I'm actually curious how it works out. Standard retirement pay is calculated off of the average base pay of your highest 36 months of pay. Do they calculate it in this case by just going back to when he picked up colonel and going back 3 years from then? If that's the case and he picked up O-6 let's say 10 years ago he's probably pulling in around 4500 a month or so in pension.

To answer your question he gets his highest three years of paygrade that he last honorably served at, and not based on current pay tables but the payables at the time of his honorable service at whatever grade they retire his rear end at. In essence he gets to retire but everything after three years of LtCol didn't count. His % is locked in, assuming he didn't take the redux or join long enough ago that he's under the old retirement system from the 80's. Possible considering his rank.

The fact that he only got convicted of adultery and inappropriate relationships (as opposed to an actual sex crime like the assault and forcible sodomy charges he was originally facing) and will thus avoid any jail time is because the prosecution's case collapsed after it became known that their star witness (said female Captain) had issues with telling the truth under oath (i.e. she basically perjured herself).

Incidentally the lead prosecutor actually stepped down from the case over his belief that the star witness was getting away with perjury.

I'm not going to argue that the elite aren't lining their pockets, but they are spending significant sums in diversifying [re: developing] their economies. After oil runs out, numerous countries still have significant natural gas and mineral reserves to exploit (qatar, bahrain, saudi arabia, uae, etc.)

Saudi Development:

UAE:

Afghanistan also has a shitload of untapped mineral wealth and natural gas reserves, though I doubt we'll ever get to extract them: http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-war-is-worth-waging-afghanistan-s-vast-reserves-of-minerals-and-natural-gas/19769

There's also that thing where nato has, and will always have, numerous bases in the middle east.

So yes, most middle eastern countries are actively developing their countries & economies. And it's not going to become some backwater due to the inevitable loss of oil.

I guess I just assume when someone says oil it includes gas because the oil & gas industry is basically one entity imo so the natural gas infrastructure mentioned is basically saying "yeah they invest in infrastructure, they build oil wells!!!" heh

Not to mention that something like 75% of new private sector jobs are taken by cheap foreign labor anyway. The primary requirement for any Saudi getting a decent job in the private sector is having some kind of connection to the royal family. It's estimated that roughly a third of the youth and women in Saudi Arabia are unemployed but there's no way to know for sure because it's taboo in Saudi Arabia to talk about it. Fixing the unemployment of women in the country is particularly difficult because of how backward the country is, god forbid a woman and a man that aren't related interact with each other. Women can't even drive in Saudi Arabia!

Oil is 95% of their exports and 70% of government revenue, it's not going to be easy to pacify the populace with welfare packages once the oil dries out, especially with an estimated 50-60% of the population under the age of 25.

you've lead me to google stuff about Dubai's poo poo problem and apparently Oman also has the same problem. At one point parts of streets, parking lots and parks in Dubai were flooded with sewage and they hired cheap chinese labor to clean the streets. In addition to trucking it out to the desert they also dump it into the storm drains so the coast of Dubai is literally full of poo poo.

Counterpoint almost every coastal country does this, it's pretty much a given when pulling into a foreign port that the port itself will be a disgusting cesspool. I've heard the worst offenders are in Asia but even the Euros (at least Italians and French) do it.

The eastern territories that the separatists are failing to keep control over as the army has been able to get a modicum of it's poo poo together. Kiev now controls most relevant border crossings and strategic positions. The separatists hold a bunch of symbolic government buildings. Local civilians have gone from confronting the army to mostly hiding in basements or leaving the cities until the fighting is over, willingness to play human shields seemingly greatly diminished. The separatists also just don't have enough Russian help to cope with the army air and armour.

All in all Kiev is winning this one, unless Russia gets involved for real. President Willy Wonka seems quite certain he has this in the bag, judging from the peace proposal. And I don't think more Russian saber rattling is enough to change facts on the ground. Sending arms and advisers does not seem to have been enough, and with the separatists losing control over most the border crossings I don't think they will be able to send enough to turn any tides.

Crimea is still lost though, and noone is going to help them get it back.

Good news guys, the VA is doing great:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/21/u...tw-nytimes&_r=0

quote:

All of the 470 senior executives at the Department of Veterans Affairs received annual ratings over the last four years indicating that they were “fully successful” in their jobs or even better, according to data released at a congressional hearing on Friday, despite delays in processing disability compensation claims and problems with veterans’ access to the department’s sprawling health care system.

None of the department’s senior executives received either of the two lowest of five possible job ratings, “minimally satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory,” in any of the past four fiscal years.

The data also showed that in 2013, nearly 80 percent of the senior executives were rated either “outstanding” or as having exceeded “fully successful” in their job performance, and that at least 65 percent of the executives received performance awards, which averaged around $9,000. Only about 20 percent received the middle of the five ratings.
...
In all, the department paid performance awards to senior executives that totaled $4.7 million in 2010 and $2.7 million in the most recent fiscal year.
...
Many administrators’ bonuses were tied partly to whether their facilities met patient wait-time goals, including being able to see a doctor within 14 days. When a shortage of doctors and other factors made it impossible for many facilities to come anywhere close to those standards, many administrators and patient schedulers manipulated data and used other tactics to make the numbers look better than they were.

And I absolutely adore this excuse:

quote:

The data also showed that in 2013, nearly 80 percent of the senior executives were rated either “outstanding” or as having exceeded “fully successful” in their job performance, and that at least 65 percent of the executives received performance awards, which averaged around $9,000. Only about 20 percent received the middle of the five ratings.

Veterans Affairs officials sought to play down the data, saying that only 15 senior executives across the entire federal government had received either of the two lowest ratings in the most recent year — suggesting that the high ratings enjoyed by V.A. officials were not out of line with those of their counterparts at other government agencies.
