You don't get the anime as hell abilities right off the bat but you do get some quality of life ones.

You get Reaction Boost, Finishing Plus (so an extra finishing move), Draw, 2 Lucky Luckys, MP Hastera and XP Zero.

two questions:

Do you know if KH2:FM+ is particularly harder than KH2? The Final Mix on 1.5 is noticeably more difficult than vanilla Kingdom Hearts, so I'm wondering if the same applies to KH2?

Also, how does Critical Mode differ from Proud? Somebody said something about Max HP a while back but I don't remember

If nothing else, FM+ has more challenging bosses to fight, who pretty much all make Sephiroth look like a total chump. Playing FM+ on Critical WILL force you to learn the mechanics of the game, and learn that magic is NOT useless. You'll especially learn that Reflectga is the most overpowered move in the entire game.

I'm not sure that I'm the best person to assess the difficulty of KH2:FM relative to vanilla because I've been playing KH2 and KH2:FM so much that, like Butt Ghost, I see everything in invincibility frames now. That being said, I would say that fights that were in vanilla are mostly unchanged difficulty-wise. New fights that they added in Final Mix I would say are considerably more difficult than anything in vanilla aside from Sephiroth. There's a notable spike in difficulty in FM at the start of TWTNW because that's when you fight Roxas and most people aren't prepared for it (he's ridiculously fast compared to any other non-optional boss in the game) and fighting any of the Absent Silhouettes without Second Chance/Once More is a substantial challenge if you haven't done them a million times.

Note: I didn't include non-Absent Silhouette optional bosses in this assessment. The Data Battles and Lingering Will will punish you relentlessly and are several echelons more difficult than anything else in the game and will likely require several sittings per fight to defeat.

Also, how does Critical Mode differ from Proud? Somebody said something about Max HP a while back but I don't remember

Critical mode halves the HP and MP you get. On Proud Mode at level 99 you'll have 120 HP, on Critical Mode you'll have 60 HP at level 99. All damage dealt to Sora is doubled. You only earn a quarter of the XP you normally earn from all sources.

You also start with 50 AP however, and you'll basically be able to equip every ability you get.

Indeed.

I'm disappointed that Riku, Kairi, and/or the BBS trio won't be the leads for the other games, but it'll be Sora again.

Seriously, you know how awesome it'd be to have Kairi team up with, I dunno, Terra Branford, Lucca, and Gadget?

Translation: We will milk this franchise until the very last possible drop has been wrung out.

Not that I terribly mind, as even the worst KH games have only been about average gaming experiences, so as long as they keep up this level of quality I don't give a poo poo how many million parts they make the story. It's all pretty much nonsense excuses to bash things with a giant key anyways.

Tetsuya Nomura literally makes this poo poo up as he goes. In all the interviews he's done, whenever some tricky plothole comes up he trails off, or says "make your own conclusions" (he specifically said it's fine for the player to believe whatever reason they like regarding Kairi getting a Keyblade from Riku in KH2)

To this day I have no idea why that even bothered to happen. It's not like Kairi DOES anything with her stupid Keyblade. I think she clumsily hits a couple of Shadows in a cutscene with it and that's it, and it's never mentioned again. Felt kinda pointless really.

At the end of DDD they imply (with a literal half-second of screentime) that Kairi is being trained for the final battle in KH3. Lea also.

Oh yeah of course he just makes it up as he goes, but there's clearly a bunch of stuff that's supposed to sound deep and impressive like the "Dark Seeker Saga" or "Chronicles" or "Keyblade War" or "Recusant's Sigil" (loving lol) and even the earlier games being taken over by a group of mysterious cloaked zipper men who don't have hearts (but actually they grow them back it turns out)

So I'm wondering if he's making a CWC or lazerbot style "This is what I think is really cool" thing, of if he knows how dumb these ideas are and is just taking the piss. Tails Gets Trolled vs. The Expendables.

Okay wait, what? So the Organization had hearts after all? How does that even work? I thought the whole point that was without hearts, which were basically tangible feelings and emotions, they couldn't actually feel anything except for the desperate desire to be whole again. If they had hearts the whole time, then what the hell was even the point? Why were they going around beating up Jack Sparrow and Mulan?

I've missed the last few games, so I'm curious to hear how this works.

That was one of the few actually interesting things in Kingdom Heart's convoluted clusterfuck of a plot, which I suppose has been reconnected away now.

It turns out in DDD that Nobodies grow a heart over time, and the entire plot of KH1 and 2 were Xehanort's machinations to make 13 of him in order to restore the χ-blade.

Nomura's slightly more self-aware than most Japanese game devs (That is to say very). He sort of makes jabs at how silly everything has gotten and has to explain his intentions in some places because he knows he left it really open-ended on accident sometimes.

I'd just like to point out that Xehanort was intending to put his heart into the bodies of two women (Larxene and Xion, the latter of which was meant to absorb Roxas if you recall).

Xehanort just gets creepier with each game.

Xion sort of has no gender. Technically within the canon she's like a shapeless blob of memories that started to gain sentience and tried to make her own personality.

Xigbar sees her as Ven, at another point she looked like Sora.

Hearts cannot be explained rationally and that's why every attempt to scientifically understand them in-universe has at best ended in failure and at worst almost caused the apocalypse.

Any time some stupid plot hole appears, the answer is "Hearts don't make any sense they just are."

Hope that helps.
