when there is nothing left to burn you have to set yourself on fire
If nothing else the last season of True Blood gave us that utterly bizarre episode that was half gore-filled slaughterfest, half maudlin memorial for a minor character with a lot of grieving.

True Blood is the best trash tv of the modern age. Since the showrunner shift it's gone from good bad to just a garbage fire and that's pretty great in its own way.

True Blood is one of those shows that I can use to quickly gauge how much I can trust a person's opinion. If you're not having fun, I have a feeling that we're not going to be able to see eye-to-eye on most things.

I'll be watching every week until it's over and loving it. I ask for nothing else on a warm summer Sunday night.

I generally like Graceland but the bit last week with Jakes' family was really stupid. From his ex-wife refusing to actually tell him that his son wasn't moving in with him to the whole restraining order coming out of nowhere and instantly being arrested by cops the whole thing seemed like it was just drama for drama.

I haven't watched this season, but the bolded part certainly sounds like Graceland to me. What a dreadful show.

The biggest problem with it was that it was a Jakes subplot and his stuff just feels completely disconnected from everything else that's going on since he doesn't really seem to like anybody but Johnny. Even though he helped Briggs cover up a murder last season.

Haven't watched The Last Ship yet, but umm, is Michael Bay gonna bankroll some of it? Because it's on TNT and if they're going to keep the level of bombastic ... explosions going off and all that I don't know if I would say a show on TNT ever has the budget to do that. At least I can't name one off the top of my head.

So Tyrant has really strong points in its' visuals with great backdrops and nice settings. But the plot is just mediocre and the characterizations of the middle east are really just thinly-veiled assumptions that everyone is a terrorist or a misogynist.

The show aspires to be many things, and you can see their ambition. The show wants to portray Middle Eastern traditions, which it does well when it's not alluding to the fact that everyone is a terrorist. It suggests that there might be a need for a benevolent dictator in a warring country, to bring it peace, united with the use of force. But then it shits on that idea with a good dictator/bad dictator routine that just further grounds the black and white nature of politics that they were speaking out against. "We can kill this guy and face the terrorism or save him and stop the terrorism. Politics are grey like that."

The brother dictator is just comically evil. He just rapes because he's got the power to rape. But he apparently never touches his wife because he expects her to just throw herself at him whenever he desires it. If he's a rapist, why can't he rape his wife too? It's because he's a badly characterized rapist. It's just thrown in for the shock factor. "Ooh, we're like Game of Thrones."

These characters have less dimensions than Paper Mario. The main character's wife is so stupid, focusing on his relationship with his dad when there's clearly terrorism going on in the background overshadowing everything. The son would rather pursue a homosexual relationship in a foreign country with a guy he barely knows simply because he's gay. Guy just wants to get laid, I understand that. But not when that is the only aspect of his personality revealed. The daughter is the only sensible one, she has two lines of dialogue and two minutes of screen time. Do not watch this show. :shrek:

I'm Pacman Jones!
I'm glad I saw people talking about Dominion before the forums exploded since I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. I checked it out and it's totally not awful! To be fair though I think it straddles a pretty thin line there, so hopefully it can keep going strong and not turn into the cheesy, awful sci-fi SyFy original series that most people expect it to be. I like the main dude and I think Anthony Head does a good job of being the evil dramatic villain without actually twirling his mustache. I don't think Michael's actor is pulling off the intimidating/brooding look particularly well, but I'm not too bothered by him since he's supposed to be kind of a wooden weirdo anyway(at least I think so?). Only character that really bothered me was the stupid orphan girl though. I have no idea what her deal is supposed to be besides being the protagonist's unexplained best friend, but I really hope something interesting happens with her because her lines were pretty cringe-worthy.

Also I don't mind the show's goofy take on apocalyptic future wasteland, but I think they really shot themselves in the foot by stamping the '25 years in the future' date on right from the beginning. It seems kind of silly that people would start calling Vegas Vega and take up the MGM/Caesar's palace logos as family crests only 25 years after everything went to hell. I know they're just kind of going after what happened in the movies, but I don't see why they couldn't just say that the child prophecy skipped a couple of generations or something, since that's kind of what happens anyway with the dude's dad having the tattoos and passing them on. But all in all I still liked it so I'll keep watching until the inevitable, disappointing slide into SyFy awfulness.

So, getting some Lost/BSG/some other stuff vibes from The Last Ship. I mean it was a pilot so whatever. Covered quite a lot of ground in it, complete with last minute twist and even LOST-esque "thud" before cutting to black.

But again, I guess my main concern is if they have anything left in the effects budget or not. So I guess not to expect episode 2 to be BSG's "33" anytime soon and more Last Resort and something more confined to the ship for the most part.

But I love how unabashedly Michael-Bayesque military porn was on display in the first half, especially with the helicopter/gunship duke-out.

Is anyone watching this year's Last Comic Standing? There aren't any recognizable names in the contestants, but the judges are Russell Peters, Roseanne Barr and Keenan Ivory Wayans, which is probably the best set of judges the show has ever had.

During the down time I decided to give the double length premiere a shot.... eh, I dunno.

First off it felt like I was watching halfway through the season because they skipped auditions and went straight to putting people in front of an audience with no real explanation of what would happen. Seemed they think that inviting people they wanted to be on the show was better than letting us watch as they 'discover' talent instead, which doesn't work for me at all.

Then the judges, urgh. Russell Peters I've heard of but didn't know much of and reading the comments on iMDB (I know...) means I have little desire to know further, Keenan has great stuff in his past but a ton of poo poo too, and bloody Roseanne who cackles her way through the thing and the one time a comic shows a bit of difference decides to be a complete dick to him (he's admittedly a joking dick back to her) and then ensures his appearance is cut up to make it look like he's not funny, when it's obvious he had a good set.

Given that in years past we had ANDY KINDLER, no the judges are not even remotely close to being the best. They're not even good, not one of them said anything interesting in the space of an hour. Also one of the contestants who was invited on started his background piece with "Ive been doing this for 25 years...", which when based on his industry friends list is enough to say "Hey, I'm not good enough because I've been overlooked for over 2 decades". The funniest person in the first batch (big gay dude with the pink sweater) was overlooked.

Mainstream comedy I know, but it's dropped too much of what made it an enjoyable watch to begin with.
