Heard that Rude song for the first time today. How is that song such a hit. It sounds like a Train/OneRepublic reject. Terrible, just terrible

There's some really unusual chords progressions in there, and yet they manage to make them work with such a good, catchy melody. Not to mention that the lyrics are Neil Tennant at his best. The video, well, most definitely has not stood the test of time. Those hats are iconic though.

Too many songs to choose from. I even like Home & Dry, which came out exactly at the right time to hit me and my high school "only rock music is proper music" stance right in the face.

If you go on petshopboys-forum.com, for an example, you'll find that Release as an album has a very bad rep. And while it's not really one of their strongest albums, I always thought that was ridiculous. Love Is A Catastrophe is the best Morrissey song ever written by someone else than Morrissey.

Some good pop: Ryn Weaver -- Octahate This song is really, really good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqaOM9tZi64 and pretty much has song of the summer locked down for me. Charli XCX co-wrote it and Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco and Passion Pit all co-produced it. It's just a lot of really good things put together. I'm really so unhappy that she doesn't have any other songs out yet. Also, this guy: Hozier Take Me to Church https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw Work Song -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upaI4D8gwfs He's been getting pretty big lately, but has been great for a while. He reminds me somewhat of Sam Smith/Mikky Ekko (kind of)/George Ezra: male vocalists who are just way too soulful. Not 100% sure he counts as pop, but he's definitely popular and I wasn't sure where else to post him, so hey. foutre fucked around with this message at 13:48 on Jul 6, 2014 |

A new japanese duo called FEMM has been pushing out new songs/videos for the last few months, and I think I really like this. It's well produced pop music, that seems pretty marketed towards a western audience unlike most other asian music. Seems highly likely that the singers are actually from a non-asian country as well. The Lady Gaga influences are _very_ strong in some of the songs. I'm pretty sure this is the only time I've seen a major (Avex studio produced) Japanese group launch with an website that supports English language, in addition to launching their music on iTunes outside of Japan at launch. They also apparently performed live in the US yesterday at some convention in Tulsa, so they seem to be marketing to a western audience. Anyways: Wannabe Very Lady Gaga-esque pop. Really good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwfNPtnPl4E White Noise Also a great Pop song. Bit more electric. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uir4lYQpk7k We Flood the Night Full on EDM pop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBeXcMUDF7k Also, this: Fxxk boyz get money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNtuAvGvRo8 Buffis fucked around with this message at 09:12 on Jul 13, 2014 |

Not bad. A little dated-sounding, but I wouldn't mind hearing them on the radio. Also is this the right thread to talk about how bad Robin Thicke's new album is bombing? Kinda sucks, I loved The Evolution of Robin Thicke, but his music/persona has changed so much. PUGGERNAUT fucked around with this message at 14:58 on Jul 13, 2014 |

Sweet christ people 'Trouble in Paradise' is so good. Like really really good. Theres a bunch of 'Let's Dance' guitars on this thing and some synthesizers and a dab of Eurythmics. It's great. So far it's 2/2 for both 'Taking Their Sweet Time To Release The Second Album After Their 2009 Debut' members La Roux and Little Boots although it seems that Little Boots is making good progress with her third. Let's hope the streak continues. Back to the studio. Oh and the second Jessie Ware album is called 'Tough Love' and is hopefully coming this year.

Cool to see some new Charli XCX material by reading this thread, but I'm bummed that she's moving away from the gothier electronic sound of True Romance. She considers herself pop and is definitely moving in a more pop trendy direction. On the other hand I get a huge heartache every time I watch one of her videos because she looks and acts a lot like my college girlfriend from 25 years ago who dumped me hard and I never got over. Ughhhhhhhh I love staring at her so much.
