Basically, knights have always been the last units to fill in your active roster. In Shining Force 1 and 2, the only knights who had top tier stats were either not worth the effort (Arthur) or came at an opportunity cost that wasn't worth it (Eric). When you get to the Gaiden games which have much smaller rosters, Dawn is the best you get and she still doesn't stand out as particularly good.

Dantares, Cybel, and not-Dantares are literally the first knights you ever get in Shining Force that are ready top tier material. If it makes any more sense, Donhort suffers from being heavily overshadowed by two other units, one of whom has superior movement and the other having a superior support.

e: The irony is that unlike archers and mages who got a ton of mechanical upgrades in their favor, the aforementioned knights just have completely jacked stats for no real reason.

Talk about a bummer of a section. From two long drawn out ship battles where Grantack turns into Navi 2.0, with a boring monocle villain like Crewart, to a delayed tie-in to Scenario 1 and losing two party members at the end of it with one god tier (Julian) and the other only decent (Zero) after a slew of boring archers, I'm starting to wonder if this game had some holes filled in by temps because the Saturn was on its last legs.

Maybe Donhort went just really stupid in my playthrough because I honestly don't think he attacked once or was attacked once minus the defense system fight.

I'm not sure intheso and I could of had two more different playthroughs it seems.

Can I reach an enemy this turn?
  yes -> Attack.
no -> Pick a random spot within two spaces of Medion and move there

Earnest is the exact opposite from Arthur: hits like a freight train with little to no effort expended, but turns kind of crap if you level-grind because all of his gains are early. He's the closest any of the earlier games get to a Dantares.

The only problem is that Shining Force 1 was a game where centaurs had to compete with Guntz for the best Knight weapon in the game. Well, that and the fact he joins after Chapter 4, and is thus stuck in the half of the game where everything is forest and mountain terrain.

Shining Force 1 hates centaurs almost as much as it hates birdmen.

Oh, I can and will use every flier in existence, along with archers, because I'm a sucker for those character types. (I also tend to load my armies out with female characters if I have them because, but whatever). Games like SF and FE don't really require optimized armies - you can almost always get by with whatever kind of craziness you want.

Yeah, counting May or Lyle isn't really the same; they're far more archers-with-centaur-movement than they are knights-with-archer-range. They're good not so much because centaurs themselves are good characters, but because your other options for archers in the first two Shining Force games are so terrible. Medion's archer-biased crew makes Hans and Diane look absolutely worthless, to say nothing of Elric/Janet/Rhode.

My big problem with Rhode is his movement. He gets slowed down by everything and he has poo poo move to start with, meaning it takes him forever to get in position. Archers and mages should never have to take hits if you're doing it right (particularly once you get up to the Robin Arrow), so bad attack plus terrible movement renders him totally useless for me.

Part 59: MGS sure had a lovely Saturn port

Indeed. We need to find Garvin and the emperor.

Hey... Uryudo, is it me or does this town seem creepier than the last time we visited during the peace conference?

Everyone is staring at us as if we were suspicious.

Garvin is probably in the Governor's Mansion in the government district. Can we possibly sneak in?

It will be difficult to get inside. There are always guards at the entrance and those entering are strictly screened.

Besides, we need solid evidence before confronting Garvin. Will he slip up and show his true colours?

If they make the first move, then it would be easier to justify any action we take against them, right?

In order for Garvin to construct this floating city, the wealth of the people was sucked dry. Don't you think this place is cursed?

It's good to see you, Honesty. Everyone has been worried because we expected you sooner.

It took longer than expected to conceal the Seagate.

Honesty, I agree it would be easier for us to take action if they initiate, but I wouldn't expect them to make a move.

Unable to spot our headquarters, I flew around above the city, and that's when I noticed. There is an unusually large number of soldiers in this particular area.

A lot of soldiers?

Yes. They were apparently looking for your headquarters. They surrounded it once they found it.

Oh, come on. It was the same HQ we used when we were here in chapter 1. The Saraband guard somehow manages to be even more incompetent than everyone else.

It seems we were naive to think they wouldn't make the first move. Thinking they probably wouldn't try to hit us here...

So, is Garvin finally taking off his sheep's clothing to reveal his true wolfish nature?

What should we do?! We've sealed our own fate!

If that's the case, we should strike at them before they have a chance to strike us!

I like the way you think, Syntesis.

No! This isn't the Empire. If we initiate a battle without a valid reason, they will have every right to arrest us.

Given the situation, all we can do is pay the Governor's Mansion a visit after we have collected enough evidence.

I'd like to ask you, Prince Medion, if you would gather the evidence. Normally, we would all do this, but the rest of us are in danger of being arrested.

Good thinking! Since Prince Medion is well known in Saraband, they won't be able to do anything rash.

Geez, it's even starting to affect the girls who travel around with Medion on a regular basis.

OMGHSH Counter: 6

Not only that. Prince Medion is also very popular here, so he will be able to communicate freely with the villagers.

You are a man of action, Prince Medion. I knew you would gladly accept this responsibility.

And now it's time for Medion to wander around Saraband by himself. There's no new treasures to find, but the NPC layout is quite different and people have new things to say.

Saraband guard: Making everyone else look good.

OMGHSH Counter: 7

:j: I'd like to meet him. I hear he's really tough.

:j: I bet his mother worries... I wish I could meet him, just to see how cool he really is.

OMGHSH Counter: 9

:stonk: OMGHSH Counter: 10 :stonk:

Okay, now that Medion is done wooing the women of Saraband, it's time to actually get things done here.

:thearth I met him before; he's a very brave lad. I used to be young and brave like him. Would you like me to use my abilities again to help you? I'm very happy to hear that. I want to do my part in this war. I will devote my strength as a chivalrous knight to your cause.

:toot:

Now, before you all go off making your assumptions, it's been confirmed that, despite all evidence, this is not the same Arthur from Shining Force 1. From an interview at Shining Force Central:

Yasuhiro Taguchi posted:

The story from Holy Ark to SF3 belongs to a different era from previous Shining Series. If you see characters with the same name, please consider them as different people. But they do look very similar. Perhaps people in SF1 and SF2 came to the world of SF3 through metempsychosis?

Personally, I like the idea that Shining Force 1's Arthur became a legendary hero, after whom Shining Force 3's Arthur was named and consequently fashioned himself after. I mean, the alternate theory is that Arthur somehow got trapped on Creed's Desktop Kingdom, preventing him from aging for centuries, and then somehow escaped to Shining Force 3's continent. Let's face it, that theory is far more outlandish.

I planned to visit your headquarters and offer my services, but there have been some strange things going on, so I was keeping an eye on that. I pledge to protect and defend you on your journey.

Anyways, Arthur suffers from the same problem as his predecessor in that he's flimsy as hell, with the tradeoff being that he can cast magic. Also, Arthur specializes in spears which is absolutely useless to him for now. Let's fix this at Saraband's newly opened weapon and item shops.

That will give his stats a temporary fix. Lances are the only weapon Arthur can use in scenario 2 that will give him medium magic scaling, which is why I'm handing him one now. There will be a spear that confers high magic scaling, but that's not available until scenario 3.

There's plenty more to buy at the weapon shop, but those two items for Arthur just ran me flat broke. There's even a mithril blacksmith that I didn't get to use. :(

Since that's about all there is to do in Saraband, the way to jumpstart the next section of plot is to go to eastern Saraband (where Synbios started) and then try to leave.

I'm rather amused that Syntesis doesn't try to ride Honesty like a sane person, but instead stands on Honesty's back in mid-air like a daredevil.

What happened?

They must have waited for you to leave, before making their move.

They knew you could not be arrested, so they waited until we were alone.

I overhead them talking. They said now that they'd taken your army away from you, they were going to keep them locked up. We must rescue them as soon as possible!

Hey, wait a minute! I think I know how we can save them! Back during the crisis here, I was passing by the governor's mansion when I saw General Crewart entering the mansion through a secret passage. Do you remember?

I do recall your saying something to that effect, Syntesis...

Then let's go to the same place, and try using the key Crewart dropped to enter.

Who has this key?

Prince Medion has the key we found on Crewart.

I'm worried about something else. I'm going to check on the situation with the Seagate. I don't think I'm cut out for a stealth operation anyway.

A centaur with huge flapping wings, not fit for stealth? This might be the first smart thing anyone in this scenario has said.

They wouldn't dare arrest Prince Medion. I think we'll be relatively safe. Even if we're spotted, we'll probably just be escorted out.

Well, be careful. Just try to make sure no one sees you in the first place. Good luck. I'm heading to the Seagate.

Let's get going as well. Head towards our headquarters in the west district. The governor's mansion is nearby. We can check the walls for any sign of his hidden passage.

We can do that, but first we need to get something even more important.

:j: These flowers sometimes bloom on the borders of this territory. They are in very high demand. People often use them for events like weddings or funerals.

Well, isn't that cruel hindshadowing.

Also, Medion gets the cut flowers as a result, which we'll need later on. If I took the cut flowers from scenario 1, stuck them on Julian to transport to scenario 2, and then pulled them off him before he left, we wouldn't need to do this. Really weird and I have no idea why it's programmed this way.

Anyway, the force is currently cut down to Medion, Syntesis, and Arthur if you recruit him. This is actually very annoying because I forgot to manage my inventory and have to drop a few mithrils as a result. Not that I need them, but it would have been nice to hock them for extra cash. If, for some reason that somebody other than Medion was carrying the key we need to pop open the secret door, Syntesis will show up with it in her inventory.

Use the key from Medion's inventory here, and it will slide open and take us into a new area.

:hist101: It looked kind of like Prince Medion, but I can't be sure...

And welcome to Shining Force 3's lovely Metal Gear Solid knockoff! Thankfully this is fairly easy and short, but it requires just enough finesse that I have to turn off my emulators fast-forward to get through this section. The first floor of this little maze is easy enough. Go to the right here and there's a single guard scanning the hallways to the stairway to the next section:

The yellow cone is the guard's vision range, so we need to avoid that. Going the other path at the beginning just loops around to a section that's impossible to get past, and it yields no treasure. Let's not waste our time there.

Immediately on the second floor, there's a weird hall with three pillars and a guard that scans in three directions.

Naturally, I goof it up on my first go.

:hist101: Oh, it's you, Prince Medion. I didn't expect you to be wandering around in here. This area is strictly off limits. Let me escort you back outside.

And then you're dropped off at the front of Garvin's mansion and have to start over again. Which involves three screen transitions. After this, I start using save stats to save myself time.

The second floor has a detour where guards actually have moving patrols. There's three of them in this room, but if you shadow one of them from a short distance, you'll never get caught.

And the prize is a stairway down with a treasure room! In here we find a large and a small mithril, along with a new rapier and new wand. At this point, my inventory is packed full of items I can't drop, because I was a dumbass who packed Syntesis with mithrils without actually selling them. Oops! This becomes a minor problem in the next fight.

Medion, however, cannot argue with a new mithril weapon.

And upon ascending from the treasure room, Medion gets instantly spotted. Nothing much to be done about that, but the rapier and wand were well worth it.

If we progress along the dungeon, there's a pair of double doors in a hallway. One of them leads to the exit (which the game won't actually let you do) and the other leads inside the mansion!

It's a bunch of random NPCs that have little bearing on the plot, but there is something we really want here.

:hellyeah:

Once you get to the right room, you'll see this dialogue between a pair of guards.

:hist101: Strange things? I don't know what you mean.

:cop: Oh, nevermind...

:hist101: What kind of things are you talking about?

:cop: I was wondering if Medion has tried to give himself up since we arrested his army. Well, I have to get back to my patrol around the prison area. I'll let you know if I see anything!

And of course we follow after him.

I don't know what Garvin is thinking. Please, be reasonable and let us out of here.

:cop: After we abducted Domaric, we thought you might come back here. That's why you're all locked in those cells now. The plot to abduct Emperor Domaric was not only Saraband's doing. The Empire was in on it as well.

The emperor is here, and the Empire was involved? But that... that can't be true!

Uryudo, you idiot. We've already established that Crewart and Arrawnt are in on it.

:cop: You're lucky I'm kind enough to tell you. It certainly is the truth.

Well, if you want to be kind, how's about letting us out of these cells?

:cop: Yeah, right. You really think I'm gonna let you out? Prince Medion should be grateful we've removed so many bad elements from the Empire. Some army you are.

So what's going to happen? You're going to leave us down here in the dark and hope we disappear?

:cop: Well, we all have to leave this world one day. Sometimes there's no point trying to cling to life. Something you'll come to understand down here!

You've underestimated Prince Medion. And furthermore, once the citizens find out what has happened here, what do you think they'll have to say about it?

:cop: They're never going to find out what happened to you.

Such underhanded tactics, I can hardly believe it. You won't get away with this!

:cop: Oh, I'm sure you'd love to get your weapons back, but I'm the guy with the key.

We heard everything. I can't believe these schmucks.

Dear translators: That was an incredibly poor choice of words. Please revise and resubmit.

You're in trouble now!

It's Prince Medion!

I had faith you would come for us, Prince Medion.

:cop: You fools! I'll signal for the guards. Do you seriously think you'll be able to escape when they get here? They'll be here shortly. You should've ran back to town while you had the chance. Now you will die down here instead!

He called more Saraband guards. We'd better make this rescue a quick one!

Our equipment is on the table, and this guard has the key. Get it from him!

As hilarious as it would be to complete this map without actually freeing anyone from prison, literally every single enemy has a spear and can kick Medion's rear end in two hits. We actually have to get that key pretty quickly and start springing the rest of our team free.

I forgot to take a screenshot of the map at the start, but suffice it to say that it's an L-shape. Two guards immediately spawn behind Medion, Syntesis, and Arthur.

The white ring is doing wonders for Arthur, but that weapon disadvantage is rocking Medion's face off. Too bad I didn't bring any healing items!

And then a pair of guards spawn at the other end of the map. Luckily, these guys take a while to flank us, and they're going to get ambushed on their way there.

Arthur is fed the kill on the guard with the key, since he has the highest movement out of the three available characters. This will allow him to unlock a cell almost every turn.

Syntesis and Medion have to team up to block off the guards that keep filtering in. Two more guards have spawn in the back, and Syntesis has to burn some MP so trouble doesn't start.

All the guards carry healing drops, and since Medion can get killed in two hits, I have to drop a large mithril in order to make room for one.

At the end of the second turn, a deluge of soldiers shows up, with the boss. Yes, there are only spears on this map, and Medion's army has a shortage of axes. It would be annoying if I didn't have more magic than I knew what to do with.

Arthur springs Hazuki and she has to grab her crap off the table. Since everyone's in jail, they're missing all their items, but all the items are sitting on that middle table and will automatically jump back into the character's inventory when they search it.

Being stripped of equipment renders fighters useless, but casters can still use spells without them. Granted, they will be missing their magic scaling bonus from their weapons, but...

Eh, I'll take it. All the guards meander by Hedoba's cell near the rear exit, and as a result Hedoba ends up doing more damage than any other character without ever being released from her cell.

Hell, she even picks off a guard without a weapon. In retrospect, that was kind of stupid since she gained no support or weapon ranks for doing so, but god drat if I'm not going to flex the might of magic every chance I get.

The front exit turns into a bit of a clustefuck with a ton of guards flooding in. Unfortunately, the positioning is such that Syntesis and Hazuki can't wipe out that lined up trio in two shots.

Hey David, how you doing?

Arthur is gonna let Waltz out instead.

Everyone gets returned with their equipment afterwards regardless of whether or not you free them during the fight. Because of this, I'm perfectly fine with letting Hedoba snipe all these idiots through the bars.

Getting Uryudo out is pretty important, though, since you really his healing.

Waltz is really far behind, and the only reason she's in this fight is the loss of Julian, Donhort, and Zero. The 18 damage came from her level 2 critical, which is pretty pathetic.

Hedoba rocks three more guards with the power of Freeze 2 without any weapon scaling or supports.

And I continue to keep David locked up because I think it's funny.

Hedoba picks off one more guard with her dwindling MP. Even if I had David trained up and with a weapon, Hedoba would still be more useful while naked and locked in a jail cell.

The guards finally meet up with the bulk of the army at the bend of the corner. There's not much to say about this since Hedoba either killed or softened up nearly everybody.

Campbell and Medion also party in this corner and bust some barrels which will open another treasure room after the fight. I'll save you the suspense and admit that all it has is a potion and a small mithril, nothing too exciting.

The silver knight gets aggressive like every bad mini-boss.

How appropriate that this happens right outside of Hedoba's cell.

I thought you might have left too late. Thanks for coming to rescue us, Syntesis!

When the Saraband soldiers surrounded our headquarters, Grantack knew there was little chance for success. So we had to surrender, and we were disarmed.

The number of soldiers they brought was amazing! It must have been the entire Saraband Guard! Governor Garvin has a secret entrance to his mansion. Is that how you got in?

I've got the key... We decided to come here, even though Honesty couldn't come with us. Were you worried about us?

What? Prince Medion, the danger of being the commander can have dire consequences. Try to bear this in mind for battle.

However, we now know where the emperor is.

He's here in Saraband, just as General Rogan thought he was.

Prince Medion, Emperor Domaric must be inside Garvin's mansion.

There should be a route to the courtyard from here. We can pass through the main gardens to reach Garvin's mansion.

Then let's get moving, Prince Medion. Emperor Domaric must be saved!

See I let Syntesis get the key spring Hazuki and then gave her they key. Hazuki's speed and movement allowed her to move first and get someone every turn and with shurikens and a white ring equipped basically the guys with the halberds couldn't do anything to her. Also with your love of magic you don't seem to be using soul steal all that much. Syntesis was the all star of this fight at the beginning because of it for me. Gave her all the happy cookies I found plus the silver ring and with the guards 2 luck she was basically hitting 100% of the time. Then again I guess you couldn't build the trio if she was one shotting everything.

As always, you are too stern, my dear father. You still don't understand my concerns. If Mageron were to succeed you and become the next emperor, Destonia would remain in turmoil.

And you think you could do better? You've betrayed me, joined those heretic monks and compromised the Empire! You're a wicked man to have organized your own father's abduction.

Hahaha, what a loving hypocrite you are, Domaric.

You should be very proud of him.

So, you've been planning this for a while, just to realize your crazy ambitions! Also I see Arrawnt was not the only one behind my abduction. Saraband's Governor Garvin was also part of the plot! You don't realize what you've done. You think you have many allies and everything is going your way. But soon you will understand the price of your overanxious ambitions. Hmm, you're beginning to understand already, aren't you?

What? What are you talking about?!

It's a good idea to have allies, but you should always choose them wisely if you want to remain the leader. Lest you become nothing but a puppet. And that's exactly what you are!

You think I'm a puppet? Well, your opinion matters not. To realize my plan I needed the most powerful allies I could find. Power is the key to everything! All effective countries are ruled sternly. That's why I should be the next emperor. Only a strong leader can rule the Empire. Maybe your opinion will change when you discover your most trusted ally is working for me, my dear father.

Fiderit... I appointed you my son's advisor to teach him the role of an emperor. I just can't believe you have betrayed me.

Children and parents have the same blood in their veins... Arrawnt is nothing but your clone. He's waiting for an $accidental' death in order to take the throne. Like you, in the past, he wants to rule the entire country. Do you see the similarities? You seem to forget you were the fourth prince of the royal family yet you managed to become emperor. Is it strange Arrawnt hopes for the same fate?

I can become emperor with only two deaths. If you were to die, only one person would remain in my way.

The cut to Medion here is a bit ironic, since it's Mageron who's obstructs Arrawnt's path to the throne, not Medion.

Now we're sure Emperor Domaric is inside! We finally understand their plot! However, the mansion is well protected. This is a crucial battle! If we win, we will be able to rescue the emperor. I'm sure you can do it, Prince Medion!

Sure thing Grantack, but we have one little problem.

What the gently caress are you doing in here?

:frogout:

A big courtyard that's mostly symmetrical. The other half only contains the golden Saraband guards without the mercenary and the silver knight to back them up. Once again, it's a ton of spears. There's also a trio of a silver knight, a master mage, and a high priest in the middle.

Tornado 4 is some ugly stuff, so we'll want to peace him out as quickly as possible.

My first attempt at the map ends incredibly quickly because I forgot that enemy stats have finally caught up to post-promotion growths and Medion isn't wearing a defensive accessory. Oh well, I'd rather he die than any of my mages.

On my second try, I also realize that the new background for this map creates some terrible camera shots. If there's one thing that doesn't improve in this series at all, it's the use of the 3D camera.

Arthur kicks things off this time with a cast of Freeze 1. It's pretty good, considering he has no supports or weapon scaling. It's mostly due to the fact that he has the highest base affinities in the game. The horrible trade-off is that he comes in too late to farm out the proper supports and he has a tiny MP pool. Still a cool character, though.

The disappearance of Julian, Donhort, and Zero means that I'm forced to pull Waltz back in. She's quite a few levels behind, and I had to hock a few mithrils to afford a new weapon for her. At least this means she has extended archer range.

Medion whacks the only enemy on the map with an axe, with spectacular results.

Arthur and Hera bust through to the other side of the courtyard. Another nice thing about Arthur is that he has different magic resists from other knights and sports decent resistances to the main four elements (fire, ice, air, lightning) without having any weaknesses.

Arthur does have incredibly poor defense, though. Remember, he's wearing the white ring which gives him +10 DEF. He'd be crumbling like paper mache without it.

Finally, he picks up his first rank in lances and we get to see him do the same criticals as Campbell. Normally, I would switch Arthur to halberds for variety, but the best magic scaling weapon for Arthur is a lance, so there's not much choice here.

Hedoba picks up a very important spell. Other than that, there's not much to say. It's just sweeping up a bunch of ordinary mooks that we've already seen. We just have to be a little more careful than usual since their stats are finally high enough to pose a threat and we don't have a naked Hedoba sniping them from her jail cell.

Hedoba also wants this. She's been using the same wand since the start, so going from low to high magic scaling is going to crank her damage up a good notch.

Since this map had zero tricks, you'd be correct to guess that there's a second part. I take my time to gather everyone in front of the door first so everyone can act on the same turn. I think the game intends for you to only send in half your force while the other half continues to tussle with the guards outside, but gently caress that.

But before we head inside, we also nab the treasures sitting around.

You... You knew they were coming?! So you were trying to stall until their arrival with useless conversation?!

It's time to finish him, Arrawnt! No matter the situation, he tried to fool us one time too many and he almost succeeded!

I'm really sorry, my poor father. Your ploy failed. Nothing can save you father. Your life is mine now.

Don't I wish. :sigh: I mean, we all know he's going to survive, just by virtue of showing up at the end of scenario 1.

Wait, Arrawnt! I can't let you kill your own father. Such a job is not suited for a prince. Please, leave it to me.

You? The emperor's former right hand? You really want to finish him, Fiderit?

You still don't believe in me? Please, let me do it! I want to kill him with my own hands!

Mwahaha! This will be really interesting! Let the show begin!

Fiderit... I trusted you... I can't believe you would...

Now!

Fiderit? What are you doing?!

I have never betrayed anyone. My loyalty has always been with the emperor! I will never allow anyone to harm him!

It should not be a surprise that Fiderit's Japanese name was indeed “Fidelity”. The pattern of centaurs being named after virtues implies funny things for Arthur.

So what about his abduction?! Don't tell me he knew about it?!

Yes, he did. Emperor Domaric sent me to you as a spy.

I can't believe it! Domaric used our plan for his own gain! He knew his abduction would start a war with the Republic!

This can't be! Tell me it's not true father! That's why you always told me I would never become the next emperor?! You wanted to make me angry so I would enact my plan!

Yep, Domaric abuses his children so it's easier for him to emotionally manipulate them. He is literally George Bluth.

We underestimated Emperor Domaric. He used us from the very beginning, Prince!

You've finally shown your true face, father! We should call for help, Garvin!

Oh, Bulzome! Please come to our aid! Dessheren! Dessheren!

Did you call me, Garvin?

Have you recovered from the wounds you suffered at Elbesem Temple?

Basanda has recovered and left for Lookover, but I've not fully recovered. Did you call me because of Domaric?

Yes, but not only Domaric...

The Medion army is here!

The Medion army?! But, you told me you'd taken care of them!

I'm sorry... they escaped. Medion managed to free the others and now they are all here!

And so you want to borrow the power of the Bulzome Sect... Alright, leave them to me! I am a bit weak, but I think I can defeat the Medion army! Fear the power of Dessheren!

Eh, that's nothing to fear.

The second half of the map. If you squint really hard at the mini-map, you can see the golden blips that represent the white knights guarding Fiderit and Domaric.

Dessheren's stats have taken a hell of a hit compared to before. She's even using a different weapon from when she squared off against the Rainbloods:

The rest of the map is masked monks and harpies, all uninteresting old news. A few monks will diverge off to tangle with Domaric's white knights, but it's uninteresting NPC vs NPC action.

At the start of the fight, four more monks spawn near Dessheren. Why they don't start on the map, nobody knows.

The game's inability to account for height differences is always fun. And then Medion finishes off the mage with a critical specific to his weapon that I didn't manage to capture.

General Fafhard was defeated by the Synbios army.

What? Are you sure, Yasha?

I can't believe the brave and powerful General Fafhard has been defeated by Conrad's son.

High Priest Fiale is our last hope. I have ordered Fafhard's son, Braff, to execute our plan sooner than expected.

So, Synbios has finally reached Flagard. And what of Palsis?

Basanda was heading for him, but I don't think we can count on her at the moment. I also doubt Braff can be relied upon so soon after hearing of his father's defeat,

His father has been killed. He will need some time to clear his head. Do we really need his help?

Braff has a big role to play. He will need to prevent Aspia from receiving reinforcements.

As you requested, the Seagate was captured. They will not be able to use it anymore.

Good, now go with Prince Arrawnt. I will hold off the Medion army while you invade Aspia.

Yes, I agree. Cover our escape, Dessheren. Remember, our main objective is the invasion of Aspia!

We have almost won the war. Act wisely!

Don't worry, I'll take care of everything. We wouldn't have had all these setbacks if Medion hadn't helped Synbios so much.

Your last son doesn't share your ambition. He's causing problems for all of us.

Especially Mageron, who wants the war to end so he can chill and write poetry.

I can't believe it. Medion...

You were really impressed with him, but it seems you misjudged him.

It seems Arrawnt is right.

Yasha, Arrawnt, and Garvin all disappear in a poof of ninja magic.

Good, they've made it to the Seagate. Come on, Medion! If you want to save Emperor Domaric, you have no choice but to defeat me. And that's not likely!

Medion answers the challenge by using Mist Feint, the weapon critical, to one-shot a monk.

It doesn't take much work to climb up the stairs and get to Dessheren, who is chilling behind Garvin's desk. Half the monks on the map waste their lives trying to get to Domaric, who doesn't even have stats in this fight.

I did, however, overextend a bit with Campbell. I need to stop mismanaging my supports. :saddowns:

Whatever, let's get this mini-boss over with. First step is to get Hera to protect all my mages with Resist.

Next step is to laugh at the weak-rear end power of Phoenix 2. To be fair, Dessheren did cast it on four people, but it's still hilarious.

You probably know how the rest goes.

Sadly, while Hedoba and Syntesis do ~33 damage a piece, Hazuki is falling behind a bit due to Tornado's weak base power and the lack of medium or high scaling magic on her weapons. Thankfully, she'll be getting Tornado 4 soon, which will give her another damage spike.

The AI realizes how futile it is to try and kill my strongest characters, so it aims for the weakest instead.

Before we finish off Dessheren (I did nearly 2/3rds of her life with just the mages in a single turn), we need to pick up a mithril halberd that's going to sell for good money.

Might as well beat Dessheren over the head to draw things out for potential support points.

And that's all there is to it. I'm starting to wonder when I'm going to run into a boss that I can't wipe out in two turns.

You! If only I had fully recovered... you would have been no match for me!

I don't know, do better stats come with better magic resists? If not, I wouldn't put any money on it.

Wh... What's happening to me? I can't die here... like this...

I will not let you die.

Th... that's the voice of... Yasha? Did you come to... help me?

And Yasha poofs Dessheren with more ninja magic.

I'll see you again, Prince Medion.

We must go after Garvin!

The time to retake the land previously lost has finally come. I've been waiting for this for many years. I won't allow Garvin to realize this dream in my place.

But don't you know about the invasion of the Destonian capital by the Bulzome Sect? The situation there is dire.

The Walcuray is going to attack. Destonia Castle may be in grave danger right now. Bresby came to us, asking for help to protect the capital.

What do you propose we do?

I think we should return to Destonia with Fiderit as soon as possible.

We're not going to return quite yet, Campbell. You've already lent some soldiers to Bresby, haven't you? Then there is no need to go at the moment. We have a splendid opportunity to take back the lands of the Republic! I'm not going to waste this chance! Fiderit is raising an army from the soldiers who betrayed Arrawnt. They will be my personal guard.

In other words, Domaric doesn't give a poo poo if his capital burns, because he wants petty revenge on Benetram that loving badly.

We can try to say but we all know it's not going to do a drat thing.

Medion, I know this is difficult for you because of your rapport with Conrad's son, but you will not prevent me from taking back Aspia.

I understand your feelings, but you'll have to control them. I will help the emperor with this task. You must help him too!

I'm Honesty from the Rogan army. Since the general is confined in the Executor's hold, I will be representing him until we find a way to free him.

Honesty is General Rogan's right hand. She can be trusted.

Hmm, Rogan's right hand. Well, you seem to be a respected officer.

I've learned much under General Rogan. I'm prepared to die for our army's safety. I'm relieved to see you are safe, Emperor Domaric.

What is the current situation?

The Seagate was attacked and taken by the Arrawnt army. We won't be able to catch up to it. Also, the Executor's mooring was cut and it will sink soon. That's why I came here as fast as I could. General Rogan is still trapped in the Executor's hold.

General Rogan is confined in the hold and we are without the key. It seems there's no way to save him.

If only it was I who had been trapped instead of him!

Unfortunately, these events are common in times of war. Rogan was a good general. We will miss him. So Destonia is being invaded by the Bulzome Sect? The capital and the castle have probably suffered damage. This is very disturbing. This is the biggest crisis the capital has ever faced. I must contact Mageron immediately. He's probably still in the castle. Could you please deliver a letter to him from me, Honesty?

Of course, Emperor. It will be a pleasure to serve you.

Thank you. I will need time to write it. By the way, who did you send to protect Destonia?

Some powerful allies, including Gracia, an Innovator from Elbesem.

God dammit Grantack, stop showing our cards!

We can try to lie again, but:

Don't lie to me! I'm sure he had it. If Gracia plans to battle Bulzome, he must have the Staff of Besem!

But Emperor...

Hmm... This is a very interesting situation...

Because he's a power hungry rear end in a top hat with no redeeming values! This isn't hard!

He seems a bit confused.

Well, it seems we will have to escort the emperor to the Republican capital.

But to reach it, we will have to traverse Headland and Swampland. Since we no longer have use of the Seagate, we'll have to head towards the north mountain range. While the emperor takes care of his business, we should prepare ourselves for the departure.

Ugh, this had got to be some of the worst railroading in any JRPG ever.

NEXT TIME: Garosh? Who's that?

This would be funny if the translation used her real JAPNEESU NAME, Death Helen.

Also I know WHY Medion is pretty much kowtowing to Domaric instead of showing a little more resistance if the Sc 1 ending doesn't give you a hint already, but drat if this section doesn't make it annoying as hell to see what could have been an interesting storyline about Gracia and the Innovators or trip to the imperial capital fighting off against the Bulzome Valkyrie being jerked around for some old hairless cripple's dick fear. From Sc 1's ending, you know that Medion eventually folds to Domaric, but they could have done it in a manner which didn't involve his individual storyline being turned around at the last minute.

Part 61: A few loose ends

This is a very anxious moment. Emperor Domaric's letter must be delivered to Prince Mageron. The emperor is adamant that no one else sees this letter. It's highly confidential. I intend to consult General Rogan about this. I really suggest you tread carefully as well, Prince.

We don't get to see the contents of the letter Domaric is writing to Mageron, which means that there's nothing good in there.

Also, it turns out now that Garvin's gone, Saraband is stranded in the poor, lovely swamps that they're docked in.

Let's hock this halberd for cash and drum up some badly needed money. This is the only blacksmith we'll see in this chapter, so we'll want to get mithril weapons for everyone who needs them.

Hazuki gets a mithril shuriken, so she can snag medium magic scaling. Unfortunately, she can't get high magic scaling until scenario 3.

We also take a dark matter and forge a dark sword with it. It has the highest attack rating out of all the swords available in scenario 2, and Zero's going to need that attack boost when we get him back.

Finally, a heat axe and a protect ring for Rock. Again, he gets some preferential treatment due to being the only axe user.

The Headland army has ceased their alliance with Destonia and plan to stop the invasion of Aspia, but I don't agree with them.

I thought so. As a prince of the Empire, I'm guessing you have no reservations about moving on Aspia. I suppose your fondest wish is for Destonia to once again annex Aspia.

Oops, somebody forgot to proofread a ctrl+f job.

When trying to pass through this area, by the overland route, you need someone who knows this place well to help you or it will be very dangerous. Please accept my offer.

Thank you very much, Prince Medion. Perhaps I will meet Synbios and avenge my older brother, Garosh!

And there's Garosh's replacement if we let him die. If Garosh lived, he would be the one blocking the exit to Saraband and demanding to join up. Jade's story is something you have to piece together from talking to various NPCs: Basically, he's a general in the Headland army, which is one of the territories in the Aspinian Republic. However, when Garosh is killed, the Synbios army takes the blame, and Jade (despite all the wandering blabbering in this bit) turns coat and joins up with Medion's army to get revenge on Synbios. I find this all amusing in that Jade is the younger brother and a general. Meanwhile, big brother Garosh is just a grunt in the second-rate Saraband guard. What an underachiever.

Now, what class could Jade possibly be?

:sigh:

He's another loving archer. Metal gunners follow the brass gunners in Shining Force 2 in that they have less ATK but more DEF. Compared to Robby, Jade has slightly better offense with weaker defense, but it's only a margin of 2 points in both departments. On the plus side, Jade does get a double support and he's not limited to shells: He can in fact equip quarrels and arrows, which have high attack scaling in this scenario.

Anyways, after starting the next fight (which comes with a ton of dialogue that I will post in the next update), I run away and bolt for the mansion again. Now that Domaric is done writing his letter, there's a little something I'd like to raid from the office.

While Wendigo is mostly redundant at this point (though it is possible that she'll get rank 3 in wands before she learns Wendigo 2 naturally), the +7 DEF is awesome. This gives her +17 total from equipment. :hellyeah:

Anyways, short update today because I forgot there would be a new character. And technically Zero rejoins in the next fight, so....

Promotion glitches in Sc 3 aside, it's definitely better that you recruited Jade instead of Garosh. The story that plays out with recruiting Garosh afterwards is so anime spergy in a story about (in what Scenario 2's plot is supposed to be about anyway) war and evil gods, and Medion's already dull coppycat storyline doesn't need to be shat on anymore than it already is.

Part 62: I should feel bad about farming, but I don't

I forgot to mention before the vote that David doesn't actually count, but it turns out that it didn't matter. When Zero returns in a minute, he's not actually going to take up a slot. We'll do a run-off vote at the end of this update.

Metal gunners are cool because in HQ, you get to see them outside their vehicle.

Zero must've been able to get the Ship Key back from Fiale!

I'm very relieved. Zero was able to leave the Synbios army and reach me before I sank into the Destonian Sea.

Just before we came here, Honesty arrived and told us about the emperor's command to her. She had to take some kind of letter with her. She told the general it was top secret. Before the Executor sank, I noticed Honesty and two men head into the captain's quarters to meet with you. I heard you talking on the Executor, but can you tell me what it was about? It sounded interesting!

Don't you think it would be better to inform Prince Medion about Lord Conrad?

Oh... yes... Though it grieves me... I must report Lord Conrad has passed away. His end came when High Priest Fiale and the Bulzome Sect invaded his home... His passing saddens me deeply.

Lord Conrad was a very popular man... and now he's gone... Lord Synbios must be devastated, and the people of the Republic will take the loss just as hard.

With the late Lord Conrad being targeted in his own home, are the problems around the continent occurring in the Republic as well?

Along with General Edmund, we've now lost two pillars of the nation... and General Braff has revolted as well. He intends to destroy Lord Synbios and his army.

Perhaps then, we are beginning to gain some unforeseen allies.

People could well be after us. I've lead an invasion of these lands before, and they probably still talk about it! Fiderit! Are all the preparations in order?

It's kind of refreshing how unrepentant of an rear end in a top hat Domaric is. The guy is just a pure egomaniac who thinks everything is rightfully is, and he's our ally.

The remnants of the Arrawnt army have been reorganized. We are now ready to march.

Before we start, General Rogan, I want you to join my personal guard. You've fought in my army before, and I need your services again.

As you wish, Emperor. I will join you for the battles ahead, alongside the Medion army.

Prince Medion, let's be on our way!

Then this is it... The emperor really intends to march on Aspia, Prince Medion.

One thing we all know about the emperor... He's been eager to reclaim the Republican territories for over 20 years now.

Come on! Let's go, Medion!

The best way is always to move forward. We must pass through the western mountain range. Be sure not to leave the emperor's guard stranded, remain close to them.

The cave leading to Swampland lies in north Headland. I see we'll be heading towards my home, Airo village. This looks like a good, open field. If we pass through quickly, we shouldn’t have any problems.

If Emperor Domaric or Fiderit fall in battle, we will have no choice but to return to the town. We must advance whilst still providing them cover!

We get a big open field, but there's a ton of sand. The yellow blips in the lower-left are indeed Domaric, Rogan, and a squad of white knights. Strangely enough, Fiderit does not and will never fight. Obviously, Rogan only guests if we got the ship key off of Fiale from the Conrad fight in scenario 1. This isn't much of a bonus, but there's no opportunity cost, so why not do it? Rogan's one of the few decent guys on the Imperial side anyway.

All new set of enemies. The fighty guys are minor upgrades over the previous set, but there's still priests packing Tornado 4. As usual, that's the real threat at the moment. The boss, on the other hand, is a complete chump.

Domaric and Rogan also have full stats, but I'm never going to give them the chance to use them. As guests, they just steal experience and gold.

First things first, we load up Zero with steroids so strong that it covers a four level deficit to the point where he becomes the hardest hitter on the team.

If you count, I've got 13 people on the field. Zero doesn't count, he doesn't stay if we egress, and if he dies and we egress, we don't need to revive him. But we still get full control of him. Thank god for brave apples and cursed weapons.

The new Baersol soldiers don't play too nice. Ironically, because I'm stacking all my defense accessories on my mages, they're my most durable characters.

The new wendigo wand is doing wonders for Hedoba, and she doesn't even have rank 3 in wands yet.

Jade's battle model is pretty awesome, but that is some awful damage. We're going to have to do something about that.

Meanwhile, Rock's new heat axe plus the abundance of spears is awesome.

I bumrush Hazuki into the enemy so she can catch three enemies with Tornado 3, and I start to think I've made a mistake.

Then I remember her accessory is +4 DEF and that she doesn't have much to worry about.

Zero, on the other hand, does not take kindly to ranged attacks, especially when he's four levels under.

Syntesis and Hedoba proceed to clean up. This is the point where I realize I'm relying a little too heavily on my mages, and I'm going to need to farm up some experience for a few characters who have fallen behind.

Which of course means shoveling experience to my overleveled half-casters!

Then I realize I set up Medion to get his face wrecked, because that's a Tornado 4 plus two more enemies who will whack him. And almost nobody can reach him because of all the sand.

Arthur leaves the priest at 1 HP. Not optimal, but:

The priest casts Aura 1 instead of blasting Medion's face off. That's just enough to keep Medion alive.

Yep, if there had been a Tornado 4 in there, I would have had to restart the map.

Off to the side, Domaric takes a flying, exploding dildo to the face. It's exactly what he deserves, honestly.

Rogan's attack animation. His face is funny, but his stats aren't too bad.

A white knight robs me of a kill, depriving me of 500 gold. If you remember, I'm rather hard up on cash right now, so this is annoying.

Anyway, it's time to grab the last of the gold and egress. Apart from Zero dying, there's one more weapon I want to fetch from Saraband before the city becomes off-limits.

We huck Hedoba's Volcanon wand and cash in for a mithril arrow for Jade. It only gives him +1 ATT, but that's because he's rank 0 in arrows. At least for now, it'll give him extra range.

It also gives him a critical that inflicts confusion, not that that's useful.

Anyways, since I'm replaying this fight, there's not much to say, so I'll spare you most of the grind.

The dark sword's special critical has no special animation, but it does drain life.

Blocking up the left path so Domaric's crew can't steal anything from me.

This might be the first time I've ever used a weapon to cast a spell.

The boss and his goons are bunkered up in the hills with 30% terrain bonus.

Nothing a giant golem can't solve.

Zero swoops in to take care of the axe user and is rewarded by catching up to everyone else.

And then I sweep up the boss with the Medion's Angels Special.

Captain, please forgive me...

:v: Jade... You have chosen the path in which you believe... There's no need to apologize. However, none in the Republic approve of Emperor Domaric's arrival... under any conditions. The emperor shall not make it to Aspia...

I see. So that's what's going on. The ones we just defeated were not the main Headland army, but a decoy to buy time. They hold strong hatred for the emperor, so it's expected for them to be prepared to fight to the death against the Medion army and the emperor. I believe they were just buying time for the decisive battle in the cave. Perhaps the Swampland army is also...

In an attempt to kill me... This soldier made a wasteful sacrifice.

Brief reminder: Jade was a Republican general who turned coat because of his dead brother and is now actively supporting the despot who wants to forcibly conquer his homeland.

After 20 years of independence for the Republic, fear of the emperor hasn't decreased.

There are too many rebels in the Republic. After reclaiming the Republic, it will be necessary to sweep away those dangerous pests.

No, it will not be an easy task for the emperor. If he continues to be rejected in the hearts of the Republican people, it will be impossible to force them to obey.

I suspect we face a major challenge in the cave. Let's rest in Airo village first. My hometown will provide excellent hospitality!

If anyone, anyone in Medion's command just gave the finger to Domaric, then the guy wouldn't be getting anywhere. Jesus, scenario 2.

Also, I almost forgot: :siren: INSTANT RUN-OFF VOTE: Vote on two characters (who are not David) to send to the bench! :siren:

NEXT TIME: Some bosses I didn't even remember existed!

The Dark Sword is a sexy piece of equipment. You can understand why there are so few fliers and they're purposely gimped from the beginning, since a sword using melee fighter with that range is devastating. Penn of course still has no excuse. Even if the fucker got naturally good somehow, he can't fly.

And Domaric is apparently on Cenegenics or something. Why couldn't Benetram, Grantack, and Palsis be this tough?
