Dick Trauma posted:We had filmstrips when I was a kid. They were like a cartridge that was inserted into the projector. You'd have the soundtrack on a cassette and when it dinged the teacher would advance to the next image. Some of the ones we had in my school had a built in tape player and speaker, and would automatically advance the projector the next slide at the chime.

There was a time in the 90s where the coolest thing ever was surfing, and Bill and Ted style surfer dudes were everywhere going "dude" and "whoa" and "bodacious!". I never understood it. It went away with Chip and Pepper tshirts. Oh god flip projectors. Man a class was taken up with those ancient flim strips when I was a kid. Only some times did we have a tape to go with it, most of the time we just read out the captions from the bottom of the slide. Those things got insanely hot, and once the film actually caught on fire because the teacher left it so long answering questions.

As long as it has that terrible warbling narration and lots of splices from breaks then it's perfect. I had an ornery bio teacher that used to say "We're not going to watch a movie: we're going to watch a film" and then we'd get 30 minutes of some 1960s black and white documentary about the paramecium.

To be fair, some of those older ones are actually far better. At my local high school, they still pull out an old filmstrip for cellular biology, because it covers te basics in a much clearer method than anything newer. It'd be nice if copyright law would explicitly allow format-shifting though.

Nothing like the look of a well worn 16mm that's been re-recorded onto a VHS to make "the joy of birth" into a horror film. I think the winning line we had from one was "You can say anything mum, it's the 90s!" in a film about how heredity disorders were passed. Collateral Damage posted:When I was in grade school I remember we got to watch presentations that were pictures shown by a slide projector accompanied by a soundtrack that came on reel. The teacher had a "portable" reel to reel player that she'd haul out and set up on the desk, and the sound track would have a beep or ding sound to signal that it was time to change slide. When I was in elementary school (1995-2000 or so) we still had these. Kodak carousel slide projector with either a reel to reel or cassette audio track that beeped when the teacher had to advance the slide. I guess that somewhere around that time computers reached a decent price point for educational use, or my school district had a major funding windfall. In middle school we went from slide projectors and green monotone PCs running 3.1 in the computer labs to eMacs and even carts with 30+ Mac laptops with OS X that teachers could request for their class periods. Our county libraries went for Mac products which was nice. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have incompatible files between library and school computers. Back then, not everyone had a home computer. Especially one with an internet connection.

In middle school we went from slide projectors and green monotone PCs running 3.1 in the computer labs to eMacs and even carts with 30+ Mac laptops with OS X that teachers could request for their class periods. Both Apple and Commodore were widespread in schools in the 1980s and in full color. I did learn BASIC on some variety of monochrome IBM beast that had the screen and double disk drive as a single unit (and raised hell if you turned it on with the keyboard unplugged). High school started with 3.1 and went to Windows 95 the next year. Only one classroom was wired for the internet when I graduated. I can't recall us using the slide projector very often, but do remember listening to The Three Musketeers on it. It had to be very abridged as I think we powered through it in one class session. I think every classroom in elementary school also had a record player, which is how I was introduced to Disco Duck. I know I've mentioned these before in this thread, but here's a real piece of obsolete school technology: System 80. It was a punch card machine. The cards were plastic and had a plastic handle on the end so you could easily slide them in and out. This article is dated 1971. We were still using them in the late 1980s, though you probably imagine the problems with punch cards. It had no brains at all to it and was completely reliable on the cards to work. Not to mention that it sounded like a jet taking off. If I remember correctly, they also were extremely hot to the touch.

Back in the old days magazines like Creative Computing would publish simple programs in BASIC for you to type into your computer. There were also books like this one, which I took out of the library and read even though I didn't have a PC. That makes libraries the first app store!

The laptop stands don't cast shadows, so it's at least photoshopped; we can only hope that that was the intent. (On the other hand, there's the art theory that the true meanings of a work are what the viewers get from it, not what the artist intended.)

Nobody uses them, and for good reason.
