys. Why does nobody know that this show exists.

It's a 110 episode political space opera that started in 1988 and it's ~*anime*~ which can be hard to talk people into starting. But like others have said watching people trickle into this thread singing its praises for a decade is a pretty strong indication that this one really is special.

I watched the 2 movies and to be honest didn't find it all that compelling. I started watching the series since everyone has been raving about this show and now I'm about 10 or 12 episodes in and I'm still not finding it all that engaging or interesting. Should I keep going or if I don't like it by now, chances are I won't like it ever?

I wouldn't suggest forcing yourself if you're not enjoying it. What you've already seen is a pretty good sample of what the show is going for, so if it hasn't grabbed you I would say move on to something you might enjoy more.

If you can get through episode 17 without liking it, I'd say you aren't going to like it. 16-17 is where things start to go off the rails from your usual space drama.

To be fair, I didn't like the first dozen or so episodes too. There were just too many characters introduced just to act like idiots in order to make Yang/Reinhard look good. But yeah towards of Season 1 was when it finally grabbed me.

I've never had a problem getting them from Central Anime, I'd recommend their version anyway as they've been subbing this show for literally decades now. This group is so old they used to mail VHS tapes to each other :corsair:

Anyway links to everything from DVD sources are here on their forums. I've never felt the need to try tracking down HD rips since for the most part they'll be upscales from the DVD source anyway.

The narrator of this series was amazing even if he did spoil some major deaths. It was pretty surreal when he casually quoted Reinhard but then added that there were "no credible historical documents" to confirm that Reinhard ever said the quote.

The narrator really is one of the best parts of the show even if he is a bit heavy handed with the spoilers and I wonder if he was in the books as well. It really sells the whole 'historical documentary' feel.

I didn't really mind the spoilers because that too adds to the documentary feel. I mean, if you watched a documentary on WWII, nobody would mind the narrator casually dropping that the Nazis lost and Hitler died.

I've been watching this and babylon 5 on and off, and even though I haven't seen the episode you're talking about specifically, B5 has an episode just like that which screams 'ulterior motive' behind the editing and commercials, a la Starship Troopers. "...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"
So I'm up to the 32nd episode and really enjoying it so far, there's one thing that's kind of bugging me though.

Episode 26 spoilers

After Kircheis gets killed, Annerose tells Reinhard that she's leaving his place and will be living away from him. To me it just rang false that at a time she had to have known he would need her more than ever, both so he wouldn't be alone and as a moral guidance, that she'd split. I understand that the combination of grief and the distancing she was already feeling from Reinhard led to that. But that just seems a pretty rash decision not consistent with her character as I've come to know her.

The show won't really ever come right out and say it, but Reinhard's not the only one devastated over Sieg's death. Her cutting ties with the man who bears a fair share of the responsibility is just how she chose to respond to it.
