Another cool and underrated Norwegian album is "Pure Black Energy" by Tulus. The cover art is amazing. They later changed their name to Khold and started churning out uninspired Moonfog turds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkYWMIl3Lzc

Think along the lines of Happy Days I'm gonna go ahead and quote myself: quote:Trist is hypnotic and extremely captivating. You could also look into Hypothermia, Life Is Pain (collaboration between the guys behind Hypothermia and Trist. Awful name but they released a great demo), Abyssic Hate, Silencer, Thy Light, Nyktalgia, Sterbend, Forgotten Tomb, Austere, Make A Change... Kill Yourself, Selvhat, Gris, Klage, Bethlehem, Kargvint, Wigrid, Krohm, and of course Strid. I also recently discovered Mortualia, which is the solo project of Shatraug of Sargeist/Horna/Behexen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9or0e_Ay0g

I hadn't heard of Sólstafir before, though. They sound pretty unique, at least to my ears. Thanks for the recommendations! I'll check out the ones from other posters soon enough. But I should mention that I also got Ulver's Nattens Madrigal and I think it's my favorite OSBM release so far.

For the guy looking for more melodic depressive black metal, definitely check out Sombres Foręts and Miserere Luminis (which is a collaboration between two members from Gris + one from Sombres Foręts), pretty much the only good bands I can think of that ElectricWizard didn't list. One quality they have is very impressive and varied drumming, not something you'd normally expect to hear in the genre. Should be right up your alley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssdYLUafUOc And not quite in the same vein, but you could also try Lifelover - this whole album is fantastic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CnIKorqYu4

Don't know if this will interest anyone reading this topic (prolly too geeky): I've been applying some machine learning methods to black metal lyrics. One of the experiments was trying to find a correlation between lyrical themes and records labels, depicted in the graph below. The larger the circle, the higher the percentage of black metal releases by a given label that are assigned to a topic. For example, if we're looking for releases based on "Pain, Sorrow & Suffering", Depressive Illusions is the label to go to. Click here and scroll down for the interactive chart. Anyway, this silly hobby has helped me rediscover a bunch of albums I had forgotten about, like Carpathian Forest's "Black Shining Leather". Don't really care for their later releases, but this one is an absolute gem.

That is pretty awesome. Just from the cool display of data standpoint and getting all those numbers crunched (I know the actual work is just a little more complex than that of course). I almost want to print off the image and stick it on my desk at work. Reminds me a little bit of the old Needle database someone had written for Metal-Archives that worked with all the data.

It made me realize that black metal started almost 35 years ago, spawned a bunch of sub-genres, and I wondered what sort of changes (lyrical-wise) happened during that time.
