New Alestorm song. It's exactly what you will expect from Alestorm: Goofy as gently caress, has a simple and ludicrously catchy chorus and will be a loving blast at a BBQ party. Such a drat shame the album isn't due until August.

Get Mardraum. That seems like the medium of all you've described. If you like that, get Isa. I'd have thrown BTL out there but you already have that one and you liked it, so I don't know what else to recommend.

E: Actually now that I think of it, if you like Mardraum the next one after that I'd recommend is Axioma Ethica Odini. It's a LOT heavier than RIITIIR and has a lot of callback to the Below the Lights era.

If you really get into that try Ruun, Isa and Vertebrae, but those 3 aren't as immediately accessible.

E2: In fact, just get Axioma Ethica Odini, because god drat. But get Mardraum too. I think they'd both be up your alley.

Ok gonna shut up because I'm gonna just end up gushing for six loving hours, this is my favorite band by a country goddamn mile and I could talk about them until my voice gave out.

Alas, I guess there's something about French nationalism that encourages Famine-style shrieks, because the handful of other bands I can think of are also right wing. I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for but Mortefoutre resembles Peste Noire and are, as far as I know, apolitical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAMi0Rs9GZ0

As for the new Mastodon, it is definitely better than The Hunter. Though, there was that one song with the punky gang vocals, what the hell was that? Terrible idea for an otherwise good song.

So the new Misery Index is OK? My friend really likes them or something and this one seems to have pretty good riffs. I tend to lean more towards the Boltthrower side of Grind/Death stuff but the mixing on the bass is really good on this album (something that's really rare in Grind especially).

Also the new Goatwhore is pretty ace. I'm a big fan of Doomriders and this sounds a lot like that but a little but harder.

And it's happened so many times. Not just with Enslaved, but with so many bands I've seen over the years. Of course they have a brutal, mean persona (well, some anyway. I mean, Enslaved isn't like that but death metal bands often are) in their music but almost all of them I've ever met are just the most awesome friendly folks when they step off stage.

Karl Sanders is another example of just a great guy to talk to and hang out with at a show. A few friends and I were outside when he finished getting his stuff off the trailer, and he was just kinda standing outside the place. Nile wasn't up for another hour or so, so we went up to talk to him. Next thing you know, we're all having a half hour discussion about egyptian mythology and what it means to him and why he makes it the focus for his music.

Also, the guys from Vreid. All of them were really great and were hanging out with us in Germany after they opened for Enslaved. There was some technical problem with Enslaved's gear so we were just kinda sitting at the bar bullshitting with those guys for about 45 minutes. This was on the Isa tour, over 9 years ago, so a lot of the conversation sadly revolved around Windir and Valfar's death, and what it meant to them, but I still couldn't get over the fact that they just spent all that time talking to us like they would anyone else. Sture especially... but then, he did most of the talking. Him and Jorn.

Metal bands are just the best god drat bands.

e: You wanna know what sucks? Skeletonwitch came through last year and I couldn't make it. I was so pissed. But a friend of mine went, and he got a bit to talk to them while they were around and told them how his friend is a huge fan and work hosed him (me) out of the show.

They gave him this, for free, so he could give it to me:

Sorry for the crap pic... but dude. Metal bands. Just the best bands.

I've never hung out with a band after the show but I appreciated the effort that Bob Vigna (Immolation) and Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod) put into slapping hands with everyone that walked up to the stage after their respective shows. I also talked for a bit with the bassist from Gigan at the front door of a venue before seeing them open for Immolation. He's a nice if really dorky guy.
