I'm sure most people in here have heard Chris Black's projects Dawnbringer and High Spirits (both of which absolutely loving rip and immediately listen to both if you haven't). I just got the 7" for his new project Aktor that are supposed to put out an LP soon. Sounds very much like his other stuff although going in an even further direction towards early proto-metal stuff (maybe think Deep Purple or BOC). I'm super stoked for the LP, and do yourself a favor and check out the single from the 7"

Wintersun album release confirmed. He posted this on Facebook:quote:Just wrote Killer Riff 2, it´s even better! Very melodic yet dark and heavy. Using a drop Bb tuning for this one. Has a cool odd time signature on top of 4/4, so a bit "djenty". Now you´ll just have to wait to 2033 until I can record a new album.

anyone hear the new Architects album? probably one of my favorite metal albums of all time. It's got a little bit of a post hardcore feel, but certainly metal nonetheless. it has a really good integrated feel that I think a lot of modern metal is missing. for example, while the guitars are pretty noticeable (and same with the drums), they all seem incredibly integrated to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnAEJ-eSFPg b0jangles fucked around with this message at 18:12 on Jun 5, 2014 |

Huh, I always heard (from my friends who are more into PM) that the second was OK but they went to poo poo after that. Will check the new one though. Thanks. Any yeah, the bass... it's more like the sort of stuff Dom LaPointe would do than what I'd expect from a power metal band. But that's cool! It reminds me of the busy bass style that tech-thrash/power bands like Realm pulled off, but in more of a speed/power context, which is an awesome combination.

I don't get why it's supposed to be so much worse than the debut, it has those same bass shenanigans and the awesome metallic guitar sound. The third one makes me rage-puke though, with that lovely downtuned cookie cutter sound and chugga-chugga riffing. I think I heard a single from their fourth one as well but didn't see any reason to look into it further. I guess I can give it another shot though. But not until I've gotten home and blasted through Defying the Rules yet again.

I go into a whole slew of those retro-thrash bands that resurged a few years ago. Exmortus, Blood Tsunami and Merciless Death are a few others. I'd still prefer to listen to the thrash metal originals instead of second rate intimidators. Although, Vektor offered something just a little bit more original that just knocking off classic Voivod thrash. They took it just a wee bit further in my opinion. Both Black Future and Outer Isolation are phenomenal progressive thrash albums. Isn't it about time we've heard something new from Philly's favorite spacemen?

Vektor are from Arizona, but I agree. Warbringer are really the only old-school imitator that I like as much as their influences.

I totally forgot there was a new Hour of Penance album. It's pretty solid, although unsurprisingly similar to every other Hour of Penance album. One problem though: the new drummer seems to have borrowed that godawful snare tone from Arsis' We Are the Nightmare.

Exciting news. I've booked in studio time on Sunday to go and make the ultimate Metal guitar and bass tone possible! It'll be fast, heavy, loud and for a guitar nerd like me, ridiculously good fun. So on this Public Holiday, I'm gonna listen to a whole bunch of awesome sounding bands on my monitors and find a point of reference. A guitar\bass sound that sounds awesome, which I will then improve on. I have many points of reference in mind, but suggestions are welcome! What metal band had the best sounding guitars?

I don't think this guitar tone is beatable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBP8imm03Mo But seriously, a good tone depends on genre. Funeral doom can often use a deflated sound with very little treble, for example. Skepticism's tone on Stormcrowfleet is basically perfect in my opinion. Black metal? I dunno, I'm partial to Immortal's tone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4R-ZnosDRQ For death metal, I love the guitars on Obscura, but that's not something you're going to want every death metal album to sound like As for bass tone, I like it sort of clunky and rattly but not too high in the mix. The tone on Legion is amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-3N8NRmWo4 Lots of bands, especially ones with fretless bassists, land on a really obnoxious and unnatural tone to make sure you can hear everything the bassist does. Lookin' at you, Beyond Creation. Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 04:17 on Jun 9, 2014 |
