I have a pretty morbid fascination with "can you believe this poo poo used to be acceptable" media so stuff like racist newspaper articles and Youtubes of Tracy Smothers calling Boy Tony the f-word always gets my attention. Also thanks for the writeup on outlaws because I'd heard the term before but really had no clue what they were about besides the basic context clues.

Interesting thread, just wanted to say thanks for posting it. Finding out Abraham Lincoln was a wrestler blew my mind. It's also crazy how far back matches were worked and how people died during them regardless. When I imagine wrestling from back then I imagine it being extremely low impact - what kinds of things were they doing that actually killed their opponents? Also an 8 hour draw, goddamn.

Pathé News was a British newsreel producer once upon a time. They've recently uploaded an absurd amount of historical footage to youtube, including a fair amount of wrestling. I'm so glad Mike mentioned this on the new Observer Radio. The Chicago Film Archives put up a Wrestling From Chicago youtube channel and it is incredible. The matches are mostly from the Dumont Network golden age when wrestling was at its absolute peak in terms of popularity but there's some stuff in from the 60s too. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWXxP_rvXryBPpjIw7Dl9Tg

I know it's considered "conventional wisdom" that Vince owes Paul Heyman a great creatively, but considering how much Paul lifted from Memphis (especially the brawling/blood aspect), people really need to acknowledge how much Vince owes Lawler and Co. for his success. How come Memphis never tried to go National? Was it because of their relationship with the AWA and NWA? Also, I wanna see how people do on this quiz. I got 84%. No cheatin'! http://www.sporcle.com/games/Chui/nwaworldchampions

Paul Heyman learned booking from Eddie Gilbert(who learned from Bill Watts), so that's where you get the Memphis/Southern style influence from.

On the other hand, would you rather be remembered as the guy who beat Flair for the title once, or the first WCW Heavyweight Champion?

Awesome thread MRT! Here's my little bit of contribution: the trailer for Memphis Heat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-CDVYT-RWI Memphis, despite being notably marky these days, used to be one of THE places for wrestling. Legit riots and poo poo would happen at the Mid-South Coliseum over heels. Jerry Lawler was, of course, the King of Memphis wrestling, but there were plenty of great players like Eddie Gilbert, Bill Dundee, and Tojo Yamamoto. Hell, I'm pretty sure Macho Man and Hogan got their first bit of airtime on Memphis airwaves. Awesome poo poo. I have the movie and if someone could direct me to the best way to stream on a Macbook Pro, I'd love to show it in PSP.tv one night. It's a really awesome flick, and gives lots of good history. e. I'll try to put up a decent effortpost for Memphis wrestling one day soon. I'll also leave you with this, one of the most famous feuds of all time: Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVJPAe4-lBM Andy Kaufman couldn't come to Memphis because he would legitimately get his rear end kicked on the street by some average joes if he showed his face, that's how much he was hated here. Verne Gagne died according to Bill Apter:quote:Bill Apter @apter1wrestling 10m10 minutes ago Not too many major territory promoters still alive outside of the Memphis people. Shame his last few years were in such a bad state due to dementia. Dave's coverage this week should be interesting as I admit I'm not that knowledgeable about the AWA.

We all know about Dusty, but there's been two other significant wrestling deaths in recent days. Buddy Landel was younger than I thought too, olny 53. Nature Boy Buddy Landel passes away William Ansor, who was on the verge of becoming one of the biggest stars in pro wrestling in the mid-80s as Nature Boy Buddy Landel, passed away earlier today at his home. Details are still sketchy, but the reports are that he was in a bad auto accident over the weekend, checked himself out of the hospital on Sunday, and said he was feeling bad when he went to sleep. When his wife went to check on him today, he was dead. Landel was 53. Landel, managed by J.J. Dillon, was set for a major push in Jim Crockett Promotions, including a potential NWA title run, or at least a major feud with Ric Flair. The two had set a record in Raleigh in a tryout match. But he was out of control, didn't get up for a television taping, and was fired. He was National heavyweight champion at the time, and on that morning at the TBS Studios, it was announced that Landel had lost the title to Dusty Rhodes in Albuquerque and he never appeared again. While he had a steady career for the next decade, including participating in USWA's last sellouts at the Mid South Coliseum (Lawler & Dutch Mantel vs. Landel & Bill Dundee), he never came close to that level of stardom again. Cora Combs passes away Cora Combs, the last surviving member of the Billy Wolfe troupe in the heyday of women's pro wrestling, passed away at 7 a.m. today at a hospital in Nashville. She was 92. She had been suffering from pneumonia in the last week. Combs, born Cora Svonsteckik was a former Country Music singer who, at the age of 26, attended a pro wrestling show headlined by Mildred Burke, then the biggest star in women's pro wrestling, back in 1949. Nick Gulas introduced her to Wolfe, and she moved to Wolfe's home base in Columbus, OH and wrestled for 36 years, including at the end of her career, often wrestling her daughter Debbie, while wearing a mask as Lady Satan. She headlined all over the world during the end of the Wolfe's stable heyday, and main evented with a significant push in Tennessee, where she was probably the most famous of the local women wrestlers. She worked with just about every name wrestler from several generations, well into the 80s. She was inducted into the Amsterdam, NY, based Pro Wrestling Hall of fame in 2007.
