I went to the local tabletop gaming store the other day for the first time in over a decade (the last time was during my D&D nerd phase). I was trying to pick up a copy of One Night: Ultimate Werewolf (a quick-playing Mafia-type game that I played at a party and really liked). The last time I was in this store, it was full of Warhammer and D&D pieces, was run by a friendly older fat guy, and had a room in the back for local gaming groups. It had changed. A lot. By the entrance was a rack of overpriced snacks: cheetos, energy drinks, pocky, all sorts of dork fuel. The clerk was a goateed gentleman who didn't greet me or ask what I was looking for, as he was too busy hitting his e-cig like a futuristic bounty hunter. There was a huddled group of nerds at the center of the store discussing what I could only parse as Yugioh strategies. The collective reeked of cat piss and looked like it was 11 months out from its yearly shower. Another guy in the shop was using the store's free wifi on his laptop to play some MMO I wasn't familiar with that I have later come to find out is called Scarlet Blade. Don't google that name at work. It's basically a porn game. This guy was playing this in front of the whole store, with no shame at all. And then, right as I was giving up on finding the game among the untidy racks of randomly arranged games, one of the cat pee group members unrolled his My Little Pony poster to the excitement of the entire troll collective. I left and bought the game on Amazon. This trip confirmed that these kind of people are actually out there, in the wild, and do sometimes leave their houses. Scarlet Blade Screenshots

This is what happens when we shame people who have nerd hobbies, we scare away all the normal people and leave only those incapable of feeling shame

More or less, sometime it`s the contrary, it is the one who smell like cat piss that scare away people.

I work in a game shop on the weekends. I confirm it all. The owner's of the shop I work at are actually really outgoing and nice, and about 20 percent of the player base is just normal people. 50 percent are nerds that I'd never want to hang out with outside of the store, but are fine in small doses. But there is a 20 to 30 percent of people who are just messed up. Huge guys in their 40s who have never and will never touch a girl. The weird 30 something that plays yu-gi-oh with 12 year olds. Lots of pony stuff, there are quite a few magic players who come in with pony play mats, pony sleeves, pony everything. I was running a tournament the other week and this guy in a fedora was keeping his deck under his hat between rounds, and made a point to make a show of pulling it out to each of his opponents. Oh, the worst, though. The worst are the people who have prepubescent anime girls on everything. Their clothes, their playmat, their sleeves. I really wish we would just ban scantily clad anime girl stuff. One guy literally calls his stuff "jail bait stuff", and is so proud of himself about it.

Man. The two game shops I've been to for D&D are awesome I guess. Everybody there looks pretty much normal. The worst has been one gigantic lady in a loli-type dress and a dude wearing a homestuck necklace. But none of them have brought up anything inappropriate or anything while playing. I'm pretty sure on boardgame night, they've started playing the Ultimate werewolf game, since the DM was raving about how fun it was. So, yeah. If you're in Nashville, TN, and want to play tabletop rpg's, go to the game keep. It's still a bunch of nerds, but nobody's stinky, wears a fedora, or talks about gross cartoons/mlp. And they look well-stocked to me. Bored fucked around with this message at 16:19 on Jun 8, 2014 |

Full Metal Jackass posted:Wait, so this guy wears his hat and keeps a deck on his head under the hat? Yeah, between rounds, it was stupid. And, even if he didn't do that, I'd still have hated that kid. Everything he said had to be prefaced with, "I would like to....", he sounded robotic or as if he was following some "This is how to speak to people" guide.

The nerdy nasally voice guy, the guy who looked like someone just dumped a bucket of oil on him his forehead shined like a greasy streetlight (he also clearly cheated constantly), everyone was really overweight except my friend and I. Perhaps best/worst of all is the DM was a girl that you could tall the entire group wanted to get with and made really creepy jokes to constantly. Later in college after I had started smoking/drinking a lot one of the people I bought from invited me to play in their 2nd edition campaign they had weekly at Grindhouse. Grindhouse was a known partyhouse so I was surprised that my stoner friends a: played the game, b: played it in the place you'd go to if you were looking to do lines, and perhaps most surprising of all c: were playing 2nd edition. But yeah apparently all sorts love this game and even the people who spend their weekends pretty much entirely not sober like to light up and kill orcs and poo poo. I will say it's pretty surreal just playing DnD while the cops show up to break up a party going on in their back yard. I think one of the things about nerd games is there's basically two kind of people who play them: people who just like the game, and people who define their personality/themselves based on their hobbies. The ladder stands out far more for obvious and tends to be where all the bad stereotypes come from, but there's plenty of people who enjoyed the game but weren't using it as a way to fit in with nerd peers.

What is it about about tabletop gaming that attracts the crazies? On deployment in the military some people in my unit started a D&D group during the evenings, what started as a fun get-together to goof off, game and unwind, ended with "breeders" (their own words, used as an excuse for why things turned sexual) co-opting the sessions to attempt to play out weird fantasies that involved them trying to have sexual intercourse with the rest of our characters.
