Metropolis posted:I have no idea what happened there. Like, there's network decay, and then there's network implosion. From what I understand the network got too big for its britches and tried to play hardball with the creative talent and slash budgets across the board. This resulted in the early termination of two of its biggest shows (Mad Men and Breaking Bad both ended with two half-seasons because it was the most they could negotiate, up from having a single full season), The Walking Dead's infamous second season, and the firing of Frank Darabont. Only after they burned their goodwill with their existing talent and destroyed any hope of being known as an HBO-style creator-driven network all their new shows flopped, and welp here we are. After the steaming turd that was season 3 I am giving it one episode.

Anyone who hasn't already needs to go iTunes (or whatever) and watch episode 5 of Penny Dreadful. I know it's my fault for only halfway paying attention since I watch the show while working, but I am having a lot of trouble identifying a coherent narrative in Penny Dreadful. It just seems like a bunch of classic horror motifs being strung together without much purpose. I'm not convinced that it's worth going back over the episodes in my free time to see if it is any better that way.

Think of it like the first few episodes of The Wire. The plot is all over the place, a ton of characters are being introduced for seemingly no purpose and there isn't much narrative thrust, but when the finale rolls around, everything should come together and make sense. Now, I'm not saying Penny Dreadful is the next Wire, but I think it could come close.

I haven't seen episode five yet but no, there's no too much a narrative. I mean, the basic story is the search for the missing girl but its pretty much a whole lot of Victorian horror classics thrown together. I think its fun because I'm a sucker for Victorian horror and I think the actors are doing a good job, especially Eva Green, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend the show to people. If you aren't drawn in my the basic idea of "Penny dreadful" then its probably not worth your time. I mean, I like it and I still haven't made the time to watch the episode that aired four days ago.

Watch 30 commercial-free minutes of your lovely cop show to see the preview for next week's episode of Breaking Bad?

Orange is the New Black just referenced the "Ferris is just a figment of Cameron's imagination" theory. Best show ever*. Also, the Justified theme tune is perfect, and it's good they're spreading out the use of 'You'll never leave Harlan alive', so that they can keep Patty Loveless' version for the series finale. *Seriously though, I'm six episodes in and this is some of the most enjoyable TV I've ever watched.

Blue Mountain State is pretty great. It's on Netflix. It's basically Friday Night Lights: raunchy/smart sitcom edition. Anyone who skipped it like I did because it looked like a dumb jock "Football is awesome" comedy should give it a shot.

It's super fun and it's hilarious that they don't have the budget to even show them doing anything football related other than some basic training. Also I laugh every time the name Romanski appears on the screen. And Thad is one of the best comic characters ever. A good show.

I saw a commercial for some new show on Syfy that's about angels destroying the planet. On one hand it's probably (more likely definitely) going to be absolutely terrible but on the other hand I saw Christopher Egan from Kings in the commercial and I really liked him on that show and have not seen him in anything since. So I'm torn. Pretty sure I also saw Alan Dale too which makes me go against my better judgment and consider watching at least the first episode.

I hated the show when it first came on until I realized that. Yeah, Terry isn't Batman and the show doesn't pretend that he is. Terry is more like Spider-Man than anything, from the wise-cracking to the boring teen drama, and one of the show's main drives is how he bounces off of Batman when they work together. The conspicuous teenage target audience, with every other episode being a "very special" episode where Bane is turned into a cautionary tale on steroids or they do a story about addiction with holograms instead of drugs, definitely drags it down but it stands alongside the rest of the DCAU. Also, the most episode title of all time:

I finished watching season 1 of 24 last night, and it...kind of felt boring? I didn't really care at all about what happened with Jack's wife, and everyone felt like they had exactly two emotions: and . And then Jack's third emotion, . Should I bother watching more if the first season didn't really grab me?
